The Battle of Kali and Shankhachuda

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.9.22.1)

श्रीनारायण उवाच । शिवं प्रणम्य शिरसा दानवेन्द्रः प्रतापवान् । समारुरोह यानं च सहामात्यैः स सत्वरः

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | śivaṁ praṇamya śirasā dānavendraḥ pratāpavān | samāruroha yānaṁ ca sahāmātyaiḥ sa satvaraḥ

Sri Narayana said: Bowing his head to Shiva, the mighty lord of the Danavas swiftly mounted his chariot, together with his ministers.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.9.22.2)

शिवः स्वसैन्यं देवांश्च प्रेरयामास सत्वरम् । दानवेन्द्रः ससैन्यश्च युद्धारम्भे बभूव ह

śivaḥ svasainyaṁ devāṁśca prerayāmāsa satvaram | dānavendraḥ sasainyaśca yuddhārambhe babhūva ha

Shiva swiftly set his own army and the gods in motion; and the lord of the Danavas, together with his army, joined the opening of the battle.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.9.22.3)

स्वयं महेन्द्रो युयुधे सार्धं च वृषपर्वणा । भास्करो युयुधे विप्रचित्तिना सह सत्वरः

svayaṁ mahendro yuyudhe sārdhaṁ ca vṛṣaparvaṇā | bhāskaro yuyudhe vipracittinā saha satvaraḥ

Mahendra himself fought against Vrishaparvan; Bhaskara swiftly fought against Vipracitti.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.9.22.4)

दम्भेन सह चन्द्रश्च चकार परमं रणम् । कालस्वरेण कालश्च गोकर्णेन हुताशनः

dambhena saha candraśca cakāra paramaṁ raṇam | kālasvareṇa kālaśca gokarṇena hutāśanaḥ

Chandra fought a fierce battle with Dambha; Kala fought with Kalasvara, and Agni with Gokarna.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.9.22.5)

कुबेरः कालकेयेन विश्वकर्मा मयेन च । भयङ्करेण मृत्युश्च संहारेण यमस्तथा

kuberaḥ kālakeyena viśvakarmā mayena ca | bhayaṅkareṇa mṛtyuśca saṁhāreṇa yamastathā

Kubera fought with Kalakeya, Vishvakarma with Maya, Mrityu with Bhayankara, and Yama with Samhara.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.9.22.6)

विकङ्कणेन वरुणश्चञ्चलेन समीरणः । बुधश्च घृतपृष्ठेन रक्ताक्षेण शनैश्चरः

vikaṅkaṇena varuṇaścañcalena samīraṇaḥ | budhaśca ghṛtapṛṣṭhena raktākṣeṇa śanaiścaraḥ

Varuna fought with Vikankana, Samirana with Chanchala, Budha with Ghritaprishtha, and Shanaishchara with Raktaksha.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.9.22.7)

जयन्तो रत्नसारेण वसवो वर्चसां गणैः । अश्विनौ च दीप्तिमता धूम्रेण नलकूबरः

jayanto ratnasāreṇa vasavo varcasāṁ gaṇaiḥ | aśvinau ca dīptimatā dhūmreṇa nalakūbaraḥ

Jayanta fought with Ratnasara, the Vasus with the Varchas troops, the two Ashvins with Diptimat, and Nalakubara with Dhumra.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.9.22.8)

धुरन्धरेण धर्मश्च उषाक्षेण च मङ्गलः । शोभाकरेण वै भानुः पिठरेण च मन्मथः

dhurandhareṇa dharmaśca uṣākṣeṇa ca maṅgalaḥ | śobhākareṇa vai bhānuḥ piṭhareṇa ca manmathaḥ

Dharma fought with Dhurandhara, Mangala with Ushaksha, Bhanu with Shobhakara, and Manmatha with Pithara.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.9.22.9)

गोधामुखेन चूर्णेन खड्गेन च ध्वजेन च । काञ्चीमुखेन पिण्डेन धूमेण सह नन्दिना

godhāmukhena cūrṇena khaḍgena ca dhvajena ca | kāñcīmukhena piṇḍena dhūmeṇa saha nandinā

— others fought with Godhamukha, Churna, Khadga, and Dhvaja; and with Kanchimukha, Pinda, and Dhuma against Nandi —

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.9.22.10)

विश्वेन च पलाशेनादित्याद्या युयुधुः परे । एकादश च रुद्रा वै एकादशभयङ्करैः

viśvena ca palāśenādityādyā yuyudhuḥ pare | ekādaśa ca rudrā vai ekādaśabhayaṅkaraiḥ

— and Vishva fought with Palasha; the Adityas and other gods fought on, and the eleven Rudras fought against eleven fearsome demons —

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.9.22.11)

महामारी च युयुधे चोग्रचण्डादिभिः सह । नन्दीश्वरादयः सर्वे दानवानां गणैः सह

mahāmārī ca yuyudhe cogracaṇḍādibhiḥ saha | nandīśvarādayaḥ sarve dānavānāṁ gaṇaiḥ saha

— Mahamari fought against Ugrachanda and the others; and Nandishvara and all the rest fought against the hosts of the Danavas —

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.9.22.12)

युयुधुश्च महायुद्धे प्रलयेऽपि भयङ्करे । वटमूले च शम्भुश्च तस्थौ काल्या सुतेन च

yuyudhuśca mahāyuddhe pralaye'pi bhayaṅkare | vaṭamūle ca śambhuśca tasthau kālyā sutena ca

— they fought on in that great battle, terrible as the cosmic dissolution itself; and Shambhu remained beneath the banyan, together with Kali's son.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.9.22.13)

सर्वे च युयुधुः सैन्यसमूहाः सततं मुने । रत्नसिंहासने रम्ये कोटिभिर्दानवैः सह

sarve ca yuyudhuḥ sainyasamūhāḥ satataṁ mune | ratnasiṁhāsane ramye koṭibhirdānavaiḥ saha

All the assembled hosts fought on ceaselessly, O sage; and upon a lovely jeweled throne, together with crores of Danavas —

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.9.22.14)

उवास शङ्खचूडश्च रत्नभूषणभूषितः । शङ्करस्य च ये योधा दानवैश्च पराजिताः

uvāsa śaṅkhacūḍaśca ratnabhūṣaṇabhūṣitaḥ | śaṅkarasya ca ye yodhā dānavaiśca parājitāḥ

— Shankhachuda sat, adorned with jeweled ornaments; while Shankara's warriors began to be overcome by the Danavas —

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.9.22.15)

देवाश्च दुद्रुवुः सर्वे भीताश्च क्षतविग्रहाः । चकार कोपं स्कन्दश्च देवेभ्यश्चाभयं ददौ

devāśca dudruvuḥ sarve bhītāśca kṣatavigrahāḥ | cakāra kopaṁ skandaśca devebhyaścābhayaṁ dadau

— all the gods fled, terrified and wounded; Skanda then grew angry, and granted the gods safety.

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.9.22.16)

बलं च स्वर्गणानां च वर्धयामास तेजसा । सोऽयमेकश्च युयुधे दानवानां गणैः सह

balaṁ ca svargaṇānāṁ ca vardhayāmāsa tejasā | so'yamekaśca yuyudhe dānavānāṁ gaṇaiḥ saha

He increased the strength of the celestial hosts through his own splendor; and he alone began to fight against the hosts of the Danavas —

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.9.22.17)

अक्षौहिणीनां शतकं समरे च जघान सः । असुरान्पातयामास काली कमललोचना

akṣauhiṇīnāṁ śatakaṁ samare ca jaghāna saḥ | asurānpātayāmāsa kālī kamalalocanā

— and he slew a hundred akshauhinis of that army in that battle; and lotus-eyed Kali too fell to striking down the asuras —

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.9.22.18)

पपौ रक्तं दानवानामतिकुद्धा ततः परम् । दशलक्षगजेन्द्राणां शतलक्षं च कोटिशः

papau raktaṁ dānavānāmatikuddhā tataḥ param | daśalakṣagajendrāṇāṁ śatalakṣaṁ ca koṭiśaḥ

— greatly enraged, she began to drink the blood of the Danavas; a million great elephants, and crores upon crores more —

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.9.22.19)

समादायैकहस्तेन मुखे चिक्षेप लीलया । कबन्धानां सहस्रं च ननर्त समरे मुने

samādāyaikahastena mukhe cikṣepa līlayā | kabandhānāṁ sahasraṁ ca nanarta samare mune

— she seized with a single hand and cast into her mouth as if in play; and, O sage, she danced amidst a thousand headless trunks in that battle.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.9.22.20)

स्कन्दस्य शरजालेन दानवाः क्षतविग्रहाः । भीताश्च दुद्रुवुः सर्वे महारणपराक्रमाः

skandasya śarajālena dānavāḥ kṣatavigrahāḥ | bhītāśca dudruvuḥ sarve mahāraṇaparākramāḥ

Wounded by Skanda's net of arrows, all those Danavas, once mighty warriors of great battle, fled in terror.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.9.22.21)

वृषपर्वा विप्रचित्तिर्दम्भश्चापि विकङ्कणः । स्कन्देन सार्धं युयुधुस्ते सर्वे विक्रमेण च

vṛṣaparvā vipracittirdambhaścāpi vikaṅkaṇaḥ | skandena sārdhaṁ yuyudhuste sarve vikrameṇa ca

Vrishaparvan, Vipracitti, Dambha, and Vikankana too — all of them fought against Skanda with great valor.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.9.22.22)

महामारी च युयुधे न बभूव पराङ्मुखी । बभूवुस्ते च सङ्क्षुब्धाः स्कन्दस्य शक्तिपीडिताः

mahāmārī ca yuyudhe na babhūva parāṅmukhī | babhūvuste ca saṅkṣubdhāḥ skandasya śaktipīḍitāḥ

Mahamari too fought on and never turned back; and they all grew agitated, tormented by Skanda's spear.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.9.22.23)

न दुद्रुवुर्भयात्स्वर्गे पुष्पवृष्टिर्बभूव ह । स्कन्दस्य समरं दृष्ट्वा महारौद्रं समुल्बणम्

na dudruvurbhayātsvarge puṣpavṛṣṭirbabhūva ha | skandasya samaraṁ dṛṣṭvā mahāraudraṁ samulbaṇam

They did not flee out of fear; and, seeing Skanda's battle, so terrible and fierce, a shower of flowers fell in heaven —

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.9.22.24)

दानवानां क्षयकरं यथा प्राकृतिको लयः । राजा विमानमारुह्य चकार बाणवर्षणम्

dānavānāṁ kṣayakaraṁ yathā prākṛtiko layaḥ | rājā vimānamāruhya cakāra bāṇavarṣaṇam

— that destroyer of the Danavas, as if it were the great cosmic dissolution itself. The king, mounting his chariot, then rained down arrows —

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.9.22.25)

नृपस्य शरवृष्टिश्च घनस्य वर्षणं यथा । महाघोरान्धकारश्च वह्न्युत्थानं बभूव च

nṛpasya śaravṛṣṭiśca ghanasya varṣaṇaṁ yathā | mahāghorāndhakāraśca vahnyutthānaṁ babhūva ca

— the king's shower of arrows was like the downpour of a dense rain-cloud; a great and terrible darkness fell, and flames of fire broke out.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.9.22.26)

देवाः प्रदुद्रुवुः सर्वेऽप्यन्ये नन्दीश्वरादयः । एक एव कार्तिकेयस्तस्थौ समरमूर्धनि

devāḥ pradudruvuḥ sarve'pyanye nandīśvarādayaḥ | eka eva kārtikeyastasthau samaramūrdhani

All the other gods, Nandishvara and the rest, fled; only Kartikeya alone remained at the forefront of the battle.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.9.22.27)

पर्वतानां च सर्पाणां शिलानां शाखिनां तथा । नृपश्चकार वृष्टिं च दुर्वारां च भयङ्करीम्

parvatānāṁ ca sarpāṇāṁ śilānāṁ śākhināṁ tathā | nṛpaścakāra vṛṣṭiṁ ca durvārāṁ ca bhayaṅkarīm

The king rained down mountains, serpents, boulders, and trees — an irresistible and terrible shower.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.9.22.28)

नृपस्य शरवृष्ट्या च प्रहितः शिवनन्दनः । नीहारेण च सान्द्रेण प्रहितो भास्करो यथा

nṛpasya śaravṛṣṭyā ca prahitaḥ śivanandanaḥ | nīhāreṇa ca sāndreṇa prahito bhāskaro yathā

Shiva's son was assailed by the king's shower of arrows, as the sun is assailed by a thick, dense fog.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.9.22.29)

धनुश्चिच्छेद स्कन्दस्य दुर्वहं च भयङ्करः । बभञ्ज च रथं दिव्यं चिच्छेद रथपीठकान्

dhanuściccheda skandasya durvahaṁ ca bhayaṅkaraḥ | babhañja ca rathaṁ divyaṁ ciccheda rathapīṭhakān

That fearsome warrior shattered Skanda's mighty, hard-to-bear bow; he broke his divine chariot and cut down its seats and framework.

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.9.22.30)

मयूरं जर्जरीभूतं दिव्यास्त्रेण चकार सः । शक्तिं चिक्षेप सूर्याभां तस्य वक्षस्य घातिनीम्

mayūraṁ jarjarībhūtaṁ divyāstreṇa cakāra saḥ | śaktiṁ cikṣepa sūryābhāṁ tasya vakṣasya ghātinīm

With a divine missile he shattered his peacock mount; and hurled at his chest a spear, radiant as the sun, meant to strike him down.

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.9.22.31)

क्षणं मूर्च्छां च सम्प्राप बभूव चेतनः पुनः । गृहीत्वा तद्धनुर्दिव्यं यद्दत्तं विष्णुना पुरा

kṣaṇaṁ mūrcchāṁ ca samprāpa babhūva cetanaḥ punaḥ | gṛhītvā taddhanurdivyaṁ yaddattaṁ viṣṇunā purā

For a moment he fell into a swoon, and then regained his senses; taking up that divine bow which Vishnu had once given him —

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.9.22.32)

रत्नेन्द्रसारनिर्माणयानमारुह्य कार्तिकः । शस्त्रास्त्रं च गृहीत्वा च चकार रणमुल्बणम्

ratnendrasāranirmāṇayānamāruhya kārtikaḥ | śastrāstraṁ ca gṛhītvā ca cakāra raṇamulbaṇam

— and mounting a chariot fashioned of the finest gems, Kartika, taking up his weapons, waged a fierce battle once more.

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.9.22.33)

सर्पांश्च पर्वतांश्चैव वृक्षांश्च प्रस्तरांस्तथा । सर्वांश्चिच्छेद कोपेन दिव्यास्त्रेण शिवात्मजः

sarpāṁśca parvatāṁścaiva vṛkṣāṁśca prastarāṁstathā | sarvāṁściccheda kopena divyāstreṇa śivātmajaḥ

Shiva's son, in anger, cut down with his divine weapon all the serpents, mountains, trees, and boulders.

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.9.22.34)

वह्निं निर्वापयामास पार्जन्येन प्रतापवान् । रथं धनुश्च चिच्छेद शङ्खचूडस्य लीलया

vahniṁ nirvāpayāmāsa pārjanyena pratāpavān | rathaṁ dhanuśca ciccheda śaṅkhacūḍasya līlayā

That mighty one extinguished the fire with the Parjanya missile; and, as if in play, cut down Shankhachuda's chariot and bow.

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.9.22.35)

सन्नाहं सारथिं चैव किरीटं मुकुटोज्ज्वलम् । चिक्षेप शक्तिं शुक्लाभां दानवेन्द्रस्य वक्षसि

sannāhaṁ sārathiṁ caiva kirīṭaṁ mukuṭojjvalam | cikṣepa śaktiṁ śuklābhāṁ dānavendrasya vakṣasi

He destroyed his armor and charioteer, and his crown, radiant with its diadem; and he hurled a bright spear at the chest of the lord of the Danavas.

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.9.22.36)

मूर्च्छां सम्प्राप्य राजा च चेतनश्च बभूव ह । आरुरोह यानमन्यद्धनुर्जग्राह सत्वरः

mūrcchāṁ samprāpya rājā ca cetanaśca babhūva ha | āruroha yānamanyaddhanurjagrāha satvaraḥ

The king fell into a swoon, and then regained his senses; he mounted another chariot and swiftly took up a bow.

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.9.22.37)

चकार शरजालं च मायया मायिनां वरः । गुहं चच्छाद समरे शरजालेन नारद

cakāra śarajālaṁ ca māyayā māyināṁ varaḥ | guhaṁ cacchāda samare śarajālena nārada

That foremost of illusionists wove a net of arrows by his own maya; and, O Narada, in that battle he enveloped Guha entirely in that net.

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.9.22.38)

जग्राह शक्तिमव्यग्रां शतसूर्यसमप्रभाम् । प्रलयाग्निशिखारूपां विष्णोश्च तेजसाऽऽवृताम्

jagrāha śaktimavyagrāṁ śatasūryasamaprabhām | pralayāgniśikhārūpāṁ viṣṇośca tejasā''vṛtām

He took up an unwavering spear, radiant as a hundred suns, in the very form of the flame of the cosmic-dissolution fire, wrapped in Vishnu's own splendor.

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.9.22.39)

चिक्षेप तां च कोपेन महावेगेन कार्तिके । पपात शक्तिस्तद्गात्रे वह्निराशिरिवोज्ज्वला

cikṣepa tāṁ ca kopena mahāvegena kārtike | papāta śaktistadgātre vahnirāśirivojjvalā

In fury he hurled it with great force at Kartika; and that spear fell upon his body, blazing like a mass of fire.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.9.22.40)

मूर्च्छां सम्प्राप शक्त्या च कार्तिकेयो महाबलः । काली गृहीत्वा तं क्रोडे निनाय शिवसनिधौ

mūrcchāṁ samprāpa śaktyā ca kārtikeyo mahābalaḥ | kālī gṛhītvā taṁ kroḍe nināya śivasanidhau

Kartikeya, mighty as he was, fell into a swoon from that spear; Kali took him in her arms and carried him to Shiva's presence.

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.9.22.41)

शिवस्तं चापि ज्ञानेन जीवयामास लीलया । ददौ बलमनन्तं च समुत्तस्थौ प्रतापवान्

śivastaṁ cāpi jñānena jīvayāmāsa līlayā | dadau balamanantaṁ ca samuttasthau pratāpavān

Shiva, by his own knowledge, revived him as if in play; he gave him boundless strength, and that mighty one rose up again.

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.9.22.42)

काली जगाम समरं रक्षितुं कार्तिकस्य या । वीरास्तामनुजग्मुश्च ते च नन्दीश्वरादयः

kālī jagāma samaraṁ rakṣituṁ kārtikasya yā | vīrāstāmanujagmuśca te ca nandīśvarādayaḥ

Kali went to the battle to protect Kartika; and those warriors, Nandishvara and the rest, followed after her.

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.9.22.43)

सर्वे देवाश्च गन्धर्वा यक्षराक्षसकिन्नराः । वाद्यभाण्डाश्च बहुशः शतशो मधुवाहकाः

sarve devāśca gandharvā yakṣarākṣasakinnarāḥ | vādyabhāṇḍāśca bahuśaḥ śataśo madhuvāhakāḥ

All the gods, Gandharvas, Yakshas, Rakshasas, and Kinnaras; and many hundreds of musicians and bearers of sweet wine —

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.9.22.44)

सा च गत्वाथ सङ्ग्रामं सिंहनादं चकार च । देव्याश्च सिंहनादेन प्रापुर्मूर्च्छां च दानवाः

sā ca gatvātha saṅgrāmaṁ siṁhanādaṁ cakāra ca | devyāśca siṁhanādena prāpurmūrcchāṁ ca dānavāḥ

— went along with her. Going into the battle, she let out a lion's roar; and by the goddess's roar, the Danavas fell into a swoon.

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.9.22.45)

अट्टाट्टहासमशिवं चकार च पुनः पुनः । दृष्ट्वा पपौ च माध्वीकं ननर्त रणमूर्धनि

aṭṭāṭṭahāsamaśivaṁ cakāra ca punaḥ punaḥ | dṛṣṭvā papau ca mādhvīkaṁ nanarta raṇamūrdhani

She laughed a terrible, thunderous laugh again and again; and, seeing this, she drank sweet wine and danced at the forefront of the battle.

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.9.22.46)

उग्रदंष्ट्रा चोग्रदण्डा कोटवी च पपौ मधु । योगिनीडाकिनीनां च गणाः सुरगणादयः

ugradaṁṣṭrā cogradaṇḍā koṭavī ca papau madhu | yoginīḍākinīnāṁ ca gaṇāḥ suragaṇādayaḥ

Ugradamshtra, Ugradanda, and Kotavi drank wine too; and the hosts of Yoginis, Dakinis, and gods likewise —

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.9.22.47)

दृष्ट्वा कालीं शङ्खचूडः शीघ्रमाजौ समाययौ । दानवाश्च भयं प्रापू राजा तेभ्योऽभयं ददौ

dṛṣṭvā kālīṁ śaṅkhacūḍaḥ śīghramājau samāyayau | dānavāśca bhayaṁ prāpū rājā tebhyo'bhayaṁ dadau

Seeing Kali, Shankhachuda came swiftly into the battle; the Danavas fell into fear, but the king granted them safety.

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.9.22.48)

काली चिक्षेप वह्निं च प्रलयाग्निशिखोपमम् । राजा निर्वापयामास पार्जन्येन च लीलया

kālī cikṣepa vahniṁ ca pralayāgniśikhopamam | rājā nirvāpayāmāsa pārjanyena ca līlayā

Kali hurled fire, like the flame of the cosmic-dissolution blaze; the king, as if in play, extinguished it with the Parjanya missile.

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.9.22.49)

चिक्षेप वारुणं सा च तीव्रं च महदद्भुतम् । गान्धर्वेण च चिच्छेद दानवेन्द्रश्च लीलया

cikṣepa vāruṇaṁ sā ca tīvraṁ ca mahadadbhutam | gāndharveṇa ca ciccheda dānavendraśca līlayā

She hurled the Varuna missile, fierce and wondrously great; the lord of the Danavas, as if in play, cut it down with the Gandharva missile.

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.9.22.50)

माहेश्वरं प्रचिक्षेप काली वह्निशिखोपमम् । राजा जघान तं शीघ्रं वैष्णवेन च लीलया

māheśvaraṁ pracikṣepa kālī vahniśikhopamam | rājā jaghāna taṁ śīghraṁ vaiṣṇavena ca līlayā

Kali hurled the Maheshvara missile, like a flame of fire; the king swiftly destroyed it, as if in play, with the Vaishnava missile.

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.9.22.51)

नारायणास्त्रं सा देवी चिक्षेप मन्त्रपूर्वकम् । राजा ननाम तद् दृष्ट्वा चावरुह्य रथादसौ

nārāyaṇāstraṁ sā devī cikṣepa mantrapūrvakam | rājā nanāma tad dṛṣṭvā cāvaruhya rathādasau

The goddess hurled the Narayana missile, invoked with mantra; the king, seeing it, descended from his chariot and bowed to it.

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.9.22.52)

ऊर्ध्वं जगाम तच्चास्त्रं प्रलयाग्निशिखोपमम् । पपात शङ्खचूडश्च भक्त्या तं दण्डवद्भुवि

ūrdhvaṁ jagāma taccāstraṁ pralayāgniśikhopamam | papāta śaṅkhacūḍaśca bhaktyā taṁ daṇḍavadbhuvi

That missile, like the flame of the cosmic-dissolution fire, passed harmlessly upward; and Shankhachuda fell to the ground before it in full prostration, out of devotion.

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.9.22.53)

ब्रह्मास्त्रं सा च चिक्षेप यत्नतो मन्त्रपूर्वकम् । ब्रह्मास्त्रेण महाराजो निर्वापं च चकार सः

brahmāstraṁ sā ca cikṣepa yatnato mantrapūrvakam | brahmāstreṇa mahārājo nirvāpaṁ ca cakāra saḥ

She then, with effort, hurled the Brahma missile, invoked with mantra; the great king neutralized it with his own Brahma missile.

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.9.22.54)

तदा चिक्षेप दिव्यास्त्रं सा देवी मन्त्रपूर्वकम् । राजा दिव्यास्त्रजालेन तन्निर्वाणं चकार च

tadā cikṣepa divyāstraṁ sā devī mantrapūrvakam | rājā divyāstrajālena tannirvāṇaṁ cakāra ca

Then the goddess hurled a divine missile, invoked with mantra; the king neutralized it with a net of divine missiles.

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.9.22.55)

तदा चिक्षेप शक्तिं च यत्नतो योजनायताम् । राजा दिव्यास्त्रजालेन शतखण्डां चकार ह

tadā cikṣepa śaktiṁ ca yatnato yojanāyatām | rājā divyāstrajālena śatakhaṇḍāṁ cakāra ha

Then she hurled, with effort, a spear a full yojana long; the king, with his net of divine missiles, shattered it into a hundred pieces.

Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.9.22.56)

जग्राह मन्त्रपूतं च देवी पाशुपतं रुषा । निक्षेपणं निरोद्धुं च वाग्बभूवाशरीरिणी

jagrāha mantrapūtaṁ ca devī pāśupataṁ ruṣā | nikṣepaṇaṁ niroddhuṁ ca vāgbabhūvāśarīriṇī

In fury the goddess took up the Pashupata missile, purified by mantra; but to stop her from casting it, a bodiless voice arose —

Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.9.22.57)

मृत्युः पाशुपते नास्ति नृपस्य च महात्मनः । यावदस्ति च मन्त्रस्य कवचं च हरेरिति

mṛtyuḥ pāśupate nāsti nṛpasya ca mahātmanaḥ | yāvadasti ca mantrasya kavacaṁ ca hareriti

— "there is no death by the Pashupata for this great-souled king, so long as the armor of Hari's mantra remains upon him —

Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.9.22.58)

यावत्सतीत्वमस्त्येव सत्याश्च नृपयोषितः । तावदस्य जरामृत्युर्नास्तीति ब्रह्मणो वचः

yāvatsatītvamastyeva satyāśca nṛpayoṣitaḥ | tāvadasya jarāmṛtyurnāstīti brahmaṇo vacaḥ

— and so long as the chastity of the king's truthful wife remains unbroken, neither old age nor death shall touch him." Such was Brahma's own word.

Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.9.22.59)

इत्याकर्ण्य भद्रकाली न तच्चिक्षेप शस्त्रकम् । शतलक्षं दानवानां जग्रास लीलया क्षुधा

ityākarṇya bhadrakālī na taccikṣepa śastrakam | śatalakṣaṁ dānavānāṁ jagrāsa līlayā kṣudhā

Hearing this, Bhadrakali did not cast that weapon; instead, in her hunger, she devoured a hundred hundred-thousand Danavas as if in play.

Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.9.22.60)

ग्रस्तुं जगाम वेगेन शङ्खचूडं भयङ्करी । दिव्यास्त्रेण सुतीक्ष्णेन वारयामास दानवः

grastuṁ jagāma vegena śaṅkhacūḍaṁ bhayaṅkarī | divyāstreṇa sutīkṣṇena vārayāmāsa dānavaḥ

That terrifying goddess rushed swiftly to devour Shankhachuda himself; the Danava warded her off with a most sharp divine missile.

Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.9.22.61)

खड्गं चिक्षेप सा देवी ग्रीष्मसूर्योपमं यथा । दिव्यास्त्रेण दानवेन्द्रः शतखण्डं चकार सः

khaḍgaṁ cikṣepa sā devī grīṣmasūryopamaṁ yathā | divyāstreṇa dānavendraḥ śatakhaṇḍaṁ cakāra saḥ

The goddess hurled her sword, blazing like the summer sun; the lord of the Danavas shattered it into a hundred pieces with his divine missile.

Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.9.22.62)

पुनर्ग्रस्तुं महादेवी वेगेन च जगाम तम् । सर्वसिद्धेश्वरः श्रीमान्ववृधे दानवेश्वरः

punargrastuṁ mahādevī vegena ca jagāma tam | sarvasiddheśvaraḥ śrīmānvavṛdhe dānaveśvaraḥ

The great goddess again rushed swiftly to devour him; but the glorious lord of the Danavas, master of all attainment, only grew stronger still.

Verse 63 (devibhagavatam.9.22.63)

वेगेन मुष्टिना काली कोपयुक्ता भयङ्करी । बभञ्ज च रथं तस्य जघान सारथिं सती

vegena muṣṭinā kālī kopayuktā bhayaṅkarī | babhañja ca rathaṁ tasya jaghāna sārathiṁ satī

Kali, filled with fury, terrible, struck swiftly with her fist; that goddess smashed his chariot and slew his charioteer.

Verse 64 (devibhagavatam.9.22.64)

सा च शूलं प्रचिक्षेप प्रलयाग्निशिखोपमम् । वामहस्तेन जग्राह शङ्खचूडः स्वलीलया

sā ca śūlaṁ pracikṣepa pralayāgniśikhopamam | vāmahastena jagrāha śaṅkhacūḍaḥ svalīlayā

She hurled her trident, like the flame of the cosmic-dissolution fire; Shankhachuda caught it with his left hand, as if in play.

Verse 65 (devibhagavatam.9.22.65)

मुष्ट्या जघान तं देवी महाकोपेन वेगतः । बभ्राम च तया दैत्यः क्षणं मूर्च्छामवाप च

muṣṭyā jaghāna taṁ devī mahākopena vegataḥ | babhrāma ca tayā daityaḥ kṣaṇaṁ mūrcchāmavāpa ca

The goddess struck him with her fist, in great fury and with force; the demon reeled from that blow and fell into a swoon for a moment.

Verse 66 (devibhagavatam.9.22.66)

क्षणेन चेतनां प्राप्य समुत्तस्थौ प्रतापवान् । न चकार बाहुयुद्धं देव्या सह ननाम ताम्

kṣaṇena cetanāṁ prāpya samuttasthau pratāpavān | na cakāra bāhuyuddhaṁ devyā saha nanāma tām

In a moment he regained his senses and rose up, mighty as ever; but he did not engage the goddess in hand combat — instead he bowed to her.

Verse 67 (devibhagavatam.9.22.67)

देव्याश्चास्त्रं स चिच्छेद जग्राह च स्वतेजसा । नास्त्रं चिक्षेप तां भक्तो मातृभक्त्या तु वैष्णवः

devyāścāstraṁ sa ciccheda jagrāha ca svatejasā | nāstraṁ cikṣepa tāṁ bhakto mātṛbhaktyā tu vaiṣṇavaḥ

He cut down the goddess's weapons, and even absorbed their force with his own splendor; but, a Vaishnava devotee, out of devotion to her as his mother, he never once hurled a weapon at her.

Verse 68 (devibhagavatam.9.22.68)

गृहीत्वा दानवं देवी भ्रामयित्वा पुनः पुनः । ऊर्ध्वं च प्रापयामास महावेगेन कोपिता

gṛhītvā dānavaṁ devī bhrāmayitvā punaḥ punaḥ | ūrdhvaṁ ca prāpayāmāsa mahāvegena kopitā

The goddess, enraged, seized the Danava, whirled him around again and again, and with great force flung him up into the sky.

Verse 69 (devibhagavatam.9.22.69)

ऊर्ध्वात्पपात वेगेन शङ्खचूडः प्रतापवान् । निपत्य च समुत्तस्थौ प्रणम्य भद्रकालिकाम्

ūrdhvātpapāta vegena śaṅkhacūḍaḥ pratāpavān | nipatya ca samuttasthau praṇamya bhadrakālikām

From on high, that mighty Shankhachuda fell down with force; and, having fallen, he rose up again, and bowed to Bhadrakali.

Verse 70 (devibhagavatam.9.22.70)

रत्नेन्द्रसारनिर्माणं विमानं सुमनोहरम् । आरुरोह हर्षयुक्तो न विश्रान्तो महारणे

ratnendrasāranirmāṇaṁ vimānaṁ sumanoharam | āruroha harṣayukto na viśrānto mahāraṇe

He mounted a most enchanting chariot fashioned of the finest gems, filled with joy, unwearied still in that great battle.

Verse 71 (devibhagavatam.9.22.71)

दानवानां च क्षतजं सा देवी च पपौ क्षुधा । पीत्वा भुक्त्वा भद्रकाली जगाम शङ्करान्तिकम्

dānavānāṁ ca kṣatajaṁ sā devī ca papau kṣudhā | pītvā bhuktvā bhadrakālī jagāma śaṅkarāntikam

That goddess, hungry, drank the blood of the Danavas; and having drunk and eaten, Bhadrakali went to Shankara's presence.

Verse 72 (devibhagavatam.9.22.72)

उवाच रणवृत्तान्तं पौर्वापर्यं यथाक्रमम् । श्रुत्वा जहास शम्भुश्च दानवानां विनाशनम्

uvāca raṇavṛttāntaṁ paurvāparyaṁ yathākramam | śrutvā jahāsa śambhuśca dānavānāṁ vināśanam

She told him the whole account of the battle, from beginning to end, in due order; and hearing of the destruction of the Danavas, Shambhu laughed.

Verse 73 (devibhagavatam.9.22.73)

लक्षं च दानवेन्द्राणामवशिष्टं रणेऽधुना । भुञ्जन्त्या निर्गतं वक्त्रात्तदन्यं भुक्तमीश्वर

lakṣaṁ ca dānavendrāṇāmavaśiṣṭaṁ raṇe'dhunā | bhuñjantyā nirgataṁ vaktrāttadanyaṁ bhuktamīśvara

"Now only a hundred thousand of the Danava lords remain in the battle, O Lord; the rest I have devoured, though some escaped even from my own mouth as I was eating them.

Verse 74 (devibhagavatam.9.22.74)

सङ्ग्रामे दानवेन्द्रं च हन्तुं पाशुपतेन वै । अवध्यस्तव राजेति वाग्बभूवाशरीरिणी

saṅgrāme dānavendraṁ ca hantuṁ pāśupatena vai | avadhyastava rājeti vāgbabhūvāśarīriṇī

I made ready to slay the lord of the Danavas in battle with the Pashupata, but a bodiless voice declared: 'O king, this one cannot be slain by you.'

Verse 75 (devibhagavatam.9.22.75)

राजेन्द्रश्च महाज्ञानी महाबलपराक्रमः । न च चिक्षेप मय्यस्त्रं चिच्छेद मम सायकम्

rājendraśca mahājñānī mahābalaparākramaḥ | na ca cikṣepa mayyastraṁ ciccheda mama sāyakam

That king, most wise, of great strength and valor, never once hurled a weapon at me — he only ever cut down my own arrows."
