Shri Narayana said: The Lord, having duly established the earth in her place, O Narada, went to Vaikuntha-loka; then Brahma spoke to his own son.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.8.3.2)

svāyambhūva mahābāho putra tejasvināṁvara | sthāne mahīmaye tiṣṭha prajāḥ sṛja yathocitam

"O mighty-armed one, son Svayambhuva, foremost of the radiant! Remain in this place made of earth, and create beings as is fitting.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.8.3.3)

deśakālavibhāgena yajñeśaṁ puruṣaṁ yaja | uccāvacapadārthaiśca yajñasādhanakairvibho

According to the division of place and time, with the various high and low materials that serve as the means of sacrifice, O mighty one, worship the Person who is Lord of sacrifice.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.8.3.4)

dharmamācara śāstroktaṁ varṇāśramanibandhanam | etena kramayogena prajāvṛddhirbhaviṣyati

Practise the dharma declared in the scriptures, bound to the order of varna and ashrama; by this graduated method the increase of your progeny shall come about.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.8.3.5)

putrānutpādya guṇataḥ kīrtyā kāntyātmarūpiṇaḥ | vidyāvinayasampannān sadācāravatāṁ varān

Having begotten sons endowed with virtue, fame, radiance, and beauty of form, possessed of learning and humility, foremost among those of good conduct,

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.8.3.6)

kanyāśca dattvā guṇavadyaśovadbhyaḥ samāhitaḥ | manaḥ samyak samādhāya pradhānapuruṣe pare

and having given your daughters to virtuous and famed men, and, with composed mind, having fixed your attention rightly upon the Supreme Person,

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.8.3.7)

bhaktisādhanayogena bhagavatparicaryayā | gatimiṣṭāṁ sadā vandyāṁ yogināṁ gamitā bhavān

by the discipline of devotion, through service of the Blessed Lord, you shall attain the desired goal, ever adored by the yogis."

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.8.3.8)

ityāśvāsya manuṁ putra padmayoniḥ prajāpatiḥ | prajāsarge niyamyāmuṁ svadhāma pratyapadyata

Having thus reassured his son Manu, Prajapati, the lotus-born Brahma, having appointed him to the creation of progeny, returned to his own abode.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.8.3.9)

prajāḥ sṛjata putreti piturājñāṁ samādadhat | svāyambhuvaḥ prajāsargamakarotpṛthivīpatiḥ

"Create progeny, O son" — bearing this command of his father, Svayambhuva, lord of the earth, undertook the creation of beings.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.8.3.10)

priyavratottānapādau manuputrau mahaujasau | kanyāstisraḥ prasūtāśca tāsāṁ nāmāni me śṛṇu

Priyavrata and Uttanapada, the two sons of Manu, of great vigour, were born; and three daughters were born as well — hear their names from me.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.8.3.11)

ākūtiḥ prathamā kanyā dvitīyā devahūtikā | tṛtīyā ca prasūtirhi vikhyātā lokapāvanī

Akuti was the first daughter, Devahuti the second, and Prasuti, renowned as the purifier of the world, the third.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.8.3.12)

ākūtiṁ rucaye prādātkardamāya ca madhyamām | dakṣāyādātprasūtiṁ ca yāsāṁ loka imāḥ prajāḥ

Akuti he gave to Ruchi, the middle one to Kardama, and Prasuti to Daksha — from whom all this progeny of the world was born.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.8.3.13)

From Ruchi, in Akuti, was born the Blessed Yajna, a primal person by that name; and from Kardama, in Devahuti, Kapila was born.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.8.3.14)

sāṅkhyācāryaḥ sarvaloke vikhyātaḥ kapilo vibhuḥ | dakṣātprasūtyāṁ kanyāśca bahuśo jajñire prajāḥ

That mighty Kapila is renowned throughout the whole world as the teacher of Sankhya; and from Daksha, in Prasuti, many daughters were likewise born.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.8.3.15)

yāsāṁ santānasambhūtā devatiryaṅnarādayaḥ | prasūtā lokavikhyātā sarve sargapravartakāḥ

From whose offspring gods, animals, men and the rest were born — celebrated throughout the worlds, all of them promoters of creation.

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.8.3.16)

yajñaśca bhagavān svāyambhuvamanvantare vibhuḥ | manuṁ rarakṣa rakṣobhyo yāmairdevagaṇairvṛtaḥ

And in the Svayambhuva Manvantara, the Blessed Yajna, surrounded by the bands of gods called the Yamas, protected Manu from the demons.

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.8.3.17)

kapilo'pi mahāyogī bhagavān svāśrame sthitaḥ | devahūtyai paraṁ jñānaṁ sarvāvidyānivartakam

Kapila too, the great yogin, the Blessed Lord, established in his own hermitage, imparted to Devahuti the supreme knowledge that removes all ignorance,

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.8.3.18)

saviśeṣaṁ dhyānayogamadhyātmajñānaniścayam | kāpilaṁ śāstramākhyātaṁ sarvājñānavināśanam

the discipline of meditation together with its particulars, and the ascertainment of self-knowledge — the Kapila teaching, destroyer of all unwisdom.

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.8.3.19)

upadiśya mahāyogī sa yayau pulahāśramam | adyāpi vartate devaḥ sāṅkhyācāryo mahāśayaḥ

Having given this teaching, the great yogin went to the hermitage of Pulaha; even to this day that great-minded god remains as teacher of Sankhya.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.8.3.20)

yannāmasmaraṇenāpi sāṅkhyayogaśca siddhyati | taṁ vande kapilaṁ yogācāryaṁ sarvavarapradam

By the mere remembrance of whose name Sankhya-yoga too is accomplished — I bow to that Kapila, teacher of yoga, giver of every boon.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.8.3.21)

evamuktaṁ manoḥ kanyāvaṁśavarṇanamuttamam | paṭhatāṁ śṛṇvatāṁ cāpi sarvapāpavināśanam

Thus has this excellent account of the lineage of Manu's daughters been told, which destroys all sin for those who read or hear it too.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.8.3.22)

ataḥ paraṁ pravakṣyāmi manuputrānvayaṁ śubham | yadākarṇanamātreṇa paraṁ padamavāpnuyāt

Hereafter I shall declare the auspicious lineage of Manu's sons, by merely hearing which one attains the supreme state.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.8.3.23)

dvīpavarṣasamudrādivyavasthā yatsutaiḥ kṛtā | vyavahāraprasiddhyarthaṁ sarvabhūtasukhāptaye

the arrangement of the continents, the regions, the oceans and the rest, which was made by his sons for the establishment of worldly order and for the attainment of the happiness of all beings.
