Chapter 6All chaptersChapter 8

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.7.7.1)

vyāsa uvāca datte grahe tu rājendra vāsavaḥ kupitau bhṛśam provāca cyavanaṁ tatra darśayanbalamātmanaḥ

Vyasa said: O lord of kings, when the Soma-cup had been given, Indra, greatly enraged, spoke to Chyavana there, displaying his own might.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.7.7.2)

mā brahmabandho maryādāmimāṁ tvaṁ karttumarhasi vadhiṣyāmi dviṣantaṁ tvāṁ viśvarūpamivā'param

"Do not, O unworthy Brahmin, dare to breach this established order; I shall slay you, my enemy, as I slew another Vishvarupa."

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.7.7.3)

cyavana uvāca māvamaṁsthā mahātmānau rūpadraviṇavarcasā yau cakraturmāṁ maghavan vṛndārakamivāparam

Chyavana said: "Do not disparage those two great souls, endowed with such beauty, wealth, and splendor, O Indra — those who made me like another god."

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.7.7.4)

ṛte tvāṁ vibudhāścānye kathaṁ vādadate graham aśvināvapi devendra devau viddhi parantapau

"Why, apart from you, do the other gods say nothing against the taking of the Soma-cup? Know, O Indra, that the two Ashvins too are gods, scorchers of their foes."

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.7.7.5)

indra uvāca bhiṣajau nārhataḥ kāmaṁ grahaṁ yajñe kathañcana yadi ditsasi mandātman śiraśchetsyāmi sāmpratam

Indra said: "Those two physicians are by no means entitled to the Soma-cup at this sacrifice, under any circumstance. If you persist in giving it, O foolish one, I shall now sever your head."

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.7.7.6)

vyāsa uvāca anādṛtya tu tadvākyaṁ vāsavasya ca bhārgavaḥ grahaṁ tu grāhayāmāsa bhartsayanniva taṁ bhṛśam

Vyasa said: Disregarding Indra's words, the descendant of Bhrigu had the Soma-cup taken up regardless, as if severely rebuking him.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.7.7.7)

somapātraṁ yadā tābhyāṁ gṛhītaṁ tu pipāsayā samīkṣya balabhiddeva idaṁ vacanamabravīt

When the Soma-cup was taken up by the two of them, eager with thirst, the god who split Bala, seeing this, spoke these words:

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.7.7.8)

ābhyamarthāya somaṁ tvaṁ grāhayiṣyasi cetsvayam vajraṁ tu prahariṣyāmi viśvarūpamivāparam

"If you yourself cause the Soma to be given for the sake of these two, I shall strike you with my thunderbolt, as I struck that other Vishvarupa."

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.7.7.9)

vāsavenaivamuktastu bhārgavaścātigarvitaḥ jagrāha vidhivatsomamaśvibhyāmatimanyumān

Thus addressed by Indra, the descendant of Bhrigu, exceedingly proud and filled with great anger, duly took up the Soma for the two Ashvins.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.7.7.10)

indro'pi prākṣipatkopādvajramasmai svamāyudham paśyatāṁ sarvadevānāṁ sūryakoṭisamaprabham

Indra too, in his fury, hurled his own weapon, the thunderbolt, radiant as a myriad suns, at him, before the eyes of all the gods.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.7.7.11)

preritaṁ cāśaniṁ prekṣya cyavanastapasā tataḥ stambhayāmāsa vajraṁ sa śakrasyāmitatejasaḥ

Seeing the thunderbolt hurled at him, Chyavana then, by his austerity, paralyzed that weapon of Indra, whose splendor was boundless.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.7.7.12)

kṛtyayā sa mahābāhurindraṁ hantumihodyataḥ juhāvāgnau śrutaṁ havyaṁ mantreṇa munisattamaḥ

That mighty-armed one, that best of sages, then set himself, by a sorcerous power, to slay Indra; he offered into the fire the prescribed oblation with mantra.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.7.7.13)

tatra kṛtyā samutpannā cyavanasya tapobalāt prabalaḥ puruṣaḥ krūro bṛhatkāyo mahāsuraḥ

Then, by the power of Chyavana's austerity, a sorcerous being arose there — a mighty, cruel being, a great demon of vast body —

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.7.7.14)

mado nāma mahāghoro bhayadaḥ prāṇināmiha śarīre parvatākārastīkṣṇadaṁṣṭro mayānakaḥ

— named Mada, exceedingly terrible, striking fear into all living beings, his body mountainous in size, with sharp fangs, wild and dreadful.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.7.7.15)

catasraścāyatā daṁṣṭrā yojanānāṁ śataṁ śatam itare tvasya daśanā babhūvurdaśayojanāḥ

His four fangs were each extended a hundred yojanas in length; his other teeth were each ten yojanas long.

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.7.7.16)

bāhū parvatasaṅkāśāvāyatau krūradarśanau jihvā tu bhīṣaṇā krūrā lelihānā nabhastalam

His two arms, mountain-like and long, were fearsome to behold; his tongue was terrible and fierce, licking at the very vault of the sky.

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.7.7.17)

grīvā tu giriśṛṅgābhā kaṭhinā bhīṣaṇā bhṛśam nakhā vyāghranakhaprakhyāḥ keśāścātīvabhīṣaṇāḥ

His neck resembled a mountain peak, hard and exceedingly fearsome; his nails were like a tiger's claws, and his hair was utterly terrifying.

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.7.7.18)

śarīraṁ kajjalābhaṁ ca tasya cāsyaṁ bhayānakam netre dāvānalaprakhye bhīṣaṇe'tibhayānake

His body was black as lampblack, and his face was frightful; his two eyes resembled a forest conflagration, fearsome and utterly terrible.

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.7.7.19)

hanurekā sthitā tasya bhūmāvekā divaṁ gatā evaṁvidhaḥ samutpanno mado nāma bṛhattanuḥ

One of his jaws rested upon the earth, the other reached to heaven. Such was the being that arose, named Mada, of enormous body.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.7.7.20)

taṁ vilokya surāḥ sarve bhayamājagmuraṁhasā indro'pi bhayasantrasto yuddhāya na mano dadhe

Beholding him, all the gods were seized with fear at once; even Indra, terrified, had no mind left for battle.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.7.7.21)

daityo'pi vadane kāmaṁ vajramādāya saṁsthitaḥ vyāptaṁ nabho ghoradṛṣṭirgrasanniva jagattrayam

That demon, holding Indra's thunderbolt in his very mouth at will, stood there, his terrible gaze filling the sky, as if devouring the three worlds.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.7.7.22)

sa bhakṣyayiṣyansaṅkruddhaḥ śatakratumupādravat cakruśuśca surāḥ sarve hā hatāḥ smeti saṁsthitāḥ

Enraged, intent on devouring him, he rushed upon Indra of a hundred sacrifices; and all the gods cried out, "Alas! We are slain!" and stood helpless.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.7.7.23)

indraḥ stambhitabāhustu mumukṣurvajramantikāt na śaśāka paviṁ tasminprahartuṁ pākaśāsanaḥ

Indra, his arm paralyzed, though wishing to hurl his thunderbolt from nearby, was unable, that chastiser of Paka, to strike him with the weapon.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.7.7.24)

vajrahastaḥ sureśānastaṁ vīkṣya kālasannibham sasmāra manasā tatra guruṁ samayakovidam

The lord of the gods, thunderbolt in hand, seeing him resembling Death itself, called to mind there his preceptor, versed in the proper resolution of such matters.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.7.7.25)

smaraṇādājagāmāśu bṛhaspatirudāradhīḥ gurustatsamayaṁ dṛṣṭvā vipattisadṛśaṁ mahat

At the mere thought of him, the noble-minded Brihaspati came at once; that preceptor, seeing the occasion so fraught with great calamity —

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.7.7.26)

vicārya manasā kṛtyaṁ tamuvāca śacīpatim duḥsādhyo'yaṁ mahāmantraistvayaṁ vajreṇa vāsava

— having reflected in his mind on what should be done, said to Indra: "He cannot be overcome by great mantras or by your thunderbolt, O Indra."

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.7.7.27)

asuro madasaṁjñastu yajñakuṇḍātsamutthitaḥ tapobalamṛṣeḥ samyak cyavanasya mahābalaḥ

"This demon, named Mada, has arisen from the sacrificial fire-pit; he is truly the mighty power of the sage Chyavana's austerity, immensely strong."

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.7.7.28)

anivāryo hyayaṁ śatrustvayā devaistathā mayā śaraṇaṁ yāhi deveśa cyavanasya mahātmanaḥ

"This foe cannot be repelled by you, by the gods, or even by me. Go, O lord of the gods, take refuge with the great-souled Chyavana."

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.7.7.29)

"He alone can surely restrain this sorcerous being he himself has created; none can ever restrain the wrath of one who possesses such spiritual power."

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.7.7.30)

vyāsa uvāca ityukto guruṇā śakrastadāgacchanmuniṁ prati praṇamya śirasā namraḥ tamuvāca bhayānvitaḥ

Vyasa said: Thus told by his preceptor, Indra then went to the sage; bowing his head low, filled with fear, he spoke to him:

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.7.7.31)

kṣamasva muniśārdūla śamayāsuramudyatam prasanno bhava sarvajña vacanaṁ te karomyaham

"Forgive me, O tiger among sages; pacify this demon you have raised up. Be gracious, O all-knowing one — I shall now do as you say."

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.7.7.32)

somārhāvaśvināvetāvadyaprabhṛti bhārgava bhaviṣyataḥ satyametadvaco vipra prasīda me

"From this day forth, O descendant of Bhrigu, these two Ashvins shall be entitled to the Soma; this is my true word, O Brahmin — be gracious to me."

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.7.7.33)

mithyā te nodyamo hyeṣa bhavatyeva tapodhana jāne tvamapi dharmajña mithyā naiva kariṣyasi

"This effort of yours has not gone in vain, O treasury of austerity; and I know you too, O knower of dharma, will never make it go in vain."

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.7.7.34)

somapāvaśvināvetau tvatkṛtau ca sadaive hi bhaviṣyataśca śaryāteḥ kīrtistu vipulā bhavet

"These two Ashvins shall now, having been made so by you, be Soma-drinkers henceforth among the gods; and Sharyati's fame shall become vast."

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.7.7.35)

mayā yaddhi kṛtaṁ karma sarvathā munisattama parīkṣārthaṁ tu vijñeyaṁ tava vīryaprakāśanam

"Whatever action I have taken, O best of sages, know that it was entirely done as a test, so that your might might be revealed."

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.7.7.36)

prasādaṁ kuru me brahman madaṁ saṁhara cotthitam kalyāṇaṁ sarvadevānāṁ tathā bhūyo vidhīyatām

"Show me your grace, O Brahmin; withdraw this Mada you have raised up, and let good fortune once more be granted to all the gods."

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.7.7.37)

evamuktastu śakreṇa cyavanaḥ paramārthavit sañjahāra tapaḥ kopaṁ samutpannaṁ virodhajam

Thus addressed by Indra, Chyavana, the knower of highest truth, withdrew the wrath of his austerity that had arisen out of that conflict.

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.7.7.38)

devamāśvāsya saṁvignaṁ bhārgavastu madaṁ tataḥ vyabhajatstrīṣu pāneṣu dyūteṣu mṛgayāsu ca

Having comforted the troubled god, that descendant of Bhrigu then divided Mada, distributing him among women, drink, gambling, and hunting.

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.7.7.39)

madaṁ vibhajya devendramāśvāsya cakitaṁ bhiyā saṁsthāpya ca surānsarvānmakhaṁ tasya nyavartayat

Having divided Mada, and comforted Indra, shaken with fear, and having settled all the gods again in their places, he brought the king's sacrifice to its due conclusion.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.7.7.40)

tatastu saṁskṛtaṁ somaṁ vāsavāya mahātmane aśvibhyāṁ sarvadharmātmā pāyayāmāsa bhārgavaḥ

Then that wholly righteous descendant of Bhrigu had the consecrated Soma given to drink both to the great-souled Indra and to the two Ashvins.

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.7.7.41)

evaṁ tau cyavanenāryāvaśvinau raviputrakau vihitau somapau rājan sarvathā tapaso balāt

Thus, O king, were those two noble sons of the Sun, the two Ashvins, made Soma-drinkers by Chyavana, entirely through the power of his austerity.

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.7.7.42)

sarastadapi vikhyātaṁ jātaṁ yūpavimaṇḍitam āśramastu muneḥ samyak pṛthivyāṁ viśruto'bhavat

That lake too became renowned, adorned with the sacrificial post; and the sage's hermitage became widely famed throughout the earth.

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.7.7.43)

śaryātirapi santuṣṭo hyabhavattena karmaṇā yajñaṁ samāpya nagare jagāma sacivairvṛtaḥ

Sharyati too was greatly pleased by that deed; having completed the sacrifice, he returned to his city, surrounded by his ministers.

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.7.7.44)

rājyaṁ cakāra dharmajño manuputraḥ pratāpavān ānartastasya putro'bhūdānartādrevato'bhavat

That righteous and mighty son of Manu ruled his kingdom; his son was Anarta, and from Anarta came Revata.

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.7.7.45)

so'ntaḥsamudre nagarīṁ vinirmāya kuśasthalīm āsthito'bhuṅkta viṣayānānartādīnarindamaḥ

He, that queller of foes, built a city named Kushasthali within the ocean, and, settled there, enjoyed the domains beginning with Anarta.

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.7.7.46)

tasya putraśataṁ jajñe kakudmijyeṣṭhamuttamam putrī ca revatī nāmnā sundarī śubhalakṣaṇā

A hundred sons were born to him, of whom the eldest and best was Kakudmi; and he had a daughter named Revati, beautiful and of auspicious marks.

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.7.7.47)

varayogyā yadā jātā tadā rājā ca revataḥ cintayāmāsa rājendro rājaputrānkulodbhavān

When she came of age fit for marriage, then King Revata, that lord of kings, began to consider princes of good family as suitors.

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.7.7.48)

raivataṁ nāma ca girimāśritaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ cakāra rājyaṁ balavānānarteṣu narādhipaḥ

Established upon the mountain named Raivata, that mighty lord of the earth ruled his kingdom over the Anarta domains.

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.7.7.49)

vicintya manasā rājā kasmai deyā mayā sutā gatvā pṛcchāmi brahmāṇaṁ sarvajñaṁ surapūjitam

The king reflected in his mind: "To whom should I give my daughter? Let me go and ask Brahma, the all-knowing one, honored by the gods."

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.7.7.50)

iti sañcintya bhūpālaḥ sutāmādāya revatīm brahmalokaṁ jagāmāśu praṣṭukāmaḥ pitāmaham

Thinking thus, the king, taking his daughter Revati with him, went at once to Brahmaloka, wishing to consult the grandsire Brahma.

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.7.7.51)

yatra devāśca yajñāśca chandāṁsi parvatāstathā abdhayaḥ siddhagandharvāḥ divyarūpadharāḥ sthitāḥ

There, where gods and sacrifices, the Vedic meters, mountains, and oceans, and Siddhas and Gandharvas of divine form, all abide,

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.7.7.52)

ṛṣayaḥ siddhagandharvāḥ pannagāścāraṇāstathā tasthuḥ prāñjalayaḥ sarve stuvantaśca purātanāḥ

— where sages, Siddhas, Gandharvas, serpents, and Charanas, all those ancient beings, stood with folded hands, singing praises —
