śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | śrīkṛṣṇaṁ manasā dhyātvā rakṣaḥ kṛṣṇaparāyaṇaḥ | brāhme muhūrte cotthāya puṣpatalpānmanoharāt
Sri Narayana said: Meditating in his mind upon Sri Krishna, that demon, wholly devoted to Krishna, rose at the Brahma-muhurta from his enchanting bed of flowers.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.9.21.2)

Leaving off his night garments, bathing in auspicious water, putting on washed clothes, and applying a bright tilaka —
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.9.21.3)

cakārāhnikamāvaśyamabhīṣṭadevavandanam | dadhyājyamadhulājāṁśca dadarśa vastu maṅgalam

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.9.21.4)
ratnaśreṣṭhaṁ maṇiśreṣṭhaṁ vastraśreṣṭhaṁ ca kāñcanam | brāhmaṇebhyo dadau bhaktyā yathā nityaṁ ca nārada
— and, as he did every day, O Narada, he gave with devotion the finest gems, the finest jewels, the finest cloth, and gold to the brahmins.
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.9.21.5)
amūlyaratnaṁ yatkiñcinmuktāmāṇikyahīrakam | dadau viprāya gurave yātrāmaṅgalahetave
Whatever priceless gems, pearls, rubies, and diamonds he had, he gave to his brahmin preceptor, for the sake of an auspicious departure.
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.9.21.6)
gajaratnamaśvaratnaṁ dhanaratnaṁ manoharam | dadau sarvaṁ daridrāya viprāya maṅgalāya ca
An elephant among elephants, a horse among horses, and enchanting wealth of every kind — all this he gave to a poor brahmin, for the sake of auspiciousness.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.9.21.7)
bhāṇḍārāṇāṁ sahasrāṇi nagarāṇāṁ dvilakṣakam | grāmāṇāṁ śatakoṭiṁ ca brāhmaṇāya dadau mudā
Thousands of treasuries, two hundred thousand cities, and a hundred crores of villages he joyfully gave away to a brahmin as well.
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.9.21.8)
putraṁ kṛtvā tu rājendraṁ sarveṣu dānaveṣu ca | putraṁ samarpya bhāryāṁ tāṁ rājyaṁ ca sarvasampadam
Having made his son king over all the Danavas, entrusting to him his own wife, his kingdom, and all his wealth —
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.9.21.9)
prajānucarasaṅghaṁ ca bhāṇḍāraṁ vāhanādikam | svayaṁ sannāhayuktaśca dhanuṣpāṇirbabhūva ha
— entrusting also his subjects, his retinue, his treasury, his mounts and the rest, he himself, now armored, took bow in hand.
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.9.21.10)
bhṛtyadvārā krameṇaiva cakāra sainyasañcayam | aśvānāṁ ca trilakṣeṇa lakṣeṇa varahastinām
Through his servants he duly gathered his army — three hundred thousand horses, a hundred thousand fine elephants —
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.9.21.11)
rathānāmayutenaiva dhānuṣkāṇāṁ trikoṭibhiḥ | trikoṭibhirvarmiṇāṁ ca śūlināṁ ca trikoṭibhiḥ
— ten thousand chariots, three crores of archers, three crores of armored soldiers, and three crores of spearmen.
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.9.21.12)
kṛtā senāparimitā dānavendreṇa nārada | tasyāṁ senāpatiścaiva yuddhaśāstraviśāradaḥ
Thus, O Narada, the lord of the Danavas assembled his mighty army; and its commander, skilled in the science of war —

mahārathaḥ sa vijñeyo rathināṁ pravaro raṇe | trilakṣākṣauhiṇīsenāpatiṁ kṛtvā narādhipaḥ
— was known as a great warrior, foremost of charioteers in battle; and the king, having made him commander of an army of three hundred thousand akshauhinis —
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.9.21.14)
triṁśadakṣauhiṇībādhaṁ bhāṇḍaughaṁ ca cakāra ha | bahirbabhūva śivirānmanasā śrīhariṁ smaran
— arranged provisions besides for thirty more akshauhinis; and, remembering Sri Hari in his mind, came out from his camp.
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.9.21.15)
ratnendrasāranirmāṇavimānamāruroha saḥ | guruvargānpuraskṛtya prayayau śaṅkarāntikam
He mounted a chariot fashioned of the finest gems; and, placing his elders and preceptors before him, set out for Shankara's presence.
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.9.21.16)
puṣpabhadrānadītīre yatrākṣayavaṭaḥ śubhaḥ | siddhāśramaṁ ca siddhānāṁ siddhikṣetraṁ ca nārada
— to the bank of the river Pushpabhadra, where stood the auspicious, imperishable banyan, the hermitage of the Siddhas, that field of spiritual attainment, O Narada —
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.9.21.17)
kapilasya tapaḥsthānaṁ puṇyakṣetre ca bhārate | paścimodadhipūrve ca malayasya ca paścime
— the place of the sage Kapila's austerity, in the sacred land of Bharata, east of the western ocean and west of the Malaya mountains —
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.9.21.18)
śrīśailottarabhāge ca gandhamādanadakṣiṇe | pañcayojanavistīrṇā dairghye śataguṇā tathā
— north of Shrishaila and south of Gandhamadana — five yojanas wide, and a hundred times that in length —
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.9.21.19)
śuddhasphaṭikasaṅkāśā bhārate ca supuṇyadā | śāśvatī jalapūrṇā ca puṣpabhadrā nadī śubhā
— clear as pure crystal, most meritorious in Bharata, eternal, ever full of water, that auspicious river Pushpabhadra —
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.9.21.20)
lavaṇābdhipriyā bhāryā śaśvatsaubhāgyasaṁyutā | śarāvatīmiśritā ca nirgatā sā himālayāt
— the beloved bride of the salt ocean, ever blessed with good fortune, joined with the Sharavati, issuing forth from the Himalayas —
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.9.21.21)
gomatīṁ vāmataḥ kṛtvā praviṣṭā paścimodadhau | tatra gatvā śaṅkhacūḍo dadarśa candraśekharam
— keeping the Gomati on her left, she flows into the western ocean. Going there, Shankhachuda beheld Chandrashekhara —
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.9.21.22)
vaṭamūle samāsīnaṁ sūryakoṭisamaprabham | kṛtvā yogāsanaṁ dṛṣṭvā mudrāyuktaṁ ca sasmitam
— seated beneath the banyan, radiant as a crore of suns, seated in yogic posture, his hand in a mudra, smiling —
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.9.21.23)
śuddhasphaṭikasaṅkāśaṁ jvalantaṁ brahmatejasā | triśalapaṭṭiśadharaṁ vyāghracarmāmbaraṁ varam
— clear as pure crystal, blazing with the splendor of Brahman, bearing trident and battle-axe, clad in a fine tiger-skin —
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.9.21.24)
bhaktamṛtyuharaṁ śāntaṁ gaurīkāntaṁ manoharam | tapasāṁ phaladātāraṁ dātāraṁ sarvasampadām
— the remover of death for his devotees, tranquil, beloved of Gauri, enchanting; the giver of the fruit of austerity, the giver of all wealth —
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.9.21.25)
āśutoṣaṁ prasannāsyaṁ bhaktānugrahakātaram | viśvanāthaṁ viśvabījaṁ viśvarūpaṁ ca viśvajam
— quickly pleased, of serene countenance, eager to bless his devotees; the Lord of the universe, the seed of the universe, of the very form of the universe, born of the universe —
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.9.21.26)
viśvambharaṁ viśvavaraṁ viśvasaṁhārakārakam | kāraṇaṁ kāraṇānāṁ ca narakārṇavatāraṇam
— the sustainer of the universe, the boon-giver of the universe, the destroyer of the universe; the cause of all causes, the deliverer across the ocean of hell —
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.9.21.27)
jñānapradaṁ jñānabījaṁ jñānānandaṁ sanātanam | avaruhya vimānācca taṁ dṛṣṭvā dānaveśvaraḥ
— the giver of knowledge, the seed of knowledge, the bliss of knowledge, the eternal one. Seeing him, the lord of the Danavas descended from his chariot —
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.9.21.28)
sarvaiḥ sārdhaṁ bhaktiyuktaḥ śirasā praṇanāma saḥ | vāmato bhadrakālīṁ ca skandaṁ ca tatpuraḥ sthitam
— and, together with everyone, filled with devotion, bowed his head to the ground; and he saw Bhadrakali to the left, and Skanda standing before him.
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.9.21.29)
āśiṣaṁ ca dadau tasmai kālī skandaśca śaṅkaraḥ | uttasthurāgataṁ dṛṣṭvā sarve nandīśvarādayaḥ
Kali, Skanda, and Shankara gave him their blessing; and, seeing him arrive, Nandishvara and all the others rose up.
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.9.21.30)
parasparaṁ ca bhāṣante cakrustatra ca sāmpratam | rājā kṛtvā ca sambhāṣāmuvāsa śivasannidhau
They spoke to one another there for a while; and the king, having exchanged greetings, sat down in Shiva's presence.
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.9.21.31)
prasannātmā mahādevo bhagavāṁstamuvāca ha | mahādeva uvāca | vidhātā jagatāṁ brahmā pitā dharmasya dharmavit
Mahadeva, his heart at ease, that Lord, spoke to him. Mahadeva said: "Brahma, the ordainer of the worlds, knower of dharma, is the father of Dharma —
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.9.21.32)
marīcistasya putraśca vaiṣṇavāścāpi dhārmikaḥ | kaśyapaścāpi tatputro dharmiṣṭhaśca prajāpatiḥ
— Marichi is his son, a Vaishnava and righteous man; and Kashyapa, his own son, is a most righteous Prajapati.
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.9.21.33)
dakṣaḥ prītyā dadau tasmai bhaktyā kanyāstrayodaśa | tāsvekā ca danuḥ sādhvī tatsaubhāgyavivardhitā
Daksha, out of love and devotion, gave him thirteen daughters; among them was the virtuous Danu, whose fortune was thereby increased.
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.9.21.34)
catvāriṁśaddanoḥ putrā dānavāstejasolbaṇāḥ | teṣveko vipracittiśca mahābalaparākramaḥ
Danu had forty sons, the Danavas, blazing with power; among them was Vipracitti, of great strength and valor.
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.9.21.35)
tatputro dhārmiko dambho viṣṇubhakto jitendriyaḥ | jajāpa paramaṁ mantraṁ puṣkare lakṣavatsaram
His son Dambha was righteous, a devotee of Vishnu, of conquered senses; he chanted the supreme mantra at Pushkara for a hundred thousand years.
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.9.21.36)
śukrācāryaṁ guruṁ kṛtvā kṛṣṇasya paramātmanaḥ | tadā tvāṁ tanayaṁ prāpa paraṁ kṛṣṇaparāyaṇam
Making Shukracharya his preceptor, and Krishna the Supreme Soul his chosen deity, he thereby obtained you as his son, supremely devoted to Krishna.
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.9.21.37)
purā tvaṁ pārṣado gopo gopeṣvapi sudhārmikaḥ | adhunā rādhikāśāpādbhārate dānaveśvaraḥ
Formerly you were an attendant, a cowherd, most righteous even among cowherds; now, by Radhika's curse, you have become the lord of the Danavas in Bharata.
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.9.21.38)
ābrahmastambaparyantaṁ tucchaṁ mene ca vaiṣṇavaḥ | sālokyasārṣṭisāyujyasāmīpyaṁ ca harerapi
From Brahma down to a blade of grass, a true Vaishnava counts all things trivial; and even Hari's own realm, glory, form, or nearness to him —
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.9.21.39)
dīyamānaṁ na gṛhṇanti vaiṣṇavāḥ sevanaṁ vinā | brahmatvamamaratvaṁ vā tucchaṁ mene ca vaiṣṇavaḥ
— even when offered, a true Vaishnav does not accept without the chance of continued service; the very state of Brahma, or immortality itself, a Vaishnava counts as trivial.
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.9.21.40)
indratvaṁ vā manutvaṁ vā na mene gaṇanāsu ca | kṛṣṇabhaktasya te kiṁ vā devānāṁ viṣaye bhrame
The status of Indra, or of Manu, he does not even count as worth reckoning; so for you, a devotee of Krishna, what confusion could there be in this matter of the gods?
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.9.21.41)
dehi rājyaṁ ca devānāṁ matprītiṁ rakṣa bhūmipa | sukhaṁ svarājye tvaṁ tiṣṭha devāstiṣṭhantu vai pade
Give back to the gods their kingdom, O king, and preserve my goodwill; remain happily in your own realm, and let the gods remain in their own station.
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.9.21.42)
alaṁ bhūtavirodhena sarve kaśyapavaṁśajāḥ | yāni kāni ca pāpāni brahmahatyādikāni ca
Enough of this enmity among beings — all are born of Kashyapa's own line. Whatever sins there be, even those beginning with the killing of a brahmin —
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.9.21.43)
jñātidrohasya pāpāni kalāṁ nārhanti ṣoḍaśīm | svasampadāṁ ca hāniṁ ca yadi rājendra manyase
— they do not equal even a sixteenth part of the sin of enmity toward one's own kinsmen. And if, O king of kings, you are troubled over the loss of your own wealth —
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.9.21.44)
sarvāvasthā ca samatāṁ keṣāṁ yāti ca sarvadā | brahmaṇaśca tirobhāvo laye prākṛtike sadā
— whose condition, in truth, ever remains the same? Even Brahma himself disappears at the time of the great cosmic dissolution —
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.9.21.45)
āvirbhāvaḥ punastasya prabhāvādīśvarecchayā | jñānavṛddhiśca tapasā smṛtilopaśca niścitam
— and his reappearance too comes again by the Ruler's own power and will; growth in knowledge comes by austerity, and the loss of memory too is certain.
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.9.21.46)
karoti sṛṣṭiṁ jñānena sraṣṭā so'pi krameṇa ca | paripūrṇatamo dharmaḥ satye satyāśraye sadā
By knowledge the Creator himself creates, in due order; and Dharma is most complete in the age of Satya, ever resting on truth —
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.9.21.47)
tribhāgaḥ so'pi tretāyāṁ dvibhāgo dvāpare smṛtaḥ | ekabhāgaḥ kalau pūrvaṁ tadaṁśaśca kameṇa ca
— three-quarters of it remains in the Treta, half in the Dvapara, one quarter at the start of Kali, and gradually a mere fragment of that —
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.9.21.48)
kalāmātraṁ kaleḥ śeṣe kuhvāṁ candrakalā yathā | yādṛk tejo ravergnīṣme na tādṛk śiśire punaḥ
— until, at the very end of Kali, only a sliver remains, like the moon's last thread on the night of the new moon. As is the sun's heat in summer, so it is not in winter —
Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.9.21.49)
dineṣu yādṛṅmadhyāhne sāyaṁ prātarna tatsamam | udayaṁ yāti kālena bālatāṁ ca krameṇa ca
— as the sun is at noon, so it is not in the evening or morning; by time it rises, and by degrees passes into its youth —
Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.9.21.50)
prakāṇḍatāṁ ca tatpaścātkāle'staṁ punareti saḥ | dine pracchannatāṁ yāti kālena durdine ghane
— then afterward into full strength, and in time sets once more; and even by day it is hidden by heavy cloud on an overcast day —
Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.9.21.51)
rāhugraste kampitaśca punareva prasannatām | paripūrṇatamaścandraḥ pūrṇimāyāṁ ca jāyate
— it trembles when seized by Rahu, and then grows serene once more. So too the moon becomes most fully complete on the day of the full moon —
Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.9.21.52)
tādṛśo na bhavennityaṁ kṣayaṁ yāti dine dine | punaśca puṣṭimāyāti paraṁ kuhvā dine dine
— yet it does not remain so forever; day by day it wanes, and then, up to the new moon, day by day grows to fullness once more.
Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.9.21.53)
sampadyuktaḥ śuklapakṣe kṛṣṇe mlānaśca yakṣmaṇā | rāhugraste dine mlāno durdine na virocate
Full of splendor in the bright fortnight, it grows dim in the dark fortnight as if wasted by disease; darkened when seized by Rahu, it does not shine on an overcast day either.
Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.9.21.54)
kāle candro bhavecchuklo bhraṣṭaśrīḥ kālabhedataḥ | bhaviṣyati baliścendro bhraṣṭaśrīḥ sutale'dhunā
In time the moon grows bright, and by time's turning it loses its splendor once again. So too shall Bali become Indra in his own time — he who now, bereft of fortune, dwells in Sutala.
Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.9.21.55)
kālena pṛthvī sasyāḍhyā sarvādhārā vasundharā | kāle jale nimagnā sā tirobhūtāmbuviplutā
By time the earth, the support of all, grows rich with crops; and by time she becomes submerged in water, vanished, engulfed by the flood.
Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.9.21.56)
kāle naśyanti viśvāni prabhavantyeva kālataḥ | carācarāśca kālena naśyanti prabhavanti ca
By time the worlds perish, and by time alone they arise; and by time all moving and unmoving beings perish, and by time they come into being.
Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.9.21.57)
īśvarasyaiva samatā brahmaṇaḥ paramātmanaḥ | ahaṁ mṛtyuñjayo yasmādasaṅkhyaṁ prākṛtaṁ layam
The Supreme Lord alone, the Supreme Brahman, remains ever the same. I am the conqueror of death, since I have witnessed countless dissolutions of the universe —
Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.9.21.58)
ādarśaṁ cāpi drakṣyāmi vāraṁ vāraṁ punaḥ punaḥ | sa ca prakṛtirūpaśca sa eva puruṣaḥ smṛtaḥ
— and shall witness them again and again, time after time. He is of the very nature of Prakriti, and is remembered as Purusha himself —
Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.9.21.59)
sa cātmā sa ca jīvaśca nānārūpadharaḥ paraḥ | karoti satataṁ yo hi tanāmaguṇakīrtanam
— he is the Self, and he is the individual soul too, the Supreme who bears manifold forms. Whoever ceaselessly sings the praise of his name and qualities —
Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.9.21.60)
kāle mṛtyuṁ sa jayati janmarogabhayaṁ jarām | sraṣṭā kṛto vidhistena pātā viṣṇuḥ kṛto bhavet
— he conquers death, and birth, disease, fear, and old age. By that same power Brahma was made the Creator, and Vishnu the Preserver —
Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.9.21.61)
ahaṁ kṛtaśca saṁhartā vayaṁ viṣayiṇaḥ kṛtāḥ | kālāgnirudraṁ saṁhāre niyojya viṣaye nṛpa
— and I was made the Destroyer; and we were all made subject to the play of the gunas. Having appointed Kalagni Rudra, O king, for the task of destruction —
Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.9.21.62)
ahaṁ karomi satataṁ tannāmaguṇakīrtanam | tena mṛtyuñjayo'haṁ ca jñānenānena nirbhayaḥ
— I myself ceaselessly sing the name and qualities of that same Supreme; and it is by this very knowledge that I am the conqueror of death, and fearless.
Verse 63 (devibhagavatam.9.21.63)
mṛtyurmṛtyubhayādyāti vainateyādivoragāḥ | ityuktvā sa ca sarveśaḥ sarvabhāvena tatparaḥ
"Death itself flees from fear of death, as serpents flee from the son of Vinata." Having said this, that Lord of all, wholly absorbed in this truth —
Verse 64 (devibhagavatam.9.21.64)
virarāma ca śambhuśca sabhāmadhye ca nārada | rājā tadvacanaṁ śrutvā praśaśaṁsa punaḥ punaḥ
— Shambhu fell silent there in the midst of the assembly, O Narada; and the king, hearing his words, praised them again and again.
Verse 65 (devibhagavatam.9.21.65)
uvāca madhuraṁ devaṁ paraṁ vinayapūrvakam | śaṅkhacūḍa uvāca | tvayā yatkathitaṁ deva nānyathā vacanaṁ smṛtam
He spoke sweetly to the supreme God, with the utmost humility. Shankhachuda said: "O God, what you have said cannot be taken as anything but true.
Verse 66 (devibhagavatam.9.21.66)
tathāpi kiñcidyathārthaṁ śrūyatāṁ mannivedanam | jñātidrohe mahatpāpaṁ tvayoktamadhunā ca yat
Yet hear, in due measure, my own submission as well. As for what you have just said, that enmity toward one's kin is a great sin —
Verse 67 (devibhagavatam.9.21.67)
gṛhītvā tasya sarvasvaṁ kutaḥ prasthāpito baliḥ | mayā samuddhṛtaṁ sarvamūrdhvamaiśvaryamīśvara
— then why was Bali, having had everything taken from him, sent down below? Whatever dominion I myself have taken from above, O Lord —
Verse 68 (devibhagavatam.9.21.68)
sutalācca samuddhartuṁ nālaṁ tatra gadādharaḥ | sabhrātṛko hiraṇyākṣaḥ kathaṁ devaiśca hiṁsitaḥ
— even Gadadhara himself is unable to lift him up from Sutala. And how was Hiranyaksha, together with his brother, slain by the gods?
Verse 69 (devibhagavatam.9.21.69)
śumbhādayaścāsurāśca kathaṁ devairnipātitāḥ | purā samudramathane pīyūṣaṁ bhakṣitaṁ suraiḥ
How were Shumbha and the other asuras cast down by the gods? Formerly, at the churning of the ocean, the nectar was drunk by the gods alone —
Verse 70 (devibhagavatam.9.21.70)
kleśabhājo vayaṁ tatra te sarve phalabhoginaḥ | krīḍābhāṇḍamidaṁ viśvaṁ prakṛteḥ paramātmanaḥ
— while it was we who shared in the toil, and they alone who enjoyed the fruit. This universe is but the plaything of Prakriti and the Supreme Soul —
Verse 71 (devibhagavatam.9.21.71)
yasmai yatra sa dadāti tasyaiśvaryaṁ bhavettadā | devadānavayorvādaḥ śaśvannaimittikaḥ sadā
— to whomever, wherever, they choose to grant it, that one's fortune comes to be there. This strife between gods and Danavas is ever an occasional, recurring thing —
Verse 72 (devibhagavatam.9.21.72)
parājayo jayasteṣāṁ kāle'smākaṁ krameṇa ca | tadāvayorvirodhe vā''gamanaṁ niṣkalaṁ param
— their defeat and their victory, and ours in turn, come and go with time. So even if there be enmity between us, your coming here now would be quite fruitless —
Verse 73 (devibhagavatam.9.21.73)
samasambandhino bandhorīśvarasya mahātmanaḥ | iyaṁ te mahatī lajjā yuddhe'smābhiḥ sahādhunā
— for you, O great Lord, are kin equally to both sides; and to fight against us now would bring you great shame.
Verse 74 (devibhagavatam.9.21.74)
jaye tato'dhikā kīrtirhāniścaiva parājaye | ityetadvacanaṁ śrutvā prahasya ca trilocanaḥ
"In victory there is no great glory to be gained, and in defeat, only loss." Hearing these words, the three-eyed Shiva laughed —
Verse 75 (devibhagavatam.9.21.75)
yathocitamuttaraṁ tamuvāca dānaveśvaram | mahādeva uvāca | yuṣmābhiḥ saha yuddhe me brahmavaṁśasamudbhavaiḥ
— and gave the lord of the Danavas a fitting reply. Mahadeva said: "In fighting with you, all born of Brahma's own line —
Verse 76 (devibhagavatam.9.21.76)
kā lajjā mahatī rājannakīrtirvā parājaye | yuddhamādau harereva madhunā kaiṭabhena ca
— what great shame is there, O king, or what disgrace in defeat? Hari himself first fought with Madhu and Kaitabha —
Verse 77 (devibhagavatam.9.21.77)
hiraṇyakaśipoścaiva saha tenātmanā nṛpa | hiraṇyākṣasya yuddhaṁ ca punastena gadābhṛtā
— and with Hiranyakashipu too, O king, in his own incarnate form; and that same mace-bearer fought again with Hiranyaksha.
Verse 78 (devibhagavatam.9.21.78)
tripuraiḥ saha yuddhaṁ ca mayāpi ca purā kṛtam | sarveśvaryāḥ sarvamātuḥ prakṛtyāśca babhūva ha
I too once fought with the demons of Tripura; and Prakriti herself, the mother and ruler of all —
Verse 79 (devibhagavatam.9.21.79)
saha śumbhādibhiḥ pūrvaṁ samaraḥ paramādbhutaḥ | pārṣadapravarastvaṁ ca kṛṣṇasya paramātmanaḥ
— once fought a most wondrous battle with Shumbha and the others. You are but a foremost attendant of Krishna, the Supreme Soul —
Verse 80 (devibhagavatam.9.21.80)
ye ye hatāśca daiteyā nahi ke'pi tvayā samāḥ | kā lajjā mahatī rājan mama yuddhe tvayā saha
— and of all the Daityas ever slain, not one is your equal. So what great shame, O king, could there be for me in fighting you?
Verse 81 (devibhagavatam.9.21.81)
surāṇāṁ śaraṇasyaiva preṣitaśca hareraho | dehi rājyaṁ ca devānāmiti me niścitaṁ vacaḥ
I have indeed been sent by Hari himself, the refuge of the gods; give back to the gods their kingdom — this is my final and settled word.
Verse 82 (devibhagavatam.9.21.82)
yuddhaṁ vā kuru matsārdhaṁ vāgvyaye kiṁ prayojanam | ityuktvā śaṅkarastatra virarāma ca nārada | uttasthau śaṅkhacūḍaśca hyamātyaiḥ saha satvaram
"Or else fight with me — what use is there in wasting more words?" Having said this, Shankara fell silent there, O Narada; and Shankhachuda at once rose up, together with his ministers.
