Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.7.6.1)
janamejaya uvāca cyavanena kathaṁ vaidyau tau kṛtau somapāyinau vacanaṁ ca kathaṁ satyaṁ jātaṁ tasya mahātmanaḥ
Janamejaya said: How did Chyavana make those two physicians drinkers of Soma? And how did the word of that great soul come true?
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.7.6.2)
mānuṣasya balaṁ kīdṛgdevarājabalaṁ prati niṣiddhau bhiṣajau tena kṛtau tau somapāyinau
What is the strength of a mortal against the strength of the king of the gods, that he made those two physicians, who had been forbidden, into drinkers of Soma?
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.7.6.3)
dharmaniṣṭha tadāścaryaṁ vistareṇa vada prabho caritaṁ cyavanasyādya śrotukāmo'smi sarvathā
O righteous one, tell me that wondrous event in full, O lord; I wish in every way to hear today of Chyavana's deed.
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.7.6.4)

Vyasa said: Listen, O great king, to this most wondrous deed of Chyavana at that sacrifice of Sharyati on earth, O descendant of Bharata.
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.7.6.5)
sukanyāṁ sundarīṁ prāpya cyavanaḥ surasannibhaḥ vijahāra prasannātmā devakanyāmivāparaḥ
Having obtained the beautiful Sukanya, Chyavana, now resembling a god, sported joyfully with her, like another god with a celestial maiden.
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.7.6.6)
kadācidatha śaryātibhāryā cintāturā bhṛśam patiṁ prāha vepamānā vacanaṁ rudatī priyā
Then, at a certain time, Sharyati's wife, greatly troubled with anxiety, trembling, and weeping, spoke these words to her husband.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.7.6.7)
rājan putrī tvayā dattā munaye'ndhāya kānane mṛtā jīvati vā sā tu draṣṭavyā sarvathā tvayā
"O king, our daughter, whom you gave to a blind sage in the forest — whether she is alive or dead, you must go and see her, by all means."
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.7.6.8)
gaccha nātha munestāvadāśramaṁ draṣṭumādarāt kiṁ karoti sukanyā sā prāpya nāthaṁ tathāvidham
"Go, my lord, to that sage's hermitage, respectfully, to see her — what is Sukanya doing, having obtained such a husband?"
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.7.6.9)
putrīduḥkhena rājarṣe dagdhāsmi sarvathā hṛdi tāmānaya viśālākṣīṁ tapaḥkṣāmāṁ madantike
"O royal sage, my heart is entirely consumed by grief for my daughter; bring that wide-eyed girl, wasted by austerity, before me."
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.7.6.10)
paśyāmi sarvathā putrīṁ kṛśāṅgīṁ valkalāvṛtām andhaṁ patiṁ samāsādya duḥkhabhājaṁ kṛśodarīm
"I want to see my daughter with my own eyes — her body wasted, clad in bark, having obtained a blind husband, that slender-waisted one, sharing in his sorrow."
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.7.6.11)

Sharyati said: "We shall go today, O wide-eyed one, respectfully, to see Sukanya, our dear daughter, O lovely-limbed one, and that sage of strict vows."
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.7.6.12)
vyāsa uvāca evamuktva tu śaryātiḥ kāminīṁ śokasaṅkulām jagāma rathamāruhya tvaritaścāśramaṁ muneḥ
Vyasa said: Having thus spoken to his sorrow-stricken wife, Sharyati mounted his chariot and went in haste to the hermitage of the sage.
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.7.6.13)

Arriving near the hermitage, the king saw the sage there — endowed with fresh youth, resembling the son of a god.
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.7.6.14)
taṁ vilokyāmarākāraṁ vismayaṁ nṛpatirgataḥ kiṁ kṛtaṁ kutsitaṁ karma putryā lokavigarhitam
Beholding him, of a form like a god's, the king was struck with astonishment: "What vile act, censured by the world, has my daughter committed?"
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.7.6.15)
nihato'sau munirvṛddhastvanayānyaḥ patiḥ kṛtaḥ kāmapīḍitayā kāmaṁ praśānto'pyatinirdhanaḥ
"Has that old sage been done away with, and another husband taken by her, driven by lust — though he himself was calm and quite without means?"
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.7.6.16)
duḥsahayo'yaṁ puṣpadhanvā viśeṣeṇa ca yauvane kule kalaṅkaḥ sumahānanayā mānave kṛtaḥ
"Hard to withstand indeed is that flower-bowed god of love, especially in youth; a very great blemish has this human girl brought upon our family."
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.7.6.17)
dhiktasya jīvitaṁ loke yasya putrī hi kutsitā sarvapāpaistu duḥkhāya putrī bhavati dehinām

"A daughter should indeed be given by her father entirely to a suitable man; and such a fruit have I now reaped as the deed I did deserved."
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.7.6.20)
hanmi cedadya tanayāṁ duḥśīlāṁ pāpakāriṇīm strīhatyā dustarā syānme tathā putryā viśeṣataḥ
"If I were to slay my daughter today for her wicked conduct and sin, the sin of killing a woman would be hard to overcome for me — especially killing my own daughter."
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.7.6.21)
manuvaṁśastu vikhyātaḥ sakalaṅkaḥ kṛto mayā lokāpavādo balavāndustyājyā snehaśṛṅkhalā
"The renowned line of Manu has been blemished through me; the censure of the world is powerful, yet the chain of affection is hard to abandon."
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.7.6.22)
kiṁ karomīti cintābdhau yadā magnaḥ sa pārthivaḥ sukanyayā tadā daivāddṛṣṭaścintākulaḥ pitā
While that king was sunk in an ocean of anxiety, wondering "What shall I do?", by chance Sukanya then saw her father, troubled with worry.
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.7.6.23)
sā dṛṣṭvā taṁ jagāmāśu sukanyā piturantike gatvā papraccha bhūpālaṁ premapūritamānasā
Seeing him, Sukanya at once went to her father's side; going there, with a heart full of love, she asked the king:
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.7.6.24)
kiṁ vicārayase rājaṁścintāvyākulitānanaḥ upaviṣṭaṁ muniṁ vīkṣya yuvānamambujekṣaṇam
"What are you pondering, O king, your face so troubled with worry?" — this she said, seeing the king gazing at the seated sage, now young and lotus-eyed.
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.7.6.25)

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.7.6.27)

rājovāca - kva muniścyavanaḥ putri vṛddho'ndhastāpasottamaḥ ko'yaṁ yuvā madonmattaḥ sandeho'tra mahānmama
The king said: "Where, my daughter, is the sage Chyavana, that aged, blind, foremost of ascetics? Who is this young man, intoxicated with pride? Great is my doubt in this matter."
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.7.6.28)
muniḥ kiṁ nihataḥ pāpe tvayā duṣkṛtakāriṇi nūtano'sau patiḥ kāmātkṛtaḥ kulavināśini
"Has the sage been done away with, O sinful girl, evildoer? Has this new husband been taken up by you out of lust, O destroyer of our family?"
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.7.6.29)
so'haṁ cintāturastaṁ na paśyāmyāśramasaṁsthitam kiṁ kṛtaṁ duṣkṛtaṁ karma kulaṭācaritaṁ kila
"I, in my anxiety, do not see him present here in the hermitage. What wicked deed, worthy of a wanton woman, has been done?"
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.7.6.30)
nimagno'haṁ durācāre śokābdhau tvatkṛte'dhunā dṛṣṭvainaṁ puruṣaṁ divyamadṛṣṭvā cyavanaṁ munim
"I am now sunk in an ocean of sorrow at this misconduct of yours, seeing this divine-looking man and not seeing the sage Chyavana."
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.7.6.31)
vihasya tamuvācāśu sā śrutvā vacanaṁ pituḥ gṛhītvā''nīya pitaraṁ bharturantikamādarāt
Hearing her father's words, she laughed and at once spoke to him; taking her father by the hand, she led him respectfully into the presence of her husband —
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.7.6.32)

The king said: "Tell me your story, O descendant of Bhrigu, quickly, just as it happened. How did you regain your eyesight, and where has your old age gone?"
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.7.6.38)

Then, comforting the king, that descendant of Bhrigu said to him: "I shall perform the sacrifice for you, O king — prepare the necessary materials."
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.7.6.44)

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.7.6.46)

vitate tu tathā yajñe devāḥ sarve savāsavāḥ ājagmuścāśvinau tatra somārthamupajagmatuḥ
When the sacrifice was fully underway, all the gods, together with Indra, arrived; and the two Ashvins also came there, seeking the Soma.
Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.7.6.51)
indrastu śaṅkitastatra vīkṣya tāvaśvināvubhau papraccha ca surānsarvānkimetau samupāgatau

cikitsakau na somārhau kenānītāviheti ca nābruvannamarāstatra rājñastu vitate makhe
"Being mere physicians, they are not entitled to Soma — who has brought them here?" The immortals there gave him no answer, at the king's ongoing sacrifice.
Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.7.6.53)
agṛhṇāccyavanaḥ somamaśvinordevayostadā śakrastaṁ vārayāmāsa mā gṛhāṇaitayorgraham

Chyavana said to him there: "How is it that these two, the sons of the Sun, the two Nasatyas, are not fit to receive the Soma-cup? Tell me the truth, O lord of Shachi."
Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.7.6.55)
na saṅkarau samutpannau dharmapatnīsutau raveḥ kena doṣeṇa devendra nārhau somaṁ bhiṣagvarau
"They are not born of a mixed union — they are the sons of the Sun by his lawful wife. By what fault, O Indra, king of the gods, are these two foremost physicians unworthy of the Soma?"
Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.7.6.56)

Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.7.6.57)

Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.7.6.58)
ābhyāmupakṛtaḥ śakra tathā dattaṁ navaṁ vayaḥ tasmātpratyupakārastu kartavyaḥ sarvathā mayā
"I was helped by these two, O Indra, and given new youth by them; therefore this return favor must by all means be rendered by me."
Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.7.6.59)
indra uvāca cikitsakau kṛtāvetau nāsatyau ninditau suraiḥ ubhāvetau na somārhau mā gṛhāṇaitayorgraham
Indra said: "These two Nasatyas have been made mere physicians, and are censured by the gods; both are unworthy of the Soma — do not take up the cup on their behalf."
Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.7.6.60)
cyavana uvāca ahalyājāra saṁyaccha kopaṁ cādya nirarthakam vṛtraghna kiṁ hi nāsatyau na somārhau surātmajau
Chyavana said: "O paramour of Ahalya, restrain today this pointless anger, O slayer of Vritra! Why indeed should the two Nasatyas, sons of a god, be unworthy of the Soma?"
Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.7.6.61)
evaṁ vivāde samupasthite ca na ko'pi vācaṁ tamuvāca bhūpa grahaṁ tayorbhārgavatigmatejāḥ saṅgrāhayāmāsa tapobalena
When this dispute had thus arisen, no one, O king, spoke a word in answer to him; and the fiery-radiant descendant of Bhrigu, by the power of his austerity, caused the Soma-cup to be taken up for the two of them.
