Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.9.33.1)

धर्मराज उवाच । हरिसेवारतः शुद्धो योगसिद्धो व्रती सति । तपस्वी ब्रह्मचारी च न याति नरकं ध्रुवम्

dharmarāja uvāca | harisevārataḥ śuddho yogasiddho vratī sati | tapasvī brahmacārī ca na yāti narakaṁ dhruvam

Dharmaraja said: O virtuous one, he who delights in the service of Hari, is pure, accomplished in yoga, faithful to his vows, an ascetic, and a celibate — such a man surely does not go to hell.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.9.33.2)

कटुवाचा बान्धवांश्च बललेपेन यो नरः । दग्धान्करोति बलवान् वह्निकुण्डं प्रयाति सः

kaṭuvācā bāndhavāṁśca balalepena yo naraḥ | dagdhānkaroti balavān vahnikuṇḍaṁ prayāti saḥ

The powerful man who, with harsh speech and the arrogance of strength, torments his own kinsfolk, goes to the Fire-Pit.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.9.33.3)

स्वगात्रलोममानाब्दं तत्र स्थित्वा हुताशने । पशुयोनिमवाप्नोति रौद्रदग्धां त्रिजन्मनि

svagātralomamānābdaṁ tatra sthitvā hutāśane | paśuyonimavāpnoti raudradagdhāṁ trijanmani

Having remained in that fire for as many years as there are hairs upon his own body, he then obtains, for three births, the birth of a beast fiercely scorched by fire.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.9.33.4)

ब्राह्मणं तृषितं तप्तं क्षुधितं गृहमागतम् । न भोजयति यो मूढस्तप्तकुण्डं प्रयाति सः

brāhmaṇaṁ tṛṣitaṁ taptaṁ kṣudhitaṁ gṛhamāgatam | na bhojayati yo mūḍhastaptakuṇḍaṁ prayāti saḥ

The fool who fails to feed a brahmin — thirsty, heat-stricken, and hungry — who has come to his house, goes to the Boiling-Pit.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.9.33.5)

तत्र तल्लोममानं च वर्षं स्थित्वा च दुःखदे । तप्तस्थले वह्नितल्पे पक्षी च सप्तजन्मसु

tatra tallomamānaṁ ca varṣaṁ sthitvā ca duḥkhade | taptasthale vahnitalpe pakṣī ca saptajanmasu

Having remained in that painful place, upon a burning ground, a bed of fire, for as many years as there are hairs on his body, he then becomes a bird for seven births.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.9.33.6)

रविवारे च सङ्क्रान्त्याममायां श्राद्धवासरे । वस्त्राणां क्षारसंयोगं करोति केवलं नरः

ravivāre ca saṅkrāntyāmamāyāṁ śrāddhavāsare | vastrāṇāṁ kṣārasaṁyogaṁ karoti kevalaṁ naraḥ

The man who, on a Sunday, at a solstice, on the new-moon day, or on a day of shraddha, does nothing but treat cloth with alkali (the work of a washerman on forbidden days) —

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.9.33.7)

स याति क्षारकुण्डं च सूत्रमानाब्दमेव च । स व्रजेद्रजकीं योनिं सप्तजन्मसु भारते

sa yāti kṣārakuṇḍaṁ ca sūtramānābdameva ca | sa vrajedrajakīṁ yoniṁ saptajanmasu bhārate

— he goes to the Alkali-Pit for as many years as there are threads in the cloth. He then takes birth as a washerman for seven births in Bharata.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.9.33.8)

मूलप्रकृतिनिन्दां यः कुरुते मानवाधमः । वेदनिन्दां शास्त्रनिन्दां पुराणानां तथैव च

mūlaprakṛtinindāṁ yaḥ kurute mānavādhamaḥ | vedanindāṁ śāstranindāṁ purāṇānāṁ tathaiva ca

The basest of men who reviles the Root Prakriti, who reviles the Vedas, the Shastras, and likewise the Puranas;

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.9.33.9)

ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवादीनां तथा निन्दापरो जनः । गौरीवाण्यादिदेवीनां तथा निन्दापरो जनः

brahmaviṣṇuśivādīnāṁ tathā nindāparo janaḥ | gaurīvāṇyādidevīnāṁ tathā nindāparo janaḥ

— the person intent on reviling Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and the rest; and likewise the one intent on reviling Gauri, Vani, and the other goddesses —

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.9.33.10)

ते सर्वे निरये यान्ति तस्मिन्कुण्डे भयानके । नातः परतरं कुण्डं दुःखदं तु भविष्यति

te sarve niraye yānti tasminkuṇḍe bhayānake | nātaḥ parataraṁ kuṇḍaṁ duḥkhadaṁ tu bhaviṣyati

— all such go to that hell, into that terrifying pit; there is no more painful pit than this.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.9.33.11)

तत्र स्थित्वानेककल्पं सर्पयोनिं व्रजेत्पुनः । देवीनिन्दापराधस्य प्रायश्चित्तं न विद्यते

tatra sthitvānekakalpaṁ sarpayoniṁ vrajetpunaḥ | devīnindāparādhasya prāyaścittaṁ na vidyate

Having remained there for many kalpas, he then takes birth as a serpent. For the offense of reviling the Goddess, there is no expiation.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.9.33.12)

स्वदत्तां परदत्तां वा वृत्तिं च सुरविप्रयोः । षष्टिवर्षसहस्राणि विट्कुण्डं च प्रयाति सः

svadattāṁ paradattāṁ vā vṛttiṁ ca suraviprayoḥ | ṣaṣṭivarṣasahasrāṇi viṭkuṇḍaṁ ca prayāti saḥ

He who seizes an endowment — whether given by himself or by another — meant for the maintenance of gods or brahmins goes to the Excrement-Pit for sixty thousand years.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.9.33.13)

तावन्त्येव च वर्षाणि विड्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति । षष्टिवर्षसहस्राणि विट्कृमिश्च पुनर्भुवि

tāvantyeva ca varṣāṇi viḍbhojī tatra tiṣṭhati | ṣaṣṭivarṣasahasrāṇi viṭkṛmiśca punarbhuvi

For that same span of years he remains there, eating excrement. Then, upon the earth, he becomes a worm in excrement for sixty thousand years.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.9.33.14)

परकीयतडागे च तडागं यः करोति च । उत्सजेद्दैवदोषेण मूत्रकुण्डं प्रयाति सः

parakīyataḍāge ca taḍāgaṁ yaḥ karoti ca | utsajeddaivadoṣeṇa mūtrakuṇḍaṁ prayāti saḥ

He who builds his own pond by encroaching on another's, or who, through some misfortune, causes another's pond to be ruined, goes to the Urine-Pit.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.9.33.15)

तद्रेणुमानवर्षं च तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति । पुनः पूर्णशताब्दं च स वृषो भारते भवेत्

tadreṇumānavarṣaṁ ca tadbhojī tatra tiṣṭhati | punaḥ pūrṇaśatābdaṁ ca sa vṛṣo bhārate bhavet

For as many years as there are particles in that pond's soil, he is made to consume it there. Then, for a full hundred years, he becomes a bull in Bharata.

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.9.33.16)

एकाकी मिष्टमश्नाति श्लेष्मकुण्डं प्रयाति च । पूर्णमब्दशतं चैव तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति

ekākī miṣṭamaśnāti śleṣmakuṇḍaṁ prayāti ca | pūrṇamabdaśataṁ caiva tadbhojī tatra tiṣṭhati

He who eats sweets alone, without sharing, goes to the Phlegm-Pit; for a full hundred years he remains there, made to eat it.

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.9.33.17)

ततः पूर्णशताब्दं च स प्रेतो भारते भवेत् । श्लेष्ममूत्रपरं चैव पूयं भुङ्क्ते ततः शुचिः

tataḥ pūrṇaśatābdaṁ ca sa preto bhārate bhavet | śleṣmamūtraparaṁ caiva pūyaṁ bhuṅkte tataḥ śuciḥ

Then, for a full hundred years, he becomes a preta in Bharata, feeding on phlegm, urine, and pus. After that, he becomes purified.

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.9.33.18)

पितरं मातरं चैव गुरुं भार्यां सुतं सुताम् । यो न पुष्णात्यनाथं च गरकुण्डं प्रयाति सः

pitaraṁ mātaraṁ caiva guruṁ bhāryāṁ sutaṁ sutām | yo na puṣṇātyanāthaṁ ca garakuṇḍaṁ prayāti saḥ

He who fails to support his father, mother, guru, wife, son, daughter, or one who is otherwise helpless, goes to the Poison-Pit.

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.9.33.19)

पूर्णमब्दशतं चैव तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति । ततो व्रजेद्भूतयोनिं शतवर्षं ततः शुचिः

pūrṇamabdaśataṁ caiva tadbhojī tatra tiṣṭhati | tato vrajedbhūtayoniṁ śatavarṣaṁ tataḥ śuciḥ

For a full hundred years he remains there, made to eat it. Thereafter he takes the form of a bhuta for a hundred years. After that, he becomes purified.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.9.33.20)

दृष्ट्वातिथिं वक्रचक्षुः करोति यो हि मानवः । पितृदेवास्तस्य जलं न गृह्णन्ति च पापिनः

dṛṣṭvātithiṁ vakracakṣuḥ karoti yo hi mānavaḥ | pitṛdevāstasya jalaṁ na gṛhṇanti ca pāpinaḥ

The man who, on seeing a guest, casts a hostile, crooked glance — the ancestors and gods do not accept the water-offering of that sinner.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.9.33.21)

यानि कानि च पापानि ब्रह्महत्यादिकानि च । इहैव लभते चान्ते दूषिकाकुण्डमाव्रजेत्

yāni kāni ca pāpāni brahmahatyādikāni ca | ihaiva labhate cānte dūṣikākuṇḍamāvrajet

Whatever sins there are, beginning with the killing of a brahmin, he incurs in this very offense, and at the end he goes to the Eye-Discharge-Pit.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.9.33.22)

पूर्णमब्दशतं चैव तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति । ततो व्रजेद्भूतयोनिं शतवर्षं ततः शुचिः

pūrṇamabdaśataṁ caiva tadbhojī tatra tiṣṭhati | tato vrajedbhūtayoniṁ śatavarṣaṁ tataḥ śuciḥ

For a full hundred years he remains there, made to eat it. Thereafter he takes the form of a bhuta for a hundred years. After that, he becomes purified.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.9.33.23)

दत्त्वा द्रव्यं च विप्राय चान्यस्मै दीयते यदि । स तिष्ठति वसाकुण्डे तद्भोजी शतवत्सरम्

dattvā dravyaṁ ca viprāya cānyasmai dīyate yadi | sa tiṣṭhati vasākuṇḍe tadbhojī śatavatsaram

If a gift, once given to a brahmin, is then diverted and given to someone else, he remains in the Fat-Pit, made to eat it, for a hundred years.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.9.33.24)

कृकलासो भवेत्सोऽपि भारते सप्तजन्मसु । ततो भवेन्महारौद्रो दरिद्रोऽल्पायुरेव च

kṛkalāso bhavetso'pi bhārate saptajanmasu | tato bhavenmahāraudro daridro'lpāyureva ca

He then becomes a chameleon in Bharata for seven births. Thereafter he becomes exceedingly fierce-tempered, poor, and short-lived.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.9.33.25)

पुमांसं कामिनी वापि कामिनीं वा पुमानथ । यः शुक्रं पाययत्येव शुक्रकुण्डं प्रयाति सः

pumāṁsaṁ kāminī vāpi kāminīṁ vā pumānatha | yaḥ śukraṁ pāyayatyeva śukrakuṇḍaṁ prayāti saḥ

Whether a woman does so to a man, or a man to a woman, whoever forces another to drink semen goes to the Semen-Pit.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.9.33.26)

पूर्णमब्दशतं चैव तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति । कृमियोनिं शताब्दं च व्रजेद्भूत्वा ततः शुचिः

pūrṇamabdaśataṁ caiva tadbhojī tatra tiṣṭhati | kṛmiyoniṁ śatābdaṁ ca vrajedbhūtvā tataḥ śuciḥ

For a full hundred years he remains there, made to consume it. He then becomes a worm for a hundred years, and after that becomes purified.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.9.33.27)

सन्ताड्य च गुरुं विप्रं रक्तपातं च कारयेत् । स च तिष्ठत्यसृक्कुण्डे तद्भोजी शतवत्सरम्

santāḍya ca guruṁ vipraṁ raktapātaṁ ca kārayet | sa ca tiṣṭhatyasṛkkuṇḍe tadbhojī śatavatsaram

He who strikes his guru or a brahmin and causes bloodshed remains in the Blood-Pit, made to consume it, for a hundred years.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.9.33.28)

ततो लभेद्व्याघ्रजन्म सप्तजन्मसु भारते । ततः शुद्धिमवाप्नोति मानवश्च क्रमेण ह

tato labhedvyāghrajanma saptajanmasu bhārate | tataḥ śuddhimavāpnoti mānavaśca krameṇa ha

Thereafter he obtains the birth of a tiger for seven births in Bharata. Then, in due course, he becomes a man once more and attains purification.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.9.33.29)

योऽश्रु तत्याज गायन्तं भक्तं दृष्ट्वा सगद्गदम् । श्रीकृष्णगुणसङ्गीते हसत्येव हि यो नरः

yo'śru tatyāja gāyantaṁ bhaktaṁ dṛṣṭvā sagadgadam | śrīkṛṣṇaguṇasaṅgīte hasatyeva hi yo naraḥ

He who, seeing a devotee singing with tears and a choked voice, does not himself weep; the man who instead laughs at the singing of Sri Krishna's glories —

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.9.33.30)

स वसेदश्रुकुण्डे च तद्भोजी शतवर्षकम् । ततो भवेच्च चाण्डालस्त्रिजन्मनि ततः शुचिः

sa vasedaśrukuṇḍe ca tadbhojī śatavarṣakam | tato bhavecca cāṇḍālastrijanmani tataḥ śuciḥ

— he dwells in the Tear-Pit, made to consume it, for a hundred years. Thereafter he becomes an outcaste for three births, and after that becomes purified.

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.9.33.31)

करोति शठता तद्वन्नित्यं सुहृदि यो नरः । कुण्डं गात्रमलानां च स प्रयाति शताब्दकम्

karoti śaṭhatā tadvannityaṁ suhṛdi yo naraḥ | kuṇḍaṁ gātramalānāṁ ca sa prayāti śatābdakam

The man who continually practices deceit toward a friend, likewise, goes to the Pit of Bodily Filth for a hundred years.

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.9.33.32)

ततः स गार्दभीं योनिमवाप्नोति त्रिजन्मनि । त्रिजन्मनि च शार्गालीं ततः शुद्धो भवेद् ध्रुवम्

tataḥ sa gārdabhīṁ yonimavāpnoti trijanmani | trijanmani ca śārgālīṁ tataḥ śuddho bhaved dhruvam

Thereafter he obtains the birth of a donkey for three births, and the birth of a jackal for three births; after that he surely becomes purified.

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.9.33.33)

बधिरं यो हसत्येव निन्दत्येवाभिमानतः । स वसेत्कर्णविट्कुण्डे तद्भोजी शतवत्सरम्

badhiraṁ yo hasatyeva nindatyevābhimānataḥ | sa vasetkarṇaviṭkuṇḍe tadbhojī śatavatsaram

He who laughs at a deaf person, or reviles him out of arrogance, dwells in the Ear-Wax-Pit, made to consume it, for a hundred years.

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.9.33.34)

ततो भवेत्स बधिरो दरिद्रः सप्तजन्मसु । सप्तजन्मन्यङ्गहीनस्ततः शुद्धिं लभेद् ध्रुवम्

tato bhavetsa badhiro daridraḥ saptajanmasu | saptajanmanyaṅgahīnastataḥ śuddhiṁ labhed dhruvam

Thereafter he himself becomes deaf and poor for seven births, and maimed for another seven births. After that he surely attains purification.

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.9.33.35)

लोभात्स्वभरणार्थाय जीविनं हन्ति यो नरः । मज्जाकुण्डे वसेत्सोऽपि तद्भोजी लक्षवत्सरम्

lobhātsvabharaṇārthāya jīvinaṁ hanti yo naraḥ | majjākuṇḍe vasetso'pi tadbhojī lakṣavatsaram

The man who, out of greed, kills a living being merely to sustain himself, dwells in the Marrow-Pit, made to consume it, for a hundred thousand years.

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.9.33.36)

ततो भवेच्च शशको मीनश्च सप्तजन्मसु । त्रिजन्मनि वराहश्च कुक्कुटः सप्तजन्मसु

tato bhavecca śaśako mīnaśca saptajanmasu | trijanmani varāhaśca kukkuṭaḥ saptajanmasu

Thereafter he becomes a rabbit, and a fish for seven births; a boar for three births, and a rooster for seven births.

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.9.33.37)

एणादयश्च कर्मभ्यस्ततः शुद्धिं लभेद् ध्रुवम् । स्वकन्यापालनं कृत्वा विक्रीणाति च यो नरः

eṇādayaśca karmabhyastataḥ śuddhiṁ labhed dhruvam | svakanyāpālanaṁ kṛtvā vikrīṇāti ca yo naraḥ

According to his deeds, he also becomes a deer and the like; after that he surely attains purification. The man who raises his own daughter and then sells her —

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.9.33.38)

अर्थलोभान्महामूढो मांसकुण्डं प्रयाति सः । कन्यालोमप्रमाणाब्दं तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति

arthalobhānmahāmūḍho māṁsakuṇḍaṁ prayāti saḥ | kanyālomapramāṇābdaṁ tadbhojī tatra tiṣṭhati

— that great fool, out of greed for wealth, goes to the Flesh-Pit; for as many years as there are hairs on his daughter's body, he remains there, made to consume it.

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.9.33.39)

तस्य दण्डप्रहारं च कुर्वन्ति यमकिङ्कराः । मांसभारं मूर्ध्नि कृत्वा रक्तभारं लिहेत्क्षुधा

tasya daṇḍaprahāraṁ ca kurvanti yamakiṅkarāḥ | māṁsabhāraṁ mūrdhni kṛtvā raktabhāraṁ lihetkṣudhā

Yama's servants strike him with blows of the rod; a burden of flesh placed upon his head, he licks up a mass of blood out of hunger.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.9.33.40)

ततो हि भारते पापी कन्याविट्कृमिगो भवेत् । षष्टिवर्षसहस्राणि व्याधश्च सप्तजन्मसु

tato hi bhārate pāpī kanyāviṭkṛmigo bhavet | ṣaṣṭivarṣasahasrāṇi vyādhaśca saptajanmasu

Thereafter, that sinner in Bharata becomes a worm in his daughter's excrement for sixty thousand years, and a hunter for seven births.

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.9.33.41)

त्रिजन्मनि वराहश्च कुक्कुटः सप्तजन्मसु । मण्डूको हि जलौकाश्च सप्तजन्मसु भारते

trijanmani varāhaśca kukkuṭaḥ saptajanmasu | maṇḍūko hi jalaukāśca saptajanmasu bhārate

He becomes a boar for three births, a rooster for seven births, and a frog and a leech, each for seven births, in Bharata.

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.9.33.42)

सप्तजन्मसु काकश्च ततः शुद्धिं लभेद् ध्रुवम् । व्रतानामुपवासानां श्राद्धादीनां च सङ्गमे

saptajanmasu kākaśca tataḥ śuddhiṁ labhed dhruvam | vratānāmupavāsānāṁ śrāddhādīnāṁ ca saṅgame

A crow for seven births; after that he surely attains purification. Regarding one who, at the time of vows, fasts, shraddhas, and the like —

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.9.33.43)

करोति यः क्षौरकर्म सोऽशुचिः सर्वकर्मसु । स च तिष्ठति कुण्डे च नखादीनाञ्च सुन्दरि

karoti yaḥ kṣaurakarma so'śuciḥ sarvakarmasu | sa ca tiṣṭhati kuṇḍe ca nakhādīnāñca sundari

— who has himself shaved, breaking the rule, is impure for every rite thereafter. O beautiful one, he dwells in the pit of nail-clippings and the like.

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.9.33.44)

तद्दैवदिनमानाब्दं तद्भोजी दण्डताडितः । सकेशं पार्थिवं लिङ्गं यो वार्चयति भारते

taddaivadinamānābdaṁ tadbhojī daṇḍatāḍitaḥ | sakeśaṁ pārthivaṁ liṅgaṁ yo vārcayati bhārate

For as many years as there are such violated days, he is made to consume it there, beaten with the rod. He who, in Bharata, worships a clay linga with hair still upon it —

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.9.33.45)

स तिष्ठति केशकुण्डे मृद्रेणुमानवर्षकम् । तदन्ते यावनीं योनिं प्रयाति हरकोपतः

sa tiṣṭhati keśakuṇḍe mṛdreṇumānavarṣakam | tadante yāvanīṁ yoniṁ prayāti harakopataḥ

— dwells in the Hair-Pit for as many years as there are particles of that clay. At the end of that span, through Hara's anger, he takes birth as a Yavana.

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.9.33.46)

शताब्दाच्छुद्धिमाप्नोति राक्षसः स भवेद् ध्रुवम् । पितॄणां यो विष्णुपदे पिण्डं नैव ददाति च

śatābdācchuddhimāpnoti rākṣasaḥ sa bhaved dhruvam | pitṝṇāṁ yo viṣṇupade piṇḍaṁ naiva dadāti ca

After a hundred years he attains purification, though he first surely becomes a rakshasa. He who fails to offer the pinda to his ancestors at Vishnupada (Gaya) —

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.9.33.47)

स च तिष्ठत्यस्थिकुण्डे स्वलोमाब्दं महोल्बणे । ततः सुयोनिं सम्प्राप्य कुखञ्जः सप्तजन्मसु

sa ca tiṣṭhatyasthikuṇḍe svalomābdaṁ maholbaṇe | tataḥ suyoniṁ samprāpya kukhañjaḥ saptajanmasu

— dwells in the terrible Bone-Pit for as many years as there are hairs on his body. Then, attaining a good birth, he becomes lame for seven births.

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.9.33.48)

भवेन्महादरिद्रश्च ततः शुद्धो हि देहतः । यः सेवते महामूढो गुर्विणीं च स्वकामिनीम्

bhavenmahādaridraśca tataḥ śuddho hi dehataḥ | yaḥ sevate mahāmūḍho gurviṇīṁ ca svakāminīm

He becomes exceedingly poor; after that he becomes purified in body. The great fool who has intercourse with his own wife while she is pregnant —

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.9.33.49)

प्रतप्ते ताम्रकुण्डे च शतवर्षं स तिष्ठति । अवीरान्नं च यो भुङ्क्ते ऋतुस्नातान्नमेव च

pratapte tāmrakuṇḍe ca śatavarṣaṁ sa tiṣṭhati | avīrānnaṁ ca yo bhuṅkte ṛtusnātānnameva ca

— dwells in the burning Copper-Pit for a hundred years. He who eats food from a household without a male protector, or food offered by a woman fresh from her menstrual bathing —

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.9.33.50)

लोहकुण्डे शताब्दं च स च तिष्ठति तप्तके । स व्रजेद्रजकीं योनिं काकानां सप्तजन्मसु

lohakuṇḍe śatābdaṁ ca sa ca tiṣṭhati taptake | sa vrajedrajakīṁ yoniṁ kākānāṁ saptajanmasu

— dwells in the burning Iron-Pit for a hundred years. He takes birth as a washerman, and as crows, for seven births.

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.9.33.51)

महाव्रणी दरिद्रश्च ततः शुद्धी भवेन्नरः । यो हि चर्माक्तहस्तेन देवद्रव्यमुपस्मृशेत्

mahāvraṇī daridraśca tataḥ śuddhī bhavennaraḥ | yo hi carmāktahastena devadravyamupasmṛśet

He becomes afflicted with terrible sores, and poor; after that he becomes purified. He who touches an offering meant for the gods with a hand smeared with hide —

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.9.33.52)

शतवर्षप्रमाणं च चर्मकुण्डे स तिष्ठति । यः शूद्रेणाभ्यनुज्ञातो भुङ्क्ते शूद्रान्नमेव च

śatavarṣapramāṇaṁ ca carmakuṇḍe sa tiṣṭhati | yaḥ śūdreṇābhyanujñāto bhuṅkte śūdrānnameva ca

— dwells in the Hide-Pit for the span of a hundred years. He who, invited by a shudra, eats a shudra's food —

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.9.33.53)

स च तप्तसुराकुण्डे शताब्दं तिष्ठति द्विजः । ततो भवेच्छूद्रयाजी ब्राह्मणः सप्तजन्मसु

sa ca taptasurākuṇḍe śatābdaṁ tiṣṭhati dvijaḥ | tato bhavecchūdrayājī brāhmaṇaḥ saptajanmasu

— that twice-born dwells in the boiling-liquor Pit for a hundred years. Thereafter he becomes a brahmin who serves as priest to shudras, for seven births.

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.9.33.54)

शूद्रश्राद्धान्नभोजी च ततः शुद्धो भवेद्ध रुवम् । वाग्दुष्टः कटुको वाचा ताडयेत्स्वामिनं सदा

śūdraśrāddhānnabhojī ca tataḥ śuddho bhaveddha ruvam | vāgduṣṭaḥ kaṭuko vācā tāḍayetsvāminaṁ sadā

He becomes one who eats the shraddha-food of shudras; after that he surely becomes purified. The one who is foul and harsh of speech, and constantly torments his master with words —

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.9.33.55)

तीक्ष्णकण्टककुण्डे स तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति । ताडितो यमदूतेन दण्डेन च चतुर्गुणम्

tīkṣṇakaṇṭakakuṇḍe sa tadbhojī tatra tiṣṭhati | tāḍito yamadūtena daṇḍena ca caturguṇam

— dwells, made to endure it, in the Sharp-Thorn-Pit, beaten fourfold by Yama's messenger with the rod.

Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.9.33.56)

ततः उच्चैःश्रवाः सप्तजन्मस्वेव ततः शुचि । विषेण जीवनं हन्ति निर्दयो यो हि मानवः

tataḥ uccaiḥśravāḥ saptajanmasveva tataḥ śuci | viṣeṇa jīvanaṁ hanti nirdayo yo hi mānavaḥ

Thereafter he becomes a fine horse for seven births; after that he becomes purified. The merciless man who takes a life by means of poison —

Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.9.33.57)

विषकुण्डे च तद्भोजी सहस्राब्दं च तिष्ठति । ततो भवेन्नृघाती च व्रणी च शतजन्मसु

viṣakuṇḍe ca tadbhojī sahasrābdaṁ ca tiṣṭhati | tato bhavennṛghātī ca vraṇī ca śatajanmasu

— dwells in the Venom-Pit, made to consume it, for a thousand years. Thereafter he becomes a murderer, and one afflicted with sores, for a hundred births.

Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.9.33.58)

सप्तजन्मसु कुष्ठी च ततः शुद्धो भवेद् धुवम् । दण्डेन ताडयेद् गां हि वृषञ्च वृषवाहकः

saptajanmasu kuṣṭhī ca tataḥ śuddho bhaved dhuvam | daṇḍena tāḍayed gāṁ hi vṛṣañca vṛṣavāhakaḥ

He becomes a leper for seven births; after that he surely becomes purified. He who drives a bullock-cart and beats the cow or bull with a stick —

Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.9.33.59)

भृत्यद्वारा स्वतन्त्रो वा पुण्यक्षेत्रे च भारते । प्रतप्ते तैलकुण्डेऽग्नौ तिष्ठति स्म चतुर्युगम्

bhṛtyadvārā svatantro vā puṇyakṣetre ca bhārate | pratapte tailakuṇḍe'gnau tiṣṭhati sma caturyugam

— whether through a servant or by his own hand, in the sacred land of Bharata — he dwells in the burning Oil-Pit, in fire, for four yugas.

Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.9.33.60)

गवां लोमप्रमाणाब्दं वृषो भवति तत्परम् । कुन्तेन हन्ति यो जीवं वह्निलोहेन हेलया

gavāṁ lomapramāṇābdaṁ vṛṣo bhavati tatparam | kuntena hanti yo jīvaṁ vahnilohena helayā

Thereafter, for as many years as there are hairs upon cattle, he becomes a bull. He who, through carelessness, kills a living being with a spear or with heated iron —

Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.9.33.61)

कुन्तकुण्डे वसेत्सोऽपि वर्षाणामयुतं सति । ततः सुयोनिं सम्प्राप्य चोदरे व्याधिसंयुतः

kuntakuṇḍe vasetso'pi varṣāṇāmayutaṁ sati | tataḥ suyoniṁ samprāpya codare vyādhisaṁyutaḥ

— dwells in the Spear-Pit for ten thousand years. Then, attaining a good birth, he is afflicted with a disease of the belly —

Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.9.33.62)

जन्मनैकेन क्लेशेन ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः । यो भुङ्क्ते च वृथा मांसं मांसलोभी द्विजाधमः

janmanaikena kleśena tataḥ śuddho bhavennaraḥ | yo bhuṅkte ca vṛthā māṁsaṁ māṁsalobhī dvijādhamaḥ

— for a single birth, through that affliction; after that the man becomes purified. The basest of the twice-born, greedy for flesh, who eats meat needlessly —

Verse 63 (devibhagavatam.9.33.63)

हरेरनैवेद्यभोजी कृमिकुण्डं प्रयाति सः । स्वलोममानवर्षं च तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति

hareranaivedyabhojī kṛmikuṇḍaṁ prayāti saḥ | svalomamānavarṣaṁ ca tadbhojī tatra tiṣṭhati

— eating food that has not first been offered to Hari, goes to the Worm-Pit; for as many years as there are hairs upon his body, he remains there, made to consume it.

Verse 64 (devibhagavatam.9.33.64)

ततो भवेन्म्लेच्छजातिस्त्रिजन्मनि ततो द्विजः । ब्राह्मणः शूद्रयाजी च शूद्रश्राद्धान्नभोजकः

tato bhavenmlecchajātistrijanmani tato dvijaḥ | brāhmaṇaḥ śūdrayājī ca śūdraśrāddhānnabhojakaḥ

Thereafter he becomes a Mleccha for three births, and then a twice-born; a brahmin who serves as priest to shudras and eats their shraddha-food —

Verse 65 (devibhagavatam.9.33.65)

शूद्राणां शवदाही च पूयकुण्डे वसेद् ध्रुवम् । यावल्लोमप्रमाणाब्दं यमदण्डेन सुव्रते

śūdrāṇāṁ śavadāhī ca pūyakuṇḍe vased dhruvam | yāvallomapramāṇābdaṁ yamadaṇḍena suvrate

— and who cremates the corpses of shudras — surely dwells, O faithful one, in the Pus-Pit, for as many years as there are hairs upon his body, under Yama's rod.

Verse 66 (devibhagavatam.9.33.66)

ताडितो यमदूतेन तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति । ततो भारतमागत्य स शूद्रः सप्तजन्मसु

tāḍito yamadūtena tadbhojī tatra tiṣṭhati | tato bhāratamāgatya sa śūdraḥ saptajanmasu

Beaten by Yama's messenger, he remains there, made to consume it. Thereafter, coming to Bharata, he becomes a shudra for seven births —

Verse 67 (devibhagavatam.9.33.67)

महारोगी दरिद्रश्च बधिरो मूक एव च । कृष्णं पद्मं च के यस्य तं सर्पं हन्ति यो नरः

mahārogī daridraśca badhiro mūka eva ca | kṛṣṇaṁ padmaṁ ca ke yasya taṁ sarpaṁ hanti yo naraḥ

— greatly afflicted with disease, poor, deaf, and mute. The man who kills a snake marked with a black lotus upon its head —

Verse 68 (devibhagavatam.9.33.68)

स्वलोममानवर्षं च सर्पकुण्डं प्रयाति सः । सर्पेण भक्षितः सोऽथ यमदूतेन ताडितः

svalomamānavarṣaṁ ca sarpakuṇḍaṁ prayāti saḥ | sarpeṇa bhakṣitaḥ so'tha yamadūtena tāḍitaḥ

— goes to the Serpent-Pit for as many years as there are hairs upon his body, there devoured by serpents and beaten by Yama's messenger.

Verse 69 (devibhagavatam.9.33.69)

वसेच्च सर्पविड्भोजी ततः सर्पो भवेद् ध्रुवम् । ततो भवेन्मानवश्च स्वल्पायुर्दद्रुसंयुतः

vasecca sarpaviḍbhojī tataḥ sarpo bhaved dhruvam | tato bhavenmānavaśca svalpāyurdadrusaṁyutaḥ

He dwells there, eating serpents' excrement; thereafter he surely becomes a serpent himself. Then he becomes a man, short-lived and afflicted with a skin disease.

Verse 70 (devibhagavatam.9.33.70)

महाक्लेशेन तन्मृत्युः सर्पेण भक्षिताद् ध्रुवम् । विधिप्रदत्तजीव्यांश्च क्षुद्रजन्तूंश्च हन्ति यः

mahākleśena tanmṛtyuḥ sarpeṇa bhakṣitād dhruvam | vidhipradattajīvyāṁśca kṣudrajantūṁśca hanti yaḥ

His death comes amid great suffering, surely by being devoured by a serpent. He who kills small creatures whose life was ordained by fate —

Verse 71 (devibhagavatam.9.33.71)

स दंशमशयोः कुण्डे जन्तुमानाब्दमेव च । दिवानिशं भक्षितस्तैरनाहारश्च शब्दवान्

sa daṁśamaśayoḥ kuṇḍe jantumānābdameva ca | divāniśaṁ bhakṣitastairanāhāraśca śabdavān

— dwells in the pit of biting insects and mosquitoes for as many years as there are such creatures, devoured by them day and night, without food, crying out.

Verse 72 (devibhagavatam.9.33.72)

हस्तपादादिबद्धश्च यमदूतेन ताडितः । ततो भवेत्क्षुद्रजन्तुर्जातिश्च यावनी भवेत्

hastapādādibaddhaśca yamadūtena tāḍitaḥ | tato bhavetkṣudrajanturjātiśca yāvanī bhavet

Bound hand and foot, beaten by Yama's messenger — thereafter he becomes a small creature, and then takes birth among the Yavanas.

Verse 73 (devibhagavatam.9.33.73)

ततो भवेन्मानवश्च सोऽङ्गहीनस्ततः शुचिः । यो मूढो मधुमश्नाति हत्वा च मधुमक्षिकाः

tato bhavenmānavaśca so'ṅgahīnastataḥ śuciḥ | yo mūḍho madhumaśnāti hatvā ca madhumakṣikāḥ

Then he becomes a man, maimed; after that he becomes purified. The fool who eats honey after killing the honeybees —

Verse 74 (devibhagavatam.9.33.74)

स एव गारले कुण्डे जीवमानाब्दकं वसेत् । भक्षितो गरलैर्दग्धो यमदूतेन ताडितः

sa eva gārale kuṇḍe jīvamānābdakaṁ vaset | bhakṣito garalairdagdho yamadūtena tāḍitaḥ

— he dwells in the Venom-Pit for as many years as there were those living creatures, devoured by venomous things, burned, and beaten by Yama's messenger.

Verse 75 (devibhagavatam.9.33.75)

ततो हि मक्षिकाजातिस्ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः । दण्डं करोत्यदण्ड्ये च विप्रे दण्डं करोति च

tato hi makṣikājātistataḥ śuddho bhavennaraḥ | daṇḍaṁ karotyadaṇḍye ca vipre daṇḍaṁ karoti ca

Thereafter he takes birth as a bee; after that the man becomes purified. He who punishes one undeserving of punishment, or who punishes a brahmin —

Verse 76 (devibhagavatam.9.33.76)

स कुण्डं वज्रदंष्ट्राणां कीटानां याति सत्वरम् । स तल्लोमप्रमाणाब्दं तत्र तिष्ठत्यहर्निशम्

sa kuṇḍaṁ vajradaṁṣṭrāṇāṁ kīṭānāṁ yāti satvaram | sa tallomapramāṇābdaṁ tatra tiṣṭhatyaharniśam

— he goes swiftly to the pit of fang-bearing insects; for as many years as there are hairs upon his body, he dwells there day and night.

Verse 77 (devibhagavatam.9.33.77)

शब्दकृद्भक्षितस्तैस्तु यमदूतेन ताडितः । करोति रोदनं भद्रे हाहाकारं क्षणे क्षणे

śabdakṛdbhakṣitastaistu yamadūtena tāḍitaḥ | karoti rodanaṁ bhadre hāhākāraṁ kṣaṇe kṣaṇe

Crying out, devoured by them, and beaten by Yama's messenger, O gracious one, he weeps and wails in anguish, moment by moment.

Verse 78 (devibhagavatam.9.33.78)

पुनः सूकरयोनौ च जायते सप्तजन्मसु । त्रिजन्मनि काकयोनौ ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः

punaḥ sūkarayonau ca jāyate saptajanmasu | trijanmani kākayonau tataḥ śuddho bhavennaraḥ

Then he is born a pig for seven births, and a crow for three births; after that the man becomes purified.

Verse 79 (devibhagavatam.9.33.79)

अर्थलोभेन यो मूढः प्रजादण्डं करोति सः । वृश्चिकानां च कुण्डं च तल्लोमाब्दं वसेद् ध्रुवम्

arthalobhena yo mūḍhaḥ prajādaṇḍaṁ karoti saḥ | vṛścikānāṁ ca kuṇḍaṁ ca tallomābdaṁ vased dhruvam

The fool who, out of greed for wealth, unjustly punishes the innocent surely dwells in the pit of scorpions for as many years as there are hairs upon his body.

Verse 80 (devibhagavatam.9.33.80)

ततो वृश्चिकजातिश्च सप्तजन्मसु भारते । ततो नरश्चाङ्गहीनो व्याधिशुद्धो भवेद् ध्रुवम्

tato vṛścikajātiśca saptajanmasu bhārate | tato naraścāṅgahīno vyādhiśuddho bhaved dhruvam

Thereafter he takes birth as a scorpion for seven births in Bharata; then he becomes a maimed man, and surely becomes purified through disease.

Verse 81 (devibhagavatam.9.33.81)

ब्राह्मणः शस्त्रधारी यो ह्यन्येषां धावको भवेत् । सन्ध्याहीनश्च यो विप्रो हरिभक्तिविहीनकः

brāhmaṇaḥ śastradhārī yo hyanyeṣāṁ dhāvako bhavet | sandhyāhīnaśca yo vipro haribhaktivihīnakaḥ

The brahmin who takes up arms and becomes a courier in another's service; the twice-born devoid of the sandhya and of devotion to Hari —

Verse 82 (devibhagavatam.9.33.82)

स तिष्ठति स्वलोमाब्दं कुण्डेषु च शरादिषु । विद्धः शरादिभिः शश्वत्ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः

sa tiṣṭhati svalomābdaṁ kuṇḍeṣu ca śarādiṣu | viddhaḥ śarādibhiḥ śaśvattataḥ śuddho bhavennaraḥ

— dwells, for as many years as there are hairs upon his body, in the pits of arrows and the like, ceaselessly pierced; after that the man becomes purified.

Verse 83 (devibhagavatam.9.33.83)

कारागारे सान्धकारे प्रणिहन्ति प्रजाश्च यः । प्रमत्तः स्वस्य दोषेण गोलकुण्डं प्रयाति सः

kārāgāre sāndhakāre praṇihanti prajāśca yaḥ | pramattaḥ svasya doṣeṇa golakuṇḍaṁ prayāti saḥ

He who, through negligence and his own fault, causes people to die in a dark prison goes to the Ball-Pit.

Verse 84 (devibhagavatam.9.33.84)

स पङ्कतप्ततोयाक्तं सान्धकारं भयङ्करम् । तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रैश्च कीटैश्च संयुक्तं गोलकुण्डकम्

sa paṅkataptatoyāktaṁ sāndhakāraṁ bhayaṅkaram | tīkṣṇadaṁṣṭraiśca kīṭaiśca saṁyuktaṁ golakuṇḍakam

That Ball-Pit is filled with mud and scalding water, dark, terrifying, and swarming with sharp-fanged insects.

Verse 85 (devibhagavatam.9.33.85)

कीटैर्विद्धो वसेत्तत्र प्रजालोमाब्दमेव च । ततो भवेत्प्रजाभृत्यस्ततः शुद्धो भवेत्क्रमात्

kīṭairviddho vasettatra prajālomābdameva ca | tato bhavetprajābhṛtyastataḥ śuddho bhavetkramāt

Pierced by those insects, he dwells there for as many years as there are hairs upon those people. Thereafter he becomes a servant of the people; then, in due course, he becomes purified.

Verse 86 (devibhagavatam.9.33.86)

सरोवरादुत्थितांश्च नक्रादीन्हन्ति यो नरः । नक्रकण्टकमानाब्दं नक्रकुण्डं प्रयाति सः

sarovarādutthitāṁśca nakrādīnhanti yo naraḥ | nakrakaṇṭakamānābdaṁ nakrakuṇḍaṁ prayāti saḥ

The man who kills crocodiles and the like as they emerge from a lake goes to the Crocodile-Pit for as many years as there are scales upon the crocodile.

Verse 87 (devibhagavatam.9.33.87)

ततो नक्रादिजातीयो भवेन्नक्रादिषु ध्रुवम् । ततः सद्यो विशुद्धो हि दण्डेनैव पुनः पुनः

tato nakrādijātīyo bhavennakrādiṣu dhruvam | tataḥ sadyo viśuddho hi daṇḍenaiva punaḥ punaḥ

Thereafter he certainly takes birth among crocodiles and the like. After that, through repeated punishment, he becomes at once fully purified.

Verse 88 (devibhagavatam.9.33.88)

वक्षः श्रोणीस्तनास्यञ्च यः पश्यति परस्त्रियाः । कामेन कामुको यो हि पुण्यक्षेत्रे च भारते

vakṣaḥ śroṇīstanāsyañca yaḥ paśyati parastriyāḥ | kāmena kāmuko yo hi puṇyakṣetre ca bhārate

He who, in lust, gazes upon the breast, hips, and face of another man's wife, that lecherous man, in the sacred land of Bharata —

Verse 89 (devibhagavatam.9.33.89)

स वसेत्काककुण्डे च काकैः सञ्चूर्णलोचनः । ततः स्वलोममानाब्दं भवेद्दग्धस्त्रिजन्मनि

sa vasetkākakuṇḍe ca kākaiḥ sañcūrṇalocanaḥ | tataḥ svalomamānābdaṁ bhaveddagdhastrijanmani

— dwells in the Crow-Pit, his eyes pecked to shreds by crows. Then, for as many years as there are hairs upon his body, he is scorched for three births.

Verse 90 (devibhagavatam.9.33.90)

स्वर्णस्तेयी च यो मूढो भारते सुरविप्रयोः । स च मन्थानकुण्डे वै स्वलोमाब्दं वसेद् ध्रुवम्

svarṇasteyī ca yo mūḍho bhārate suraviprayoḥ | sa ca manthānakuṇḍe vai svalomābdaṁ vased dhruvam

The fool who steals gold belonging to the gods or brahmins in Bharata surely dwells in the Churning-Pit for as many years as there are hairs upon his body.

Verse 91 (devibhagavatam.9.33.91)

ताडितो यमदूतेन मन्थानैश्छन्नलोचनः । तद्विड्भोजी च तत्रैव ततश्चान्धस्त्रिजन्मनि

tāḍito yamadūtena manthānaiśchannalocanaḥ | tadviḍbhojī ca tatraiva tataścāndhastrijanmani

Beaten by Yama's messenger, his eyes covered over by churning-rods; there made to eat filth, he then becomes blind for three births.

Verse 92 (devibhagavatam.9.33.92)

सप्तजन्म दरिद्रश्च महाक्रूरश्च पातकी । भारते स्वर्णकारश्च स च स्वर्णवणिक् ततः

saptajanma daridraśca mahākrūraśca pātakī | bhārate svarṇakāraśca sa ca svarṇavaṇik tataḥ

For seven births he is poor, exceedingly cruel, and sinful. In Bharata he becomes a goldsmith, and then a gold merchant.

Verse 93 (devibhagavatam.9.33.93)

यो भारते ताम्रचौरो लोहचौरश्च सुन्दरि । स च स्वलोममानाब्दं बीजकुण्डं प्रयाति सः

yo bhārate tāmracauro lohacauraśca sundari | sa ca svalomamānābdaṁ bījakuṇḍaṁ prayāti saḥ

O beautiful one, he who steals copper or iron in Bharata goes to the Seed-Pit for as many years as there are hairs upon his body.

Verse 94 (devibhagavatam.9.33.94)

तत्रैव बीजविड्भोजी बीजैश्च छन्नलोचनः । ताडितो यमदूतेन ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः

tatraiva bījaviḍbhojī bījaiśca channalocanaḥ | tāḍito yamadūtena tataḥ śuddho bhavennaraḥ

There, eating the filth of seeds, his eyes covered over by seeds, beaten by Yama's messenger; after that the man becomes purified.

Verse 95 (devibhagavatam.9.33.95)

भारते देवचौरश्च देवद्रव्यापहारकः । स दुस्तरे वज्रकुण्डे स्वलोमाब्दं वसेद् ध्रुवम्

bhārate devacauraśca devadravyāpahārakaḥ | sa dustare vajrakuṇḍe svalomābdaṁ vased dhruvam

He who steals from a temple in Bharata, plundering the property of the gods, surely dwells in the impassable Thunderbolt-Pit for as many years as there are hairs upon his body.

Verse 96 (devibhagavatam.9.33.96)

देहदग्धोऽपि तद्वज्रैरनाहारश्च शब्दकृत् । ताडितो यमदूतैश्च ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः

dehadagdho'pi tadvajrairanāhāraśca śabdakṛt | tāḍito yamadūtaiśca tataḥ śuddho bhavennaraḥ

His body burned by those thunderbolts, without food, crying out, beaten by Yama's messengers; after that the man becomes purified.

Verse 97 (devibhagavatam.9.33.97)

रौप्यगव्यांशुकानां च यश्चौरः सुरविप्रयोः । तप्तपाषाणकुण्डेच स्वलोमाब्दं वसेद् ध्रुवम्

raupyagavyāṁśukānāṁ ca yaścauraḥ suraviprayoḥ | taptapāṣāṇakuṇḍeca svalomābdaṁ vased dhruvam

He who steals silver, cattle, or cloth belonging to the gods or brahmins surely dwells in the burning-stones Pit for as many years as there are hairs upon his body.

Verse 98 (devibhagavatam.9.33.98)

त्रिजन्मनि च कंसोऽपि श्वेतरूपस्त्रिजन्मनि । जन्मैकं श्वेतचिह्नश्च ततोऽन्ये श्वेतपक्षिणः

trijanmani ca kaṁso'pi śvetarūpastrijanmani | janmaikaṁ śvetacihnaśca tato'nye śvetapakṣiṇaḥ

For three births he becomes even a Kamsa-like tyrant; for three births he bears a white form; for one birth a white marking; and thereafter he becomes other white-feathered birds.

Verse 99 (devibhagavatam.9.33.99)

ततो रक्तविकारी च शूली वै मानवो भवेत् । सप्तजन्मसु चाल्पायुस्ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः

tato raktavikārī ca śūlī vai mānavo bhavet | saptajanmasu cālpāyustataḥ śuddho bhavennaraḥ

Thereafter he becomes a man afflicted with blood disorders and stabbing pain, short-lived for seven births; after that the man becomes purified.

Verse 100 (devibhagavatam.9.33.100)

रैतं कांस्यमयं पात्रं यो हरेद्देवविप्रयोः । तीक्ष्णपाषाणकुण्डे च स्वलोमाब्दं वसेन्नरः

raitaṁ kāṁsyamayaṁ pātraṁ yo hareddevaviprayoḥ | tīkṣṇapāṣāṇakuṇḍe ca svalomābdaṁ vasennaraḥ

He who steals a bell-metal vessel belonging to the gods or brahmins dwells in the sharp-stones Pit for as many years as there are hairs upon his body.

Verse 101 (devibhagavatam.9.33.101)

स भवेदश्वजातिश्च भारते सप्तजन्मसु । ततोऽधिकाङ्गजातिश्च पादरोगी ततः शुचिः

sa bhavedaśvajātiśca bhārate saptajanmasu | tato'dhikāṅgajātiśca pādarogī tataḥ śuciḥ

He becomes a horse for seven births in Bharata. Then he is born with extra limbs, and afflicted with disease of the feet; after that he becomes purified.

Verse 102 (devibhagavatam.9.33.102)

पुंश्चल्यन्नं च यो भद्रे पुंश्चलीजीव्यजीविनः । स्वलोममानवर्षं च लालाकुण्डे वसेद् ध्रुवम्

puṁścalyannaṁ ca yo bhadre puṁścalījīvyajīvinaḥ | svalomamānavarṣaṁ ca lālākuṇḍe vased dhruvam

O gracious one, he who eats the food of a promiscuous woman, or lives off her earnings, surely dwells in the Saliva-Pit for as many years as there are hairs upon his body.

Verse 103 (devibhagavatam.9.33.103)

ताडितो यमदूतेन तद्भोजी तत्र दुःखितः । ततश्चक्षुःशूलरोगी ततः शुद्धः क्रमेण सः

tāḍito yamadūtena tadbhojī tatra duḥkhitaḥ | tataścakṣuḥśūlarogī tataḥ śuddhaḥ krameṇa saḥ

Beaten by Yama's messenger, sorrowfully made to consume it there; thereafter he suffers a piercing eye-disease; after that he becomes purified in due course.

Verse 104 (devibhagavatam.9.33.104)

म्लेच्छसेवी मसीजीवी यो विप्रो भारते भुवि । वसेत्स्वलोममानाब्दं मसीकुण्डे स दुःखभाक्

mlecchasevī masījīvī yo vipro bhārate bhuvi | vasetsvalomamānābdaṁ masīkuṇḍe sa duḥkhabhāk

The brahmin in Bharata who serves Mlecchas, or earns his living by soot and ink, dwells sorrowfully in the Soot-Pit for as many years as there are hairs upon his body.

Verse 105 (devibhagavatam.9.33.105)

ताडितो यमदूतेन तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति । ततस्त्रिजन्मनि भवेत्कृष्णवर्णः पशुः सति

tāḍito yamadūtena tadbhojī tatra tiṣṭhati | tatastrijanmani bhavetkṛṣṇavarṇaḥ paśuḥ sati

Beaten by Yama's messenger, he remains there, made to consume it. Thereafter, O virtuous one, he becomes a black-colored beast for three births.

Verse 106 (devibhagavatam.9.33.106)

त्रिजन्मनि भवेच्छागः कृष्णवर्णस्त्रिजन्मनि । ततः स तालवृक्षश्च ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः

trijanmani bhavecchāgaḥ kṛṣṇavarṇastrijanmani | tataḥ sa tālavṛkṣaśca tataḥ śuddho bhavennaraḥ

For three births he becomes a black goat; then he becomes a palm tree; after that the man becomes purified.

Verse 107 (devibhagavatam.9.33.107)

धान्यादिसस्यं ताम्बूलं यो हरेत्सुरविप्रयोः । आसनं च तथा तल्पं चूर्णकुण्डे प्रयाति सः

dhānyādisasyaṁ tāmbūlaṁ yo haretsuraviprayoḥ | āsanaṁ ca tathā talpaṁ cūrṇakuṇḍe prayāti saḥ

He who steals grain, crops, or betel belonging to the gods or brahmins, or their seat or bed, goes to the Powder-Pit.

Verse 108 (devibhagavatam.9.33.108)

शताब्दं तत्र निवसेद्यमदूतेन ताडितः । ततो भवेन्मेषजातिः कुक्कुटश्च त्रिजन्मनि

śatābdaṁ tatra nivasedyamadūtena tāḍitaḥ | tato bhavenmeṣajātiḥ kukkuṭaśca trijanmani

For a hundred years he dwells there, beaten by Yama's messenger. Thereafter he becomes a sheep, and a rooster, for three births.

Verse 109 (devibhagavatam.9.33.109)

ततो भवेद्वानरश्च कासव्याधियुतो भुवि । वंशहीनो दरिद्रश्च स्वल्पायुश्च ततः शुचिः

tato bhavedvānaraśca kāsavyādhiyuto bhuvi | vaṁśahīno daridraśca svalpāyuśca tataḥ śuciḥ

Then he becomes a monkey, afflicted with a coughing disease upon the earth; without lineage, poor, and short-lived; after that he becomes purified.

Verse 110 (devibhagavatam.9.33.110)

करोति चक्रं विप्राणां हृत्वा द्रव्यं च यो जनः । स वसेच्चक्रकुण्डे च शताब्दं दण्डताडितः

karoti cakraṁ viprāṇāṁ hṛtvā dravyaṁ ca yo janaḥ | sa vaseccakrakuṇḍe ca śatābdaṁ daṇḍatāḍitaḥ

The man who steals a brahmin's property and subjects him to torture on the wheel dwells in the Wheel-Pit for a hundred years, beaten with the rod.

Verse 111 (devibhagavatam.9.33.111)

ततो भवेन्मानवश्च तैलकारस्त्रिजन्मनि । व्याधियुक्तो भवेद्रोगी वंशहीनस्ततः शुचिः

tato bhavenmānavaśca tailakārastrijanmani | vyādhiyukto bhavedrogī vaṁśahīnastataḥ śuciḥ

Thereafter he becomes an oil-presser for three births; diseased, afflicted, and without lineage; after that he becomes purified.

Verse 112 (devibhagavatam.9.33.112)

गोधनेषु च विप्रेषु करोति वक्रतां पुमान् । प्रयाति वक्रकुण्डं स तिष्ठेद्युगशतं सति

godhaneṣu ca vipreṣu karoti vakratāṁ pumān | prayāti vakrakuṇḍaṁ sa tiṣṭhedyugaśataṁ sati

The man who practices deceit regarding cattle-wealth and brahmins goes to the Crooked-Pit, and dwells there for a hundred yugas.

Verse 113 (devibhagavatam.9.33.113)

ततो भवेत्स वक्राङ्गो हीनाङ्गः सप्तजन्मनि । दरिद्रो वंशहीनश्च भार्याहीनस्ततः शुचिः

tato bhavetsa vakrāṅgo hīnāṅgaḥ saptajanmani | daridro vaṁśahīnaśca bhāryāhīnastataḥ śuciḥ

Thereafter he becomes crooked-limbed and maimed for seven births; poor, without lineage, and without a wife; after that he becomes purified.

Verse 114 (devibhagavatam.9.33.114)

ततो भवेद् गृध्रजन्मा त्रिजन्मनि च सूकरः । त्रिजन्मनि बिडालश्च मयूरश्च त्रिजन्मनि

tato bhaved gṛdhrajanmā trijanmani ca sūkaraḥ | trijanmani biḍālaśca mayūraśca trijanmani

Then he takes birth as a vulture, and as a pig for three births; a cat for three births, and a peacock for three births.

Verse 115 (devibhagavatam.9.33.115)

निषिद्धं कूर्ममांसं च ब्राह्मणो यो हि भक्षति । कूर्मकुण्डे वसेत्सोऽपि शताब्दं कूर्मभक्षितः

niṣiddhaṁ kūrmamāṁsaṁ ca brāhmaṇo yo hi bhakṣati | kūrmakuṇḍe vasetso'pi śatābdaṁ kūrmabhakṣitaḥ

The brahmin who eats the forbidden flesh of a tortoise dwells in the Tortoise-Pit for a hundred years, devoured by tortoises there.

Verse 116 (devibhagavatam.9.33.116)

ततो भवेत्कूर्मजन्मा त्रिजन्मनि च सूकरः । त्रिजन्मनि बिडालश्च मयूरश्च ततः शुचिः

tato bhavetkūrmajanmā trijanmani ca sūkaraḥ | trijanmani biḍālaśca mayūraśca tataḥ śuciḥ

Thereafter he takes birth as a tortoise, and as a pig for three births; a cat for three births, and a peacock; after that he becomes purified.

Verse 117 (devibhagavatam.9.33.117)

घृतं तैलादिकं चैव यो हरेत्सुरविप्रयोः । स याति ज्वालाकुण्डं च भस्मकुण्डं च पातकी

ghṛtaṁ tailādikaṁ caiva yo haretsuraviprayoḥ | sa yāti jvālākuṇḍaṁ ca bhasmakuṇḍaṁ ca pātakī

He who steals ghee, oil, and the like belonging to the gods or brahmins — that sinner goes to the Flame-Pit and to the Ash-Pit.

Verse 118 (devibhagavatam.9.33.118)

तत्र स्थित्वा शताब्दं च स भवेत्तैलपाचितः । सप्तजन्मनि मत्स्यश्च मूषकश्च ततः शुचिः

tatra sthitvā śatābdaṁ ca sa bhavettailapācitaḥ | saptajanmani matsyaśca mūṣakaśca tataḥ śuciḥ

Having remained there for a hundred years, he is cooked in oil. He becomes a fish for seven births, and a mouse; after that he becomes purified.

Verse 119 (devibhagavatam.9.33.119)

सुगन्धितैलं धात्रीं वा गन्धद्रव्यान्यदेव वा । भारते पुण्यवर्षे च यो हरेत्सुरविप्रयोः

sugandhitailaṁ dhātrīṁ vā gandhadravyānyadeva vā | bhārate puṇyavarṣe ca yo haretsuraviprayoḥ

He who, in the sacred land of Bharata, steals fragrant oil, amla, or other perfumed substances belonging to the gods or brahmins —

Verse 120 (devibhagavatam.9.33.120)

स वसेद्दग्धकुण्डे च भवेद्दग्धो दिवानिशम् । स्वलोममानवर्षं च ततो दुर्गन्धिको भवेत्

sa vaseddagdhakuṇḍe ca bhaveddagdho divāniśam | svalomamānavarṣaṁ ca tato durgandhiko bhavet

— dwells in the Burnt-Pit, scorched day and night, for as many years as there are hairs upon his body; thereafter he becomes foul-smelling.

Verse 121 (devibhagavatam.9.33.121)

दुर्गन्धिकः सप्तजन्म मृगनाभिस्त्रिजन्मनि । सप्तजन्मसु मन्थानस्ततो हि मानवो भवेत्

durgandhikaḥ saptajanma mṛganābhistrijanmani | saptajanmasu manthānastato hi mānavo bhavet

He remains foul-smelling for seven births, a musk-deer for three births, and bound to the oil-mill for seven births; after that he becomes a man once more.

Verse 122 (devibhagavatam.9.33.122)

बलेनैव छलेनैव हिंसारूपेण वा सति । बलिष्ठश्च हरेद्भूमिं भारते परपैतृकीम्

balenaiva chalenaiva hiṁsārūpeṇa vā sati | baliṣṭhaśca haredbhūmiṁ bhārate parapaitṛkīm

O virtuous one, the powerful man who, by force, deceit, or violence, seizes another's ancestral land in Bharata —

Verse 123 (devibhagavatam.9.33.123)

स वसेत्तप्तसूचिं च भवेत्तापी दिवानिशम् । तप्ततैले यथा जीवो दग्धो भवति सन्ततम्

sa vasettaptasūciṁ ca bhavettāpī divāniśam | taptataile yathā jīvo dagdho bhavati santatam

— dwells in the Hot-Needle Pit, tormented day and night; just as a living being, cast in boiling oil, is continually burned.

Verse 124 (devibhagavatam.9.33.124)

भस्मसान्न भवत्येव भोगे देही न नश्यति । सप्तमन्वन्तरं पापी सन्तप्तस्तत्र तिष्ठति

bhasmasānna bhavatyeva bhoge dehī na naśyati | saptamanvantaraṁ pāpī santaptastatra tiṣṭhati

He is not reduced to ashes; even while undergoing this torment, the embodied soul does not perish. That sinner remains there, tormented, for seven Manvantaras.

Verse 125 (devibhagavatam.9.33.125)

शब्दं करोत्यनाहारो यमदूतेन ताडितः । षष्टिवर्षसहस्राणि विट्कृमिश्च भवेत्ततः

śabdaṁ karotyanāhāro yamadūtena tāḍitaḥ | ṣaṣṭivarṣasahasrāṇi viṭkṛmiśca bhavettataḥ

He cries out, without food, beaten by Yama's messenger. Thereafter he becomes a worm in excrement for sixty thousand years.

Verse 126 (devibhagavatam.9.33.126)

ततो भवेद्भूमिहीनो दरिद्रश्च ततः शुचिः । ततः स्वयोनिं सम्प्राप्य शुभं कर्माचरेत्पुनः

tato bhavedbhūmihīno daridraśca tataḥ śuciḥ | tataḥ svayoniṁ samprāpya śubhaṁ karmācaretpunaḥ

Thereafter he becomes landless and poor; after that he becomes purified. Then, attaining human birth once more, he may again perform good deeds.
