Chyavana's Pledge to Win the Ashvins the Soma Draught

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.7.5.1)

व्यास उवाच । तयोस्तद्भाषितं श्रुत्वा वेपमाना नृपात्मजा । धैर्यमालम्ब्य तौ तत्र बभाषे मितभाषिणी

vyāsa uvāca tayostadbhāṣitaṁ śrutvā vepamānā nṛpātmajā dhairyamālambya tau tatra babhāṣe mitabhāṣiṇī

Vyasa said: Hearing their words, the king's daughter trembled; but summoning her courage, that measured-spoken woman addressed them there.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.7.5.2)

देवौ वां रविपुत्रौ च सर्वज्ञौ सुरसम्मतौ । सतीं मां धर्मशीलां च नैवं वदितुमर्हथः

devau vāṁ raviputrau ca sarvajñau surasammatau satīṁ māṁ dharmaśīlāṁ ca naivaṁ vaditumarhathaḥ

"You two are gods, sons of the Sun, all-knowing, honored among the celestials; it does not become you to speak thus to me, a chaste woman devoted to dharma."

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.7.5.3)

पित्रा दत्ता सुरश्रेष्ठौ मुनये योगधर्मिणे । कथं गच्छामि तं मार्गं पुंश्चलीगणसेवितम्

pitrā dattā suraśreṣṭhau munaye yogadharmiṇe kathaṁ gacchāmi taṁ mārgaṁ puṁścalīgaṇasevitam

"O best of gods, I was given by my father to a sage steadfast in the discipline of yoga — how could I take that path followed only by wanton women?"

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.7.5.4)

द्रष्टायं सर्वलोकस्य कर्मसाक्षी दिवाकरः । कश्यपाच्चैव सम्भूतो नैवं भाषितुमर्हथः

draṣṭāyaṁ sarvalokasya karmasākṣī divākaraḥ kaśyapāccaiva sambhūto naivaṁ bhāṣitumarhathaḥ

"The sun, witness to the deeds of all the worlds, is here to see; and you two, born of Kashyapa, ought not to speak thus."

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.7.5.5)

कुलकन्या पतिं त्यक्त्वा कथमन्यं भजेन्नरम् । असारेऽस्मिन्हि संसारे जानन्तौ धर्मनिर्णयम्

kulakanyā patiṁ tyaktvā kathamanyaṁ bhajennaram asāre'sminhi saṁsāre jānantau dharmanirṇayam

"How could a girl of good family abandon her husband and take another man, in this insubstantial world — you two who know the determination of dharma?"

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.7.5.6)

यथेच्छं गच्छतं देवौ शापं दास्यामि वानघौ । सुकन्याहं च शर्यातेः पतिभक्तिपरायणा

yathecchaṁ gacchataṁ devau śāpaṁ dāsyāmi vānaghau sukanyāhaṁ ca śaryāteḥ patibhaktiparāyaṇā

"Go wherever you wish, O gods; else, O sinless ones, I shall curse you. I am Sukanya, daughter of Sharyati, wholly devoted to my husband."

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.7.5.7)

व्यास उवाच । इत्याकर्ण्य वचस्तस्या नासत्यौ विस्मितौ भृशम् । तावब्रूतां पुनस्त्वेनां शङ्कमानौ भयं मुनेः

vyāsa uvāca ityākarṇya vacastasyā nāsatyau vismitau bhṛśam tāvabrūtāṁ punastvenāṁ śaṅkamānau bhayaṁ muneḥ

Vyasa said: Hearing her words, the two Nasatyas were greatly astonished; and, fearing the sage's curse, they spoke to her again.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.7.5.8)

राजपुत्रि प्रसन्नौ ते धर्मेण वरवर्णिनि । वरं वरय सुश्रोणि दास्यावः श्रेयसे तव

rājaputri prasannau te dharmeṇa varavarṇini varaṁ varaya suśroṇi dāsyāvaḥ śreyase tava

"O princess, we are pleased with your righteousness, O fair one; choose a boon, O lovely one — we shall grant it for your welfare."

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.7.5.9)

जानीहि प्रमदे नूनमावां देवभिषग्वरौ । युवानं रूपसम्पन्नं प्रकुर्यावः पतिं तव

jānīhi pramade nūnamāvāṁ devabhiṣagvarau yuvānaṁ rūpasampannaṁ prakuryāvaḥ patiṁ tava

"Know, O lady, that we are truly the foremost physicians of the gods; we shall make your husband young and endowed with beauty."

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.7.5.10)

ततस्त्रयाणामस्माकं पतिमेकतमं वृणु । समानरूपदेहानां मध्ये चातुर्यपण्डिते

tatastrayāṇāmasmākaṁ patimekatamaṁ vṛṇu samānarūpadehānāṁ madhye cāturyapaṇḍite

"Then, O one skilled in discernment, choose one of us three — of identical form and body — to be your husband."

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.7.5.11)

सा तर्योवचनं श्रुत्वा विस्मिता स्वपतिं तदा । गत्वोवाच तयोर्वाक्यं ताभ्यामुक्तं यदद्भुतम्

sā taryovacanaṁ śrutvā vismitā svapatiṁ tadā gatvovāca tayorvākyaṁ tābhyāmuktaṁ yadadbhutam

Hearing the words of these two, she, astonished, then went to her own husband and told him the wondrous words spoken by those two.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.7.5.12)

सुकन्योवाच - स्वामिन् सूर्यसुतौ देवौ सम्प्राप्तौ च्यवनाश्रमे । दृष्टौ मया दिव्यदेहौ नासत्यौ भृगुनन्दन

sukanyovāca - svāmin sūryasutau devau samprāptau cyavanāśrame dṛṣṭau mayā divyadehau nāsatyau bhṛgunandana

Sukanya said: "My lord, two gods, sons of the Sun, have come to the hermitage of Chyavana; I have seen them, the two Nasatyas of celestial form, O descendant of Bhrigu."

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.7.5.13)

वीक्ष्य मां चारुसर्वाङ्गीं जातौ कामातुरावुभौ । कथितं वचनं स्वामिन् पतिं ते नवयौवनम्

vīkṣya māṁ cārusarvāṅgīṁ jātau kāmāturāvubhau kathitaṁ vacanaṁ svāmin patiṁ te navayauvanam

"Seeing me, beautiful in every limb, both became overcome with desire. They said to me, my lord: 'We shall make your husband young —'"

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.7.5.14)

दिव्यदेहं करिष्यावश्चक्षुष्मन्तं मुनिं किल । एतेन समयेनाद्य तं शृणु त्वं मयोदितम्

divyadehaṁ kariṣyāvaścakṣuṣmantaṁ muniṁ kila etena samayenādya taṁ śṛṇu tvaṁ mayoditam

"'— with a celestial body and with eyesight restored, indeed.' On this condition — listen to what I was told:"

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.7.5.15)

समावयवरूपं च करिष्यावः पतिं तव । तत्र त्रयाणामस्माकं पतिमेकतमं वृणु

samāvayavarūpaṁ ca kariṣyāvaḥ patiṁ tava tatra trayāṇāmasmākaṁ patimekatamaṁ vṛṇu

"'We shall make your husband identical in form and limb to us; then, from among the three of us, choose one to be your husband.'"

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.7.5.16)

तच्छ्रुत्वाहमिहायाता प्रष्टुं त्वां कार्यमद्भुतम् । किं कर्तव्यमतः साधो ब्रूह्यस्मिन्कार्यसङ्कटे

tacchrutvāhamihāyātā praṣṭuṁ tvāṁ kāryamadbhutam kiṁ kartavyamataḥ sādho brūhyasminkāryasaṅkaṭe

"Hearing this, I have come here to ask you about this wondrous matter. What should be done, O good one? Tell me, in this difficult situation."

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.7.5.17)

देवमायापि दुर्ज्ञेया न जाने कपटं तयोः । यदाज्ञापय सर्वज्ञ तत्करोमि तवेप्सितम्

devamāyāpi durjñeyā na jāne kapaṭaṁ tayoḥ yadājñāpaya sarvajña tatkaromi tavepsitam

"The illusive power of the gods is hard to fathom; I do not know if there is deceit in their words. Whatever you command, O all-knowing one, I shall do — as you wish."

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.7.5.18)

च्यवन उवाच । गच्छ कान्तेऽद्य नासत्यौ वचनान्मम सुव्रते । आनयस्व समीपं मे शीघ्रं देवभिषग्वरौ

cyavana uvāca gaccha kānte'dya nāsatyau vacanānmama suvrate ānayasva samīpaṁ me śīghraṁ devabhiṣagvarau

Chyavana said: "Go, my beloved, O one of good vows, and by my word bring the two Nasatyas quickly to my side, those foremost physicians of the gods."

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.7.5.19)

क्रियतामाशु तद्वाक्यं नात्र कार्या विचारणा व्यास उवाच । एवं सा समनुज्ञाता तत्र गत्वा वचोऽब्रवीत्

kriyatāmāśu tadvākyaṁ nātra kāryā vicāraṇā vyāsa uvāca evaṁ sā samanujñātā tatra gatvā vaco'bravīt

"Do at once as they say — there is no need to deliberate over this." Vyasa said: Thus permitted, she went there and spoke these words:

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.7.5.20)

क्रियतामाशु नासत्यौ समयेन सुरोत्तमौ । तच्छ्रुत्वा चाश्विनौ वाक्यं तस्यास्तौ तत्र चागतौ

kriyatāmāśu nāsatyau samayena surottamau tacchrutvā cāśvinau vākyaṁ tasyāstau tatra cāgatau

"Let it be done at once, O Nasatyas, best of gods, according to the agreed condition." Hearing her words, the two Ashvins came there.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.7.5.21)

ऊचतू राजपुत्रीं तां पतिस्तव विशत्वपः । रूपार्थं च्यवनस्तूर्णं ततोऽम्भः प्रविवेश ह

ūcatū rājaputrīṁ tāṁ patistava viśatvapaḥ rūpārthaṁ cyavanastūrṇaṁ tato'mbhaḥ praviveśa ha

They said to the princess: "Let your husband enter the water" — and for the sake of gaining new form, Chyavana at once entered the water.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.7.5.22)

अश्विनावपि पश्चात्तत्प्रविष्टौ सर उत्तमम् । ततस्ते निःसृतास्तस्मात्सरसस्तत्क्षणात्त्रयः ।

aśvināvapi paścāttatpraviṣṭau sara uttamam tataste niḥsṛtāstasmātsarasastatkṣaṇāttrayaḥ

The two Ashvins also then entered that excellent lake after him; and then, from that lake, three came forth at that very instant —

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.7.5.23)

तुल्यरूपा दिव्य देहा युवानः सदृशाः किल । दिव्यकुण्डलभूषाढ्याः समानावयवास्तथा

tulyarūpā divya dehā yuvānaḥ sadṛśāḥ kila divyakuṇḍalabhūṣāḍhyāḥ samānāvayavāstathā

— of identical form, of celestial bodies, young, exactly alike, adorned with divine earrings and ornaments, and identical in every limb.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.7.5.24)

तेऽब्रुवन्सहिताः सर्वे वृणीष्व वरवर्णिनि । अस्माकमीप्सितं भद्रे पतिं त्वममलानने

te'bruvansahitāḥ sarve vṛṇīṣva varavarṇini asmākamīpsitaṁ bhadre patiṁ tvamamalānane

All three, together, said to her: "Choose, O fair one; choose from among us, O blessed and spotless-faced one, the husband you desire."

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.7.5.25)

यस्मिन्वाप्यधिका प्रीतिस्तं वृणुष्व वरानने । व्यास उवाच । सा दृष्ट्वा तुल्यरूपांस्तान्समानवयसस्तथा

yasminvāpyadhikā prītistaṁ vṛṇuṣva varānane vyāsa uvāca sā dṛṣṭvā tulyarūpāṁstānsamānavayasastathā

"Choose whichever one for whom you feel the greater love, O beautiful-faced one." Vyasa said: Seeing them of identical form and equal age —

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.7.5.26)

एकस्वरांस्तुल्यवेषांस्त्रीन्वै देवसुतोपमान् । सा तु संशयमापन्ना वीक्ष्य तान्सदृशाकृतीन्

ekasvarāṁstulyaveṣāṁstrīnvai devasutopamān sā tu saṁśayamāpannā vīkṣya tānsadṛśākṛtīn

— of the same voice, the same appearance, all three resembling sons of gods, she fell into confusion, seeing them so identical in form.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.7.5.27)

अजानन्ती पतिं सम्यग्व्याकुला समचिन्तयत् । किं करोमि त्रयस्तुल्याः कं वृणोमि न वेद्म्यहम्

ajānantī patiṁ samyagvyākulā samacintayat kiṁ karomi trayastulyāḥ kaṁ vṛṇomi na vedmyaham

Unable to recognize her husband properly, and troubled, she thought: "What shall I do? All three are alike — whom shall I choose? I do not know."

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.7.5.28)

पतिं देवसुता ह्येते संशये पतितास्म्यहम् । इन्द्रजालमिदं सम्यग्देवाभ्यामिह कल्पितम्

patiṁ devasutā hyete saṁśaye patitāsmyaham indrajālamidaṁ samyagdevābhyāmiha kalpitam

"My husband, or these sons of gods — I have fallen into doubt indeed. This is surely some magical illusion contrived here by the two gods."

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.7.5.29)

कर्तव्यं किं मया चात्र मरणं समुपागतम् । न मया पतिमुत्सृज्य वरणीयः कथञ्चन

kartavyaṁ kiṁ mayā cātra maraṇaṁ samupāgatam na mayā patimutsṛjya varaṇīyaḥ kathañcana

"What should I do now? Death itself has come upon me — for I shall not, under any circumstance, abandon my husband and choose another."

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.7.5.30)

देवस्त्वाधुनिकः कश्चिदित्येषा मम धारणा । इति सञ्चिन्त्य मनसा परां विश्वेश्वरीं शिवाम्

devastvādhunikaḥ kaścidityeṣā mama dhāraṇā iti sañcintya manasā parāṁ viśveśvarīṁ śivām

"This is surely some new deity's doing — such is my conviction." Thinking thus in her mind, upon the supreme, auspicious mistress of the universe —

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.7.5.31)

दध्यौ भगवतीं देवीं तुष्टाव च कृशोदरी । सुकन्योवाच - शरणं त्वां जगन्मातः प्राप्तास्मि भृशदुःखिता

dadhyau bhagavatīṁ devīṁ tuṣṭāva ca kṛśodarī sukanyovāca - śaraṇaṁ tvāṁ jaganmātaḥ prāptāsmi bhṛśaduḥkhitā

— she, that slender-waisted one, meditated on the blessed Devi, and praised her. Sukanya said: "O Mother of the universe, greatly distressed, I have come to you for refuge."

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.7.5.32)

रक्ष मेऽद्य सतीधर्मं नमामि चरणौ तव । नमः पद्मोद्भवे देवि नमः शङ्करवल्लभे

rakṣa me'dya satīdharmaṁ namāmi caraṇau tava namaḥ padmodbhave devi namaḥ śaṅkaravallabhe

"Protect today my duty as a chaste wife; I bow to your two feet. Salutation, O Devi, born of the lotus; salutation, beloved of Shankara."

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.7.5.33)

विष्णुप्रिये नमो लक्ष्मि वेदमातः सरस्वति । इदं जगत्त्वया सृष्टं सर्वं स्थावरजङ्गमम्

viṣṇupriye namo lakṣmi vedamātaḥ sarasvati idaṁ jagattvayā sṛṣṭaṁ sarvaṁ sthāvarajaṅgamam

"Salutation, beloved of Vishnu, O Lakshmi; O Sarasvati, mother of the Vedas — this entire world, all that is moving and unmoving, was created by you."

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.7.5.34)

पासि त्वमिदमव्यग्रा तथात्सि लोकशान्तये । ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेशानां जननी त्वं सुसम्मता

pāsi tvamidamavyagrā tathātsi lokaśāntaye brahmaviṣṇumaheśānāṁ jananī tvaṁ susammatā

"Undisturbed, you protect it, and likewise you withdraw it for the peace of the worlds; you are the honored mother of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesha."

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.7.5.35)

बुद्धिदासि त्वमज्ञानां ज्ञानिनां मोक्षदा सदा । आज्ञा त्वं प्रकृतिः पूर्णा पुरुषप्रियदर्शना

buddhidāsi tvamajñānāṁ jñānināṁ mokṣadā sadā ājñā tvaṁ prakṛtiḥ pūrṇā puruṣapriyadarśanā

"You bestow understanding upon the ignorant, and liberation ever upon the wise; you are the will, the full and perfect Prakriti, dear to behold by the Supreme Purusha."

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.7.5.36)

भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदासि त्वं प्राणिनां विशदात्मनाम् । अज्ञानां दुःखदा कामं सत्त्वानां सुखसाधना

bhuktimuktipradāsi tvaṁ prāṇināṁ viśadātmanām ajñānāṁ duḥkhadā kāmaṁ sattvānāṁ sukhasādhanā

"You bestow enjoyment and liberation upon beings of pure soul; you bring sorrow, indeed, to the ignorant, and are the means of happiness for the virtuous."

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.7.5.37)

सिद्धिदा योगिनामम्ब जयदा कीर्तिदा पुनः । शरणं त्वां प्रपन्नास्मि विस्मयं परमं गता

siddhidā yogināmamba jayadā kīrtidā punaḥ śaraṇaṁ tvāṁ prapannāsmi vismayaṁ paramaṁ gatā

"O Mother, you grant accomplishment to yogis, victory and fame as well. I have come to you for refuge, overcome with the deepest wonder."

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.7.5.38)

पतिं दर्शय मे मातर्मग्नास्मि शोकसागरे । देवाभ्यां चरितं कूटं कं वृणोमि विमोहिता

patiṁ darśaya me mātarmagnāsmi śokasāgare devābhyāṁ caritaṁ kūṭaṁ kaṁ vṛṇomi vimohitā

"Show me my husband, O Mother — I am sunk in an ocean of sorrow; deceived by this trick wrought by the two gods, whom shall I choose, bewildered as I am?"

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.7.5.39)

पतिं दर्शय सर्वज्ञे विदित्वा मे सतीव्रतम् । व्यास उवाच । एवं स्तुता तदा देवा तथा त्रिपुरसुन्दरी

patiṁ darśaya sarvajñe viditvā me satīvratam vyāsa uvāca evaṁ stutā tadā devā tathā tripurasundarī

"Show me my husband, O all-knowing one, knowing my vow of chastity." Vyasa said: Thus praised, the Devi, Tripurasundari —

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.7.5.40)

हृदयेऽस्यास्तदा ज्ञानं ददावाशु सुखोदयम् । निश्चित्य मनसा तुल्यवयोरूपधरान्सती

hṛdaye'syāstadā jñānaṁ dadāvāśu sukhodayam niścitya manasā tulyavayorūpadharānsatī

— then swiftly bestowed upon her heart the knowledge that brought happiness. Determining with her mind, that chaste woman —

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.7.5.41)

प्रसमीक्ष्य तु तान् सर्वान्वव्रे बाला स्वकं पतिम् । वृतेऽथ च्यवने देवौ सन्तुष्टौ तौ बभूवतुः

prasamīkṣya tu tān sarvānvavre bālā svakaṁ patim vṛte'tha cyavane devau santuṣṭau tau babhūvatuḥ

— having carefully examined all of them, that girl chose her own husband. And when Chyavana had been chosen, those two gods became well pleased.

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.7.5.42)

सतीधर्मं समालोक्य सम्प्रीतौ ददतुर्वरम् । भगवत्याः प्रसादेन प्रसन्नौ तौ सुरौत्तमौ

satīdharmaṁ samālokya samprītau dadaturvaram bhagavatyāḥ prasādena prasannau tau surauttamau

Beholding her devotion to the duty of a chaste wife, delighted, they granted a boon; and by the grace of the Devi, those two best of gods were pleased.

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.7.5.43)

मुनिमामन्त्र्य तरसा गमनायोद्यतावुभौ । लब्ध्वा तु च्यवनो रूपं नेत्रे भार्यां च यौवनम्

munimāmantrya tarasā gamanāyodyatāvubhau labdhvā tu cyavano rūpaṁ netre bhāryāṁ ca yauvanam

Taking leave of the sage, both prepared quickly to depart. And Chyavana, having obtained new beauty, his eyesight, and youth, along with his wife —

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.7.5.44)

हृष्टोऽब्रवीन्महातेजास्तौ नासत्याविदं वचः । उपकारः कृतोऽयं मे युवाभ्यां सुरसत्तमौ

hṛṣṭo'bravīnmahātejāstau nāsatyāvidaṁ vacaḥ upakāraḥ kṛto'yaṁ me yuvābhyāṁ surasattamau

— delighted, that greatly radiant one spoke these words to the two Nasatyas: "This favor has been done for me by you two, O best of gods."

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.7.5.45)

किं ब्रवीमि सुखं प्राप्तं संसारेऽस्मिन्ननुत्तमे । प्राप्य भार्यां सुकेशान्तां दुःखं मेऽभवदन्वहम्

kiṁ bravīmi sukhaṁ prāptaṁ saṁsāre'sminnanuttame prāpya bhāryāṁ sukeśāntāṁ duḥkhaṁ me'bhavadanvaham

"What can I say? I have received the highest happiness in this world. Having obtained a wife of such beautiful tresses, I suffered day after day —"

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.7.5.46)

अन्धस्य चातिवृद्धस्य भोगहीनस्य कानने । युवाभ्यां नयने दत्ते यौवनं रूपमद्भुतम्

andhasya cātivṛddhasya bhogahīnasya kānane yuvābhyāṁ nayane datte yauvanaṁ rūpamadbhutam

"— being blind, exceedingly aged, and bereft of enjoyment, in the forest. By you two, my eyes have been given back, and youth and wondrous beauty as well."

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.7.5.47)

सम्पादितं ततं किञ्चिदुपकर्तुमहं ब्रुवे । उपकारिणि मित्रे यो नोपकुर्यात्कथञ्चन

sampāditaṁ tataṁ kiñcidupakartumahaṁ bruve upakāriṇi mitre yo nopakuryātkathañcana

"You have accomplished a great deal for me; I too wish to render some service in return. Whoever fails, in any way, to help a benefactor and friend —"

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.7.5.48)

तं धिगस्तु नरं देवौ भवेच्च ऋणवान्भुवि । तस्माद्वां वाञ्छितं किञ्चिद्दातुमिच्छामि साम्प्रतम्

taṁ dhigastu naraṁ devau bhavecca ṛṇavānbhuvi tasmādvāṁ vāñchitaṁ kiñciddātumicchāmi sāmpratam

"— shame on such a man, O gods; he remains indebted upon this earth. Therefore I now wish to give you two whatever you desire."

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.7.5.49)

आत्मनो ऋणमोक्षाय देवेशौ नूतनस्य च । प्रार्थितं वां प्रदास्यामि यदलभ्यं सुरासुरैः

ātmano ṛṇamokṣāya deveśau nūtanasya ca prārthitaṁ vāṁ pradāsyāmi yadalabhyaṁ surāsuraiḥ

"O lords of gods, for the release of my own debt — and of this new self — I shall grant you whatever you ask, even that which is unattainable by gods and demons."

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.7.5.50)

ब्रुवाथां वां मनोद्दिष्टं प्रीतोऽस्मि सुकृतेन वाम् । श्रुत्वा तौ तु मुनेर्वाक्यमभिमन्त्र्य परस्परम्

bruvāthāṁ vāṁ manoddiṣṭaṁ prīto'smi sukṛtena vām śrutvā tau tu munervākyamabhimantrya parasparam

"Speak, tell me what is in your minds; I am pleased by your good deed toward me." Hearing the sage's words, the two of them, conferring with one another —

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.7.5.51)

तमूचतुर्मुनिश्रेष्ठं सुकन्यासहितं स्थितम् । मुने पितुः प्रसादेन सर्वं नो मनसेप्सितम्

tamūcaturmuniśreṣṭhaṁ sukanyāsahitaṁ sthitam mune pituḥ prasādena sarvaṁ no manasepsitam

— spoke to that best of sages, standing there together with Sukanya: "O sage, by your grace, everything is as desired in our mind."

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.7.5.52)

उत्कण्ठा सोमपानस्य वर्तते नौ सुरैः सह । भिषजाविति देवेन निषिद्धौ चमसग्रहे

utkaṇṭhā somapānasya vartate nau suraiḥ saha bhiṣajāviti devena niṣiddhau camasagrahe

"There remains within us a longing to drink Soma along with the gods; but we, being physicians, have been forbidden by Indra from taking the Soma-cup —"

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.7.5.53)

शक्रेण वितते यज्ञे ब्रह्मणः कनकाचले । तस्मात्त्वमपि धर्मज्ञ यदि शक्तोऽसि तापस

śakreṇa vitate yajñe brahmaṇaḥ kanakācale tasmāttvamapi dharmajña yadi śakto'si tāpasa

"— at the sacrifice held by Indra, in the great sacrifice of Brahma upon the golden mountain. Therefore, O knower of dharma, O ascetic, if you are able —"

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.7.5.54)

कार्यमेतद्धि कर्तव्यं वाञ्छितं नौ सुसम्मतम् । एतद्विज्ञाय वा ब्रह्मन्कुरु वां सोमपायिनौ

kāryametaddhi kartavyaṁ vāñchitaṁ nau susammatam etadvijñāya vā brahmankuru vāṁ somapāyinau

"— this task should indeed be accomplished, this cherished wish of ours; knowing this, O Brahmin, make us two drinkers of Soma."

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.7.5.55)

पिपासास्ति सुदुष्प्रापपा त्वत्तः समुपयास्यति । च्यवनस्तु तयोः प्राह तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं मृदु

pipāsāsti suduṣprāpapā tvattaḥ samupayāsyati cyavanastu tayoḥ prāha tacchrutvā vacanaṁ mṛdu

"This thirst of ours, so hard to satisfy, can only be quenched through you." Hearing this, Chyavana spoke a gentle word to the two of them:

Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.7.5.56)

यदहं रूपसम्पन्नो वयसा च समन्वितः । कृतो भवद्भ्यां वृद्धः सन्भार्यां च प्राप्तवानिति

yadahaṁ rūpasampanno vayasā ca samanvitaḥ kṛto bhavadbhyāṁ vṛddhaḥ sanbhāryāṁ ca prāptavāniti

"Since, though I was old, I have been made by you two endowed with beauty and youth, and have obtained my wife —"

Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.7.5.57)

तस्माद्युवां करिष्यामि प्रीत्याहं सोमपायिनौ । मिषतो देवराजस्य सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीम्यहम्

tasmādyuvāṁ kariṣyāmi prītyāhaṁ somapāyinau miṣato devarājasya satyametadbravīmyaham

"— therefore I shall gladly make you two drinkers of Soma, even before the very eyes of the king of the gods; this I speak truthfully —"

Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.7.5.58)

राज्ञस्तु वितते यज्ञे शर्यातेरमितद्युतेः । इत्याकर्ण्य वचो हृष्टौ तौ दिवं प्रतिजग्मतुः

rājñastu vitate yajñe śaryāteramitadyuteḥ ityākarṇya vaco hṛṣṭau tau divaṁ pratijagmatuḥ

"— at the great sacrifice of King Sharyati, of boundless splendor." Hearing these words, delighted, the two of them returned to heaven.

Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.7.5.59)

च्यवनस्तां गृहीत्वा तु जगामाश्रममण्डलम्

cyavanastāṁ gṛhītvā tu jagāmāśramamaṇḍalam

And Chyavana, taking her with him, went to the circle of the hermitage.
