Skandha 8 · Chapter 9
Harivarsha, Ketumala, and Ramyaka
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.8.9.1)
śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | harivarṣe ca bhagavānnṛhariḥ pāpanāśanaḥ | vartate yogayuktātmā bhaktānugrahakārakaḥ
Shri Narayana said: In Harivarsha, the Blessed Nrihari, destroyer of sin, dwells, his self joined in yoga, ever bestowing grace upon his devotees.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.8.9.2)
tasya taddayitaṁ rūpaṁ mahābhāgavato'suraḥ | paśyanbhaktisamāyuktaḥ stauti tadguṇatattvavit
Beholding that form dear to him, the great devotee among the demons, Prahlada, united with devotion, knower of the truth of his qualities, offers praise.
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.8.9.3)
prahlāda uvāca | oṁ namo bhagavate narasiṁhāya namastejastejase āvirāvirbhava vajradaṁṣṭra karmāśayān randhaya randhaya tamo grasa grasa oṁ svāhā | abhayaṁ mamātmani bhūyiṣṭhāḥ || oṁ kṣaum || svastyastu viśvasya khalaḥ prasīdatāṁ dhyāyantu bhūtāni śivaṁ mitho dhiyā | manaśca bhadraṁ bhajatādadhokṣaje āveśyatāṁ no matirapyahaitukī
Prahlada said: "Om, salutation to the Blessed Narasimha, salutation to the splendour of splendours! O thunderbolt-fanged one, manifest, manifest! Rend, rend the store of our deeds! Devour, devour our darkness! Om, svaha! Let fearlessness abound most fully within my own self! Om kshaum! May the world be well; may the wicked grow gracious; may beings meditate on one another's welfare with goodwill; and may the mind turn to what is auspicious, devoted to the Transcendent One; and may our understanding, uncaused though it be, be absorbed in you."
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.8.9.4)
māgāradārātmajavittabandhuṣu saṅgo yadi syādbhagavatpriyeṣu naḥ | yaḥ prāṇavṛttyā parituṣṭa ātmavān siddhyatyadūrānna tathendriyapriyaḥ
"If we must have attachment at all — to house, wife, children, wealth, and kin — let it be to those dear to the Blessed Lord; he who, self-possessed, is content with the mere maintenance of the breath of life attains perfection before long — not so one fond of the senses."
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.8.9.5)
yatsaṅgalabdhaṁ nijavīryavaibhavaṁ tīrthaṁ muhuḥ saṁspṛśatāṁ hi mānasam | haratyajo'ntaḥ śrutibhirgato'ṅgajaṁ ko vai na seveta mukundavikramam
"That majestic might of his, gained through contact with him — a sacred crossing-place which, touched again and again in thought, purifies the mind — the Unborn One, reached through the ears, takes away from within the sin born of the body; who indeed would not serve the might of Mukunda?"
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.8.9.6)
yasyāsti bhaktirbhagavatyakiñcanā sarvairguṇaistatra samāsate surāḥ | harāvabhaktasya kuto mahadguṇā manorathenāsati dhāvato bahiḥ
"In one who has unalloyed devotion to the Blessed Lord, all virtues dwell together, as the gods dwell together in heaven; but whence come great virtues in one without devotion to Hari, running outward after the unreal, driven by mere fancy?"
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.8.9.7)
harirhi sākṣādbhagavāñcharīriṇā\- mātmā jhaṣāṇāmiva toyamīpsitam | hitvā mahāṁstaṁ yadi sajjate gṛhe tadā mahattvaṁ vayasā dampatīnām
"Hari is directly the very Self of embodied beings, as water is the longed-for thing for fish; if one abandons that great one and clings instead to the household, then all that is left to the couple is the mere greatness that comes with age."
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.8.9.8)
tasmādrajorāgaviṣādamanyu\- mānaspṛhābhayadainyādhimūlam | hitvā gṛhaṁ saṁsṛticakravālaṁ nṛsiṁhapādaṁ bhajatāṁ kuto bhayam
"Therefore, abandoning the household — the very root of passion, attachment, despair, wrath, pride, craving, fear and misery, the wheel of transmigration — for those devoted to the feet of Nrisimha, whence should fear arise?"
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.8.9.9)
evaṁ daityapatiḥ so'pi bhaktyānudinamīḍate | nṛhariṁ pāpamātaṅgahariṁ hṛtpadmavāsinam
Thus that lord of demons too extols, day after day and with devotion, Nrihari — the lion to the elephant that is sin — who dwells in the lotus of the heart.
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.8.9.10)
ketumāle ca varṣe hi bhagavānsmararūpadhṛk | āste tadvarṣanāthānāṁ pūjanīyaśca sarvadā
In Ketumala-varsha the Blessed Lord dwells, bearing the form of Kama, and he is ever worshipped by the lords of that region.
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.8.9.11)
etenopāsate stotrajālena ca ramābdhijā | tadvarṣanāthā satataṁ mahatāṁ mānadāyikā
With this web of hymns Rama, who was born of the ocean, worships him; and the lords of that region, ever honouring the great —
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.8.9.12)
ramovāca | oṁ hrāṁ hrīṁ hrūṁ sma namo bhagavate hṛṣīkeśāya sarvaguṇaviśeṣairvilakṣitātmane ākūtīnāṁ cittīnāṁ cetasāṁ viśeṣāṇāṁ cādhipataye ṣoḍaśakalāya chandomayāyānnamayāyāmṛtamayāya sarvamayāya mahase ojase balāya kāntāya kāmāya namaste ubhayatra bhūyāt | striyo vrataistvāṁ hṛṣīkeśvaraṁ svato hyārādhya loke patimāśāsate'nyam | tāsāṁ na te vai paripāntyapatyaṁ priyaṁ dhanāyūṁṣi yato'svatantrāḥ
Rama said: "Om, hram, hrim, hrum, salutation to the Blessed Hrishikesha, whose self is distinguished by every excellence of quality; to the overlord of intentions, of thoughts, of minds, and of their particular modes; to the sixteen-fold one, made of the metres, made of food, made of nectar, made of everything, to splendour, to vigour, to strength, to the beautiful one, to Desire himself — salutation to you, in both worlds. Women, by their own vows, worship you as Hrishikeshvara, yet still seek another as husband in this world; but for them you do not truly guard offspring, beloved wealth, or lifespan, since they are not their own masters."
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.8.9.13)
sa vai patiḥ syādakutobhayaḥ svataḥ samantataḥ pāti bhayāturaṁ janam | sa eka evetarathā mitho bhayaṁ naivātmalābhādadhimanyate param
"He alone can be a true husband who is himself wholly beyond fear, who protects on every side the fear-stricken people; he alone is such — otherwise mutual fear alone would remain; he considers nothing higher than the attainment of his own Self."
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.8.9.14)
"She who, though steeped in every desire, does not wish for the worship of your lotus feet — she it is who truly obtains what she desires when, O Blessed Lord, her petition refused, she is made to suffer, however worshipped and sought after she may be."
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.8.9.15)
matprāptaye'jeśasurāsurādaya\- stapyanta ugraṁ tapa aindriye dhiyaḥ | ṛte bhavatpādaparāyaṇānna māṁ vidantyahaṁ tvaddhṛdayā yato'jita
"To attain me, O Unborn Lord, gods and demons and the rest perform fierce austerity, yet their understanding stays fixed on the objects of the senses; save for those devoted solely to your feet, they do not know me — for, O Unconquered One, I belong to your heart alone."
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.8.9.16)
sa tvaṁ mamāpyacyuta śīrṣṇi vanditaṁ karāmbujaṁ yattvadadhāyi sātvatām | bibharṣi māṁ lakṣya vareṇya māyayā ka īśvarasyehitamūhituṁ vibhuḥ
"O Infallible One, you bear even me upon your head — that lotus hand of yours which was placed upon your devotees; O most excellent one, you sustain me through your Maya; who indeed is capable of fathoming the Lord's intent?"
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.8.9.17)
evaṁ kāmaṁ stuvantyeva lokabandhusvarūpiṇam | prajāpatimukhā varṣanāthāḥ kāmasya siddhaye
Thus the lords of that region, headed by Prajapati, praise the one who is the very form of the friend of all the worlds, for the fulfilment of desire.
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.8.9.18)
ramyake nāmavarṣe ca mūrtiṁ bhagavataḥ parām | mātsyāṁ devāsurairvandyāṁ manuḥ stauti nirantaram
In the region named Ramyaka, Manu unceasingly praises the supreme Fish-form of the Blessed Lord, revered by gods and demons.
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.8.9.19)
manuruvāca | oṁ namo bhagavate mukhyatamāya namaḥ sattvāya prāṇāyaujase balāya mahāmatsyāya namaḥ | antarbahiścākhilalokapālakai\- radṛṣṭarūpo vicarasyurusvanaḥ | sa īśvarastvaṁ ya idaṁ vaśe naya\- nnāmnā yathā dārumayīṁ naraḥ striyam
Manu said: "Om, salutation to the Blessed One, the foremost of all, salutation to Sattva, to the Breath, to Vigour, to Strength, to the Great Fish. Within and without, unseen in form by all the guardians of the worlds, you range about, of vast resounding voice; you are the Lord who leads all this under your sway, as a man leads about a wooden puppet by name alone."
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.8.9.20)
yaṁ lokapālāḥ kila matsarajvarā hitvā yatanto'pi pṛthak sametya ca | pātuṁ na śekurdvipadaścatuṣpadaḥ sarīsṛpaṁ sthāṇu yadatra dṛśyate
"Whom the guardians of the worlds, feverish with envy, though striving apart and together, could not manage to protect — the two-footed, the four-footed, the creeping, and the standing creatures seen here —"
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.8.9.21)
bhavān yugāntārṇava ūrmimālini kṣoṇīmimāmoṣadhivīrudhāṁ nidhim | mayā sahorukrama te'ja ojasā tasmai jagatprāṇagaṇātmane namaḥ
"you, in the wave-garlanded ocean at the end of an age, bore up this earth, storehouse of herbs and creepers, together with me, by your own might, O far-striding Unborn One; to you, whose very self is the assembled life-breath of the world, salutation."
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.8.9.22)
evaṁ stauti ca deveśaṁ manuḥ pārthivasattamaḥ | matsyāvatāraṁ deveśaṁ saṁśayacchedakāraṇam
Thus Manu, foremost among earthly kings, praises the Lord of gods in his incarnation as the Fish, the very cause of the cutting away of doubt.
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.8.9.23)
dhyānayogena devasya nirdhūtāśeṣakalmaṣaḥ | āste paricaranbhaktyā mahābhāgavatottamaḥ
By the discipline of meditation on the Lord, his sins entirely shaken off, that supreme and foremost devotee remains, serving him with devotion.
