the maker of countless Brahmas, eternal from the very beginning of creation, ever appearing as a twelve-year-old maiden in the freshness of youth —

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.9.13.34)

viśvavṛnde nirupamāṁ rūpeṇa ca guṇena ca | śāntāṁ kāntāmanantāṁ tāmādyantarahitāṁ satīm

unrivalled among all the universes in beauty and in virtue, tranquil, lovely, infinite, that chaste one without beginning or end —

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.9.13.35)

śubhāṁ subhadrāṁ subhagāṁ svāmisaubhāgyasaṁyutām | saundaryasundarīṁ śreṣṭhāṁ sarvāsu sundarīṣu ca

auspicious, wholly blessed, fortunate, endowed with her lord's own good fortune, more beautiful than beauty itself, foremost among all beautiful women —

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.9.13.36)

kṛṣṇārdhāṅgāṁ kṛṣṇasamāṁ tejasā vayasā tviṣā | pūjitāṁ ca mahālakṣmīṁ lakṣmyā lakṣmīśvareṇa ca

Krishna's own other half, equal to him in splendor, age, and radiance, and worshipped, this Mahalakshmi, by Lakshmi herself and by Lakshmi's own Lord —

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.9.13.37)

pracchādyamānāṁ prabhayā sabhāmīśasya suprabhām | sakhīdattaṁ ca tāmbūlaṁ bhuktavantīṁ ca durlabham

her radiance so bright it eclipsed even the splendor of the Lord's own assembly, partaking of a rare betel leaf given by her companion —

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.9.13.38)

ajanyāṁ sarvajananīṁ dhanyāṁ mānyāṁ ca māninīm | kṛṣṇaprāṇādhidevīṁ ca prāṇapriyatamāṁ ramām

unborn herself, mother of all, blessed, honored, and rightfully proud, the presiding deity of Krishna's own life-breath, Rama, dearer to him than his own life —

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.9.13.39)

dṛṣṭvā rāseśvarīṁ tṛptiṁ na jagāma sureśvarī | nimeṣarahitābhyāṁ ca locanābhyāṁ papau ca tām

Beholding that mistress of the rasa dance, the sovereign Ganga could not find her fill; without blinking, she drank her in with her own eyes.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.9.13.40)

etasminnantare rādhā jagadīśamuvāca sā | vācā madhurayā śāntā vinītā sasmitā mune

O sage, at that very moment Radha, tranquil, humble, and smiling, spoke to the Lord of the world in sweet words —

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.9.13.41)

rādhovāca | keyaṁ prāṇeśa kalyāṇī sasmitā tvanmukhāmbujam | paśyantī sasmitaṁ pārśve sakāmā vakralocanā

Radha said: O lord of my life, who is this fair one, smiling, seated beside you and smiling still, filled with desire, gazing with sidelong glances upon your lotus face?

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.9.13.42)

mūrcchāṁ prāpnoti rūpeṇa pulakāṅkitavigrahā | vastreṇa mukhamācchādya nirīkṣantī punaḥ punaḥ

She swoons at the very sight of your beauty, her body thrilling with joy; veiling her face with her garment, she gazes upon you again and again.

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.9.13.43)

tvaṁ cāpi tāṁ sannirīkṣya sakāmaḥ sasmitaḥ sadā | mayi jīvati goloke bhūtā durvṛttirīdṛśī

and you too, gazing upon her, remain ever filled with desire and smiling — that such misconduct should occur while I still live here in Goloka —

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.9.13.44)

tvameva caiva durvṛttaṁ vāraṁ vāraṁ karoṣi ca | kṣamāṁ karomi premṇā ca strījātiḥ snigdhamānasā

it is you yourself who commit this misconduct again and again; yet, being of the tender-hearted nature of womankind, I forgive you out of love.

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.9.13.45)

O lecher, take this beloved of yours and leave Goloka; O lord of Vraja, otherwise no good shall come of it for you.

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.9.13.46)

dṛṣṭastvaṁ virajāyukto mayā candanakānane | kṣamā kṛtā mayā pūrvaṁ sakhīnāṁ vacanādaho

I saw you before, in the sandal grove, together with Viraja; ah, even then I forgave you, at the urging of my companions.

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.9.13.47)

tvayā macchabdamātreṇa tirodhānaṁ kṛtaṁ purā | dehaṁ tatyāja virajā nadīrūpā babhūva sā

Long ago, at the mere sound of my name, you vanished from there; Viraja too gave up her body and became a river.

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.9.13.48)

koṭiyojanavistīrṇā tato dairghye caturguṇā | adyāpi vidyamānā sā tava satkīrtirūpiṇī

She, ten million yojanas in breadth, four times that in length, exists to this day, the very embodiment of your good name.

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.9.13.49)

When I had gone home, you returned once more to her side, and, crying "Viraja, Viraja," wept aloud, remembering her.

tadā toyātsamutthāya sā yogātsiddhayoginī | sālaṅkārā mūrtimatī dadau tubhyaṁ ca darśanam

Then that perfected yogini, rising from the water through her yogic power, took embodied form, adorned with ornaments, and appeared before you.

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.9.13.51)

tatastāṁ ca samākṣipya vīryādhānaṁ kṛtaṁ tvayā | tato babhūvustasyāṁ ca samudrāḥ sapta eva ca

Then, drawing her to yourself, you deposited your seed within her; and from her, the seven oceans themselves came into being.

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.9.13.52)

śobhā dehaṁ parityajya jagāma candramaṇḍale | tatastasyāḥ śarīraṁ ca snigdhaṁ tejo babhūva ha

Shobha, giving up her body, entered into the orb of the moon; and from her body arose that soft, lustrous radiance.

saṁvibhajya tvayā dattaṁ hṛdayena vidūyatā | ratnāya kiñcitsvarṇāya kiñcinmaṇivarāya ca

With an aching heart, you divided that radiance and gave it away — some to gems, some to gold, some to the finest jewels —

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.9.13.55)

kiñcinnūtanapatrebhyo dugdhebhyaścāpi kiñcana | dṛṣṭastvaṁ prabhayā gopyā yukto vṛndāvane vane

some to fresh leaves, and some to milk too. I saw you also, in the forest of Vrindavana, together with a gopi named Prabha.

Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.9.13.58)

sadyo macchabdamātreṇa tirodhānaṁ kṛtaṁ tvayā | prabhā dehaṁ parityajya jagāma sūryamaṇḍale

And then too, at the mere sound of my name, you vanished at once; Prabha, giving up her body, entered into the orb of the sun.

Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.9.13.59)

tatastasyāḥ śarīraṁ ca tīvraṁ tejo babhūva ha | saṁvibhajya tvayā dattaṁ premṇā prarudatā purā

And from her body arose that fierce radiance; that too you, weeping in love, divided and gave away.

Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.9.13.60)

visṛṣṭaṁ cakṣuṣoḥ kṛṣṇa lajjayā madbhayena ca | hutāśanāya kiñcicca yakṣebhyaścāpi kiñcana

O Krishna, that radiance, released through your own eyes out of shame and out of fear of me — some to Fire, some to the Yakshas too —

Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.9.13.61)

kiñcitpuruṣasiṁhebhyo devebhyaścāpi kiñcana | kiñcidviṣṇujanebhyaśca nāgebhyo'pi ca kiñcana

some to lion-like men among heroes, some to the gods too, some to the followers of Vishnu, and some to the serpents too.

Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.9.13.62)

brāhmaṇebhyo munibhyaśca tapasvibhyaśca kiñcana | strībhyaḥ saubhāgyayuktābhyo yaśasvibhyaśca kiñcana

some to brahmins, some to sages, some to ascetics, and some to fortunate and renowned women.

Verse 63 (devibhagavatam.9.13.63)

tattu dattvā ca sarvebhyaḥ pūrvaṁ praruditaṁ tvayā | śāntigopyā yutastvaṁ ca dṛṣṭo'si rāsamaṇḍale

All that you, weeping then, gave away to everyone. I saw you also, within the rasa circle, together with a gopi named Shanti.

Verse 64 (devibhagavatam.9.13.64)

vasante puṣpaśayyāyāṁ mālyavāṁścandanokṣitaḥ | ratnapradīpairyukte ca ratnanirmāṇamandire

In the springtime, upon a bed of flowers, garlanded, anointed with sandal paste, within a jeweled pavilion lit by lamps of gems —

Verse 65 (devibhagavatam.9.13.65)

ratnabhūṣaṇabhūṣāḍhyo ratnabhūṣitayā saha | tayā dattaṁ ca tāmbūlaṁ bhuktavāṁśca purā vibho

richly adorned with jeweled ornaments, together with that gopi likewise adorned with gems; O all-pervading Lord, long ago you partook of the betel leaf she offered.

Verse 66 (devibhagavatam.9.13.66)

sadyo macchabdamātreṇa tirodhānaṁ kṛtaṁ tvayā | śāntirdehaṁ parityajya bhiyā līnā tvayi prabho

And then too, at the mere sound of my name, you vanished at once; O Lord, Shanti, giving up her body, out of fear dissolved into you yourself.

Verse 67 (devibhagavatam.9.13.67)

tatastasyāḥ śarīraṁ ca guṇaśreṣṭhaṁ babhūva ha | saṁvibhajya tvayā dattaṁ premṇā prarudatā purā

Then from her body arose that most excellent quality; that too you, weeping once more in love, divided and gave away.

Verse 68 (devibhagavatam.9.13.68)

viśve tu vipine kiñcidbrahmaṇe ca mayi prabho | śuddhasattvasvarūpāyai kiñcillakṣmyai purā vibho

O Lord, some of it to the universe, some to the forest, some to Brahma, and some to me too; O all-pervading one, some, in ancient times, to Lakshmi, of pure sattvic nature.

Verse 69 (devibhagavatam.9.13.69)

tvanmantropāsakebhyaśca śāktebhyaścāpi kiñcana | tapasvibhyaśca dharmāya dharmiṣṭhebhyaśca kiñcana

some to those who worship your mantra, some to the worshippers of Shakti too, some to ascetics for the sake of righteousness, and some to the righteous themselves.

Verse 70 (devibhagavatam.9.13.70)

mayā pūrvaṁ ca tvaṁ dṛṣṭo gopyā ca kṣamayā saha | suveṣayukto mālāvān gandhacandanacarcitaḥ

I saw you before this too, together with a gopi named Kshama, finely attired, garlanded, anointed with fragrant sandal paste —

Verse 71 (devibhagavatam.9.13.71)

ratnabhūṣitayā gandhacandanokṣitayā saha | sukhena mūrcchitastalpe puṣpacandanacarcite

together with that gopi adorned with gems and anointed with fragrant sandal paste, lying in blissful swoon upon a couch strewn with flowers and sandal paste —

Verse 72 (devibhagavatam.9.13.72)

śliṣṭo nidritayā sadyaḥ sukhena navasaṅgamāt | mayā prabodhitā sā ca bhavāṁśca smaraṇaṁ kuru

embraced, fallen at once into sleep from the pleasure of that fresh union — remember that, when she was roused by me, and remember yourself too.

Verse 73 (devibhagavatam.9.13.73)

gṛhītaṁ pītavastraṁ ca muralī ca manoharā | vanamālākaustubhaścāpyamūlyaṁ ratnakuṇḍalam

Your yellow garment was taken, and your enchanting flute, your forest garland, your Kaustubha jewel, and your priceless jeweled earrings too —

Verse 74 (devibhagavatam.9.13.74)

paścātpradattaṁ premṇā ca sakhīnāṁ vacanādaho | lajjayā kṛṣṇavarṇo'bhūdbhavān pāpena yaḥ prabho

ah, and then, at the urging of my companions, it was returned out of love; O Lord, it is said that you became dark of hue precisely out of shame at that misdeed.

Verse 75 (devibhagavatam.9.13.75)

kṣamā dehaṁ parityajya lajjayā pṛthivīṁ gatā | tatastasyāḥ śarīraṁ ca guṇaśreṣṭhaṁ babhūva ha

Kshama too, giving up her body, entered out of shame into the earth; and from her body arose that most excellent quality of forbearance.

Verse 76 (devibhagavatam.9.13.76)

saṁvibhajya tvayā dattaṁ premṇā prarudatā punaḥ | kiñciddattaṁ viṣṇave ca vaiṣṇavebhyaśca kiñcana

That too you, weeping once more in love, divided and gave away — some to Vishnu, some to Vaishnavas —

Verse 77 (devibhagavatam.9.13.77)

dhārmikebhyaśca dharmāya durbalebhyaśca kiñcana | tapasvibhyo'pi devebhyaḥ paṇḍitebhyaśca kiñcana

some to the righteous for the sake of righteousness, some to the weak, some to ascetics, some to the gods, and some to the learned too.

Verse 78 (devibhagavatam.9.13.78)

etatte kathitaṁ sarvaṁ kiṁ bhūyaḥ śrotumicchasi | tvadguṇaṁ caiva bahuśo na jānāmi paraṁ prabho

All this has now been told to you — what more do you wish to hear? O supreme Lord, however often I try, I cannot fully fathom your qualities.

Verse 79 (devibhagavatam.9.13.79)

ityevamuktvā sā rādhā raktapaṅkajalocanā | gaṅgāṁ vaktuṁ samārebhe namrāsyāṁ lajjitāṁ satīm

Having said this, Radha, her eyes red as a lotus, began to speak to that chaste Ganga, whose face was bowed low in shame —

Verse 80 (devibhagavatam.9.13.80)

gaṅgā rahasyaṁ vijñāya yogena siddhayoginī | tirobhūya sabhāmadhye svajalaṁ praviveśa sā

Understanding the meaning of this, that perfected yogini Ganga, through her yogic power, vanished from the midst of the assembly and entered into her own waters.

Verse 81 (devibhagavatam.9.13.81)

rādhā yogena vijñāya sarvatrāvasthitāṁ ca tām | pānaṁ kartuṁ samārebhe gaṇḍūṣātsiddhayoginī

Radha too, through her own yogic power, understood that Ganga now pervaded everything, and began to swallow her down in a single mouthful.

Verse 82 (devibhagavatam.9.13.82)

gaṅgā rahasyaṁ vijñāya yogena siddhayoginī | śrīkṛṣṇacaraṇāmbhoje viveśa śaraṇaṁ yayau

Understanding this danger too, that perfected yogini Ganga entered into Sri Krishna's own lotus feet and took refuge there.

Verse 83 (devibhagavatam.9.13.83)

goloke sā ca vaikuṇṭhe brahmalokādike tathā | dadarśa rādhā sarvatra naiva gaṅgāṁ dadarśa sā

Radha searched in Goloka, in Vaikuntha, in Brahmaloka and the rest — everywhere — but she could find Ganga nowhere at all.

Verse 84 (devibhagavatam.9.13.84)

sarvatra jalaśūnyaṁ ca śuṣkapaṅkaṁ ca golakam | jalajantusamūhaiśca mṛtadehaiḥ samanvitam

Everywhere that sphere had become devoid of water, its mud dried up, strewn with heaps of water-creatures and their dead bodies.

Verse 85 (devibhagavatam.9.13.85)

brahmaviṣṇuśivānantadharmendrendudivākarāḥ | manavo munayaḥ sarve devasiddhatapasvinaḥ

Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Ananta, Dharma, Indra, the Moon, the Sun, all the Manus, sages, gods, adepts, and ascetics —

Verse 86 (devibhagavatam.9.13.86)

golokaṁ ca samājagmuḥ śuṣkakaṇṭhoṣṭhatālukāḥ | sarve praṇemurgovindaṁ sarveśaṁ prakṛteḥ param

their throats, lips, and palates parched, all gathered together in Goloka; all of them bowed to Govinda, lord of all, beyond Prakriti.

Verse 87 (devibhagavatam.9.13.87)

varaṁ vareṇyaṁ varadaṁ variṣṭhaṁ varakāraṇam | gopikāgopavṛndānāṁ sarveṣāṁ pravaraṁ prabhum

the best, the one worthy of choice, the giver of boons, the most exalted, the very cause of every boon, the foremost Lord among all the hosts of gopis and cowherds —

Verse 88 (devibhagavatam.9.13.88)

nirīhaṁ ca nirākāraṁ nirliptaṁ ca nirāśrayam | nirguṇaṁ ca nirutsāhaṁ nirvikāraṁ nirañjanam

desireless, formless, untouched, without support, without attributes, without activity, unchanging, and unstained —

Verse 89 (devibhagavatam.9.13.89)

svecchāmayaṁ ca sākāraṁ bhaktānugrahakārakam | sattvasvarūpaṁ satyeśaṁ sākṣirūpaṁ sanātanam

yet also acting by his own free will, possessed of form, bestowing grace upon devotees, of the very nature of sattva, lord of truth, of the very form of the witness, and eternal —

Verse 90 (devibhagavatam.9.13.90)

paraṁ pareśaṁ paramaṁ paramātmānamīśvaram | praṇamya tuṣṭuvuḥ sarve bhaktinamrātmakandharāḥ

the Supreme, the Lord of the highest, the supreme Self and Lord — bowing to him, all of them, their heads bowed low in devotion, offered praise.

Verse 91 (devibhagavatam.9.13.91)

sagadgadāḥ sāśrunetrāḥ pulakāṅkitavigrahāḥ | sarve saṁstūya sarveśaṁ bhagavantaṁ parātparam

their voices choked, their eyes filled with tears, their bodies thrilling with joy, all of them praised the Blessed Lord of all, higher than the highest —

Verse 92 (devibhagavatam.9.13.92)

jyotirmayaṁ paraṁ brahma sarvakāraṇakāraṇam | amūlyaratnanirmāṇacitrasiṁhāsanasthitam

the luminous Supreme Brahman, the cause of every cause, seated upon a wondrous throne fashioned of priceless gems —

Verse 93 (devibhagavatam.9.13.93)

sevyamānaṁ ca gopālaiḥ śvetacāmaravāyunā | gopālikānṛtyagītaṁ paśyantaṁ sasmitaṁ mudā

attended by cowherds with the breeze of white yak-tail fans, watching, joyfully smiling, the dancing and singing of the gopis —

Verse 94 (devibhagavatam.9.13.94)

prāṇādhikapriyatamaṁ rādhāvakṣaḥsthalasthitam | tayā pradattaṁ tāmbūlaṁ bhuktavantaṁ suvāsitam

dearer than his own life, resting upon Radha's own breast, partaking of the fragrant betel leaf she herself had given —

Verse 95 (devibhagavatam.9.13.95)

paripūrṇatamaṁ rāse dadṛśuśca sureśvaram | munayo manavaḥ siddhāstāpasāśca tapasvinaḥ

they beheld that most complete sovereign Lord within the rasa dance; sages, Manus, adepts, and ascetics, all of them —

Verse 96 (devibhagavatam.9.13.96)

prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ sarve jagmuḥ paramavismayam | parasparaṁ samālokya procuste ca caturmukham

with joyful hearts, all fell into supreme wonder; and looking at one another, they said to the four-faced Brahma —

Verse 97 (devibhagavatam.9.13.97)

niveditaṁ jagannāthaṁ svābhiprāyamabhīpsitam | brahmā tadvacanaṁ śrutvā viṣṇuṁ kṛtvā svadakṣiṇe

that their own wish and desire be conveyed to the Lord of the world; Brahma, hearing their words, placed Vishnu at his right —

Verse 98 (devibhagavatam.9.13.98)

vāmato vāmadevaṁ ca jagāma kṛṣṇasannidhim | paramānandayuktaṁ ca paramānandarūpiṇīm

and Vamadeva, Shiva, at his left, and went into Krishna's own presence, who was filled with supreme bliss, together with the very embodiment of supreme bliss.

Verse 99 (devibhagavatam.9.13.99)

sarvaṁ kṛṣṇamayaṁ dhātā dadarśa rāsamaṇḍale | sarvaṁ samānaveṣaṁ ca samānāsanasaṁsthitam

Brahma the Creator beheld everything within the rasa circle as entirely made of Krishna — everything of identical guise, seated upon identical thrones —

Verse 100 (devibhagavatam.9.13.100)

dvibhujaṁ muralīhastaṁ vanamālāvibhūṣitam | mayūrapicchacūḍaṁ ca kaustubhena virājitam

two-armed, holding a flute, adorned with a forest garland, his crest graced with a peacock feather, resplendent with the Kaustubha jewel —

Verse 101 (devibhagavatam.9.13.101)

atīva kamanīyaṁ ca sundaraṁ śāntavigraham | guṇabhūṣaṇarūpeṇa tejasā vayasā tviṣā

exceedingly lovely, beautiful, tranquil of form, adorned with the ornament of virtue, equal in splendor, age, and radiance —

Verse 102 (devibhagavatam.9.13.102)

paripūrṇatamaṁ sarvaṁ sarvaiśvaryasamanvitam | kiṁ sevyaṁ sevakaṁ kiṁ vā dṛṣṭvā nirvaktumakṣamaḥ

everywhere most complete and possessed of every majesty — beholding this, he was unable even to declare which was the one to be served and which the servant.

Verse 103 (devibhagavatam.9.13.103)

kṣaṇaṁ tejaḥ svarūpaṁ ca rūpaṁ tatra sthitaṁ kṣaṇam | nirākāraṁ ca sākāraṁ dadarśa dvividhaṁ kṣaṇam

For one moment he saw a form of pure radiance, and for another moment a shape abiding within it; for one moment the formless, and for another the possessed of form — thus he beheld both, moment by moment.

Verse 104 (devibhagavatam.9.13.104)

ekameva kṣaṇaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ rādhayā rahitaṁ param | pratyekāsanasaṁsthaṁ ca tayā sārdhaṁ ca tatkṣaṇam

In that very same moment he saw Krishna alone, supreme, apart from Radha, seated separately upon each throne; and in that same moment saw him together with her too.

Verse 105 (devibhagavatam.9.13.105)

rādhārūpadharaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ kṛṣṇarūpaṁ kalatrakam | kiṁ strīrūpaṁ ca puruṣaṁ vidhātā dhyātumakṣamaḥ

He saw Krishna bearing Radha's own form, and his consort bearing Krishna's form in turn; the Creator was unable even to determine, by meditation, which was the female form and which the male.

Verse 106 (devibhagavatam.9.13.106)

hṛtpadmasthaṁ ca śrīkṛṣṇaṁ dhyātvā dhyānena cakṣuṣā | cakāra stavanaṁ bhaktyā parihāramanekadhā

Meditating upon Sri Krishna as abiding within the lotus of his own heart, beholding him with the eye of meditation, he offered praise with devotion, and, in many ways, sought pardon for his error.

Verse 107 (devibhagavatam.9.13.107)

tataḥ svacakṣurunmīlya punaśca tadanujñayā | dadarśa kṛṣṇamekaṁ ca rādhāvakṣaḥsthalasthitam

Then, opening his own eyes once more, by his very leave, he saw Krishna as one alone, resting upon Radha's own breast.

Verse 108 (devibhagavatam.9.13.108)

svapārṣadaiḥ parivṛtaṁ gopīmaṇḍalamaṇḍitam | punaḥ praṇemustaṁ dṛṣṭvā tuṣṭuvuḥ parameśvaram

surrounded by his own attendants, adorned by the circle of gopis, beholding him thus, all bowed once more and praised that Supreme Lord.

Verse 109 (devibhagavatam.9.13.109)

tadabhiprāyamājñāya tānuvāca rameśvaraḥ | sarvātmā sa ca sarvajñaḥ sarveśaḥ sarvabhāvanaḥ

Understanding their intent, that Lord of Rama, the Self of all, all-knowing, lord of all, the perceiver of every thought, said to them —

Verse 110 (devibhagavatam.9.13.110)

śrībhagavānuvāca | āgaccha kuśalaṁ brahmannāgaccha kamalāpate | ihāgaccha mahādeva śaśvatkuśalamastu vaḥ

The Blessed Lord said: Come, O Brahma, may all be well with you; come, O consort of Lakshmi; come here, O Mahadeva; may lasting welfare be upon you all.

Verse 111 (devibhagavatam.9.13.111)

āgatā hi mahābhāgā gaṅgānayanakāraṇāt | gaṅgā ca caraṇāmbhoje bhayena śaraṇaṁ gatā

You have all come here because Ganga must be led away; and Ganga, out of fear, has taken refuge at my own lotus feet.

Verse 112 (devibhagavatam.9.13.112)

rādhemāṁ pātumicchantī dṛṣṭvā matsannidhānataḥ | dāsyāmīmāṁ ca bhavatāṁ yūyaṁ kuruta nirbhayām

Seeing that Radha wished to drink her down, I have taken her here to my own side; now I give her to you — make her free from fear.

Verse 113 (devibhagavatam.9.13.113)

śrīkṛṣṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā sasmitaḥ kamalodbhavaḥ | tuṣṭāva rādhāmārādhyāṁ śrīkṛṣṇaparipūjitām

Hearing Sri Krishna's words, lotus-born Brahma, smiling, praised Radha, the object of worship, revered even by Sri Krishna himself.

Verse 114 (devibhagavatam.9.13.114)

vaktraiścaturbhiḥ saṁstūya bhaktinamrātmakandharaḥ | dhātā caturṇāṁ vedānāmuvāca caturānanaḥ

bowing his head low in devotion, praising her with all four of his faces, Brahma, four-faced, ordainer of the four Vedas, said —

Verse 115 (devibhagavatam.9.13.115)

caturānana uvāca | gaṅgā tvadaṅgasambhūtā prabhośca rāsamaṇḍale | yuvayordravarūpā sā mugdhayoḥ śaṅkarasvanāt

The four-faced one said: Ganga is born from your own body and from the Lord's body, within the rasa circle; she is the liquid form of you both, born at the moment of your entrancement, through Shankara's own music.

Verse 116 (devibhagavatam.9.13.116)

kṛṣṇāṁśā ca tvadaṁśā ca tvatkanyāsadṛśī priyā | tvanmantragrahaṇaṁ kṛtvā karotu tava pūjanam

She is a portion of Krishna, and a portion of you too, dear as your own daughter; let her receive your mantra, and let her perform your worship.

Verse 117 (devibhagavatam.9.13.117)

bhaviṣyati patistasyā vaikuṇṭheśaścaturbhujaḥ | bhūsthāyāḥ kalayā tasyāḥ patirlavaṇavāridhiḥ

Her husband shall be the four-armed Lord of Vaikuntha; and, in her portion upon the earth, the husband of that portion shall be the salt ocean.

Verse 118 (devibhagavatam.9.13.118)

golokasthā ca yā gaṅgā sarvatrasthā tathāmbike | tadambikā tvaṁ deveśī sarvadā sā tvadātmajā

O Mother, that Ganga who dwells in Goloka and pervades everywhere — O sovereign goddess, you yourself are her mother, and she is forever your own daughter.

Verse 119 (devibhagavatam.9.13.119)

brahmaṇo vacanaṁ śrutvā svīcakāra ca sasmitā | vahirbabhūva sā kṛṣṇapādāṅguṣṭhanakhāgrataḥ

Hearing Brahma's words, Radha, smiling, accepted them; and Ganga then emerged, appearing from the very tip of the nail on Krishna's own toe.

Verse 120 (devibhagavatam.9.13.120)

tatraiva satkṛtā śāntā tasthau teṣāṁ ca madhyataḥ | uvāsa toyādutthāya tadadhiṣṭhātṛdevatā

Honored right there, at peace, she stood among them; rising from the water, that presiding deity took her seat with them.

Verse 121 (devibhagavatam.9.13.121)

tattoyaṁ brahmaṇā kiñcitsthāpitaṁ ca kamaṇḍalau | kiñciddadhāra śirasi candrārdhakṛtaśekharaḥ

Some of that water Brahma placed within his own water-pot, and some of it Shiva, whose crest bears the crescent moon, bore upon his own head.

Verse 122 (devibhagavatam.9.13.122)

gaṅgāyai rādhikāmantraṁ pradadau kamalodbhavaḥ | tatstotraṁ kavacaṁ pūjāṁ vidhānaṁ dhyānameva ca

Lotus-born Brahma bestowed upon Ganga the mantra of Radhika, and also her hymn, her protective armor, the rite of her worship, and her meditation.

Verse 123 (devibhagavatam.9.13.123)

sarvaṁ tatsāmavedoktaṁ puraścaryākramaṁ tathā | gaṅgā tāmeva sampūjya vaikuṇṭhaṁ prayayau saha

All this is declared in the Samaveda, and likewise the order of the preliminary rite; and Ganga, having worshipped Radhika herself, went together with the others to Vaikuntha.

Verse 124 (devibhagavatam.9.13.124)

lakṣmīḥ sarasvatī gaṅgā tulasī viśvapāvanī | etā nārāyaṇasyaiva catasro yoṣito mune

Lakshmi, Sarasvati, Ganga, and Tulasi, purifier of the universe — O sage, these four are the wives of Narayana himself.

Verse 125 (devibhagavatam.9.13.125)

atha taṁ sasmitaḥ kṛṣṇo brahmāṇaṁ samuvāca saḥ | sarvakālasya vṛttāntaṁ durbodhamavipaścitam

Then Krishna, smiling, told Brahma the account of all time, an account difficult for the unwise to comprehend.

Verse 126 (devibhagavatam.9.13.126)

śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca | gṛhāṇa gaṅgāṁ he brahman he viṣṇo he maheśvara | śṛṇu kālasya vṛttāntaṁ matto brahmanniśāmaya

Sri Krishna said: O Brahma, O Vishnu, O Maheshvara, take Ganga with you; O Brahma, hear from me the account of time — listen closely.

Verse 127 (devibhagavatam.9.13.127)

yūyaṁ ca ye'nye devāśca munayo manavastathā | siddhā yaśasvinaścaiva ye ye'traiva samāgatāḥ

You yourselves, and whatever other gods, sages, Manus, adepts, and men of renown have gathered here together —

Verse 128 (devibhagavatam.9.13.128)

ete jīvanti goloke kālacakravivarjite | jalāplute sarvaviśvaṁ jātaṁ kalpakṣayo'dhunā

all of them live here in Goloka, exempt from the wheel of time; now the entire universe has become submerged in water — this is the dissolution of a cosmic cycle.

Verse 129 (devibhagavatam.9.13.129)

brahmādyā ye'nyaviśvasthāste vilīnādhunā mayi | vaikuṇṭhaṁ ca vinā sarvaṁ jalamagnaṁ ca padmaja

Whatever Brahmas and the rest existed in other universes have now dissolved into me; O lotus-born one, everything except Vaikuntha has become submerged in water.

Verse 130 (devibhagavatam.9.13.130)

gatvā sṛṣṭiṁ kuru punarbrahmalokādikaṁ bhavam | svaṁ brahmāṇḍaṁ viracaya paścād gaṅgā prayāsyati

Go and create once more Brahmaloka and the rest, and fashion your own cosmic egg; and after that, Ganga shall go there too.

Verse 131 (devibhagavatam.9.13.131)

evamanyeṣu viśveṣu sṛṣṭau brahmādikaṁ punaḥ | karomyahaṁ punaḥ sṛṣṭiṁ gaccha śīghraṁ suraiḥ saha

In the same way, I shall create Brahma and the rest anew in the other universes too, and shall bring forth creation once again; go swiftly, together with the other gods.

Verse 132 (devibhagavatam.9.13.132)

gato bahutaraḥ kālo yuṣmākaṁ ca caturmukhāḥ | gatāḥ katividhāste ca bhaviṣyanti ca vedhasaḥ

For you, a very great span of time has passed; how many four-faced Brahmas have already come and gone, and how many more shall yet come to be.

Verse 133 (devibhagavatam.9.13.133)

ityuktvā rādhikānātho jagāmāntaḥpure mune | devā gatvā punaḥ sṛṣṭiṁ cakrureva prayatnataḥ

O sage, having said this, the Lord of Radhika withdrew into his own inner chambers; and the gods, departing, once again set about the work of creation with diligence.

Verse 134 (devibhagavatam.9.13.134)

goloke ca sthitā gaṅgā vaikuṇṭhe śivalokake | brahmaloke sthitānyatra yatra yatra puraḥ sthitā

Ganga now remained established in Goloka, in Vaikuntha, in Shivaloka, and in Brahmaloka — in each of the places where she had formerly been present —

Verse 135 (devibhagavatam.9.13.135)

tatraiva sā gatā gaṅgā cājñayā paramātmanaḥ | nirgatā viṣṇupādābjāttena viṣṇupadī smṛtā

by the command of the Supreme Self, Ganga went once more to each of those very places; and because she issued forth from Vishnu's own lotus foot, she is remembered as "Vishnupadi."

Verse 136 (devibhagavatam.9.13.136)

ityevaṁ kathitaṁ brahman gaṅgopākhyānamuttamam | sukhadaṁ mokṣadaṁ sāraṁ kiṁ bhūyaḥ śrotumicchasi

O brahmin, thus has this excellent story of Ganga been told, giver of happiness, giver of liberation, and of the very essence; what more do you now wish to hear?
