Chapter 46All chaptersChapter 48

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.9.47.1)

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | kathitaṁ ṣaṣṭhyupākhyānaṁ brahmaputra yathā''gamam | devī maṅgalacaṇḍī ca tadākhyānaṁ niśāmaya

Shri Narayana said: The story of Shashthi has been told to you, O son of Brahma, as it is in the scriptures. Now listen to the story of the Devi Mangalachandi.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.9.47.2)

tasyāḥ pūjādikaṁ sarvaṁ dharmavaktreṇa yacchrutam | śrutisammatameveṣṭaṁ sarveṣāṁ viduṣāmapi

All her manner of worship, as heard from the mouth of Dharma, is desired and accepted by revelation, approved even by all the learned.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.9.47.3)

dakṣā yā vartate caṇḍī kalyāṇeṣu ca maṅgalā | maṅgaleṣu ca yā dakṣā sā ca maṅgalacaṇḍikā

She who is Chandi, skillful, and auspicious in bringing about good fortune, and who is skillful in all auspicious things — she is Mangalachandika.

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.9.47.4)

pūjyā yā vartate caṇḍī maṅgalo'pi mahīsutaḥ | maṅgalābhīṣṭadevī yā sā vā maṅgalacaṇḍikā

She who is the worshipped Chandi, and also connected to Mangala, the son of the Earth — she who is the desired deity of Mangala — she too is Mangalachandika.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.9.47.5)

maṅgalo manuvaṁśyaśca saptadvīpadharāpatiḥ | tasya pūjyābhīṣṭadevī tena maṅgalacaṇḍikā

Mangala, born in the line of Manu, was lord of the earth with its seven continents; she was his worshipped and desired deity, and for that reason she is Mangalachandika.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.9.47.6)

mūrtibhedena sā durgā mūlaprakṛtirīśvarī | kṛpārūpātipratyakṣā yoṣitāmiṣṭadevatā

By difference of form, she is Durga, the root Prakriti, the sovereign goddess; of the very form of compassion, most directly manifest, the desired deity of women.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.9.47.7)

prathame pūjitā sā ca śaṅkareṇa parātparā | tripurasya vadhe ghore viṣṇunā preritena ca

First she was worshipped by Shankara, that supreme one beyond the supreme, at the terrible slaying of Tripura, when he was urged on by Vishnu,

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.9.47.8)

brahman brahmopadeśena durgatena ca saṅkaṭe | ākāśātpatite yāne daityena pātite ruṣā

O Brahmin, by the instruction of Brahma, when he was in great distress and danger, his chariot having fallen from the sky, cast down in fury by the demon.

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.9.47.9)

brahmaviṣṇūpadiṣṭaśca durgāṁ tuṣṭāva śaṅkaraḥ | sā ca maṅgalacaṇḍī yā babhūva rūpabhedataḥ

Instructed by Brahma and Vishnu, Shankara praised Durga; and she, by a difference of form, became Mangalachandi.

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.9.47.10)

uvāca purataḥ śambhorbhayaṁ nāstīti te prabho | bhagavānvṛṣarūpaśca sarveśaste bhaviṣyati

She spoke before Shambhu: "Fear not, O Lord; the Blessed One in his bull-form, the Lord of all, shall be victorious for you.

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.9.47.11)

yuddhaśaktisvarūpāhaṁ bhaviṣyāmi na saṁśayaḥ | māyātmanā ca hariṇā sahāyena vṛṣadhvaja

"I shall become, without doubt, the very power of your battle; with Hari of illusory form as your helper, O one bearing the bull-banner —

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.9.47.12)

jahi daityaṁ svaśatruṁ ca surāṇāṁ padaghātakam | ityuktvāntarhitā devī śambhoḥ śaktirbabhūva sā

"— slay the demon, your own enemy, the destroyer of the gods' realm!" Having spoken thus, the Devi vanished, having become Shambhu's own power.

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.9.47.13)

viṣṇudattena śastreṇa jaghāna tamumāpatiḥ | munīndra patite daitye sarve devā maharṣayaḥ

With the weapon given by Vishnu, the Lord of Uma slew him. O lord of sages, when the demon had fallen, all the gods and the great sages

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.9.47.14)

tuṣṭuvuḥ śaṅkaraṁ devaṁ bhaktinamrātmakandharāḥ | sadyaḥ śirasi śambhośca puṣpavṛṣṭirbabhūva ha

praised the god Shankara, their necks bowed low in devotion; and immediately a shower of flowers fell upon Shambhu's head.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.9.47.15)

brahmā viṣṇuśca santuṣṭo dadau tasmai śubhāśiṣam | brahmaviṣṇūpadiṣṭaśca susnātaḥ śaṅkarastathā

Brahma and Vishnu, well pleased, gave him their auspicious blessing; and Shankara, instructed by Brahma and Vishnu, having bathed well,

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.9.47.16)

pūjayāmāsa tāṁ bhaktyā devīṁ maṅgalacaṇḍikām | pādyārghyācamanīyaiśca vastraiśca vividhairapi

worshipped that Devi Mangalachandika with devotion — with the water for her feet, the arghya, sipping-water, and with various garments too,

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.9.47.17)

with garments, ornaments, and garlands, with rice-puddings and cakes too, with honey and nectar, and with fruits of many kinds too,

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.9.47.19)

saṅgītairnartakairvādyairutsavairnāmakīrtanaiḥ | dhyātvā mādhyandinoktena dhyānena bhaktipūrvakam

with songs, dancers, music, festivities, and the chanting of her names; meditating upon her with the meditation-verse taught in the Madhyandina branch of the Veda, with devotion,

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.9.47.20)

dadau dravyāṇi mūlena mantreṇaiva ca nārada | oṁ hrīṁ śrīṁ klīṁ sarvapūjye devi maṅgalacaṇḍike

he offered these articles with the root-mantra itself, O Narada: "Oṁ hrīṁ śrīṁ klīṁ, O all-worshipped Devi Mangalachandike,

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.9.47.21)

hū~ hū~ phaṭ svāhāpyekaviṁśākṣaro manuḥ | pūjyaḥ kalpataruścaiva bhaktānāṁ sarvakāmadaḥ

"huṁ huṁ phaṭ svāhā" — this is the twenty-one-syllabled mantra, worthy of worship, itself a wish-fulfilling tree, granting every desire of her devotees.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.9.47.22)

daśalakṣajapenaiva mantrasiddhirbhaved dhruvam | dhyānaṁ ca śrūyatāṁ brahman vedoktaṁ sarvasammatam

By the recitation of this mantra one million times, the mantra's perfection is certainly attained. Hear now, O Brahmin, the meditation-verse taught in the Veda, accepted by all —

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.9.47.23)

devīṁ ṣoḍaśavarṣīyāṁ śaśvatsusthirayauvanām | bimboṣṭhīṁ sudatīṁ śuddhāṁ śaratpadmanibhānanām

Meditate upon the Devi as if sixteen years of age, ever fixed in unfading youth, her lips like the bimba fruit, of beautiful teeth, pure, her face like an autumn lotus,

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.9.47.24)

śvetacampakavarṇābhāṁ sunīlotpalalocanām | jagaddhātrīṁ ca dātrīṁ ca sarvebhyaḥ sarvasampadām

radiant with the hue of the white champaka, her eyes like a deep-blue lotus; the Nurse and Sustainer of the world, the Giver of every kind of prosperity to all —

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.9.47.25)

saṁsārasāgare ghore jyotīrūpāṁ sadā bhaje | devyāśca dhyānamityevaṁ stavanaṁ śrūyatāṁ mune

— in this terrible ocean of worldly existence, ever of the form of light, I worship her always. Such is the meditation on the Devi; now hear her hymn, O sage.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.9.47.26)

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.9.47.30)

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.9.47.31)

sāre ca maṅgalādhāre pāre ca sarvakarmaṇām | pratimaṅgalavāre ca pūjye maṅgasukhaprade

"O essence, O foundation of good fortune, O the very completion of all rites; O you worshipped on every Tuesday, O bestower of blissful good fortune —"

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.9.47.32)

stotreṇānena śambhuśca stutvā maṅgalacaṇḍikām | pratimaṅgalavāre ca pūjāṁ dattvā gataḥ śivaḥ

With this hymn, Shambhu praised Mangalachandika; and, having offered worship to her on every Tuesday, Shiva then departed.

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.9.47.33)

prathame pūjitā devī śivena sarvamaṅgalā | dvitīye pūjitā sā ca maṅgalena graheṇa ca

First the Devi, the very auspiciousness of all, was worshipped by Shiva; second, she was worshipped by the planet Mangala (Mars);

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.9.47.34)

tṛtīte pūjitā bhadrā maṅgalena nṛpeṇa ca | caturthe maṅgale vāre sundarībhiḥ prapūjitā

pañcame maṅgalākāṅkṣinarairmaṅgalacaṇḍikā | pūjitā prativiśveṣu viśveśapūjitā sadā

Thereafter that Supreme Goddess became worshipped everywhere, by gods, by sages, by men, and by the Manus, O sage.

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.9.47.37)

devyāśca maṅgastotraṁ yaḥ śṛṇoti samāhitaḥ | tanmaṅgalaṁ bhavettasya na bhavettadamaṅgalam | vardhate putrapautraiśca maṅgalaṁ ca dine dine

Whoever, with a composed mind, listens to this auspicious hymn of the Devi — good fortune comes to him, and no misfortune befalls him; he prospers with sons and grandsons, and his good fortune grows day by day.

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.9.47.38)

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | uktaṁ dvayorupākhyānaṁ brahmaputra yathāgamam | śrūyatāṁ manasā''khyānaṁ yacchrutaṁ dharmavaktrataḥ

Shri Narayana said: The story of both has been told to you, O son of Brahma, as it is in the scriptures. Now hear the story of Manasa, as heard from the mouth of Dharma.

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.9.47.39)

sā ca kanyā bhagavatī kaśyapasya ca mānasī | tenaiva manasā devī manasā yā ca dīvyati

She, the blessed maiden, is the mind-born daughter of Kashyapa; and for that very reason, born of his mind, she is the Devi Manasa — she who shines forth through the mind.

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.9.47.40)

manasā dhyāyate yā ca paramātmānamīśvaram | tena sā manasā devī tena yogena dīvyati

And because she meditates in her mind upon the Supreme Soul, the Lord, for that reason she is the Devi Manasa, and through that yoga she shines forth.

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.9.47.41)

ātmārāmā ca sā devī vaiṣṇavī siddhayoginī | triyugaṁ ca tapastaptvā kṛṣṇasya paramātmanaḥ

That Devi delights in her own self, a Vaishnavi, a perfected yogini; having performed austerity for three ages in devotion to Krishna, the Supreme Soul,

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.9.47.42)

jaratkāruśarīraṁ ca dṛṣṭvā yatkṣīṇamīśvaraḥ | gopīpatirnāma cakre jaratkāruriti prabhuḥ

— seeing the wasted body of Jaratkaru, the Lord, the husband of the Gopi, gave her the name "Jaratkaru" —

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.9.47.43)

vāñchitaṁ ca dadau tasyai kṛpayā ca kṛpānidhiḥ | pūjāṁ ca kārayāmāsa cakāra ca svayaṁ prabhuḥ

— and, out of compassion, that Ocean of Compassion granted her desired boon; he had her worship performed, and the Lord himself performed it too.

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.9.47.44)

svarge ca nāgaloke ca pṛthivyāṁ brahmalokataḥ | bhṛśaṁ jagatsu gaurī sā sundarī ca manoharā

In heaven, in the world of serpents, on earth, and from Brahmaloka onward — throughout all the worlds, exceedingly fair, beautiful, and enchanting,

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.9.47.45)

jagadgaurīti vikhyātā tena sā pūjitā satī | śivaśiṣyā ca sā devī tena śaivī prakīrtitā

she is known by the name Jagadgauri, and for that she, that virtuous one, is worshipped. She is the disciple of Shiva, and for that the Devi is proclaimed as Shaivi.

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.9.47.46)

viṣṇubhaktātīva śaśvadvaiṣṇavī tena kīrtitā | nāgānāṁ prāṇarakṣitrī yajñe pārīkṣitasya ca

Ever a most devoted devotee of Vishnu, for that she is celebrated as Vaishnavi; the protectress of the lives of the serpents, at the sacrifice of Parikshit's son —

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.9.47.47)

nāgeśvarīti vikhyātā sā nāgabhaginīti ca | viṣaṁ saṁhartumīśā yā tena viṣaharī smṛtā

— she is known as Nageshvari, and also as Nagabhagini; and because she has power to destroy poison, she is remembered as Vishahari.

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.9.47.48)

siddhayogaṁ harātprāpa tena sā siddhayoginī | mahājñānaṁ ca yogaṁ ca mṛtasajjīvanīṁ parām

She obtained perfected yoga from Hara, and for that she is Siddhayogini; the supreme one who grants great knowledge, yoga, and revives the dead —

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.9.47.49)

mahājñānayutāṁ tāṁ ca pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ | āstīkasya munīndrasya mātā sāpi tapasvinī

the wise declare her to be endowed with great knowledge. She is also the mother of Astika, that lord among sages, herself an ascetic.

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.9.47.50)

āstīkamātā vijñātā jagatyāṁ supratiṣṭhitā | priyā munerjaratkārormunīndrasya mahātmanaḥ

She is known as the mother of Astika, firmly established in the world; the beloved of the sage Jaratkaru, that great-souled lord among sages,

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.9.47.51)

yogino viśvapūjyasya jaratkārupriyā tataḥ | jaratkārurjagadgaurī manasā siddhayoginī

that yogi worshipped by the whole world — and for that she is Jaratkaru-priya. Her names are: Jaratkaru, Jagadgauri, Manasa, Siddhayogini,

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.9.47.52)

vaiṣṇavī nāgabhaginī śaivī nāgeśvarī tathā | jaratkārupriyāstīkamātā viṣahareti ca

Vaishnavi, Nagabhagini, Shaivi, likewise Nageshvari, Jaratkarupriya, Astikamata, and Vishahari,

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.9.47.53)

mahājñānayutā caiva sā devī viśvapūjitā | dvādaśaitāni nāmāni pūjākāle tu yaḥ paṭhet

and the one endowed with great knowledge — she, that Devi, is worshipped by the whole world. Whoever, at the time of worship, recites these twelve names —

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.9.47.54)

tasya nāgabhayaṁ nāsti tasya vaṁśodbhavasya ca | nāgabhīte ca śayane nāgagraste ca mandire

— he has no fear of serpents, nor does anyone born in his lineage. Whether in a bed fearsome for serpents, or in a house infested by them,

Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.9.47.55)

nāgaśobhe mahādurge nāgaveṣṭitavigrahe | idaṁ stotraṁ paṭhitvā tu mucyate nātra saṁśayaḥ

in a great fortress adorned by images of serpents, or with one's own body entwined by a serpent — having recited this hymn, one is certainly freed; of this there is no doubt.

Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.9.47.56)

nityaṁ paṭhedyastaṁ dṛṣṭvā nāgavargaḥ palāyate | daśalakṣajapenaiva stotrasiddhirbhavennṛṇām

Whoever recites it daily — seeing him, the whole host of serpents flees away. By reciting the mantra one million times, the perfection of this hymn is attained by men.
