The Deliverance of Ganga and the Others from Their Curse

Chapter 6All chaptersChapter 8

Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.9.7.1)

śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | ityuktvā jagatāṁ nātho virarāma ca nārada | atīva rurudurdevyaḥ samāliṅgya parasparam

Sri Narayana said: Having said this, the Lord of the worlds fell silent, O Narada; and the goddesses, embracing one another, wept exceedingly.

Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.9.7.2)

tāśca sarvāḥ samālokya krameṇocustadeśvaram | kampitāḥ sāśrunetrāśca śokena ca bhayena ca

Looking upon one another, all of them spoke in turn to that Lord, trembling with grief and fear, their eyes filled with tears.

Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.9.7.3)

sarasvatyuvāca | viśāpaṁ dehi he nātha duṣṭamājanmaśocanam | satsvāminā parityaktāḥ kuto jīvanti tāḥ striyaḥ

Sarasvati said: O Lord, withdraw this cruel curse, which brings grief for a whole lifetime; how indeed can women abandoned by a worthy husband go on living?

Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.9.7.4)

dehatyāgaṁ kariṣyāmi yogena bhārate dhruvam | atyunnato hi niyataṁ pātumarhati niścitam

I shall certainly, through yoga, give up my body there in Bharata; for one raised too high, a fall is fittingly certain to come.

Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.9.7.5)

gaṅgovāca | ahaṁ kenāparādhena tvayā tyaktā jagatpate | dehatyāgaṁ kariṣyāmi nirdoṣāyā vadhaṁ labha

Ganga said: O Lord of the world, for what offense have you cast me aside? I too shall give up my body — take upon yourself, then, the killing of an innocent.

Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.9.7.6)

nirdoṣakāminītyāgaṁ karoti yo naro bhuvi | sa yāti narakaṁ ghoraṁ kintu sarveśvaro'pi vā

Whatever man on earth abandons an innocent, beloved wife goes to a terrible hell — even were he the Lord of all himself.

Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.9.7.7)

padmovāca | nātha sattvasvarūpastvaṁ kopaḥ kathamaho tava | prasādaṁ kuru bhārye dve sadīśasya kṣamā varā

Padma said: My Lord, you are of the very nature of sattva — how then has this anger come upon you? Show grace to both these wives; forgiveness is the finest quality in a good lord.

Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.9.7.8)

bhārate bhāratīśāpādyāsyāmi kalayā hyaham | kiyatkālaṁ sthitistatra kadā drakṣyāmi te padam

By Bharati's curse, I shall go, in my portion, to Bharata; how long shall my stay be there, and when shall I see your feet again?

Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.9.7.9)

dāsyanti pāpinaḥ pāpaṁ sadyaḥ snānāvagāhanāt | kena tena vimuktāhamāgamiṣyāmi te padam

Sinners will instantly give me their sin the moment they bathe in me; by what means, freed from that, shall I return again to your feet?

Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.9.7.10)

kalayā tulasīrūpaṁ dharmadhvajasutā satī | bhuktvā kadā labhiṣyāmi tvatpādāmbujamacyuta

O unchanging one, having taken, in that portion, the form of Tulasi as the chaste daughter of Dharmadhvaja, when shall I attain your lotus feet once more?

Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.9.7.11)

vṛkṣarūpā bhaviṣyāmi tvadadhiṣṭhātṛdevatā | samuddhariṣyasi kadā tanme brūhi kṛpānidhe

I shall become a tree, of which you yourself shall be the presiding deity; O treasury of compassion, tell me when you will deliver me from that state.

Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.9.7.12)

gaṅgā sarasvatīśāpādyadi yāsyati bhārate | śāpena muktā pāpācca kadā tvāṁ ca labhiṣyati

If Ganga, by Sarasvati's curse, shall go to Bharata, when, freed from that curse and from sin, shall she attain you?

Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.9.7.13)

gaṅgāśāpena vā vāṇī yadi yāsyati bhāratam | kadā śāpādvinirmucya labhiṣyati padaṁ tava

Or if Vani, through Ganga's curse, shall go to Bharata, when, released from that curse, shall she attain your feet?

Verse 14 (devibhagavatam.9.7.14)

tāṁ vāṇīṁ brahmasadanaṁ gaṅgāṁ vā śivamandiram | gantuṁ vadasi he nātha tatkṣamasva ca te vacaḥ

O Lord, as for your telling Vani to go to Brahma's abode and Ganga to Shiva's temple — please forgive, and withdraw, that word of yours.

Verse 15 (devibhagavatam.9.7.15)

ityuktvā kamalā kāntapādaṁ dhṛtvā nanāma sā | svakeśairveṣṭanaṁ kṛtvā ruroda ca punaḥ punaḥ

Having said this, Kamala took hold of her beloved's feet and bowed before him; winding her own hair about them, she wept again and again.

Verse 16 (devibhagavatam.9.7.16)

(uvāca padmanābhastāṁ padmāṁ kṛtvā svavakṣasi | īṣaddhāsyaprasannāsyo bhaktānugrahakātaraḥ ||)|| śrībhagavānuvāca | tvadvākyamācariṣyāmi svavākyaṁ ca sureśvari | samatāṁ ca kariṣyāmi śṛṇu tvaṁ kamalekṣaṇe

The Blessed Lord said: O sovereign goddess, I shall honor both your word and my own; O lotus-eyed one, listen, I shall establish a balance between them.

Verse 17 (devibhagavatam.9.7.17)

bhāratī yātu kalayā saridrūpā ca bhārate | ardhā sā brahmasadanaṁ svayaṁ tiṣṭhatu madgṛhe

Let Bharati go, in her portion, taking river form, to Bharata; let half of her go to Brahma's abode, while she herself remains in my own house.

Verse 18 (devibhagavatam.9.7.18)

bhagīrathena sā nītā gaṅgā yāsyati bhārate | pūtaṁ kartuṁ tribhuvanaṁ svayaṁ tiṣṭhatu madgṛhe

Brought by Bhagiratha, Ganga shall go to Bharata to purify the three worlds; and she too shall herself remain in my own house.

Verse 19 (devibhagavatam.9.7.19)

tatraiva candramauleśca mauliṁ prāpsyati durlabham | tataḥ svabhāvataḥ pūtāpyatipūtā bhaviṣyati

There she shall also attain the rare crown of the moon-crested Shiva; and thereafter, though pure by her own nature, she shall become supremely pure.

Verse 20 (devibhagavatam.9.7.20)

kalāṁśāṁśena gaccha tvaṁ bhārate vāmalocane | padmāvatī saridrūpā tulasīvṛkṣarūpiṇī

O fair-eyed one, go, by a fraction of your portion, to Bharata — as the river Padmavati, and as the tree Tulasi.

Verse 21 (devibhagavatam.9.7.21)

kaleḥ pañcasahasre ca gate varṣe tu mokṣaṇam | yuṣmākaṁ saritāṁ caiva madgehe cāgamiṣyatha

When five thousand years of the Kali age shall have passed, liberation shall come to all of you, and to those rivers as well, and you shall return to my own house.

Verse 22 (devibhagavatam.9.7.22)

sampadā hetubhūtā ca vipattiḥ sarvadehinām | vinā vipattermahimā keṣāṁ padmabhave bhavet

O lotus-born one, adversity itself becomes the very cause of prosperity for all creatures; without adversity, whose greatness could ever come to be?

Verse 23 (devibhagavatam.9.7.23)

manmantropāsakānāṁ ca satāṁ snānāvagāhanāt | yuṣmākaṁ mokṣaṇaṁ pāpāddarśanātsparśanāttathā

Through the bathing of righteous souls who worship my mantra, and likewise through the mere sight and touch of them, you shall be freed from sin.

Verse 24 (devibhagavatam.9.7.24)

pṛthivyāṁ yāni tīrthāni santyasaṅkhyāni sundari | bhaviṣyanti ca pūtāni madbhaktasparśadarśanāt

O lovely one, the countless sacred fords that exist upon the earth shall themselves be purified by the touch and sight of my devotees.

Verse 25 (devibhagavatam.9.7.25)

manmantropāsakā bhaktā vibhramanti ca bhārate | pūtaṁ kartuṁ tārituṁ ca supavitrāṁ vasundharām

The devotees who worship my mantra wander through Bharata to purify further and to save that already sacred earth.

Verse 26 (devibhagavatam.9.7.26)

madbhaktā yatra tiṣṭhanti pādaṁ prakṣālayanti ca | tatsthānaṁ ca mahātīrthaṁ supavitraṁ bhaveddhruvam

Wherever my devotees dwell, and wherever they wash their feet, that place undoubtedly becomes a great sacred ford, supremely pure.

Verse 27 (devibhagavatam.9.7.27)

strīghno goghnaḥ kṛtaghnaśca brahmaghno gurutalpagaḥ | jīvanmukto bhavetpūto madbhaktasparśadarśanāt

Even the slayer of a woman, the slayer of a cow, the ingrate, the slayer of a brahmin, or one who defiles his teacher's bed becomes liberated while living and purified by the touch and sight of my devotees.

Verse 28 (devibhagavatam.9.7.28)

ekādaśīvihīnaśca sandhyāhīno'tha nāstikaḥ | naraghātī bhavetpūto madbhaktasparśadarśanāt

One who neglects the Ekadashi fast, who omits the daily twilight rite, the unbeliever, and even the murderer of a man become purified by the touch and sight of my devotees.

Verse 29 (devibhagavatam.9.7.29)

Verse 30 (devibhagavatam.9.7.30)

viśvāsaghātī mitraghno mithyāsākṣyasya dāyakaḥ | sthāpyāhārī bhavetpūto madbhaktasparśadarśanāt

The betrayer of trust, the betrayer of a friend, the giver of false testimony, and even one who devours what was placed in his trust become purified by the touch and sight of my devotees.

Verse 31 (devibhagavatam.9.7.31)

atyugravāndūṣakaśca jārakaḥ puṁścalīpatiḥ | pūtaśca vṛṣalīputro madbhaktasparśadarśanāt

The exceedingly violent man, the defiler, the adulterer, the husband of a promiscuous woman, and even the son of a low-born woman become purified by the touch and sight of my devotees.

Verse 32 (devibhagavatam.9.7.32)

śūdrāṇāṁ sūpakāraśca devalo grāmayājakaḥ | adīkṣito bhavetpūto madbhaktasparśadarśanāt

The cook for shudras, a devala who lives off temple offerings, a village priest for hire, and even one who has never received initiation become purified by the touch and sight of my devotees.

Verse 33 (devibhagavatam.9.7.33)

pitaraṁ mātaraṁ bhāryāṁ bhrātaraṁ tanayaṁ sutām | guroḥ kulaṁ ca bhaginīṁ cakṣurhīnaṁ ca bāndhavam

One's father, mother, wife, brother, son, daughter, one's teacher's family, sister, and a blind kinsman —

Verse 34 (devibhagavatam.9.7.34)

Verse 35 (devibhagavatam.9.7.35)

Verse 36 (devibhagavatam.9.7.36)

Verse 37 (devibhagavatam.9.7.37)

mahāpātakinaścaiva śūdrāṇāṁ śavadāhakaḥ | bhaveyurete pūtāśca madbhaktasparśadarśanāt

and one who cremates the corpses of shudras — all these great sinners too become purified by the touch and sight of my devotees.

Verse 38 (devibhagavatam.9.7.38)

mahālakṣmīruvāca | bhaktānāṁ lakṣaṇaṁ brūhi bhaktānugrahakātara | yeṣāṁ tu darśanasparśātsadyaḥ pūtā narādhamāḥ

Mahalakshmi said: O you who are ever eager to bestow grace upon your devotees, describe the marks of such devotees, by whose mere sight and touch even the vilest of men are instantly purified.

Verse 39 (devibhagavatam.9.7.39)

haribhaktivihīnāśca mahāhaṅkārasaṁyutaḥ | svapraśaṁsāratā dhūrtāḥ śaṭhāśca sādhunindakāḥ

Those who are devoid of devotion to Hari, filled with great pride, absorbed in self-praise, deceitful, treacherous, and given to slandering the saintly —

Verse 40 (devibhagavatam.9.7.40)

punanti sarvatīrthāni yeṣāṁ snānāvagāhanāt | yeṣāṁ ca pādarajasā pūtā pādodakānmahī

those by whose bathing all sacred fords are made pure, and by the dust of whose feet, and the water that has washed those feet, the earth itself is purified —

Verse 41 (devibhagavatam.9.7.41)

yeṣāṁ sandarśanaṁ sparśaṁ ye vā vāñchanti bhārate | sarveṣāṁ paramo lābho vaiṣṇavānāṁ samāgamaḥ

whose sight and touch all in Bharata long for — for all these, the supreme gain is nothing other than the company of the Vaishnavas.

Verse 42 (devibhagavatam.9.7.42)

Sacred fords are not mere water, nor are the gods mere clay and stone; those purify only over time, but ah, the devotees of Vishnu purify in an instant.

Verse 43 (devibhagavatam.9.7.43)

sūta uvāva mahālakṣmīvacaḥ śrutvā lakṣmīkāntaśca sasmitaḥ | nigūḍhatattvaṁ kathitumapi śreṣṭhopacakrame

Suta said: Hearing Mahalakshmi's words, Lakshmi's beloved, smiling, began to declare that deep and hidden truth, the most excellent of all.

Verse 44 (devibhagavatam.9.7.44)

śrībhagavānuvāca | bhaktānāṁ lakṣaṇaṁ lakṣmi gūḍhaṁ śrutipurāṇayoḥ | puṇyasvarūpaṁ pāpaghnaṁ sukhadaṁ bhuktimuktidam

The Blessed Lord said: O Lakshmi, the marks of my devotees, hidden within the scriptures and the Puranas, are themselves of the very nature of merit, destroy sin, bestow happiness, and grant both enjoyment and liberation.

Verse 45 (devibhagavatam.9.7.45)

sārabhūtaṁ gopanīyaṁ na vaktavyaṁ khaleṣu ca | tvāṁ pavitrāṁ prāṇatulyāṁ kathayāmi niśāmaya

It is of the very essence, and secret — not to be told to the wicked; but you are pure, dear to me as my own life, so I shall tell you — listen.

Verse 46 (devibhagavatam.9.7.46)

guruvaktrādviṣṇumantro yasya karṇe patiṣyati | vadanti vedāstaṁ cāpi pavitraṁ ca narottamam

He into whose ear the mantra of Vishnu has fallen from a teacher's mouth — him too the Vedas declare pure, and the foremost among men.

Verse 47 (devibhagavatam.9.7.47)

puruṣāṇāṁ śataṁ pūrvaṁ tathā tajjanmamātrataḥ | svargasthaṁ narakasthaṁ vā muktimāpnoti tatkṣaṇāt

By that birth alone, a hundred generations of his ancestors before him, whether dwelling in heaven or in hell, attain liberation at that very instant.

Verse 48 (devibhagavatam.9.7.48)

yaiḥ kaiścidyatra vā janma labdhaṁ yeṣu ca jantuṣu | jīvanmuktāstu te pūtā yānti kāle hareḥ padam

Whatever creatures, wherever born, may have been among his ancestors, all of them, liberated while living and purified, in due time attain the abode of Hari.

Verse 49 (devibhagavatam.9.7.49)

madbhaktiyukto martyaśca sa mukto madguṇānvitaḥ | madguṇādhīnavṛttiryaḥ kathāviṣṭaśca santatam

A mortal joined to devotion for me is liberated, and endowed with my own qualities; one whose very disposition is governed by my qualities, and who is ever absorbed in accounts of me —

Verse 50 (devibhagavatam.9.7.50)

madguṇaśrutimātreṇa sānandaḥ pulakānvitaḥ | sagadgadaḥ sāśrunetraḥ svātmavismṛta eva ca

who, at the mere hearing of my qualities, becomes filled with joy, his hair standing on end, his voice choked, his eyes filled with tears, forgetting even his own self —

Verse 51 (devibhagavatam.9.7.51)

na vāñchati sukhaṁ muktiṁ sālokyādicatuṣṭayam | brahmatvamamaratvaṁ vā tadvāñchā mama sevane

he desires neither mere happiness, nor liberation, nor the fourfold forms of liberation such as dwelling in my own realm, nor the state of Brahma, nor immortality — his only desire is for my service.

Verse 52 (devibhagavatam.9.7.52)

indratvaṁ ca manutvaṁ ca brahmatvaṁ ca sudurlabham | svargarājyādibhogaṁ ca svapne'pi ca na vāñchati

He does not even desire the status of Indra, or of a Manu, or the rarest state of Brahma; even in a dream he does not long for the enjoyments of heavenly rule and the like.

Verse 53 (devibhagavatam.9.7.53)

bhramanti bhārate bhaktāstādṛgjanma sudurlabham | madguṇaśravaṇāḥ śrāvyagānairnityaṁ mudānvitāḥ

Such devotees wander through Bharata — a birth exceedingly rare; hearing my qualities recounted, and through songs delightful to hear, they remain ever filled with joy.

Verse 54 (devibhagavatam.9.7.54)

te yānti ca mahīṁ pūtvā naraṁ tīrthaṁ mamālayam | ityevaṁ kathitaṁ sarvaṁ padme kuru yathocitam | tadājñayā tāstaccakrurharistasthau sukhāsane

They go to my own abode, purifying the earth, mankind, and the sacred fords as they pass. O Padma, thus has everything been told — now do as is fitting. By his command, the goddesses did accordingly, and Hari settled upon his seat of ease.
