The twice-born who eats food from a household without a male protector, or food from one who lives by prostitution, or who neglects the threefold sandhya, incurs the sin of killing a cow.

Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.9.34.59)

Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.9.34.62)

Verse 63 (devibhagavatam.9.34.63)

śaśvannāstīti yo vādī mithyāvādī pratārakaḥ | devadveṣī gurudveṣī sa gohatyāṁ labhed dhruvam

He who constantly argues "there is no God," the liar and the deceiver, he who hates the gods and hates his guru, surely incurs the sin of killing a cow.

Verse 65 (devibhagavatam.9.34.65)

devatāpratimāṁ dṛṣṭvā guruṁ vā brāhmaṇaṁ sati | sambhramānna namedyo hi sa gohatyā labhed dhruvam

He who, seeing the image of a deity, or his guru, or a brahmin, fails to bow with respect, surely incurs the sin of killing a cow.

Verse 66 (devibhagavatam.9.34.66)

The twice-born who, out of anger, withholds his blessing from one who bows before him, or withholds learning from a seeker of learning, surely incurs the sin of killing a cow.

Verse 67 (devibhagavatam.9.34.67)

gohatyā viprahatyā ca kathitā cātideśikī | gamyāṁ striyaṁ nṛṇāmeva nibodha kathayāmi te

The offenses equivalent to killing a cow and killing a brahmin have now been told. Now learn who is a permissible woman for men — I shall tell you.

Verse 68 (devibhagavatam.9.34.68)

svastrī gamyā ca sarveṣāmiti vedānuśāsanam | agamyā ca tadanyā yā ceti vedavido viduḥ

One's own wife is permissible for all — this is the ordinance of the Veda. Any other woman besides her is forbidden — so the knowers of the Veda declare.

Verse 69 (devibhagavatam.9.34.69)

sāmānyaṁ kathitaṁ sarvaṁ viśeṣaṁ śṛṇu sundari | atyagamyā hi yā yāśca nibodha kathayāmi tāḥ

The general rule has now all been told; hear the particulars, O beautiful one. Learn who are the especially forbidden women — I shall tell you.

Verse 70 (devibhagavatam.9.34.70)

śūdrāṇāṁ viprapatnī ca viprāṇāṁ śūdrakāminī | atyagamyā ca nindyā ca loke vede pativrate

O faithful wife, a brahmin's wife is, for shudras, utterly forbidden and condemned in both this world and the Veda; and a shudra woman is likewise forbidden for brahmins.

Verse 71 (devibhagavatam.9.34.71)

śūdraśca brāhmaṇīṁ gatvā brahmahatyāśataṁ labhet | tatsamaṁ brāhmaṇī cāpi kumbhīpākaṁ labhed dhruvam

A shudra who approaches a brahmin woman incurs a hundred sins equivalent to killing a brahmin; and the brahmin woman likewise surely earns Kumbhipaka in equal measure.

Verse 72 (devibhagavatam.9.34.72)

śūdrāṇāṁ viprapatnī ca viprāṇāṁ śūdrakāminī | yadi śūdrā vrajedvipro vṛṣalīpatireva saḥ

A brahmin's wife is forbidden to shudras, and a shudra woman to brahmins. If a brahmin goes to a shudra woman, he becomes precisely what is called "husband of a shudra woman."

Verse 73 (devibhagavatam.9.34.73)

sa bhraṣṭo viprajāteśca cāṇḍālātso'dhamaḥ smṛtaḥ | viṣṭhāsamaśca tatpiṇḍo mūtraṁ tasya ca tarpaṇam

He falls from the brahmin caste, and is declared to be more degraded than a chandala. His pinda-offering is deemed equal to excrement, and his water-offering equal to urine.

Verse 74 (devibhagavatam.9.34.74)

na pitṝṇāṁ surāṇāṁ ca taddattamupatiṣṭhati | koṭijanmārjitaṁ puṇyaṁ tasyārcāttapasārjitam

Whatever is given by him does not reach the ancestors or the gods. Whatever merit he earned across a crore births, through worship and austerity —

Verse 75 (devibhagavatam.9.34.75)

dvijasya vṛṣalīlobhānnaśyatyeva na saṁśayaḥ | brāhmaṇaśca surāpītirviḍbhojī vṛṣalīpatiḥ

— is surely destroyed by that twice-born's lust for a shudra woman, without doubt. The brahmin who habitually drinks liquor, eats filth, or has taken a shudra wife —

Verse 76 (devibhagavatam.9.34.76)

taptamudrādagdhadehastaptaśūlāṅkitastathā | harivāsarabhojī ca kumbhīpākaṁ vrajed dvijaḥ

— his body branded with a burning seal, likewise marked by a heated spike; the twice-born who eats on the day of Hari (Ekadashi) goes to Kumbhipaka.

Verse 77 (devibhagavatam.9.34.77)

gurupatnīṁ rājapatnīṁ sapatnīṁ mātaraṁ dhruvam | sutāṁ putravadhūṁ śvaśrūṁ sagarbhāṁ bhaginīṁ satīm

(the list of forbidden women continues:) the guru's wife, the king's wife, a co-wife, one's own mother; one's daughter, daughter-in-law, mother-in-law, a pregnant woman, one's virtuous sister;

Verse 78 (devibhagavatam.9.34.78)

sahodarabhrātṛjāyāṁ mātulānīṁ pituḥ prasūm | mātuḥ prasūṁ tatsvasāraṁ bhaginīṁ bhrātṛkanyakām

— one's own brother's wife, one's maternal uncle's wife, one's paternal grandmother; one's maternal grandmother, her sister, one's maternal aunt, one's brother's daughter;

Verse 79 (devibhagavatam.9.34.79)

śiṣyāṁ śiṣyasya patnīṁ ca bhāgineyasya kāminīm | bhrātuḥ putrapriyāṁ caivātyagamyā āha padmajaḥ

— one's female student, one's disciple's wife, one's nephew's wife, and the beloved of one's nephew — all these too the Lotus-Born Brahma declares utterly forbidden.

Verse 80 (devibhagavatam.9.34.80)

etāḥ kāmena kāntā yo vrajedvai mānavādhamaḥ | sa mātṛgāmī vedeṣu brahmahatyāśataṁ vrajet

That basest of men who, in lust, approaches any of these women is declared in the Vedas to be as one who violates his own mother; he incurs a hundredfold the sin of killing a brahmin.

Verse 81 (devibhagavatam.9.34.81)

akarmārho'pyasaṁspṛśyo loke vede ca ninditaḥ | sa yāti kumbhīpāke ca mahāpāpī suduṣkare

He becomes unfit for any rite, untouchable, condemned in this world and in the Veda; that great sinner goes to Kumbhipaka, so hard to endure.

Verse 82 (devibhagavatam.9.34.82)

karotyaśuddhāṁ sandhyāṁ vā na sandhyāṁ vā karoti ca | trisandhyaṁ varjayedyo vā sandhyāhīnaśca sa dvijaḥ

He who performs the sandhya impurely, or does not perform it at all, or omits the threefold sandhya — that twice-born is what is meant by "one devoid of the sandhya."

Verse 83 (devibhagavatam.9.34.83)

vaiṣṇavaṁ ca tathā śaivaṁ śāktaṁ sauraṁ ca gāṇapam | yo'haṅkārānna gṛhṇāti mantraṁ so'dīkṣitaḥ smṛtaḥ

He who, out of pride, does not receive a mantra — whether Vaishnava, Shaiva, Shakta, Saura, or Ganapatya — is declared "uninitiated."

Verse 84 (devibhagavatam.9.34.84)

pravāhamavadhiṁ kṛtvā yāvaddhastacatuṣṭayam | tatra nārāyaṇaḥ svāmī gaṅgāgarbhāntare vaset

(Regarding the boundary of a Narayana-kshetra:) taking the river's current as the boundary, extending four hastas — there, Lord Narayana himself dwells within the depths of the Ganga.

Verse 85 (devibhagavatam.9.34.85)

tatra nārāyaṇakṣetre mṛto yāti hareḥ padam | vārāṇasyāṁ badaryāṁ ca gaṅgāsāgarasaṅgame

He who dies within that Narayana-kshetra goes to the abode of Hari. Such sacred sites include Varanasi, Badari, and the confluence of the Ganga with the ocean;

Verse 86 (devibhagavatam.9.34.86)

puṣkare hariharakṣetre prabhāse kāmarūsthale | haridvāre ca kedāre tathā mātṛpure'pi ca

— Pushkara, the field of Hari-Hara, Prabhasa, the land of Kamarupa; Haridwar, and Kedara, and likewise Matripura;

sarasvatīnadītīre puṇye vṛndāvane vane | godāvaryāṁ ca kauśikyāṁ triveṇyāṁ ca himācale

— the banks of the Sarasvati river, the sacred forest of Vrindavana; the Godavari, the Kaushiki, the Triveni, and the Himalayas;

Verse 88 (devibhagavatam.9.34.88)

eṣu tīrtheṣu yo dānaṁ pratigṛhṇāti kāmataḥ | sa ca tīrthapratigrāhī kumbhīpāke prayāti saḥ

— he who, driven by desire, accepts gifts at these sacred sites is what is meant by "tirtha-receiver," and he goes to Kumbhipaka.

Verse 89 (devibhagavatam.9.34.89)

śūdrasevī śūdrayājī grāmayājīti kīrtitaḥ | tathā devopajīvī ca devalaḥ parikīrtitaḥ

One who serves shudras or officiates as priest for them is declared a "village-priest"; and one who lives off temple income is declared a "devala."

Verse 90 (devibhagavatam.9.34.90)

śūdrapākopajīvī yaḥ sūpakāra iti smṛtaḥ | sandhyāpūjanahīnaśca pramattaḥ patitaḥ smṛtaḥ

He who earns his living by cooking for shudras is called a "cook"; and he who neglects the sandhya and worship is called "negligent" and "fallen."

Verse 91 (devibhagavatam.9.34.91)
