dharmarāja uvāca | devasevāṁ vinā sādhvi na bhavetkarmakṛntanam | śuddhakarma śuddhabījaṁ narakaśca kukarmaṇā

Dharmaraja said: O virtuous one, without service to God, karma cannot be cut away. Pure action is the pure seed of merit, while hell results from evil action.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.9.35.2)

puṁścalyannaṁ ca yo bhuṅkte yo'syāṁ gacchetpativrate | sa dvijaḥ kālasūtraṁ ca mṛto yāti sudurgamam

O faithful wife, the twice-born who eats the food of a promiscuous woman, or who goes to her, upon death goes to the hard-to-traverse Kalasutra.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.9.35.3)

śatavarṣaṁ kālasūtre sthirībhūto bhaved dhruvam | tatra janmani rogī ca tataḥ śuddho bhaved dvijaḥ

For a hundred years he surely remains fixed there in Kalasutra; in his next birth he is diseased; after that the twice-born becomes purified.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.9.35.4)

pativratā caikapatau dvitīye kulaṭā smṛtā | tṛtīye dharṣiṇī jñeyā caturthe puṁścalītyapi

A woman faithful to one husband is called "pativrata." With a second man, she is called "kulata." With a third, she is known as "dharshini." With a fourth, she is also called "punshchali."

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.9.35.5)

veśyā ca pañcame ṣaṣṭhe puṅgī ca saptame'ṣṭame | tata ūrdhvaṁ mahāveśyā sāspṛśyā sarvajātiṣu

With a fifth and sixth man, "veshya" (courtesan); with a seventh and eighth, "pungi." Beyond that, she is a "mahaveshya," untouchable to every caste.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.9.35.6)

yo dvijaḥ kulaṭāṁ gaccheddharṣiṇīṁ puṁścalīmapi | puṅgīṁ veśyāṁ mahāveśyāṁ matsyode yāti niścitam

The twice-born who goes to a kulata, a dharshini, or a punshchali, or to a pungi, a veshya, or a mahaveshya, surely goes to Matsyoda, the Fish-Water hell.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.9.35.7)

śatābdaṁ kulaṭāgāmī dhṛṣṭāgāmī caturguṇam | ṣaḍguṇaṁ puṁścalīgāmī veśyāgāmī guṇāṣṭakam

He who goes to a kulata dwells there a hundred years; to a dharshini, four times that; to a punshchali, six times; to a veshya, eight times.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.9.35.8)

He who goes to a pungi surely dwells there tenfold; and he who lusts after a mahaveshya dwells there ten times that again.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.9.35.9)

tatraiva yātanāṁ bhuṅkte yamadūtena tāḍitaḥ | tittiriḥ kulaṭāgāmī dhṛṣṭāgāmī ca vāyasaḥ

There he undergoes torment, beaten by Yama's messenger. Thereafter, he who went to a kulata becomes a partridge; he who went to a dharshini becomes a crow;

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.9.35.10)

kokilaḥ puṁścalīgāmī veśyāgāmī vṛkaḥ smṛtaḥ | puṅgīgāmī sūkaraśca saptajanmani bhārate

— he who went to a punshchali becomes a cuckoo; he who went to a veshya is called a wolf; he who went to a pungi becomes a pig, for seven births in Bharata.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.9.35.11)

mahāveśyāpragāmī ca jāyate śālmalītaruḥ | yo bhuṅkte jñānahīnaśca grahaṇe candrasūryayoḥ

He who went to a mahaveshya is born as a silk-cotton tree. He who, devoid of knowledge, eats food during an eclipse of the moon or sun —

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.9.35.12)

aruntudaṁ sa yātyevāpyannamānābdameva ca | tato bhavenmānavaścāpyudare rogapīḍitaḥ

— surely goes to Aruntuda, for as many years as there are grains of food eaten. Thereafter he becomes a man afflicted with disease of the belly,

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.9.35.13)

gulmayuktaśca kāṇaśca dantahīnastataḥ śuciḥ | vākpradattāṁ svakanyāṁ ca yo'nyasmai pradadāti ca

— afflicted with abdominal tumors, one-eyed, and toothless; after that he becomes purified. He who, having promised his daughter by word, then gives her to another —

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.9.35.14)

sa vasetpāṁsukuṇḍe ca tadbhojī śatavatsaram | taddravyahārī yaḥ sādhvi pāṁsuveṣṭe śatābdakam

— dwells in the Dust-Pit, made to consume it, for a hundred years. O virtuous one, he who steals another's property is bound in dust for a hundred years.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.9.35.15)

nivaseccharaśayyāyāṁ mama dūtena tāḍitaḥ | bhaktyā na pūjayedvipraḥ śivaliṅgaṁ ca pārthivam

He dwells upon a bed of arrows, beaten by my messenger. The brahmin who does not, with devotion, worship the clay Shiva-linga —

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.9.35.16)

sa yāti śūlinaḥ pāpācchūlaprotaṁ sudāruṇam | sthitvā śatābdaṁ tatraiva śvāpadaḥ saptajanmasu

— goes, for his sin against Shiva, the Trident-Bearer, to the dreadful Impaling-Pit. Having remained there for a hundred years, he becomes a wild beast for seven births.

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.9.35.17)

tato bhaveddevalaśca saptajanma tataḥ śuciḥ | karoti kuṇṭhitaṁ vipraṁ yadbhiyā kampate dvijaḥ

Thereafter he becomes a devala for seven births; after that he becomes purified. He who so intimidates a brahmin that the twice-born trembles in fear of him —

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.9.35.18)

prakampane vasetso'pi vipralomābdameva ca | prakopavadanā kopāt svāminaṁ yā ca paśyati

— dwells in the Trembling-Pit for as many years as there are hairs upon that brahmin's body. The woman who, in wrath, glares with an angry face at her husband —

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.9.35.19)

kaṭūktiṁ taṁ pravadati solmukaṁ samprayāti hi | ulkāṁ dadāti tadvaktre satataṁ mama kiṅkaraḥ

— and speaks harsh words to him, surely goes to the Firebrand-Pit; there my servant continually applies a burning torch to her face.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.9.35.20)

daṇḍena tāḍayenmūrdhni tallomābdapramāṇakam | tato bhavenmānavī ca vidhavā saptajanmasu

He beats her head with a rod, for as many years as there are hairs upon her head. Thereafter she becomes a woman, widowed, for seven births.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.9.35.21)

sā bhuktvā caiva vaidhavyaṁ vyādhiyuktā tataḥ śuciḥ | yā brāhmaṇī śūdrabhogyā cāndhakūpe prayāti sā

Having endured widowhood, afflicted with disease, she then becomes purified. The brahmin woman who is enjoyed by a shudra goes to the Blind Well.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.9.35.22)

taptaśaucodake dhvānte tadāhārī divāniśam | nivasedatisantaptā mama dūtena tāḍitā

In that boiling, filthy water, in darkness, made to consume it day and night, she dwells, exceedingly tormented, beaten by my messenger.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.9.35.23)

śaucodake nimagnā sā yāvadindrāścaturdaśa | kākī janmasahasrāṇi śatajanmāni sūkarī

Immersed in that filthy water for the span of fourteen Indras, she then becomes a crow for a thousand births, and a sow for a hundred births;

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.9.35.24)

śṛgālī śatajanmāni śatajanmāni kukkuṭī | pārāvatī saptajanma vānarī saptajanmasu

— a jackal for a hundred births, a hen for a hundred births; a dove for seven births, and a female monkey for seven births.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.9.35.25)

tato bhavetsā cāṇḍālī sarvabhogyā ca bhārate | tato bhavecca rajakī yakṣmagrastā ca puṁścalī

Thereafter she becomes an outcaste woman in Bharata, given over to all; then she becomes a washerwoman, afflicted with consumption and promiscuous.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.9.35.26)

tataḥ kuṣṭhayutā tailakārī śuddhā bhavettataḥ | nivasedvedhane veśyā puṅgī ca daṇḍatāḍane

Then she becomes a leprous oil-presser's wife; after that she becomes purified. (Returning to the classification of pits:) the veshya dwells in the Piercing-Pit, and the pungi in the Rod-Beating Pit;

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.9.35.27)

jalarandhre vasedveśyā kulaṭā dehacūrṇake | svairiṇī dalane caiva dhṛṣṭā ca śoṣaṇe tathā

— the veshya dwells in the Water-Hole, the kulata in the Body-Pulverizing-Pit; the wanton woman in the Splitting-Pit, and the dharshini in the Withering-Pit;

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.9.35.28)

nivasedyātanāyuktā mama dūtena tāḍitā | viṇmūtrabhakṣā satataṁ yāvanmanvantaraṁ sati

— each dwells there in torment, beaten by my messenger, continually eating excrement and urine, for the span of a Manvantara.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.9.35.29)

tato bhavedviṭkṛmiśca lakṣavarṣaṁ tataḥ śuciḥ | brāhmaṇo brāhmaṇīṁ gacchetkṣatriyāṁ vāpi kṣatriyaḥ

Thereafter she becomes a worm in excrement for a hundred thousand years; after that she becomes purified. If a brahmin man approaches a brahmin woman not his own, or a kshatriya a kshatriya woman —

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.9.35.30)

vaiśyo vaiśyāṁ ca śūdrā vā śūdraścāpi vrajedyadi | savarṇaparadāraiśca kaṣāyaṁ yānti te janāḥ

— or a vaishya a vaishya woman, or a shudra a shudra woman not his own — those who go to another's wife of their own caste go to Kashaya, the Astringent-Water Hell.

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.9.35.31)

bhuktvā kaṣāyataptodaṁ nivasedvā śatābdakam | tato vipro bhavecchuddhastato vai kṣatriyādayaḥ

Having drunk that boiling astringent water, he dwells there for a hundred years. Thereafter the brahmin becomes purified, and then the kshatriya and the rest as well.

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.9.35.32)

yoṣitaścāpi śuddhyantītyevamāha pitāmahaḥ | kṣatriyo brāhmaṇīṁ gacchedvaiśyo vāpi pativrate

"Women too become purified in this same way" — so says the Grandfather Brahma. O faithful wife, if a kshatriya goes to a brahmin woman, or a vaishya likewise —

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.9.35.33)

mātṛgāmī bhavetso'pi śūrpe ca narake vaset | śūrpākāraiśca kṛmibhirbrāhmaṇyā saha bhakṣitaḥ

— he too becomes as one who violates his own mother, and dwells in the hell called Shurpa. There, together with the brahmin woman, he is devoured by winnowing-fan-shaped worms.

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.9.35.34)

prataptamūtrabhojī ca mama dūtena tāḍitaḥ | tatraiva yātanāṁ bhuṅkte yāvadindrāścaturdaśa

Made to consume boiling urine, beaten by my messenger, he undergoes torment there for the span of fourteen Indras.

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.9.35.35)

saptajanma varāhaśca chāgalaśca tataḥ śuciḥ | kare dhṛtvā tu tulasīṁ pratijñāṁ yo na pālayet

He becomes a pig for seven births, and a goat; after that he becomes purified. He who, having taken a Tulasi leaf in hand as a solemn pledge, does not keep his vow —

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.9.35.36)

mithyā vā śapathaṁ kuryātsa ca jvālāmukhaṁ vrajet | gaṅgātoyaṁ kare kṛtvā pratijñāṁ yo na pālayet

— or who swears a false oath, goes to the Flame-Mouth. He who, having taken Ganga water in hand, does not keep his pledge —

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.9.35.37)

śilāṁ vā devapratimāṁ sa ca jvālāmukhaṁ vrajet | dattvā dakṣiṇahastaṁ ca pratijñāṁ yo na pālayet

— or swears by a sacred stone or the image of a deity, goes to the Flame-Mouth. He who, having given his right hand in pledge, does not keep his promise —

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.9.35.38)

sthitvā devagṛhe vāpi sa ca jvālāmukhaṁ vrajet | āspṛśya brāhmaṇaṁ gāṁ ca jvālāvahniṁ vrajed dvijaḥ

— or breaks his word while standing in a temple, goes to the Flame-Mouth. The twice-born who breaks a vow sworn upon touching a brahmin or a cow goes to the Flame-Fire.

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.9.35.39)

In general, whoever fails to keep a pledge goes to the Flame-Mouth. He who betrays a friend, who is ungrateful, and who betrays trust —

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.9.35.40)

mithyāsākṣyapradaścaiva sa ca jvālāmukhaṁ vrajet | ete tatra vasantyeva yāvadindrāścaturdaśa

— and he who gives false testimony likewise goes to the Flame-Mouth. All these dwell there for the span of fourteen Indras.

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.9.35.41)

tathāṅgārapradagdhāśca mama dūtena tāḍitāḥ | cāṇḍālastulasīṁ spṛṣṭvā saptajanma tataḥ śuciḥ

— scorched there by burning coals, beaten by my messenger. An outcaste who touches Tulasi remains impure for seven births; after that he becomes purified.

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.9.35.42)

mleccho gaṅgājalasparśī pañcajanma tataḥ śuciḥ | śilāsparśī viṭkṛmiśca saptajanmasu sundari

A Mleccha who touches the water of the Ganga remains impure for five births; after that he becomes purified. O beautiful one, he who touches the sacred stone becomes a worm in excrement for seven births.

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.9.35.43)

arcāsparśī brahmakṛmiḥ saptajanma tataḥ śuci | dakṣahastapradātā ca sarpaśca saptajanmasu

He who wrongfully touches the deity's image becomes a worm for seven births; after that he becomes purified. He who gives his right hand in a false pledge becomes a serpent for seven births.

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.9.35.44)

tato bhaved brahmahīno mānavaśca tataḥ śuciḥ | mithyāvādī devagṛhe devalaḥ saptajanmasu

Thereafter he becomes a man devoid of brahminical status; after that he becomes purified. He who lies within a temple becomes a devala for seven births.

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.9.35.45)

He who wrongfully touches a brahmin surely becomes a tiger. Thereafter he becomes mute and deaf for three births.

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.9.35.46)

bhāryāhīno bandhuhīno vaṁśahīnastataḥ śuciḥ | mitradrohī ca nakulaḥ kṛtaghnaścāpi gaṇḍakaḥ

Without a wife, without kinsfolk, without lineage; after that he becomes purified. As for the betrayer of a friend and the ungrateful man: the friend-betrayer becomes a mongoose, and the ungrateful man a rhinoceros;

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.9.35.47)

viśvāsaghātī vyāghraśca saptajanmasu bhārate | mithyāsākṣī ca vaktavye maṇḍūkaḥ saptajanmasu

— the betrayer of trust becomes a tiger for seven births in Bharata. He who gives false testimony when he ought to speak the truth becomes a frog for seven births.

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.9.35.48)

pūrvānsaptāparānsapta puruṣānhanti cātmanaḥ | nityakriyāvihīnaśca jaḍatvena yuto dvijaḥ

(Regarding those who neglect their daily rites:) he destroys seven generations before him and seven after — the twice-born devoid of daily rites and sunk in sloth;

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.9.35.49)

yasyānāsthā vedavākye mandaṁ hasati santatam | vratopavāsahīnaśca sadvākyaparanindakaḥ

— who has no faith in the words of the Veda, and constantly sneers scornfully at them; who is devoid of vows and fasting, and who reviles wise counsel;

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.9.35.50)

dhūmrāndhe ca vasetso'pi śatābdaṁ dhūmrabhakṣakaḥ | jalajanturbhavetso'pi śatajanmakrameṇa ca

— dwells for a hundred years in Dhumrandha, made to breathe smoke there. He then becomes, in due succession, an aquatic creature for a hundred births.

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.9.35.51)

tato nānāprakāraśca matsyajātistataḥ śuciḥ | yaḥ karotyupahāsaṁ ca devabrāhmaṇayordhane

Thereafter he takes birth as fish of various kinds; after that he becomes purified. He who mocks the wealth of gods or brahmins —

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.9.35.52)

pātayitvā sa puruṣāndaśapūrvāndaśāparān | so'yaṁ yāti ca dhūmrāndhaṁ dhūmradhvāntasamanvitam

— casting down ten generations before him and ten after, this man goes to Dhumrandha, filled with smoke and darkness.

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.9.35.53)

dhūmrakliṣṭo dhūmrabhojī vasettatra caturguṇam | tato mūṣakajātiśca saptajanmasu bhārate

Tormented by smoke, made to consume it, he dwells there four times as long. Thereafter he takes birth as a mouse for seven births in Bharata.

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.9.35.54)

Then he takes various forms of birds and of worms; then various trees and beasts; and then he becomes a man once more.

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.9.35.55)

vipro daivajñajīvī ca vaidyajīvī cikitsakaḥ | lākṣālohādivyāpārī rasādivikrayī ca yaḥ

(Regarding certain trades unbecoming a brahmin:) the brahmin who lives by astrology, or by practicing medicine for a fee, or who trades in lac and metal, or sells mercury and the like —

Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.9.35.56)
