"The story of Mahalakshmi, great and wondrous, I have now understood. Tell me now some other hidden story —

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.9.43.4)

atīva gopanīyaṁ yadupayuktaṁ ca sarvataḥ | aprakāśyaṁ purāṇeṣu vedoktaṁ dharmasaṁyutam

"— something exceedingly secret, yet altogether useful, not commonly disclosed in the Puranas, taught in the Veda, joined with dharma."

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.9.43.5)

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | nānāprakāramākhyānamaprakāśyaṁ purāṇataḥ | śrutaṁ katividhaṁ gūḍhamāste brahman sudurlabham

Shri Narayana said: "There are many kinds of accounts undisclosed in the Puranas; several such hidden and most rare accounts exist, having been heard, O Brahmin.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.9.43.6)

teṣu yatsārabhūtaṁ ca śrotuṁ kiṁ vā tvamicchasi | tanme brūhi mahābhāga paścādvakṣyāmi tatpunaḥ

"Among them, tell me which essential one you wish to hear, O most fortunate one; then I shall relate it to you."

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.9.43.7)

nārada uvāca | svāhā devī havirdāne praśastā sarvakarmasu | pitṛdāne svadhā śastā dakṣiṇā sarvato varā

Narada said: "The goddess Svaha is praised in the offering of oblations, in all rites; Svadha is praised in the offering to the ancestors; Dakshina is the best of all in every way.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.9.43.8)

"I wish to hear from your own mouth their story — their birth, their fruit, and their preeminence. Tell me, O best of the knowers of the Veda."

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.9.43.9)

sūta uvāca | nāradasya vacaḥ śrutvā prahasya munisattamaḥ | kathāṁ kathitumārebhe purāṇoktāṁ purātanīm

Suta said: Hearing Narada's words, that best of sages, smiling, began to relate the ancient story told in the Puranas.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.9.43.10)

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | sṛṣṭeḥ prathamato devāḥ svāhārārthaṁ yayuḥ purā | brahmalokaṁ brahmasabhāmājagmuḥ sumanoharām

Shri Narayana said: At the very first of creation, the gods, of old, went in search of food; they went to Brahmaloka, to Brahma's most beautiful assembly.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.9.43.11)

gatvā nivedanaṁ cakrurāhārahetukaṁ mune | brahmā śrutvā pratijñāya niṣeve śrīhariṁ param

Going there, O sage, they made their petition regarding food. Brahma, having heard them, having promised to help, took refuge in the supreme Shri Hari.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.9.43.12)

nārada uvāca | yajñarūpo hi bhagavān kalayā ca babhūva ha | yajñe yadyaddhavirdānaṁ dattaṁ tebhyaśca brāhmaṇaiḥ

Narada said: "The Blessed Lord, indeed, became sacrifice itself, through a partial manifestation. Whatever offering of oblation is given in a sacrifice by the Brahmins to them —

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.9.43.13)

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | havirdadati viprāśca bhaktyā ca kṣatriyādayaḥ | surā naiva prāpnuvanti taddānaṁ munipuṅgava

Shri Narayana said: "The Brahmins, and the Kshatriyas and others, give offerings with devotion; but the gods, O foremost of sages, were not receiving that gift at all.

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.9.43.14)

devā viṣaṇṇāste sarve tatsabhāṁ ca yayuḥ punaḥ | gatvā nivedanaṁ cakrurāhārābhāvahetukam

"All the gods, despondent, went once more to that assembly; going there, they made petition concerning the lack of their food.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.9.43.15)

brahmā śrutvā tu dhyānena śrīkṛṣṇaṁ śaraṇaṁ yayau | pūjāñcakāra prakṛtedhyānenaiva tadājñayā

"Brahma, hearing them, took refuge in Shri Krishna through meditation. He performed worship of Prakriti through meditation alone, by his command —

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.9.43.16)

prakṛteḥ kalayā caiva sarvaśaktisvarūpiṇī | atīva sundarī śyāmā ramaṇīyā manoharā

"— and by a partial manifestation of Prakriti, there appeared one who was the very embodiment of all power, exceedingly beautiful, dark-complexioned, lovely, enchanting,

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.9.43.17)

īṣaddhāsyaprasannāsyā bhaktānugrahakātarā | uvāceti vidheragre padmayone varaṁ vṛṇu

"her face gently smiling and joyful, eager to bestow grace on her devotees. She spoke thus before the Creator: 'O Lotus-born one, choose your boon.'

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.9.43.18)

vidhistadvacanaṁ śrutvā sambhramātsamuvāca tām | prajāpatiruvāca | tvamagnerdāhikā śaktirbhava yātīva sundarī

"The Creator, hearing her words, spoke to her hastily. Prajapati said: 'Become the burning power of Fire, O you who are exceedingly beautiful.

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.9.43.19)

dagdhuṁ na śaktaḥ prakṛtīrhutāśaśca tvayā vinā | tvannāmoccārya mantrānte yo dāsyati havirnaraḥ

" 'Without you, Fire is not able to consume created things. Whatever man, uttering your name at the end of a mantra, offers an oblation —

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.9.43.20)

surebhyastatprāpnuvanti surāḥ sānandapūrvakam | agneḥ sampatsvarūpā ca śrīrūpā sā gṛheśvarī

" '— that oblation the gods will receive, with great joy. You will be the very prosperity of Fire, the very Shri, the mistress of the household,

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.9.43.21)

devānāṁ pūjitā śaśvannarādīnāṁ bhavāmbike | brahmaṇaśca vacaḥ śrutvā sā viṣaṇṇā babhūva ha

" '— ever worshipped by gods and by men, O Mother.' Hearing Brahma's words, she became despondent.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.9.43.22)

tamuvāca tato devī svābhiprāyaṁ svayambhuvam | svāhovāca | ahaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ bhajiṣyāmi tapasā sucireṇa ca

Then the Devi spoke her own intention to Svayambhu. Svaha said: "I shall worship Krishna through prolonged austerity.

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.9.43.23)

brahmaṁstadanyaṁ yatkiñcitsvapnavad bhramameva ca | vidhātā jagatastvaṁ ca śambhurmṛtyuñjayo vibhuḥ

"O Brahma, everything else besides him is but a dream, mere delusion. You are the ordainer of the world, and Shambhu is the conqueror of death, the all-pervading lord;

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.9.43.24)

bibharti śeṣo viśvaṁ ca dharmaḥ sākṣī ca dharmiṇām | sarvādyapūjyo devānāṁ gaṇeṣu ca gaṇeśvaraḥ

"Shesha bears the universe; Dharma is the witness of the righteous; foremost among all worshipped by the gods, the lord of the ganas;

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.9.43.25)

prakṛtiḥ sarvasampūjyā yatprasādātpurābhavat | ṛṣayo munayaścaiva pūjitā yanniṣevayā

"Prakriti is worshipped by all, by whose grace all this came to be of old; sages and munis alike are honored through their service to him.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.9.43.26)

tatpādapadmaṁ niyataṁ bhāvena cintayāmyaham | padmāsyā pādyamityuktvā padmanābhānusārataḥ

"Upon his lotus feet alone, with steady devotion, do I meditate." Speaking thus with her lotus-mouth, in accordance with the Lotus-Navelled One,

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.9.43.27)

jagāma tapase devī dhyātvā kṛṣṇaṁ nirāmayam | tapastepe varṣalakṣamekapādena padmajā

the Devi went forth to perform austerity, meditating upon the flawless Krishna; the lotus-born one practiced austerity for a hundred thousand years, standing on one foot.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.9.43.28)

tadā dadarśa śrīkṛṣṇaṁ nirguṇaṁ prakṛteḥ param | atīva kamanīyaṁ ca rūpaṁ dṛṣṭvā ca rūpiṇī

Then she beheld Shri Krishna, beyond qualities, transcending Prakriti, exceedingly enchanting in form; and seeing that form, she who was herself embodied,

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.9.43.29)

mūrcchāṁ samprāpa kālena kāmeśasya ca kāmukī | vijñāya tadabhiprāyaṁ sarvajñastāmuvāca ha

in time, being enamored of the Lord of Love, fell into a swoon. Knowing her intent, the All-Knowing One spoke to her.

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.9.43.30)

samutthāpya ca tāṁ kroḍe kṣīṇāṅgīṁ tapasā ciram | śrībhagavānuvāca | vārāhe vai tvamaṁśena mama patnī bhaviṣyasi

Raising her up into his lap, her body wasted by long austerity, the Blessed Lord said: "In the Varaha age, by a partial manifestation, you shall become my wife —

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.9.43.31)

nāmnā nāgnajitī kanyā kānte nagnajitasya ca | adhunāgnerdāhikā tvaṁ bhava patnī ca bhāminī

" '— a maiden named Nagnajiti, the beloved daughter of Nagnajit. For now, become the burning power of Fire, and become, O radiant one, his wife.'

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.9.43.32)

mantrāṅgarūpā pūjyā ca matprasādād bhaviṣyasi | vahnistvāṁ bhaktibhāvena sampūjya ca gṛheśvarīm

" 'By my grace you shall become an essential part of every mantra, to be worshipped. Fire, having worshipped you with devotion as the mistress of the household,

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.9.43.33)

ramiṣyati tvayā sārdhaṁ rāmayā ramaṇīyayā | ityuktvāntardadhe devo devīṁ sambhāṣya nārada

" '— shall take his delight with you, his lovely and beloved wife.' Having spoken thus, and having addressed the Devi, O Narada, the Lord vanished from sight.

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.9.43.34)

tatrājagāma santrasto vahnirbrahmanideśataḥ | sāmavedoktadhyānena dhyātvā tāṁ jagadambikām

There, awestruck, Fire came at Brahma's direction; meditating upon that Mother of the world with the meditation-verse prescribed in the Samaveda,

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.9.43.35)

sampūjya parituṣṭāva pāṇiṁ jagrāha mantrataḥ | tadā divyaṁ varṣaśataṁ sa reme rāmayā saha

he worshipped her, praised her to her full satisfaction, and took her hand according to the mantra rite. Then, for a hundred divine years, he sported together with his lovely wife,

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.9.43.36)

atīva nirjane deśe sambhogasukhade sadā | babhūva garbhastasyāṁ ca hutāśasya ca tejasā

in an utterly secluded place, ever giving joy in union. And by the splendor of Fire, a pregnancy came upon her.

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.9.43.37)

taṁ dadhāra ca sā devī divyaṁ dvādaśavatsaram | tataḥ suṣāva putrāṁśca ramaṇīyānmanoharān

That Devi bore it for twelve divine years; then she gave birth to lovely, enchanting sons —

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.9.43.38)

dakṣiṇāgnigārhapatyāhavanīyān krameṇa ca | ṛṣayo munayaścaiva brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyādayaḥ

— Dakshinagni, Garhapatya, and Ahavaniya, the three sacred fires, one after another. And the seers, the sages, the Brahmins, the Kshatriyas, and others,

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.9.43.39)

svāhāntaṁ mantramuccārya havirdānaṁ ca cakrire | svāhāyuktaṁ ca mantraṁ ca yo gṛhṇāti praśastakam

uttering the mantra ending with "svāhā", performed the offering of oblations. Whoever takes up that excellent mantra joined with "svāhā" —

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.9.43.40)

sarvasiddhirbhavettasya mantragrahaṇamātrataḥ | viṣahīno yathā sarpo vedahīno yathā dvijaḥ

"— all success comes to him, by the mere taking of that mantra. Just as a snake without venom, just as a Brahmin without the Veda,

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.9.43.41)

patisevāvihīnā strī vidyāhīno yathā pumān | phalaśākhāvihīnaśca yathā vṛkṣo hi ninditaḥ

"just as a woman without service to her husband, just as a man without learning, just as a tree without fruit or branches is despised,

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.9.43.42)

svāhāhīnastathā mantro na hutaḥ phaladāyakaḥ | parituṣṭā dvijāḥ sarve devāḥ samprāpurāhutīḥ

"— so too is a mantra without "svāhā": when offered, it does not bear fruit. All the Brahmins became fully satisfied, and the gods received their oblations,

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.9.43.43)

svāhāntenaiva mantreṇa saphalaṁ sarvameva ca | ityevaṁ kathitaṁ sarvaṁ svāhopākhyānamuttamam

all made fruitful by the very mantra ending with "svāhā". Thus has this whole excellent story of Svaha been told,

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.9.43.44)

sukhadaṁ mokṣadaṁ sāraṁ kiṁ bhūyaḥ śrotumicchasi | nārada uvāca | svāhāpūjāvidhānaṁ ca dhyānaṁ stotraṁ munīśvara

bringing happiness, bestowing liberation, full of essence. What more do you wish to hear? Narada said: "O lord of sages, the manner of worshipping Svaha, her meditation-verse, and her hymn,

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.9.43.45)

sampūjya vahnistuṣṭāva yena tadvada me prabho | śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | dhyānaṁ ca sāmavedoktaṁ stotrapūjāvidhānakam

"— by which Fire worshipped and praised her to her satisfaction — tell that to me, O Lord." Shri Narayana said: "The meditation-verse taught in the Samaveda, along with the hymn and the manner of worship —

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.9.43.46)

vadāmi śrūyatāṁ brahman sāvadhāno munīśvara | sarvayajñārambhakāle śālagrāme ghaṭe'thavā

"— I shall tell you; listen attentively, O lord of sages. At the beginning of every sacrifice, upon the shalagrama or in a water-pot,

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.9.43.47)

svāhāṁ sampūjya yatnena yajñaṁ kuryātkalāptaye | svāhāṁ mantrāṅgayuktāṁ ca mantrasiddhisvarūpiṇīm

"— one should carefully worship Svaha, and then perform the sacrifice, to obtain her partial grace — meditating on Svaha as an essential part of every mantra, of the very nature of mantra-perfection,

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.9.43.48)

siddhāṁ ca siddhidāṁ nṝṇāṁ karmaṇāṁ phaladāṁ śubhām | iti dhyātvā ca mūlena dattvā pādyādikaṁ naraḥ

"— perfected herself, bestowing perfection upon men, granting the fruit of their rites, auspicious — meditating thus, and offering, with the root-mantra, the water for the feet and other offerings, a man

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.9.43.49)

sarvasiddhiṁ labhetstutvā mūlamantraṁ mune śṛṇu | oṁ hrīṁ śrīṁ vahnijāyāyai devyai svāhetyanena ca

"— obtains all success by praising her with this root-mantra: 'Oṁ hrīṁ śrīṁ vahnijāyāyai devyai svāhā' — hear this, O sage.

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.9.43.50)

yaḥ pūjayecca tāṁ bhaktyā sarveṣṭaṁ sambhaved dhruvam | vahniruvāca | svāhā vahnipriyā vahnijāyā santoṣakāriṇī

"Whoever worships her with this, with devotion, certainly attains every desire." Fire said: "Svaha, beloved of Fire, Fire's own wife, the giver of contentment;

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.9.43.51)

śaktiḥ kriyā kāladātrī paripākakarī dhruvā | gatiḥ sadā narāṇāṁ ca dāhikā dahanakṣamā

"she is power, action, the giver of time, the bringer of ripening, ever constant; ever the refuge of men, the burning power capable of consuming.

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.9.43.52)

saṁsārasārarūpā ca ghorasaṁsāratāriṇī | devajīvanarūpā ca devapoṣaṇakāriṇī

"She is the very essence of worldly existence, and the one who ferries souls across this dreadful world; the very life of the gods, and the nourisher of the gods."

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.9.43.53)

ṣoḍaśaitāni nāmāni yaḥ paṭhedbhaktisaṁyutaḥ | sarvasiddhirbhavettasya iha loke paratra ca

Whoever recites these sixteen names with devotion attains every success, both in this world and the next.

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.9.43.54)

nāṅgahīnaṁ bhavettasya sarvaṁ karma suśobhanam | aputro labhate putraṁ bhāryāhīno labhetpriyām

None of his rites will remain deficient in any part; all his deeds shall be most auspicious. He who has no son obtains a son; he who has no wife obtains a beloved one,

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.9.43.55)

rambhopamāṁ svakāntāṁ ca samprāpya sukhamāpnuyāt

one comparable in beauty to Rambha, becoming his own beloved wife, and having obtained her, he shall attain happiness.
