Skandha 9 · Chapter 48
The Story of Manasa
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.9.48.1)
śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | mattaḥ pūjāvidhānaṁ ca śrūyatāṁ munipuṅgava | dhyānaṁ ca sāmavedoktaṁ proktaṁ devīvidhānakam
Shri Narayana said: Hear now from me the manner of her worship, O foremost of sages; the meditation-verse, taught in the Samaveda, and the prescribed ritual of the Devi.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.9.48.2)
śvetacampakavarṇābhāṁ ratnabhūṣaṇabhūṣitām | vahniśuddhāṁśukādhānāṁ nāgayajñopavītinīm
Meditate upon her: radiant with the hue of the white champaka, adorned with jeweled ornaments, clad in a garment purified by fire, wearing a serpent as her sacred thread,
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.9.48.3)
mahājñānayutāṁ tāṁ ca pravarajñānināṁ varām | siddhādhiṣṭhātṛdevīṁ ca siddhāṁ siddhipradāṁ bhaje
endowed with great knowledge, the finest among the foremost of the wise; I worship her, the presiding deity of the perfected, herself perfected, the giver of perfection.
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.9.48.4)
iti dhyātvā ca tāṁ devīṁ mūlenaiva prapūjayet | naivedyairvividhairdhūpaiḥ puṣpagandhānulepanaiḥ
Meditating thus, one should worship that Devi with the root-mantra, with various food-offerings, incense, flowers, fragrance, and unguents,
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.9.48.5)
mūlamantraiśca vedoktairbhaktānāṁ vācchitapradaḥ | mune kalpatarurnāma susiddho dvādaśākṣaraḥ
with root-mantras taught in the Veda, granting the wishes of her devotees; O sage, its name is Kalpataru, most efficacious, of twelve syllables:
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.9.48.6)
oṁ hrīṁ śrīṁ klīṁ aiṁ manasādevyai svāheti kīrtitaḥ | pañcalakṣajapenaiva mantrasiddhirbhavennṛṇām
"Oṁ hrīṁ śrīṁ klīṁ aiṁ manasādevyai svāhā" — thus it is proclaimed. By five hundred thousand recitations, the mantra's perfection is attained by men.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.9.48.7)
mantrasiddhirbhavedyasya sa siddho jagatītale | sudhāsamaṁ viṣaṁ tasya dhanvantarisamo bhavet
He for whom the mantra's power is perfected becomes a perfected one on this earth; poison becomes to him as nectar, and he becomes equal to Dhanvantari.
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.9.48.8)
brahmansnātvā tu saṅkrāntyāṁ gūḍhaśālāsu yatnataḥ | āvāhya devīmīśānāṁ pūjayedyo'tibhaktitaḥ
O Brahmin, whoever, having bathed on a Sankranti day, carefully invokes the Devi, the sovereign lady, in a secluded hall, and worships her with the utmost devotion,
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.9.48.9)
pañcamyāṁ manasā dhyāyan devyai dadyācca yo balim | dhanavānputravāṁścaiva kīrtimānsa bhaved dhruvam
and whoever, meditating with his mind on the fifth day, offers a bali-offering to the Devi — he certainly becomes wealthy, blessed with sons, and renowned.
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.9.48.10)
pūjāvidhānaṁ kathitaṁ tadākhyānaṁ niśāmaya | kathayāmi mahābhāga yacchrutaṁ dharmavaktrataḥ
The manner of her worship has been told; now hear her story. I shall relate it, O most fortunate one, as heard from the mouth of Dharma.
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.9.48.11)
purā nāgabhayākrāntā babhūvurmānavā bhuvi | gatāste śaraṇaṁ sarve kaśyapaṁ munipuṅgavam
Of old, human beings on earth were overcome by fear of serpents; all of them went for refuge to Kashyapa, foremost of sages.
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.9.48.12)
mantrāṁśca sasṛje bhītaḥ kaśyapo brahmaṇānvitaḥ | vedabījānusāreṇa copadeśena brahmaṇaḥ
Kashyapa, himself alarmed, together with Brahma, composed mantras, following the seed-syllables of the Veda and by Brahma's own instruction.
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.9.48.13)
mantrādhiṣṭhātṛdevīṁ tāṁ manasā sasṛje tathā | tapasā manasā tena babhūva manasā ca sā
He created, through his mind, the presiding deity of that mantra; and because she was created through austerity and through the mind, she became "Manasa."
Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.9.48.14)
kumārī sā ca sambhūtā jagāma śaṅkarālayam | bhaktyā sampūjya kailāse tuṣṭāva candraśekharam
As she was born a maiden, she went to Shankara's abode; worshipping him with devotion on Kailasa, she praised Chandrashekhara.
Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.9.48.15)
divyavarṣasahasraṁ taṁ siṣeve ca muneḥ sutā | āśutoṣo maheśaśca tāṁ ca tuṣṭo babhūva ha
For a thousand divine years, the sage's daughter served him; and Mahesha, quick to be pleased, became satisfied with her.
Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.9.48.16)
mahājñānaṁ dadau tasyai pāṭhayāmāsa sāma ca | kṛṣṇamantraṁ kalpataruṁ dadāvaṣṭākṣaraṁ mune
He gave her great knowledge, taught her the Sama-veda; O sage, he gave her the Krishna-mantra, the wish-fulfilling tree, of eight syllables,
Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.9.48.17)
lakṣmīmāyākāmabījaṁ ṅe'ntaṁ kṛṣṇapadaṁ tataḥ | trailokyamaṅgalaṁ nāma kavacaṁ pūjanakramam
composed of the seed-syllables of Lakshmi, Maya, and Kama, ending in "ṅe", together with the word "Krishna"; and he gave the armor-hymn named "Trailokyamangala" and the sequence of her worship,
Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.9.48.18)
puraścaryākramaṁ cāpi vedoktaṁ sarvasammatam | prāpya mṛtyuñjayānmantraṁ sā satī ca muneḥ sutā
and the procedure of preliminary rites, all as taught in the Veda, accepted by all. Having obtained the mantra from Mrityunjaya, that virtuous daughter of the sage —
Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.9.48.19)
jagāma tapase sādhvī puṣkaraṁ śaṅkarājñayā | triyugaṁ ca tapastaptvā kṛṣṇasya paramātmanaḥ
— went, at Shankara's command, for austerity to Pushkara; and having performed austerity for three ages, in devotion to Krishna, the Supreme Soul,
Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.9.48.20)
siddhā babhūva sā devī dadarśa purataḥ prabhum | dṛṣṭvā kṛśāṅgīṁ bālāṁ ca kṛpayā ca kṛpānidhiḥ
that Devi became perfected, and beheld the Lord before her. Seeing that maiden with her body wasted by austerity, that Ocean of Compassion,
Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.9.48.21)
pūjāṁ ca kārayāmāsa cakāra ca svayaṁ hariḥ | varaṁ ca pradadau tasyai pūjitā tvaṁ bhave bhava
out of compassion, had her worship performed, and Hari himself performed it too; and he granted her a boon: "You shall be worshipped in every existence."
Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.9.48.22)
varaṁ dattvā tu kalyāṇyai tataścāntardadhe hariḥ | prathame pūjitā sā ca kṛṣṇena paramātmanā
Having granted the boon to that blessed one, Hari then vanished from sight. First she was worshipped by Krishna, the Supreme Soul;
Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.9.48.23)
dvitīye śaṅkareṇaiva kaśyapena sureṇa ca | muninā manunā caiva nāgena mānavādibhiḥ
second, by Shankara himself, by Kashyapa, and by the gods; by sages, by Manus, by serpents, and by human beings and the rest —
Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.9.48.24)
babhūva pūjitā sā ca triṣu lokeṣu suvratā | jaratkārumunīndrāya kaśyapastāṁ dadau purā
she, that woman of pure vows, became worshipped throughout the three worlds. Kashyapa gave her, of old, to Jaratkaru, the lord among sages.
Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.9.48.25)
ayācito muniśreṣṭho jagrāha brāhmaṇājñayā | kṛtvodvāhaṁ mahāyogī viśrāntastapasā ciram
That foremost of sages, though he had not asked for a wife, accepted her at Brahma's command. Having married, that great yogi, resting after his long austerity,
Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.9.48.26)
suṣvāpa devyā jaghane vaṭamūle ca puṣkare | nidrāṁ jagāma sa muniḥ smṛtvā nidreśamīśvaram
lay down to sleep upon the Devi's lap, at the root of a banyan tree in Pushkara; that sage fell asleep, remembering the Lord who presides over sleep.
Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.9.48.27)
jagāmāstaṁ dinakaraḥ sāyaṅkāla upasthite | sañcintya manasā sādhvī manasā sā pativratā
The sun went to its setting as evening approached. Reflecting with her mind, that pure-vowed, devoted wife, Manasa,
Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.9.48.28)
dharmalopabhayenaiva cakārālocanaṁ satī | akṛtvā paścimāṁ sandhyāṁ nityāṁ caiva dvijanmanām
out of fear of the lapse of dharma, that virtuous woman deliberated: "If my husband fails to perform the evening twilight rite, which is obligatory for the twice-born,
Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.9.48.29)
brahmahatyādikaṁ pāpaṁ labhiṣyati patirmama | nopatiṣṭhati yaḥ pūrvāṁ nopāste yastu paścimām
"— he will incur the sin equal to the killing of a Brahmin. Whoever does not attend to the morning rite, and whoever does not observe the evening one —
Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.9.48.30)
sa sarvatrāśucirnityaṁ brahmahatyādikaṁ labhet | vedoktamiti sañcintya bodhayāmāsa sundarī
"— he is ever impure everywhere, and incurs the sin of killing a Brahmin; thus it is declared in the Veda." Reflecting thus, that beautiful woman awakened him.
Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.9.48.31)
sa ca buddho muniśreṣṭhastāṁ cukopa bhṛśaṁ mune | muniruvāca | kathaṁ me sukhinaḥ sādhvi nidrābhaṅgaḥ kṛtastvayā
That foremost of sages, awakened, became greatly angry with her, O sage. The sage said: "How is it, O virtuous one, that you have broken the sleep of me, who was at ease?
Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.9.48.32)
vyarthaṁ vratādikaṁ tasyā yā bhartuścāpakāriṇī | tapaścānaśanaṁ caiva vrataṁ dānādikaṁ ca yat
"The vows and the rest of a woman who does harm to her husband are meaningless. Whatever austerity, fasting, vow, giving, and the rest —
Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.9.48.33)
bharturapriyakāriṇyāḥ sarvaṁ bhavati niṣkalam | yayā priyaḥ pūjitaśca śrīkṛṣṇaḥ pūjitastayā
"— of a woman who displeases her husband, all become fruitless. She who honors her beloved husband, by her Shri Krishna himself is honored.
Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.9.48.34)
pativratāvratārthañca patirūpo hariḥ svayam | sarvadānaṁ sarvayajñaḥ sarvatīrthaniṣevaṇam
"For the sake of the vow of a devoted wife, Hari himself takes the form of the husband. Every gift, every sacrifice, every visit to every sacred ford,
Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.9.48.35)
sarvaṁ vrataṁ tapaḥ sarvamupavāsādikaṁ ca yat | sarvadharmaśca satyaṁ ca sarvadevaprapūjanam
"every vow, all austerity, whatever fasting and the rest, every dharma, truth itself, and the worship of every god —
Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.9.48.36)
tatsarvaṁ svāmisevāyāḥ kalāṁ nārhati ṣoḍaśīm | puṇye ca bhārate varṣe patisevā karoti yā
"— all of this is not worth even a sixteenth part of the service of one's husband. In the sacred land of Bharata, whatever woman serves her husband —
Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.9.48.37)
vaikuṇṭhe svāminā sārdhaṁ sā yāti brahmaṇaḥ padam | vipriyaṁ kurute bharturvipriyaṁ vadati priyam
"— goes to Vaikuntha, together with her husband, to the very realm of Brahman. Whatever woman does what displeases her husband, or speaks unpleasant words to him,
Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.9.48.38)
asatkule prasūtā hi tatphalaṁ śrūyatāṁ sati | kumbhīpākaṁ vrajetsā ca yāvaccandradivākarau
"is indeed born of a wicked family; hear now, O virtuous one, the fruit of that: she goes to the hell of Kumbhipaka, and remains there as long as the moon and sun endure.
Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.9.48.39)
tato bhavati cāṇḍālī patiputravivarjitā | ityuktvā ca muniśreṣṭho babhūva sphuritādharaḥ
"Thereafter she is born a chandali, deprived of husband and sons." Having spoken thus, that foremost of sages, his lips quivering with anger, continued.
Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.9.48.40)
cakampe tena sā sādhvī bhayenovāca taṁ patim | sādhvyuvāca | sandhyālopabhayenaiva nidrābhaṅgaḥ kṛtastava
That virtuous woman trembled with fear at this, and spoke to her husband. The virtuous woman said: "Only out of fear that the twilight rite might be neglected did I break your sleep.
Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.9.48.41)
kuru śāntiṁ mahābhāga duṣṭāyā mama suvrata | śṛṅgārāhāranidrāṇāṁ yaśca bhaṅgaṁ karoti vai
"Be calm, O most fortunate one, toward me, though I have wronged you, O one of pure vows. Whoever breaks another's adornment, meal, or sleep,
Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.9.48.42)
sa vrajetkālasūtraṁ vai yāvaccandradivākarau | ityuktvā manasā devī svāminaścaraṇāmbuje
"he goes to the hell called Kalasutra, as long as the moon and sun endure." Having spoken thus, the Devi Manasa, at her husband's lotus feet,
Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.9.48.43)
papāta bhaktyā bhītā ca ruroda ca punaḥ punaḥ | kupitaṁ ca muniṁ dṛṣṭvā śrīsūryaṁ śaptumudyatam
fell down with devotion, frightened, and wept again and again. And seeing that angry sage ready to curse Shri Surya,
Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.9.48.44)
tatrājagāma bhagavānsandhyayā saha nārada | tatrāgatya muniṁ samyaguvāca bhāskaraḥ svayam
the Blessed One, O Narada, arrived there together with Sandhya; coming there, Bhaskara himself spoke rightly to the sage,
Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.9.48.45)
vinayena ca bhītaśca tayā saha yathocitam | bhāskara uvāca | sūryāstasamayaṁ dṛṣṭvā sādhvī dharmabhayena ca
humbly and fearfully, together with her, as befitted the occasion. Bhaskara said: "Seeing the time of sunset, and out of fear regarding dharma, that virtuous woman
Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.9.48.46)
bodhayāmāsa tvāṁ vipra śaraṇaṁ tvāmahaṁ gataḥ | kṣamasva bhagavanbrahman māṁ śaptuṁ nocitaṁ mune
"awakened you, O Brahmin. I have come to you for refuge. Forgive me, O Blessed Brahmin; it is not fitting, O sage, that you should curse me.
Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.9.48.47)
brāhmaṇānāṁ ca hṛdayaṁ navanītasamaṁ sadā | teṣāṁ kṣaṇārdhaṁ krodhaśca tato bhasma bhavejjagat
"The hearts of Brahmins are ever soft as fresh butter; if their anger lasted even half a moment, the whole world would be reduced to ashes.
Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.9.48.48)
punaḥ sraṣṭuṁ dvijaḥ śakto na tejasvī dvijātparaḥ | brāhmaṇo brahmaṇo vaṁśaḥ prajvalanbrahmatejasā
"A Brahmin has the power to create it anew; there is none more radiant than a Brahmin. A Brahmin is the very lineage of Brahman, blazing with the splendor of Brahman.
Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.9.48.49)
śrīkṛṣṇaṁ bhāvayennityaṁ brahmajyotiḥ sanātanam | sūryasya vacanaṁ śrutvā dvijastuṣṭo babhūva ha
"He should ever meditate upon Shri Krishna, the eternal light of Brahman." Hearing the Sun's words, the twice-born one became satisfied.
Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.9.48.50)
sūryo jagāma svasthānaṁ gṛhītvā brāhmaṇāśiṣam | tatyāja manasāṁ vipraḥ pratijñāpālanāya ca
The Sun, having received the Brahmin's blessing, went to his own abode. And the Brahmin, in order to fulfill his own vow, abandoned Manasa,
Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.9.48.51)
rudatīṁ śokasaṁyuktāṁ hṛdayena vidūyatā | sā sasmāra guruṁ śambhumiṣṭadevaṁ vidhiṁ harim
who wept, overcome with grief, her heart tormented. She then remembered her guru Shambhu, her chosen deity, the Creator, and Hari;
Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.9.48.52)
kaśyapaṁ janmadātāraṁ vipattau bhayakarśitā | tatrājagāma gopīśo bhagavācchambhureva ca
Kashyapa, her own father, tormented by fear in that calamity. And there arrived the Lord of the Gopis, the Blessed One, and Shambhu himself,
Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.9.48.53)
vidhiśca kaśyapaścaiva manasā paricintitaḥ | dṛṣṭvā vipro'bhīṣṭadevaṁ nirguṇaṁ prakṛteḥ param
and Brahma and Kashyapa too — all those upon whom Manasa had reflected. Seeing his chosen deity, beyond qualities, transcending Prakriti,
Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.9.48.54)
tuṣṭāva parayā bhaktyā praṇanāma muhurmuhuḥ | namaścakāra śambhuṁ ca brahmāṇaṁ kaśyapaṁ tathā
the Brahmin praised him with supreme devotion, and bowed to him again and again; he bowed also to Shambhu, to Brahma, and to Kashyapa likewise.
Verse 55 (devibhagavatam.9.48.55)
kathamāgamanaṁ devā iti praśnaṁ cakāra saḥ | brahmā tadvacanaṁ śrutvā sahasā samayocitam
He asked them: "O gods, how is it that you have come here?" Hearing his words, Brahma at once, fittingly for the occasion,
Verse 56 (devibhagavatam.9.48.56)
pratyuvāca namaskṛtya hṛṣīkeśapadāmbujam | yadi tyaktā dharmapatnī dharmiṣṭhā manasā satī
replied, having bowed to the lotus feet of Hrishikesha: "If you have abandoned your righteous wife, the virtuous, dutiful Manasa,
Verse 57 (devibhagavatam.9.48.57)
kuruṣvāsyāṁ sutotpattiṁ svadharmapālanāya vai | jāyāyāṁ ca sutotpattiṁ kṛtvā paścāttyajenmune
"then, for the observance of your own dharma, first beget a son upon her. Having begotten a son upon one's wife, O sage, one may thereafter renounce her —
Verse 58 (devibhagavatam.9.48.58)
akṛtvā tu sutotpattiṁ virāgī yastyajetpriyām | sravate tasya puṇyaṁ ca cālanyāṁ ca yathā jalam
"— but whoever, without begetting a son, renounces his beloved out of dispassion, his merit drains away, like water from an unsteady vessel."
Verse 59 (devibhagavatam.9.48.59)
brahmaṇo vacanaṁ śrutvā jaratkārurmunīśvaraḥ | cakāra nābhisaṁsparśaṁ yogena mantrapūrvakam
Hearing Brahma's words, Jaratkaru, that lord of sages, touched her navel through yogic power, preceded by mantra.
Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.9.48.60)
manasāyā muniśreṣṭha muniśreṣṭha uvāca tām | jaratkāruruvāca | garbheṇānena manase tava putro bhaviṣyati
That foremost of sages then spoke to Manasa. Jaratkaru said: "O Manasa, through this pregnancy a son shall be born to you —
Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.9.48.61)
jitendriyāṇāṁ pravaro dhārmiko brāhmaṇāgraṇīḥ | tejasvī ca tapasvī ca yaśasvī ca guṇānvitaḥ
"— foremost among the self-controlled, righteous, first among Brahmins; radiant, austere, renowned, and endowed with virtues;
Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.9.48.62)
varo vedavidāṁ caiva jñānināṁ yogināṁ tathā | sa ca putro viṣṇubhakto dhārmikaḥ kulamuddharet
"the finest among the knowers of the Veda, among the wise, and among yogis. That son, a devotee of Vishnu, righteous, shall deliver our whole lineage.
Verse 63 (devibhagavatam.9.48.63)
nṛtyanti pitaraḥ sarve janmamātreṇa vai mudā | pativratā suśīlā yā sā priyā priyavādinī
"By his birth alone, all our ancestors will dance with joy. She who is a devoted, virtuous wife is truly beloved, sweet of speech,
Verse 64 (devibhagavatam.9.48.64)
dharmiṣṭhā putramātā ca kulastrī kulapālikā | haribhaktiprado bandhurna cābhīṣṭasukhapradaḥ
"righteous, the mother of a son, a woman of good family who upholds the family. A true kinsman is one who bestows devotion to Hari — not merely one who gives desired pleasures.
Verse 65 (devibhagavatam.9.48.65)
yo bandhuścetsa ca pitā harivartmapradarśakaḥ | sā garbhadhāriṇī yā ca garbhāvāsavimocanī
"If one is truly a kinsman, he is like a father who shows the path to Hari. She alone is truly the bearer of the child who also frees it from future residence in a womb.
Verse 66 (devibhagavatam.9.48.66)
dayārūpā ca bhaginī yamabhītivimocanī | viṣṇumantrapradātā ca sa gururviṣṇubhaktidaḥ
"A true sister is one of the form of compassion, who frees one from the fear of Yama. A true guru is one who gives the mantra of Vishnu, who bestows devotion to Vishnu.
Verse 67 (devibhagavatam.9.48.67)
guruśca jñānado yo hi yajjñānaṁ kṛṣṇabhāvanam | ābrahmastambaparyantaṁ tato viśvaṁ carācaram
"A true guru is one who gives knowledge — and that knowledge is meditation upon Krishna, from Brahma down to the very blade of grass, and beyond that, the whole moving and unmoving universe.
Verse 68 (devibhagavatam.9.48.68)
āvirbhūtaṁ tirobhūtaṁ kiṁ vā jñānaṁ tadanyataḥ | vedajaṁ yajñajaṁ yadyattatsāraṁ harisevanam
"He knows what appears and disappears; what other knowledge is there beyond that? Whatever is born of the Veda or born of sacrifice — its essence is the service of Hari.
Verse 69 (devibhagavatam.9.48.69)
tattvānāṁ sārabhūtaṁ ca hareranyadviḍambanam | dattaṁ jñānaṁ mayā tubhyaṁ sa svāmī jñānado hi yaḥ
"The very essence of all principles is Hari; anything else is a mere mockery. I have given you this knowledge; he alone is a true master who gives knowledge.
Verse 70 (devibhagavatam.9.48.70)
jñānātpramucyate bandhātsa ripuryo hi bandhadaḥ | viṣṇubhaktiyutaṁ jñānaṁ no dadāti ca yo guruḥ
"Through knowledge one is freed from bondage; he indeed is an enemy who binds one further. Whatever so-called guru does not give knowledge joined with devotion to Vishnu —
Verse 71 (devibhagavatam.9.48.71)
sa ripuḥ śiṣyaghātī ca yato bandhānna mocayet | jananīṁ garbhajakleśādyamayātanayā tathā
"— he is an enemy, a killer of his own disciple, since he does not free him from bondage. Just as a true mother frees her child from the suffering of the womb, and from the torment of Yama,
Verse 72 (devibhagavatam.9.48.72)
"— whoever fails to free his disciple thus, how can he be called a guru, a father, or a true kinsman? Whoever does not continually point out the path to Krishna, of the very nature of supreme bliss, imperishable —
Verse 73 (devibhagavatam.9.48.73)
na darśayedyaḥ satataṁ kīdṛśo bāndhavo nṛṇām | bhaja sādhvi paraṁ brahmācyutaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ ca nirguṇam
"— what kind of kinsman is he to men at all? Worship, O virtuous one, the supreme Brahman, the imperishable Krishna, beyond all qualities.
Verse 74 (devibhagavatam.9.48.74)
nirmūlaṁ ca bhavetpuṁsāṁ karma vai tasya sevayā | mayā chalena tvaṁ tyaktā kṣamasvaitanmama priye
"Through service to him, the very root of a man's karma is destroyed. By my own deceit have I abandoned you; forgive me for this, my beloved.
Verse 75 (devibhagavatam.9.48.75)
kṣamāyutānāṁ sādhvīnāṁ sattvātkrodho na vidyate | puṣkare tapase yāmi gaccha devi yathāsukham
"In virtuous women endowed with forgiveness, from the very quality of their goodness, there is no anger. I now go to Pushkara for austerity; go, O Devi, wherever pleases you.
Verse 76 (devibhagavatam.9.48.76)
śrīkṛṣṇacaraṇāmbhoje niḥspṛhāṇāṁ manorathāḥ | jaratkāruvacaḥ śrutvā manasā śokakātarā
"The desires of those who are without craving rest solely at the lotus feet of Shri Krishna." Hearing Jaratkaru's words, Manasa, stricken with grief,
Verse 77 (devibhagavatam.9.48.77)
sāśrunetrā ca vinayāduvāca prāṇavallabham | manasovāca | doṣo nāstyeva me tyaktuṁ nidrābhaṅgena te prabho
her eyes filled with tears, spoke humbly to her beloved: "There is truly no fault in me, that you should abandon me for breaking your sleep, my Lord.
Verse 78 (devibhagavatam.9.48.78)
yatra smarāmi tvāṁ nityaṁ tatra māmāgamiṣyasi | bandhubhedaḥ kleśatamaḥ putrabhedastataḥ param
"Wherever I remember you always, there you shall come to me. Separation from a kinsman is a darkness of affliction; separation from a son is worse still than that;
Verse 79 (devibhagavatam.9.48.79)
prāṇeśabhedaḥ prāṇānāṁ vicchedātsarvataḥ paraḥ | patiḥ pativratānāṁ tu śataputrādhikaṁ priyaḥ
"but separation from the lord of one's life-breath is worse than even the severing of life itself. For devoted wives, a husband is dearer than a hundred sons.
Verse 80 (devibhagavatam.9.48.80)
sarvasmāttu priyaḥ strīṇāṁ priyastenocyate budhaiḥ | putre yathaikaputrāṇāṁ vaiṣṇavānāṁ yathā harau
"He is dearer to women than anything else at all; for that he is called by the wise 'the beloved.' As dear as a son to those who have only one son, as dear as Hari to his devotees,
Verse 81 (devibhagavatam.9.48.81)
netre yathaikanetrāṇāṁ tṛṣitānāṁ yathā jale | kṣudhitānāṁ yathānne ca kāmukānāṁ ca maithune
"as dear as their one remaining eye to the one-eyed, as dear as water to the thirsty, as dear as food to the hungry, as dear as union to those overcome by desire,
Verse 82 (devibhagavatam.9.48.82)
yathā parasve caurāṇāṁ yathā jāre kuyoṣitām | viduṣāṁ ca yathā śāstre vāṇijye vaṇijāṁ yathā
"as dear as another's wealth to a thief, as dear as her lover to an unchaste woman, as dear as scripture to the learned, as dear as commerce to a merchant —
Verse 83 (devibhagavatam.9.48.83)
tathā śaśvanmanaḥ kānte sādhvīnāṁ yoṣitāṁ prabho | ityuktvā manasā devī papāta svāminaḥ pade
"— so is the beloved husband ever dear to the mind of virtuous women, my Lord." Having spoken thus, the Devi Manasa fell at her husband's feet.
Verse 84 (devibhagavatam.9.48.84)
kṣaṇaṁ cakāra kroḍe tāṁ kṛpayā ca kṛpānidhiḥ | netrodakena manasāṁ snāpayāmāsa tāṁ muniḥ
For a moment that Ocean of Compassion held her in his lap out of compassion; the sage bathed Manasa with the tears from his own eyes,
Verse 85 (devibhagavatam.9.48.85)
sāśru netrā muneḥ kroḍaṁ siṣeca bhedakātarā | tadā jñānena tau dvau ca viśokau sambabhūvatuḥ
and she, her eyes filled with tears, tormented by the fear of separation, wetted the sage's lap with her own tears. Then, through knowledge, both of them became free of sorrow.
Verse 86 (devibhagavatam.9.48.86)
smāraṁ smāraṁ padāmbhojaṁ kṛṣṇasya paramātmanaḥ | jagāma tapase vipraḥ svakāntāṁ samprabodhya ca
Remembering, again and again, the lotus feet of Krishna, the Supreme Soul, that Brahmin, having consoled his beloved wife, went forth for austerity.
Verse 87 (devibhagavatam.9.48.87)
jagāma manasā śambhoḥ kailāsaṁ mandiraṁ guroḥ | pārvatī bodhayāmāsa manasāṁ śokakarśitām
Manasa went to Kailasa, the abode of her guru Shambhu; Parvati comforted Manasa, who was worn with grief.
Verse 88 (devibhagavatam.9.48.88)
śivaścātīva jñānena śivena ca śivālayaḥ | supraśaste dine sādhvī suṣuve maṅgalakṣaṇe
And Shiva, with the utmost knowledge, and the auspicious abode of Shiva comforted her too. On a most auspicious day, at an auspicious moment, that virtuous woman gave birth,
Verse 89 (devibhagavatam.9.48.89)
nārāyaṇāṁśaṁ putraṁ taṁ yogināṁ jñānināṁ gurum | garbhasthito mahājñānaṁ śrutvā śaṅkaravaktrataḥ
to that son, a portion of Narayana, the guru of yogis and of the wise; while still in the womb he had heard great knowledge from the mouth of Shankara,
Verse 90 (devibhagavatam.9.48.90)
sambabhūva ca yogīndro yogināṁ jñānināṁ guruḥ | jātakaṁ kārayāmāsa vācayāmāsa maṅgalam
and thus he was born a lord among yogis, the guru of yogis and the wise. Shiva had the birth-rites performed and had auspicious recitations chanted;
Verse 91 (devibhagavatam.9.48.91)
vedāṁśca pāṭhayāmāsa śivāya ca śivaḥ śiśoḥ | maṇiratnakirīṭāṁśca brāhmaṇebhyo dadau śivaḥ
he had the child taught the Vedas, for the child's own welfare; and Shiva gave crowns of jewels and gems to the Brahmins.
Verse 92 (devibhagavatam.9.48.92)
pārvatī ca gavāṁ lakṣaṁ ratnāni vividhāni ca | śambhuśca caturo vedānvedāṅgānitarāṁstathā
Parvati gave a hundred thousand cows, and various jewels; and Shambhu had the child taught the four Vedas, the Vedangas, and other branches of learning —
Verse 93 (devibhagavatam.9.48.93)
bālakaṁ pāṭhayāmāsa jñānaṁ mṛtyuñjayaṁ param | bhaktirastyadhikā kānte'bhīṣṭadeve gurau tathā
— had the boy taught the supreme knowledge that conquers death. There was exceeding devotion in the beloved child toward his chosen deity and his guru;
Verse 94 (devibhagavatam.9.48.94)
yasyāstena ca tatputro babhūvāstīka eva ca | jagāma tapase viṣṇoḥ puṣkaraṁ śaṅkarājñayā
and because of that devotion, that son became known as Astika. He went, at Shankara's command, to Pushkara for austerity in devotion to Vishnu,
Verse 95 (devibhagavatam.9.48.95)
samprāpya ca mahāmantraṁ tataśca paramātmanaḥ | divyaṁ varṣatrilakṣaṁ ca tapastaptvā tapodhanaḥ
and, having obtained the great mantra from the Supreme Soul himself, that wealth-of-austerity performed austerity for three hundred thousand divine years.
Verse 96 (devibhagavatam.9.48.96)
ājagāma mahāyogī namaskartuṁ śivaṁ prabhum | śaṅkaraṁ ca namaskṛtya sthitvā tatraiva bālakaḥ
That great yogi then came to bow to Lord Shiva; having bowed to Shankara, the boy remained there.
Verse 97 (devibhagavatam.9.48.97)
sā cājagāma manasā kaśyapasyāśramaṁ pituḥ | tāṁ saputrāṁ sutāṁ dṛṣṭvā mudaṁ prāpa prajāpatiḥ
And Manasa went to the hermitage of Kashyapa, her father; seeing his daughter together with her son, Prajapati felt great joy.
Verse 98 (devibhagavatam.9.48.98)
śatalakṣaṁ ca ratnānāṁ bāhmaṇebhyo dadau mune | brāhmaṇānbhojayāmāsa so'saṅkhyān śreyase śiśoḥ
O sage, he gave ten million gems to the Brahmins; he fed countless Brahmins for the welfare of the child.
Verse 99 (devibhagavatam.9.48.99)
aditiśca ditiścānyā mudaṁ prāpa parantapa | sā saputrā ca suciraṁ tasthau tātālaye sadā
O scorcher of foes, Aditi, Diti, and the other wives of Kashyapa felt joy too; and she, together with her son, remained ever after for a long time in her father's home.
Verse 100 (devibhagavatam.9.48.100)
tadīyaṁ punarākhyānaṁ vakṣyāmi tanniśāmaya | athābhimanyutanaye brahmaśāpaḥ parīkṣite
I shall now relate her further story; listen to it. Then, upon Parikshit, the son of Abhimanyu, a Brahmin's curse
Verse 101 (devibhagavatam.9.48.101)
babhūva sahasā brahman daivadoṣeṇa karmaṇā | saptāhe samatīte tu takṣakastvāṁ ca dhakṣyati
fell suddenly, O Brahmin, through the fault of fate and of his own deed: "When seven days have passed, Takshaka shall burn you."
Verse 102 (devibhagavatam.9.48.102)
śaśāpa śṛṅgī tatraiva kauśikyāśca jalena vai | rājā śrutvā tatpravṛttiṁ nirvātasthānamāgataḥ
The boy-sage Shringi cursed him thus, right there, by the water of the Kaushiki river. Hearing of what had occurred, the king came to a place sheltered from the wind,
Verse 103 (devibhagavatam.9.48.103)
tatra tasthau ca saptāhaṁ deharakṣaṇatatparaḥ | saptāhe samatīte tu gacchantaṁ takṣakaṁ pathi
and remained there for seven days, intent on protecting his body. When the seven days had passed, Takshaka, going along the road,
Verse 104 (devibhagavatam.9.48.104)
dhanvantarirnṛpaṁ bhoktuṁ dadarśa gāmukaḥ pathi | tayorbabhūva saṁvādaḥ suprītiśca parasparam
saw Dhanvantari on the way, who was going to save the king from being consumed by his poison; and a conversation took place between them, with great friendliness toward one another.
Verse 105 (devibhagavatam.9.48.105)
dhanvantarirmaṇiṁ prāpa takṣakaḥ svecchayā dadau | sa yayau taṁ gṛhītvā tu santuṣṭo hṛṣṭamānasaḥ
Dhanvantari obtained a jewel, which Takshaka gave him of his own free will; he went away, taking it, satisfied, his mind delighted.
Verse 106 (devibhagavatam.9.48.106)
takṣako bhakṣayāmāsa nṛpaṁ taṁ mañcake sthitam | rājā jagāma tarasā dehaṁ tyaktvā paratra ca

saṁskāraṁ kārayāmāsa piturvai janamejayaḥ | rājā cakāra yajñaṁ ca sarpasatraṁ tato mune
Janamejaya performed the funeral rites for his father; and then, O sage, that king performed the sacrifice, the great serpent-sacrifice.
Verse 108 (devibhagavatam.9.48.108)
prāṇāṁstatyāja sarpāṇāṁ samūho brahmatejasā | sa takṣako vai bhītastu mahendraṁ śaraṇaṁ yayau
Countless serpents gave up their lives through the power of that Brahmin-fueled fire. Takshaka, in great fear, went for refuge to Mahendra.
Verse 109 (devibhagavatam.9.48.109)
sendraṁ ca takṣakaṁ hantuṁ vipravargaḥ samudyataḥ | atha devāśca sendrāśca sañjagmurmanasāntikam
The company of Brahmins prepared to destroy Takshaka along with Indra himself. Then the gods, together with Indra, went to Manasa,
Verse 110 (devibhagavatam.9.48.110)
tāṁ tuṣṭāva mahendraśca bhayakātaravihvalaḥ | tata āstīka āgatya yajñaṁ ca māturājñayā
and great Indra, distraught and stricken with fear, praised her. Then Astika, coming to the sacrifice by his mother's command,
Verse 111 (devibhagavatam.9.48.111)
mahendratakṣakaprāṇānyayāce bhūmipaṁ param | dadau varaṁ nṛpaśreṣṭhaḥ kṛpayā brāhmaṇājñayā
begged the supreme lord of the earth for the lives of Mahendra and Takshaka. That foremost of kings, out of compassion and at the command of the Brahmin, granted his boon.
Verse 112 (devibhagavatam.9.48.112)
yajñaṁ samāpya viprebhyo dakṣiṇāṁ ca dadau mudā | viprāśca munayo devā gatvā ca manasāntikam
Having completed the sacrifice, he joyfully gave dakshina to the Brahmins. And the Brahmins, the sages, and the gods, going to Manasa,
Verse 113 (devibhagavatam.9.48.113)

Verse 127 (devibhagavatam.9.48.127)
na kṣamaḥ prakṛte vaktuṁ guṇānāṁ gaṇanāṁ tava | śuddhasattvasvarūpā tvaṁ kopahiṁsādivarjitā

"I now perform your worship; may your affection ever increase. Although you, O Mother of the world, are eternally worshipped everywhere already,
Verse 131 (devibhagavatam.9.48.131)
tathāpi tava pūjāṁ ca vardhayāmi sureśvari | ye tvāmāṣāḍhasaṅkrāntyāṁ pūjayiṣyanti bhaktitaḥ

Verse 132 (devibhagavatam.9.48.132)

"or on the fifth day named for Manasa, or at the month's end, or day by day — their sons and grandsons and the rest shall flourish, and their wealth shall certainly increase.
Verse 133 (devibhagavatam.9.48.133)
yaśasvinaḥ kīrtimanto vidyāvanto guṇānvitāḥ | ye tvāṁ na pūjayiṣyanti nindantyajñānato janāḥ
"They shall be renowned, famed, learned, and endowed with virtues. But those people who do not worship you, and who out of ignorance revile you —
Verse 134 (devibhagavatam.9.48.134)
lakṣmīhīnā bhaviṣyanti teṣāṁ nāgabhayaṁ sadā | tvaṁ svayaṁ sarvalakṣmīśca vaikuṇṭhe kamalālayā
"— they shall be deprived of Lakshmi, and shall ever have fear of serpents. You yourself are the very Lakshmi of all, dwelling in the lotus in Vaikuntha;
Verse 135 (devibhagavatam.9.48.135)
nārāyaṇāṁśo bhagavāñjaratkārurmunīśvaraḥ | tapasā tejasā tvāṁ ca manasā sasṛje pitā
"and the Blessed Jaratkaru, that lord of sages, is a portion of Narayana. Your father created you through austerity, through splendor, and through the mind —
Verse 136 (devibhagavatam.9.48.136)
asmākaṁ rakṣaṇāyaiva tena tvaṁ manasābhidhā | manasādevi śaktyā tvaṁ svātmanā siddhayoginī
"— precisely for our protection, and for that you bear the name Manasa. O Devi Manasa, by your own power you are, in your own self, a perfected yogini.
Verse 137 (devibhagavatam.9.48.137)
tena tvaṁ manasādevī pūjitā vanditā bhava | ye bhaktyā manasāṁ devāḥ pūjayantyaniśaṁ bhṛśam
"For that you are the Devi Manasa; may you be worshipped and revered. Those gods who worship Manasa with devotion, continually and greatly —
Verse 138 (devibhagavatam.9.48.138)
tena tvāṁ manasāṁ devīṁ pravadanti manīṣiṇaḥ | satyasvarūpā devi tvaṁ śaśvatsatyaniṣevaṇāt
"— for that the wise call you the Devi Manasa. O Devi, you are of the very nature of Truth, through your eternal devotion to truth.
Verse 139 (devibhagavatam.9.48.139)
yo hi tvāṁ bhāvayennityaṁ sa tvāṁ prāpnoti tatparaḥ | indraśca manasāṁ stutvā gṛhītvā bhaginīvaram
"Whoever meditates upon you always, devoted to you alone, attains you." Having thus praised Manasa, and having received the boon of his sister —
Verse 140 (devibhagavatam.9.48.140)
prajagāma svabhavanaṁ bhūṣayā saparicchadam | putreṇa sārdhaṁ sā devī ciraṁ tasthau piturgṛhe
Indra returned to his own abode, together with his retinue, adorned with ornaments. That Devi, together with her son, remained for a long time in her father's house,
Verse 141 (devibhagavatam.9.48.141)
bhrātṛbhiḥ pūjitā śaśvanmānyā vandyā ca sarvataḥ | golokātsurabhirbrahman tatrāgatya supūjitām
ever worshipped by her brothers, honored and revered by all. O Brahmin, Surabhi came there from Goloka, and, having honored her well,
Verse 142 (devibhagavatam.9.48.142)
tāṁ snāpayitvā kṣīreṇa pūjayāmāsa sādaram | jñānaṁ ca kathayāmāsa gopyaṁ sarvaṁ sudurlabham
bathed her with milk and worshipped her with reverence; and she related to her all the secret and most rare knowledge.
Verse 143 (devibhagavatam.9.48.143)
tayā devaiḥ pūjitā sā svarlokaṁ ca punaryayau | indrastotraṁ puṇyabījaṁ manasāṁ pūjayetpaṭhet
Worshipped by her and by the gods, she then returned again to the world of heaven. Whoever recites this hymn of Indra, the very seed of merit, and worships Manasa —
Verse 144 (devibhagavatam.9.48.144)
tasya nāgabhayaṁ nāsti tasya vaṁśodbhavasya ca | viṣaṁ bhavetsudhātulyaṁ siddhastotro yadā bhavet
he has no fear of serpents, nor does anyone born in his lineage. Poison becomes to him as nectar, when the hymn's power has been made perfect in him.
Verse 145 (devibhagavatam.9.48.145)
pañcalakṣajapenaiva siddhastotro bhavennaraḥ | sarpaśāyī bhavetso'pi niścitaṁ sarpavāhanaḥ
By reciting it five hundred thousand times, a man attains the power of this hymn; he too becomes one who lies upon a serpent as his bed, and certainly one who has a serpent as his mount.
