Skandha 7 · Chapter 8

The Lineage of Ikshvaku

Chapter 7All chaptersChapter 9

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.7.8.1)

janamejaya uvāca saṁśayo'yaṁ mahān brahman vartate mama mānase brahmalokaṁ gato rājā revatīsaṁyutaḥ svayam

Janamejaya said: This is a great doubt that lingers in my mind, O Brahmin — that the king himself went to Brahmaloka, taking Revati with him.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.7.8.2)

mayā pūrvaṁ śrutaṁ kṛtsnaṁ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ kathāntare brāhmaṇo brahmavicchānto brahmalokamavāpnuyāt

I have heard before, in full, from Brahmins in the course of other tales, that a Brahmin, a knower of Brahman, at peace, may attain Brahmaloka.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.7.8.3)

rājā kathaṁ gatastatra revatīsaṁyutaḥ svayam satyaloke'tiduṣprāpe bhūrlokāditi saṁśayaḥ

How then did the king himself go there, together with Revati, to Satyaloka, so exceedingly hard to reach from the earthly world? This is my doubt.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.7.8.4)

mṛtaḥ svargamavāpnoti sarvaśāstreṣu nirṇayaḥ (mānuṣeṇa tu dehena brahmaloke gatiḥ kathaṁ ) svargātpunaḥ kathaṁ loke mānuṣe jāyate gatiḥ

It is the determination of all the scriptures that only after death does one attain heaven; (how then could there be passage to Brahmaloka in a human body?) And how could there be a return passage from heaven again to birth in the human world?

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.7.8.5)

etanme saṁsyayaṁ vidvaṁśchettumarhasi sāmpratam yathā rājā gatastatra praṣṭukāmaḥ prajāpatim

O learned one, resolve this doubt of mine now: how the king went there, wishing to question the Prajapati Brahma.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.7.8.6)

vyāsa uvāca merostu śikhare rājan sarve lokāḥ pratiṣṭhitāḥ indraloko vahniloko yā ca saṁyaminī purī

Vyasa said: O king, upon the peak of Meru all the worlds are established — the world of Indra, the world of Agni, and the city of Yama called Samyamani,

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.7.8.7)

tathaiva satyalokaśca kailāsaśca tathā punaḥ vaikuṇṭhaśca punastatra vaiṣṇavaṁ padamucyate

— likewise Satyaloka, and again Kailasa, and again Vaikuntha there too, which is called the abode of Vishnu.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.7.8.8)

yathārjunaḥ śakraloke gataḥ pārtho dhanurdharaḥ pañcavarṣāṇi kaunteyaḥ sthitastatra surālaye

Just as Arjuna, the son of Pritha, the bow-bearer, went to Indra's world, and that son of Kunti remained there in the abode of the gods for five years —

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.7.8.9)

mānuṣeṇaiva dehena vāsavasya ca sannidhau tathaivānye'pi bhūpālāḥ kakutsthapramukhāḥ kila

— in his very human body, in Indra's presence; so too have other kings, beginning with Kakutstha, indeed gone there.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.7.8.10)

svarlokagatayaḥ paścāddaityāścāpi mahābalāḥ jitvendrasadanaṁ prāpya saṁsthitāstatra kāmataḥ

And afterward, mighty demons too, having conquered and reached the abode of Indra, remained there in the heavenly world at will.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.7.8.11)

mahābhiṣaḥ purā rājā brahmalokaṁ gataḥ svarāṭ āgacchantīṁ nṛpo gaṅgāmapaśyaccātisundarīm

Long ago, a sovereign king named Mahabhisha went to Brahmaloka; and the king saw the Ganga, exceedingly beautiful, coming there.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.7.8.12)

vāyunāmbaramasyāstu daivādapahṛtaṁ nṛpa kiñcinnagnā nṛpeṇātha dṛṣṭā sā sundarī tathā

By the working of fate, O king, her garment was blown away by the wind; and thus that beautiful woman, somewhat unclothed, was seen by the king.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.7.8.13)

smitaṁ cakāra kāmārtaḥ sā ca kiñcijjahāsa vai brahmaṇā tau tadā dṛṣṭau śaptau jātau vasundharām

Overcome with desire, he smiled, and she too laughed a little; Brahma, seeing the two of them at that moment, cursed them, and they took birth upon the earth.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.7.8.14)

vaikuṇṭhe'pi surāḥ sarve pīḍitā daityadānavaiḥ gatvā hariṁ jagannāthamastuvankamalāpatim

And when all the gods, once afflicted by Daityas and Danavas, went to Vaikuntha, they praised Hari, lord of the universe, husband of Lakshmi.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.7.8.15)

sandeho nātra kartavyaḥ sarvathā nṛpasattama gamyāḥ sarve'pi lokāḥ syurmānavānāṁ narādhipa

No doubt need be entertained in this matter at all, O best of kings; all these worlds may indeed be reached by human beings, O lord of men.

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.7.8.16)

avaśyaṁ kṛtapuṇyānāṁ tāpasānāṁ narādhipa puṇyasadbhāva evātra gamane kāraṇaṁ nṛpa

Certainly for those who have performed merit, and for ascetics, O lord of men, it is the very presence of merit that is the cause of such passage, O king —

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.7.8.17)

tathaiva yajamānānāṁ yajñena bhāvitātmanām janamejaya uvāca revato revatīṁ kanyāṁ gṛhītvā cārulocanām

— likewise for the performers of sacrifice, whose souls have been purified by sacrifice. Janamejaya said: Revata, taking his beautiful-eyed daughter Revati —

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.7.8.18)

brahmalokaṁ gataḥ paścātkiṁ kṛtaṁ tene bhūbhujā brahmaṇā kiṁ samādiṣṭaṁ kasmai dattā sutā punaḥ

— went then to Brahmaloka. What did that king do afterward? What was commanded by Brahma, and to whom was his daughter finally given?

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.7.8.19)

tatsarvaṁ vistarādbahman kathaya tvaṁ mamādhunā vyāsa uvāca niśāmaya mahīpāla rājā revatakaḥ kila

"Tell me all this now, O Brahmin, in full detail." Vyasa said: "Listen, O king — King Revataka indeed —"

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.7.8.20)

putryā varaṁ paripraṣṭuṁ brahmalokaṁ gato yadā āvartamāne gāndharve sthito labdhakṣaṇaḥ kṣaṇam

— when he had gone to Brahmaloka to ask about a groom for his daughter, arrived while a musical performance was in progress, and, finding a moment, waited for that moment.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.7.8.21)

śṛṇvannatṛpyaddhṛṣṭātmā sabhāyāṁ tu sakanyakaḥ samāpte tatra gāndharve praṇamya parameśvaram

Listening, with a joyful heart, he could not have his fill, standing there in the assembly with his daughter; when that musical performance had ended, he bowed to the Supreme Lord —

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.7.8.22)

darśayitvā sutāṁ tasmai svābhiprāyaṁ nyavedayat rājovāca - varaṁ kathaya deveśa kanyeyaṁ mama putrikā

— and, presenting his daughter to him, made known his own intention. The king said: "Tell me a groom, O lord of gods — this is my daughter here."

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.7.8.23)

deyā kasmai mayā brahman praṣṭuṁ tvāṁ samupāgataḥ bahavo rājaputrā me vīkṣitāḥ kulasambhavāḥ

"To whom should I give her, O Brahmin? I have come here to ask you this. I have already considered many princes of good family —"

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.7.8.24)

kasmiṁścinme manaḥ kāmaṁ nopatiṣṭhati cañcalam tasmāttvāṁ devadeveśa praṣṭumatrāgato'smyaham

"— but my restless mind does not settle upon any of them. Therefore, O lord of the gods of gods, I have come here to ask you."

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.7.8.25)

tadājñāpaya sarvajña yogyaṁ rājasutaṁ varam kulīnaṁ balavantaṁ ca sarvalakṣaṇasaṁyutam

"Command me now, O all-knowing one — name a suitable prince as groom, of good family, strong, and endowed with every auspicious mark,"

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.7.8.26)

dātāraṁ dharmaśīlaṁ ca rājaputraṁ samādiśa vyāsa uvāca tadākarṇya jagatkartā vacanaṁ nṛpatestadā

"— generous and righteous — indicate such a prince to me." Vyasa said: Hearing this, the maker of the world then —

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.7.8.27)

tamuvāca hasanvākyaṁ dṛṣṭvā kālasya paryayam brahmovāca - rājaputrāstvayā rājan varā ye hṛdaye kṛtāḥ

— seeing the passage of time, spoke to him, smiling. Brahma said: "O king, those princes whom you have held in your heart as suitors —"

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.7.8.28)

grastāḥ kālena te sarve sapitṛpautrabāndhavāḥ saptaviṁśatimo'dyaiva dvāparastu pravartate

"— all of them have been swallowed by time, together with their fathers, grandsons, and kinsmen; even now, the twenty-seventh Dvapara Yuga is under way."

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.7.8.29)

vaṁśajāste mṛtāḥ sarve purī daityairviluṇṭhitā somavaṁśodbhavastatra rājā rājyaṁ praśāsti hi

"All their descendants have died; your city has been plundered by demons. There a king born of the Lunar dynasty now rules that realm."

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.7.8.30)

ugrasena iti khyāto mathurādhipatiḥ kila yayātivaṁśasambhūto rājā māthuramaṇḍale

"He is known as Ugrasena, indeed the lord of Mathura, a king born of Yayati's line, ruling in the region of Mathura."

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.7.8.31)

ugrasenātmajaḥ kaṁsaḥ suradveṣī mahābalaḥ daityāṁśaḥ pitaraṁ so'pi kārāgāraṁ nyaveśayat

"Ugrasena's son is Kamsa, a hater of the gods, immensely powerful, a partial incarnation of a demon; he even cast his own father into prison."

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.7.8.32)

svayaṁ rājyaṁ cakārāsau nṛpāṇāṁ madagarvitaḥ medinī cātibhārārtā brahmāṇaṁ śaraṇaṁ gatā

"He himself then ruled the kingdom, arrogant with the pride of kings; and the Earth, sorely burdened, came to me, to Brahma, for refuge."

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.7.8.33)

duṣṭarājanyasainyāyāṁ bhāreṇātisamākulā aṁśāvataraṇaṁ tatra gaditaṁ surasattamaiḥ

"— overwhelmed by the burden of wicked kings and their armies; and the descent of the divine portions of the gods upon the earth was decreed there by the foremost of the gods."

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.7.8.34)

vāsudevaḥ samutpannaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ kamalalocanaḥ devakyāṁ devarūpiṇyāṁ yo'sau nārāyaṇo muniḥ

"Vasudeva's son has been born — Krishna, the lotus-eyed — to Devaki, of divine form; he who is that very sage Narayana —"

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.7.8.35)

tapaścacāra duḥsādhyaṁ dharmaputraḥ sanātanaḥ gaṅgātīre narasakhaḥ puṇye badarikāśrame

"— eternal son of Dharma, performed austerity, so hard to accomplish, on the bank of the Ganga, in the sacred hermitage of Badarika, together with his companion Nara."

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.7.8.36)

so'vatīrṇo yadukule vāsudevo'pi viśrutaḥ tenāsau nihataḥ pāpaḥ kaṁsaḥ kṛṣṇena sattama

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.7.8.38)

āgatya mathurāṁ krodhāccakāra saṅgaraṁ mudā kṛṣṇenāsau jitaḥ saṅkhye jarāsandho mahābalaḥ

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.7.8.40)

"Krishna left Mathura and went to the city of Dvaravati; that ruined city Krishna, together with skilled craftsmen he had gathered, had fortified with strong ramparts and adorned with rows of markets. Having thus restored the ancient city, that mighty son of Vasudeva also brought King Ugrasena under his sway. That foremost of the Yadus settled the Yadavas in Dvaravati; and Vasudeva now dwells there together with his kinsmen."

Vyasa said: Thus instructed by Brahma, lotus-born, the king went swiftly, O king, to Dvaraka, together with his daughter.

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.7.8.45)

dadau tāṁ baladevāya kanyāṁ vai śubhalakṣaṇām tatastaptvā tapastīvraṁ nṛpatiḥ kālaparyaye

He gave that auspicious-marked maiden to Baladeva; then, having performed intense austerity, that king, at the passing of time,

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.7.8.46)

jagāma tridaśāvāsaṁ tyaktvā dehaṁ sarittaṭe rājovāca - bhagavanmahadāścaryaṁ bhavatā samudāhṛtam

— went to the abode of the thirty gods, having relinquished his body on the bank of a river. The king said: "O blessed one, a great wonder has been recounted by you."

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.7.8.47)

kanyā vṛddhā na sañjātā rājā vātitarāṁ nu kim etāvantaṁ tathā kālamāyuḥ pūrṇaṁ tayoḥ katham

"— yet his daughter did not grow old, nor did the king himself, it seems. How did their span of life remain complete for such an immense span of time?"

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.7.8.49)

vyāsa uvāca na jarā kṣupitpāsā vā na mṛtyurna bhayaṁ punaḥ na tu glāniḥ prabhavati brahmaloke sadānagha

Vyasa said: There is neither old age, nor hunger, nor thirst, nor death, nor fear, nor indeed any weariness that can arise in Brahmaloka, O sinless one, ever.

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.7.8.50)

While Sharyati had gone to Meru, his descendants were slain by demons; his people abandoned Kushasthali and fled in fear here and there.

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.7.8.51)

vaṁśārthaṁ tapa ātiṣṭhaddevīṁ dhyātvā nirantaram nāradasyopadeśena prāpya dīkṣāmanuttamām

For the sake of his lineage he undertook austerity, meditating unceasingly on the Devi, having obtained the supreme initiation through Narada's instruction.

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.7.8.53)

The king celebrated as Ikshvaku dwelt in Ayodhya; his sons, headed by Shakuni, most powerful, numbered fifty.

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.7.8.55)

uttarāpathadeśasya rakṣitāraḥ kṛtāḥ kila dakṣiṇasyāṁ tathā rājannādiṣṭāstena te sutāḥ
