Chapter 9All chaptersChapter 11

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.8.10.1)

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | hiraṇmaye nāma varṣe bhagavānkūrmarūpadhṛk | āste yogapatiḥ so'yamaryamṇā pūjya īḍyate

Shri Narayana said: In the region named Hiranmaya, the Blessed Lord, bearing the form of a Tortoise, dwells; that Lord of yoga is worshipped and praised by Aryaman.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.8.10.2)

aryamovāca | oṁ namo bhagavate akūpārāya sarvasattvaguṇa\- viśeṣaṇāya nopalakṣitasthānāya namo varṣmaṇe namo bhūmne namo'vasthānāya namaste | yadrūpametannijamāyayārpita\- marthasvarūpaṁ bahurūparūpitam | saṅkhyā na yasyāstyayathopalambhanā\- ttasmai namaste'vyapadeśarūpiṇe

Aryaman said: "Om, salutation to the Blessed Akupara, the boundless one, distinguished by every excellence of quality among all beings; salutation to you whose abode cannot be located; salutation to the vast one; salutation to the immensity; salutation to the very ground of abiding; salutation to you. That form of yours, this reality bestowed by your own Maya, cast into manifold forms — of which there can be no true reckoning, since it is grasped only by imperfect perception — to you, of unassignable form, salutation."

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.8.10.3)

jarāyujaṁ svedajamaṇḍajodbhidaṁ carācaraṁ devarṣipitṛbhūtamaindriyam | dyauḥ khaṁ kṣitiḥ śailasaritsamudraṁ dvīpagraharkṣetyabhidheya ekaḥ

"Born from the womb, from sweat, from an egg, and sprouting from the earth; the moving and the unmoving, gods, sages, ancestors, elemental beings, and the objects of sense; heaven, sky, earth, mountain, river, ocean, continent, planet and star — all this, called by such names, is but one."

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.8.10.4)

yasminnasaṅkhyeyaviśeṣanāma\- rūpākṛtau kavibhiḥ kalpiteyam | saṅkhyā yayā tattvadṛśāpanīyate tasmai namaḥ sāṅkhyanidarśanāya te

"In whom the sages have imagined countless particular names, forms and shapes — the very reckoning which the seers of truth set aside — to you, the demonstrator of that discernment, salutation."

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.8.10.5)

evaṁ stuvati deveśamaryamā saha varṣapaiḥ | gīyate cāpi bhajate sarvabhūtabhavaṁ prabhum

Thus Aryaman, together with the guardians of that region, praises the Lord of gods, and that Lord, the source of the existence of all beings, is likewise sung of and worshipped.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.8.10.6)

tathottareṣu kuruṣu bhagavānyajñapūruṣaḥ | ādivārāharūpo'sau dharaṇyā pūjyate sadā

Likewise, in the northern Kuru region, the Blessed Person of sacrifice, in his primeval Boar-form, is ever worshipped by the Earth.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.8.10.7)

sampūjya vidhivaddevaṁ tadbhaktyārdrārdrahṛtkajā | bhūmiḥ stauti hariṁ yajñavārāhaṁ daityamardanam

Having duly worshipped the god according to rite, the Earth, her lotus-heart moistened with devotion for him, praises Hari, the sacrificial Boar, crusher of the demon.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.8.10.8)

bhūruvāca | oṁ namo bhagavate mantratattvaliṅgāya yajñakratave mahādhvarāvayavāya mahāvarāhāya namaḥ karmaśuklāya triyugāya namaste

Bhu (the Earth) said: "Om, salutation to the Blessed One, whose form is the very mark of the essence of the mantras, the sacrificial rite itself; to the one whose limbs are the parts of the great sacrifice; salutation to the great Boar; to the one of pure action; salutation to the one existing through the three yugas."

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.8.10.9)

yasya svarūpaṁ kavayo vipaścito guṇeṣu dāruṣviva jātavedasam | mathnanti mathnā manasā didṛkṣavo gūḍhaṁ kriyārthairnama īritātmane

"Whose true form the learned poets, desiring to see it as it lies hidden among the qualities like fire hidden within sticks of wood, churn out with the churning-rod of the mind through ritual acts; salutation to that One whose self is thus made known."

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.8.10.10)

dravyakriyāhetvayaneśakartṛbhi\- rmāyāguṇairvastubhirīkṣitātmane | anvīkṣayāṅgātiśayātmabuddhibhi\- rnirastamāyākṛtaye namo'stu te

"By the causes of substance and action, by means, abode, lord and doer — by these gunas and objects of Maya your self is beheld — you whose Maya-fashioned form the wise, through inference from the surpassing excess of the (world's) limbs, have set aside; salutation to you."

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.8.10.11)

karoti viśvasthitisaṁyamodayaṁ yasyepsitaṁ nepsitumīkṣiturguṇaiḥ | māyā yathā'yo bhramate tadāśrayaṁ grāvṇo namaste guṇakarmasākṣiṇe

"You who bring about the sustaining, restraint, and arising of the universe, to whom nothing is truly desired, though it appears desired through the qualities of the beholder; Maya moves as iron does, in dependence on you — O witness of the gunas and their deeds, salutation to you."

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.8.10.12)

pramathya daityaṁ prativāraṇaṁ mṛdhe yo māṁ rasāyā jagadādisūkaraḥ | kṛtvāgradaṁṣṭraṁ niragādudanvataḥ krīḍannivebhaḥ praṇatāsmi taṁ vibhum

"Having crushed the opposing demon in battle, he — becoming the primeval Boar of the universe — raised me up from the depths on the tip of his tusk and emerged from the ocean as though sporting like an elephant; to that mighty Lord I bow."

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.8.10.13)

kimpuruṣe varṣe'sminbhagavantaṁ dāśarathiṁ ca sarveśam | sītārāmaṁ devaṁ śrīhanumānādipūruṣaṁ stauti

In this Kimpurusha-varsha, Hanuman, foremost among beings, praises the Blessed Lord, the son of Dasharatha, the Lord of all, the God Sitarama.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.8.10.14)

oṁ namo bhagavate uttamaślokāya nama iti | āryalakṣaṇaśīlavratāya nama upaśikṣitātmane upāsitalokāya namaḥ | sādhuvādanikaṣaṇāya namo brahmaṇyadevāya mahāpuruṣāya mahābhāgāya nama iti | yattadviśuddhānubhavātmamekaṁ svatejasā dhvastaguṇavyavastham | pratyak praśāntaṁ sudhiyopalambhanaṁ hyanāmarūpaṁ nirahaṁ prapadye

"Om, salutation to the Blessed One of exalted renown; salutation to the one of noble character, conduct and vow; salutation to the one of disciplined self; salutation to the one worshipped by all the worlds; salutation to the very touchstone of righteous speech; salutation to the God who is the friend of Brahmins, the Great Person, the most fortunate one. I take refuge in that One, of the very nature of pure experience, the one whose own splendour has dissolved the ordering of the gunas, inwardly quiescent, apprehended only by the clear-minded, without name or form, without ego."

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.8.10.15)

martyāvatārastviha martyaśikṣaṇaṁ rakṣovadhāyaiva na kevalaṁ vibho | kuto'nyathā syād''ramataḥ sva ātmanaḥ sītākṛtāni vyasanānīśvarasya

"O Mighty One, this mortal incarnation of yours is here for the instruction of mortals, not merely for the slaying of the demon; for otherwise, how could these calamities born of Sita ever befall the Lord who delights only in his own Self?"

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.8.10.16)

"The Blessed Vasudeva, the very Self and best friend of those who possess the Self, is not attached to the three worlds; he does not incur the taint caused by a woman's grief, nor is it fitting for him ever to abandon his own true nature."

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.8.10.17)

na janma nūnaṁ mahato na saubhagaṁ na vāṅ na buddhirnākṛtistoṣahetuḥ | tairyadvisṛṣṭānapi no vanaukasa\- ścakāra sakhye bata lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ

"It was surely neither high birth, nor good fortune, nor eloquence, nor intellect, nor bodily form that was the cause of his favour — by which qualities we, dwellers of the forest, might otherwise have been despised — and yet, how wondrous, the elder brother of Lakshmana made friendship with us!"

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.8.10.18)

suro'suro vāpyathavā naro'naraḥ sarvātmanā yaḥ sukṛtajñamuttamam | bhajeta rāmaṁ manujākṛtiṁ hariṁ ya uttarānanayatkosalān divam

"Whether god or demon, man or one not human, whoever with his whole being shall worship Rama — Hari appearing in human form, most excellent in acknowledging good done to him — he who led the people of northern Koshala to heaven —"

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.8.10.19)

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | evaṁ kimpuruṣe varṣe satyasandhaṁ dṛḍhavratam | rāmaṁ rājīvapatrākṣaṁ hanumān vānarottamaḥ

Shri Narayana said: Thus, in Kimpurusha-varsha, Hanuman, foremost of monkeys, honours Rama, true to his pledge, firm in his vow, lotus-petal-eyed,

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.8.10.20)

stauti gāyati bhaktyā ca sampūjayati sarvaśaḥ | ya etacchṛṇuyāccitraṁ rāmacandrakathānakam | sarvapāpaviśuddhātmā yāti rāmasalokatām

praising and singing of him with devotion, and worshipping him in every way. Whoever shall hear this wondrous tale of Ramachandra, his self purified of every sin, shall attain the world of Rama.
