The Union of Tulasi with Shankhachuda, Continued
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.9.19.1)
nārada uvāca | vicitramidamākhyānaṁ bhavatā samudāhṛtam | śrutena yena me tṛptirna kadāpi hi jāyate
Narada said: This wondrous tale has been told by you; hearing it, I never once feel satisfied.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.9.19.2)
tataḥ paraṁ tu yajjātaṁ tattvaṁ vada mahāmate | śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | ityevamāśiṣaṁ dattvā svālayaṁ ca yayau vidhiḥ
Tell me truly what happened after that, O wise one. Sri Narayana said: Having given this blessing, Brahma went to his own abode.
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.9.19.3)
gāndharveṇa vivāhena jagṛhe tāṁ ca dānavaḥ | svarge dundubhivādyaṁ ca puṣpavṛṣṭirbabhūva ha
By the Gandharva rite of marriage, the Danava took her; in heaven kettledrums sounded and a shower of flowers fell.
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.9.19.4)
sa reme rāmayā sārdhaṁ vāsagehe manorame | mūrcchāṁ sā prāpa tulasī navasaṅgamasaṅgatā
He sported with his beloved in the delightful bridal chamber; Tulasi, caught up in that fresh union, fell into a swoon.
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.9.19.5)
nimagnā nirjale sādhvī sambhogasukhasāgare | catuḥṣaṣṭikalāmānaṁ catuḥṣaṣṭividhaṁ sukham
That virtuous woman was immersed, as though in a waterless sea, in the ocean of the joy of union — the sixty-four arts, the sixty-four kinds of delight —
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.9.19.6)
kāmaśāstre yanniruktaṁ rasikānāṁ yathepsitam | aṅgapratyaṅgasaṁśleṣapūrvakaṁ strīmanoharam
— as declared in the Kamashastra, whatever is desired by connoisseurs, involving the embrace of limb with limb, enchanting to women —
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.9.19.7)
tatsarvaṁ rasaśṛṅgāraṁ cakāra rasikeśvaraḥ | atīva ramyadeśe ca sarvajantuvivarjite
— all that delightful love-play the lord of delight performed, in a most charming spot, empty of every other creature —
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.9.19.8)
puṣpacandanatalpe ca puṣpacandanavāyunā | puṣpodyāne nadītīre puṣpacandanacarcite
— on a bed of flowers and sandal, in a breeze scented with flowers and sandal, in a flower garden on a riverbank, anointed with flowers and sandal —
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.9.19.9)
gahītvā rasiko rāse puṣpacandanacarcitām | bhūṣito bhūṣaṇenaiva ratnabhūṣaṇabhūṣitām
— that connoisseur, taking her, anointed with flowers and sandal, into the rasa-play, adorned with ornaments himself and adorning her with jeweled ones —
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.9.19.10)
surate viratirnāsti tayoḥ surativijñayoḥ | jahāra mānasaṁ bharturlolayā līlayā satī
— there was no cessation of their lovemaking, those two skilled in the art of love; and that virtuous woman stole her husband's mind with her playful, restless sport.
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.9.19.11)
cetanāṁ rasikāyāśca jahāra rasabhāvavit | vakṣasaścandanaṁ rājñastilakaṁ vijahāra sā
He, knowing well the moods of delight, stole away his beloved's very consciousness in turn; and she took for herself the sandal-paste from the king's chest, and his forehead-mark.
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.9.19.12)
sa ca jahāra tasyāśca sindūraṁ bindupatrakam | tadvakṣasyuroje ca nakharekhāṁ dadau mudā
And he took from her the sindura and the decorative dot-mark; and joyfully left the marks of his nails upon her breast.
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.9.19.13)
sā dadau tadvāmapārśve karabhūṣaṇalakṣaṇam | rājā tadoṣṭhapuṭake dadau radanadaṁśanam
She left the mark of her hand-ornament on his left side; and the king left the mark of his teeth on her lips.
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.9.19.14)
tadgaṇḍayugale sā ca pradadau taccaturguṇam | āliṅganaṁ cumbanaṁ ca jaṅghādimardanaṁ tathā
On his two cheeks she left that mark fourfold; and so there was embracing and kissing, and the caressing of thighs and other limbs.
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.9.19.15)
evaṁ parasparaṁ krīḍāṁ cakratustau vijānatau | surate virate tau ca samutthāya parasparam
Thus, both well-versed in the art, they sported with one another; and when the lovemaking had ceased, the two of them rose up together —
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.9.19.16)
suveṣaṁ cakratustatra yadyanmanasi vāñchitam | candanaiḥ kuṅkumāraktaiḥ sā tasya tilakaṁ dadau
— and adorned themselves there, each as their heart desired; with sandal reddened by saffron, she applied the tilaka mark to his brow —
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.9.19.17)
sarvāṅge sundare ramye cakāra cānulepanam | suvāsaṁ caiva tāmbūlaṁ vahniśuddhe ca vāsasī

pārijātasya kusumaṁ jarārogaharaṁ param | amūlyaratnanirmāṇamaṅgulīyakamuttamam

nanāma parayā bhaktyā svāminaṁ guṇaśālinam | sasmitā tanmukhāmbhojaṁ locanābhyāṁ punaḥ punaḥ
— she bowed with the utmost devotion to her virtuous lord; and smiling, gazed again and again with her eyes upon his lotus-face —
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.9.19.21)
nimeṣarahitābhyāṁ cāpyapaśyatkāmasundaram | sa ca tāṁ ca samākṛṣya cakāra vakṣasi priyām
— gazing without blinking at that husband, beautiful as Kama; and he too, drawing her close, held his beloved to his chest.
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.9.19.22)
sasmitaṁ vāsasācchannaṁ dadarśa mukhapaṅkajam | cucumba kaṭhine gaṇḍe bimboṣṭhau punareva ca
He saw her smiling lotus-face, half hidden by her garment; and kissed again her firm cheeks and her bimba-red lips.
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.9.19.23)

Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.9.19.61)
vidyādharīsamūhānāṁ nṛtyajālairvirājitām | sahasrayojanāyāmāṁ paripūrṇāṁ ca kiṅkaraiḥ
— radiant with the dance-troupes of hosts of Vidyadhari maidens, a thousand yojanas in extent, and filled everywhere with attendants.
Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.9.19.62)
dadarśa śrīhariṁ brahmā śaṅkaraśca suraiḥ saha | vasantaṁ tanmadhyadeśe yathenduṁ tārakāvṛtam
There Brahma and Shankara, together with the gods, saw Sri Hari seated in the midst of it, like the moon surrounded by stars.
Verse 63 (devibhagavatam.9.19.63)
amūlyaratnanirmāṇacitrasiṁhāsane sthitam | kirīṭinaṁ kuṇḍalinaṁ vanamālāvibhūṣitam
— seated on a wondrous throne fashioned of priceless gems, crowned, wearing earrings, adorned with a forest-flower garland —
Verse 64 (devibhagavatam.9.19.64)
candanokṣitasarvāṅgaṁ bibhrataṁ kelipaṅkajam | purato nṛtyagītaṁ ca paśyantaṁ sasmitaṁ mudā
— his whole body anointed with sandal, holding a lotus for play, watching with delight, smiling, the dance and song before him —
Verse 65 (devibhagavatam.9.19.65)
śāntaṁ sarasvatīkāntaṁ lakṣmīdhṛtapadāmbujam | lakṣmyā pradattaṁ tāmbūlaṁ bhuktavantaṁ suvāsitam
— tranquil, beloved of Sarasvati, his lotus feet held by Lakshmi, partaking of fragrant betel offered by Lakshmi's own hand —
Verse 66 (devibhagavatam.9.19.66)
gaṅgayā parayā bhaktyā sevitaṁ śvetacāmaraiḥ | sarvaiśca stūyamānaṁ ca bhaktinamrātmakandharaiḥ
— served by Ganga with the utmost devotion using a white chowrie, and praised by everyone, their necks bowed low in devotion.
Verse 67 (devibhagavatam.9.19.67)
evaṁ viśiṣṭaṁ taṁ dṛṣṭvā paripūrṇatamaṁ prabhum | brahmādayaḥ surāḥ sarve praṇamya tuṣṭuvustadā
Seeing him thus, so exalted, the most complete Lord, Brahma and all the other gods bowed and began to praise him.
Verse 68 (devibhagavatam.9.19.68)
pulakāñcitasarvāṅgāḥ sāśrunetrāśca gadgadāḥ | bhaktāśca parayā bhaktyā bhītā namrātmakandharāḥ
Their whole bodies thrilled with horripilation, their eyes filled with tears, their voices choked; devoted with the utmost devotion, fearful, their necks bowed low —
Verse 69 (devibhagavatam.9.19.69)
kṛtāñjalipuṭo bhūtvā vidhātā jagatāmapi | vṛttāntaṁ kathayāmāsa vinayena hareḥ puraḥ
— with folded hands, Brahma, the Ordainer of the worlds, told the whole matter with humility before Hari.
Verse 70 (devibhagavatam.9.19.70)
haristadvacanaṁ śrutvā sarvajñaḥ sarvabhāvavit | prahasyovāca brahmāṇaṁ rahasyaṁ ca manoharam
Hari, hearing those words, all-knowing, the knower of every heart's feeling, laughed and told Brahma an enchanting secret.
Verse 71 (devibhagavatam.9.19.71)
śrībhagavānuvāca | śaṅkhacūḍasya vṛttāntaṁ sarvaṁ jānāmi padmaja | madbhaktasya ca gopasya mahātejasvinaḥ purā
Sri Bhagavan said: "O Lotus-born, I know the whole account of Shankhachuda — of my own devotee, that gopa of great splendor, in ancient times.
Verse 72 (devibhagavatam.9.19.72)
śṛṇu tatsarvavṛttāntamitihāsaṁ purātanam | golokasyaiva caritaṁ pāpaghnaṁ puṇyakārakam
Hear that whole account, this ancient history, itself the very story of Goloka, the destroyer of sin and bringer of merit.
Verse 73 (devibhagavatam.9.19.73)
sudāmā nāma gopaśca pārṣadapravaro mama | sa prāpa dānavīṁ yoniṁ rādhāśāpātsudāruṇāt
There was a cowherd named Sudama, foremost among my own attendants; he attained a Danava's birth through Radha's most dreadful curse.
Verse 74 (devibhagavatam.9.19.74)
tatraikadāhamagamaṁ svālayādrāsamaṇḍalam | virajāmapi nītvā ca mama prāṇādhikā parā
One day I went from my own abode to the circle of the Rasa, taking with me Viraja, who is dearer to me than my own life —
Verse 75 (devibhagavatam.9.19.75)
sā māṁ virajayā sārdhaṁ vijñāya kiṅkarīmukhāt | paścātkruddhā sājagāma na dadarśa ca tatra mām
— and she, learning from a maidservant's lips that I was there with Viraja, came afterward in anger, but did not find me there —
Verse 76 (devibhagavatam.9.19.76)
virajāṁ ca nadīrūpāṁ māṁ jñātvā ca tirohitam | punarjagāma sā dṛṣṭvā svālayaṁ sakhibhiḥ saha
— for Viraja had turned into a river, and I had vanished from sight; seeing this, she went back with her companions to her own abode.
Verse 77 (devibhagavatam.9.19.77)
māṁ dṛṣṭvā mandire devī sudāmnā sahitaṁ purā | bhṛśaṁ sā bhartsayāmāsa maunībhūtaṁ ca susthiram
That goddess had earlier seen me in my chamber together with Sudama; and she reviled me harshly, though I remained silent and unmoved throughout.
Verse 78 (devibhagavatam.9.19.78)
tacchrutvāsahamānaśca sudāmā tāṁ cukopa ha | sa ca tāṁ bhartsayāmāsa kopena mama sanidhau
Hearing this, Sudama, unable to bear it, grew angry at her; and he too, in anger, reviled her in my very presence.
Verse 79 (devibhagavatam.9.19.79)
tacchrutvā kopayuktā sā raktapaṅkajalocanā | bahiṣkartuṁ cakārājñāṁ santrastaṁ mama saṁsadi
Hearing that, she, her lotus-eyes red with fury, gave the order to have him, terrified as he was, thrown out of my assembly.
Verse 80 (devibhagavatam.9.19.80)
sakhīlakṣaṁ samuttasthau durvāraṁ tejasolbaṇam | bahiścakāra taṁ tūrṇaṁ jalpantaṁ ca punaḥ punaḥ
A hundred thousand of her companions rose up at once, irresistible, blazing with fury; and they swiftly cast him out, even as he pleaded again and again.
Verse 81 (devibhagavatam.9.19.81)
sā ca tattāḍanaṁ tāsāṁ śrutvā ruṣṭā śaśāpa ha | yāhi re dānavīṁ yonimityevaṁ dāruṇaṁ vacaḥ
Hearing of their beating him, she, enraged, cursed him: "Go — take birth in a Danava womb!" — such was her dreadful word.
Verse 82 (devibhagavatam.9.19.82)
taṁ gacchantaṁ śapantaṁ ca rudantaṁ māṁ praṇamya ca | vārayāmāsa tuṣṭā sā rudatī kṛpayā punaḥ
As he went, cursed and weeping, he bowed to me; and she, moved by his plight, weeping herself, tried again out of compassion to hold him back.
Verse 83 (devibhagavatam.9.19.83)
he vatsa tiṣṭha mā gaccha kva yāsīti punaḥ punaḥ | samuccārya ca tatpaścājjagāma sā ca viklavam
"O child, stay, do not go — where are you going?" — saying this again and again; and after that she too went away, distraught.
Verse 84 (devibhagavatam.9.19.84)
gopyaśca ruruduḥ sarvā gopāścāpi suduḥkhitāḥ | te sarve rādhikā cāpi tatpaścād bodhitā mayā
All the gopis wept, and the gopas too were greatly grieved; and I consoled all of them, and Radhika too, afterward.
Verse 85 (devibhagavatam.9.19.85)
āyāsyati kṣaṇārdhena kṛtvā śāpasya pālanam | sudāmaṁstvamihāgacchetyuktvā sā ca nivāritā
I told them: "He will return within half a moment, once the curse has run its course." Saying "Sudama, you shall come back here," she was thus consoled.
Verse 86 (devibhagavatam.9.19.86)
golokasya kṣaṇārdhena caikaṁ manvantaraṁ bhavet | pṛthivyāṁ jagatāṁ dhātarityeva vacanaṁ dhruvam
For half a moment in Goloka equals one whole Manvantara on earth, O ordainer of the worlds — this is a fixed and certain rule.
Verse 87 (devibhagavatam.9.19.87)
ityevaṁ śaṅkhacūḍaśca punastatraiva yāsyati | mahābaliṣṭho yogeśaḥ sarvamāyāviśāradaḥ
Thus that mighty lord of yoga, Shankhachuda, skilled in every illusion, shall in time return to that very place.
Verse 88 (devibhagavatam.9.19.88)
mama śūlaṁ gṛhītvā ca śīghraṁ gacchata bhāratam | śivaḥ karotu saṁhāraṁ mama śūlena rakṣasaḥ
Take up my trident and go quickly to Bharata; let Shiva slay that demon with this very trident of mine.
Verse 89 (devibhagavatam.9.19.89)
mamaiva kavacaṁ kaṇṭhe sarvamaṅgalakārakam | bibharti dānavaḥ śaśvatsaṁsāre vijayī tataḥ
That Danava wears upon his neck my own all-auspicious armor, and it is for that reason he remains ever victorious in this world —
Verse 90 (devibhagavatam.9.19.90)
tasmin brahman sthite caiva na ko'pi hiṁsituṁ kṣamaḥ | tadyācanāṁ kariṣyāmi viprarūpo'hameva ca
— as long as it remains with him, O Brahma, no one can slay him; therefore I myself, in the form of a brahmin, shall go and beg it from him.
Verse 91 (devibhagavatam.9.19.91)
satītvahānistatpatnyā yatra kāle bhaviṣyati | tatraiva kāle tanmṛtyuriti datto varastvayā
The very moment his wife's chastity is broken, that very moment his death shall come — such is the boon you yourself once granted him.
Verse 92 (devibhagavatam.9.19.92)
tatpatnyāścodare vīryamarpayiṣyāmi niścitam | tatkṣaṇe caiva tanmṛtyurbhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ
I shall myself, without fail, place my own seed within his wife's womb; and at that very instant his death shall occur, without doubt.
Verse 93 (devibhagavatam.9.19.93)
paścātsā dehamutsajya bhaviṣyati mama priyā | ityuktvā jagatāṁ nātho dadau śūlaṁ harāya ca
"Afterward, giving up that body, she shall become my own beloved." Having said this, the Lord of the worlds gave the trident to Hara.
Verse 94 (devibhagavatam.9.19.94)
śūlaṁ dattvā yayau śīghraṁ harirabhyantare mudā | bhārataṁ ca yayurdevā brahyarudrapurogamāḥ
Having given the trident, Hari, joyful, went swiftly into his inner chamber; and the gods, led by Brahma and Rudra, set out for Bharata.
