Skandha 9 · Chapter 8
The Glory of the Kali Age, in the Dialogue of Narayana and Narada
Verse 1 (devibhagavatam.9.8.1)
śrīnārāyaṇa uvāca | sarasvatī puṇyakṣetramājagāma ca bhārate | gaṅgāśāpena kalayā svayaṁ tasthau hareḥ pade
Sri Narayana said: Sarasvati came, by her own portion, through Ganga's curse, to the sacred land of Bharata; yet she herself remained ever at the feet of Hari.
Verse 2 (devibhagavatam.9.8.2)
bhāratī bhārataṁ gatvā brāhmī ca brahmaṇaḥ priyā | vāṇyadhiṣṭhātṛdevī sā tena vāṇī prakīrtitā
Bharati, having gone to Bharata, is also Brahmi, the beloved of Brahma; she is the presiding deity of speech, and for that reason is called Vani.
Verse 3 (devibhagavatam.9.8.3)
saro vāpyāṁ ca srotastu sarvatraiva hi dṛśyate | hariḥ sarasvāṁstasyeyaṁ tena nāmnā sarasvatī
In lake, in stepwell, and in flowing stream, she is seen everywhere; Hari is called "Sarasvan," and being his consort, she thus became renowned by the name "Sarasvati."
Verse 4 (devibhagavatam.9.8.4)
sarasvatī nadī sā ca tīrtharūpātipāvanī | pāpināṁ pāpadāhāya jvaladagnisvarūpiṇī
That river Sarasvati, of the very form of a sacred ford, is exceedingly purifying; to burn away the sins of sinners she is like blazing fire.
Verse 5 (devibhagavatam.9.8.5)
paścādbhāgīrathī nītā mahīṁ bhagīrathena ca | sā vai jagāma kalayā vāṇīśāpena nārada
O Narada, after that, Bhagirathi was brought to the earth by Bhagiratha; she indeed went there, in her portion, by Vani's curse.
Verse 6 (devibhagavatam.9.8.6)
tatraiva samaye tāṁ ca dadhāra śirasā śivaḥ | vegaṁ soḍhumayaṁ śakto bhuvaḥ prārthanayā vibhuḥ
At that very time Shiva bore her upon his own head; that all-pervading Lord alone was capable of bearing her force, at the earth's own entreaty.
Verse 7 (devibhagavatam.9.8.7)
padmā jagāma kalayā sā ca padmāvatī nadī | bhārataṁ bhāratīśāpātsvayaṁ tasthau hareḥ pade
Padma went, in her portion, as the river Padmavati, to Bharata, through Bharati's curse; yet she herself remained ever at the feet of Hari.
Verse 8 (devibhagavatam.9.8.8)
tato'nyayā sā kalayā lebhe janma ca bhārate | dharmadhvajasutā lakṣmīrvikhyātā tulasīti ca
Thereafter, by another portion, she took birth in Bharata as Lakshmi, daughter of Dharmadhvaja, renowned by the name "Tulasi."
Verse 9 (devibhagavatam.9.8.9)
purā sarasvatīśāpātpaścācca hariśāpataḥ | babhūva vṛkṣarūpā sā kalayā viśvapāvanī
First through Sarasvati's curse, and then through Hari's own curse, she, purifier of the universe, became, in that portion, a tree.
Verse 10 (devibhagavatam.9.8.10)
kaleḥ pañcasahasraṁ ca varṣaṁ sthitvā tu bhārate | jagmustāśca saridrūpaṁ vihāya śrīhareḥ padam
Having remained in Bharata for five thousand years of the Kali age, all of them, giving up their river forms, went to the supreme abode of Sri Hari.
Verse 11 (devibhagavatam.9.8.11)
yāni sarvāṇi tīrthāni kāśīṁ vṛndāvanaṁ vinā | yāsyanti sārdhaṁ tābhiśca vaikuṇṭhamājñayā hareḥ
All the sacred fords, except Kashi and Vrindavana, shall go together with them, by Hari's command, to Vaikuntha.
Verse 12 (devibhagavatam.9.8.12)
śālagrāmaḥ śaktiśivau jagannāthaśca bhāratam | kalerdaśasahasrānte tyaktvā yānti nijaṁ padam
Shalagrama, Shakti, Shiva, and Jagannatha too, at the end of ten thousand years of the Kali age, shall leave Bharata behind and go to their own abodes.
Verse 13 (devibhagavatam.9.8.13)

kalau gate ca durdharṣe pravṛtte ca kṛte yuge | tapaḥsattvasamāyukto dharmaḥ pūrṇo bhaviṣyati
When that formidable Kali age has passed and the Krita age has begun, righteousness, joined with austerity and purity of sattva, shall become complete once more.
Verse 60 (devibhagavatam.9.8.60)
tapasvinaśca dharmiṣṭhā vedajñā brāhmaṇā bhuvi | pativratāśca dharmiṣṭhā yoṣitaśca gṛhe gṛhe
On earth, brahmins shall become ascetics, righteous, and versed in the Veda; in every home, women shall be devoted to their husbands and righteous.
Verse 61 (devibhagavatam.9.8.61)
rājānaḥ kṣatriyāḥ sarve viprabhaktā manasvinaḥ | pratāpavanto dharmiṣṭhāḥ puṇyakarmaratāḥ sadā
All kshatriya kings shall be devoted to brahmins, noble-minded, mighty, righteous, and ever engaged in meritorious deeds.
Verse 62 (devibhagavatam.9.8.62)
vaiśyā vāṇijyaniratā viprabhaktāśca dhārmikāḥ | śūdrāśca puṇyaśīlāśca dharmiṣṭhā viprasevinaḥ
Vaishyas shall be devoted to trade, devoted to brahmins, and righteous; shudras too shall be virtuous of nature, righteous, and devoted to the service of brahmins.
Verse 63 (devibhagavatam.9.8.63)
viprakṣatraviśāṁ vaṁśā devībhaktiparāyaṇāḥ | devīmantraratāḥ sarve devīdhyānaparāyaṇāḥ
The descendants of brahmins, kshatriyas, and vaishyas shall be devoted to the worship of the Goddess; all shall be absorbed in her mantra and devoted to her meditation.
Verse 64 (devibhagavatam.9.8.64)
śrutismṛtipurāṇajñāḥ pumāṁsa ṛtugāminaḥ | leśo nāsti hyadharmasya pūrṇo dharmaḥ kṛte yuge
Men shall be knowers of the scriptures, the law codes, and the Puranas, and shall approach their wives only in the proper season; in the Krita age there shall not be even the slightest trace of unrighteousness — righteousness shall be complete.
Verse 65 (devibhagavatam.9.8.65)
dharmastripācca tretāyāṁ dvipācca dvāpare tataḥ | kalau vṛtte caikapācca sarvaluptistataḥ param
In the Treta age, righteousness stands on three legs; in the Dvapara, on two; and in the Kali age it is reduced to only one leg; after that, it vanishes altogether.
Verse 66 (devibhagavatam.9.8.66)
vārāḥ sapta tathā vipra tithayaḥ ṣoḍaśa smṛtāḥ | tathā dvādaśa māsāśca ṛtavaśca ṣaḍeva ca
O brahmin, seven days of the week, sixteen lunar tithis are recorded, and likewise twelve months and six seasons.
Verse 67 (devibhagavatam.9.8.67)
dvau pakṣau cāyane dve ca caturbhiḥ praharairdinam | caturbhiḥ praharai rātrirmāsastriṁśaddinaistathā
Two fortnights, two solstitial courses, a day of four watches and a night of four watches, and a month of thirty days.
Verse 68 (devibhagavatam.9.8.68)
varṣaṁ pañcavidhaṁ jñeyaṁ kālasaṅkhyāvidhikrame | yathā cāyānti yāntyeva yathā yugacatuṣṭayam
In the sequence of the reckoning of time, the year should be known as fivefold; and just as the four ages come and go —
Verse 69 (devibhagavatam.9.8.69)
varṣe pūrṇe narāṇāṁ ca devānāṁ ca divāniśam | śatatraye ṣaṣṭhyadhike narāṇāṁ ca yuge gate
A full human year equals one day and night of the gods; when three hundred and sixty human years have passed —
Verse 70 (devibhagavatam.9.8.70)
devānāṁ ca yugaṁ jñeyaṁ kālasaṅkhyāvidāṁ matam | manvantaraṁ tu divyānāṁ yugānāmekasaptatiḥ
that is to be known as one year of the gods, according to those learned in the reckoning of time; a Manvantara equals seventy-one divine ages.
Verse 71 (devibhagavatam.9.8.71)
manvantarasamaṁ jñeyamāyuṣyañca śacīpateḥ | aṣṭāviṁśatime cendre gate brahmadivāniśam
The lifespan of Indra too should be known as equal to one Manvantara; when the twenty-eighth Indra has passed, one day-and-night of Brahma is complete.
Verse 72 (devibhagavatam.9.8.72)
aṣṭottaraśate varṣe gate pātaśca brahmaṇaḥ | pralayaḥ prākṛto jñeyastatrādṛṣṭā vasundharā
When one hundred and eight such years have passed, the fall of Brahma occurs, which should be known as the elemental dissolution; at that time the earth becomes utterly invisible.
Verse 73 (devibhagavatam.9.8.73)
jalaplutāni viśvāni brahmaviṣṇuśivādayaḥ | ṛṣayo jñāninaḥ sarve līnāḥ satye cidātmani
All the universes become submerged in water; Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and the rest, all the sages, and all the enlightened dissolve into the true, conscious Self.
Verse 74 (devibhagavatam.9.8.74)
tatraiva prakṛtirlīnā tatra prākṛtiko layaḥ | laye prākṛtike jāte pāte ca brahmaṇo mune
Prakriti too dissolves into that very Self — this is the elemental dissolution; O sage, when that elemental dissolution occurs, and Brahma falls —
Verse 75 (devibhagavatam.9.8.75)
nimeṣamātraṁ kālaśca śrīdevyāḥ procyate mune | evaṁ naśyanti sarvāṇi brahmāṇḍānyakhilāni ca
O sage, this entire span of time is said to be, for Shri Devi, but the blink of an eye; thus do all the countless cosmic eggs perish.
Verse 76 (devibhagavatam.9.8.76)
nimeṣāntarakālena punaḥ sṛṣṭikrameṇa ca | evaṁ katividhā sṛṣṭirlayaḥ katividho'pi vā
Within that very span of an eyeblink, the process of creation begins anew; thus, of how many kinds is creation, and of how many kinds is dissolution —
Verse 77 (devibhagavatam.9.8.77)
kati kalpā gatāyātāḥ saṅkhyāṁ jānāti kaḥ pumān | sṛṣṭīnāṁ ca layānāṁ ca brahmāṇḍānāṁ ca nārada
How many cycles have come and gone — O Narada, what person indeed knows the number of creations, of dissolutions, and of cosmic eggs?
Verse 78 (devibhagavatam.9.8.78)
brahmādīnāṁ ca brahmāṇḍe saṅkhyāṁ jānāti kaḥ pumān | brahmāṇḍānāṁ ca sarveṣāmīśvaraścaika eva saḥ
What person even knows the number of Brahmas and the rest within a single cosmic egg? The Lord of all these countless cosmic eggs is but one alone.
Verse 79 (devibhagavatam.9.8.79)
sarveṣāṁ paramātmā ca saccidānandarūpadhṛk | brahmādayaśca tasyāṁśāstasyāṁśaśca mahāvirāṭ
He is the Supreme Self of all, bearing the very form of being-consciousness-bliss; Brahma and the rest are his portions, and Mahavirat too is his portion.
Verse 80 (devibhagavatam.9.8.80)
tasyāṁśaśca virāṭ kṣudraḥ saiveyaṁ prakṛtiḥ parā | tasyāḥ sakāśātsañjāto'pyardhanārīśvarastataḥ
The lesser Virat too is his portion, and this same one is the supreme Prakriti; from her presence, then, arose the Lord who is half woman, half man.
Verse 81 (devibhagavatam.9.8.81)
saiva kṛṣṇo dvidhābhūto dvibhujaśca caturbhujaḥ | caturbhujaśca vaikuṇṭhe goloke dvibhujaḥ svayam
That very Krishna became twofold, two-armed and four-armed; in Vaikuntha he is four-armed, and in Goloka he himself is two-armed.
Verse 82 (devibhagavatam.9.8.82)
brahmāditṛṇaparyantaṁ sarvaṁ prākṛtikaṁ bhavet | yadyatprākṛtikaṁ sṛṣṭaṁ sarvaṁ naśvarameva ca
From Brahma down to a mere blade of grass, everything is a product of Prakriti; and whatever has been created out of Prakriti is, without exception, perishable.
Verse 83 (devibhagavatam.9.8.83)
evaṁvidhaṁ sṛṣṭihetuṁ satyaṁ nityaṁ sanātanam | svecchāmayaṁ paraṁ brahma nirguṇaṁ prakṛteḥ param
The cause of such creation, being true, eternal, everlasting, acting by its own free will, the Supreme Brahman, without attributes, and beyond Prakriti —
Verse 84 (devibhagavatam.9.8.84)
nirupādhi nirākāraṁ bhaktānugrahakātaram | karoti brahmā brahmāṇḍaṁ yajjñānātkamalodbhavaḥ
without any limiting condition, formless, ever eager to bestow grace upon devotees — it is by knowledge of him that lotus-born Brahma fashions the cosmic egg.
Verse 85 (devibhagavatam.9.8.85)
śivo mṛtyujjayaścaiva saṁhartā sarvasattvavit | yajjñānādyasya tapasā sarveśastu tapo mahān
Shiva, who is Mrityunjaya, the destroyer, and knower of all beings — it is by knowledge of him and by austerity toward him that Shiva became lord of all; his was a great austerity.
Verse 86 (devibhagavatam.9.8.86)
mahāvibhūtiyuktaśca sarvajñaḥ sarvadarśanaḥ | sarvavyāpī sarvapātā pradātā sarvasampadām
He is endowed with great glories, all-knowing, all-seeing, all-pervading, the preserver of all, and the bestower of every kind of prosperity.
Verse 87 (devibhagavatam.9.8.87)
viṣṇuḥ sarveśvaraḥ śrīmān yadbhaktyā yasya sevayā | mahāmāyā ca prakṛtiḥ sarvaśaktimayīśvarī
Vishnu, who is lord of all and majestic — it was by devotion and service to him that he became so; and Mahamaya, Prakriti, the sovereign made of every power —
Verse 88 (devibhagavatam.9.8.88)
saiva proktā bhagavatī saccidānandarūpiṇī | yajjñānādyasya tapasā yadbhaktyā yasya sevayā
that same goddess is proclaimed as Bhagavati, of the very form of being-consciousness-bliss — attained by knowledge of her, by austerity toward her, by devotion and service to her.
Verse 89 (devibhagavatam.9.8.89)
sāvitrī devamātā ca vedādhiṣṭhātṛdevatā | pūjyā dvijānāṁ vedajñā yajjñānādyasya sevayā
Savitri, mother of the gods and presiding deity of the Veda, worshipped by the twice-born and versed in the Veda — attained by knowledge of her, and service to her —
Verse 90 (devibhagavatam.9.8.90)
sarvavidyādhidevī sā pūjyā ca viduṣāṁ parā | yatsevayā yattapasā sarvaviśveṣu pūjitā
She is the presiding deity of all learning, supremely worshipped even by scholars — through service and austerity toward her, she is worshipped throughout all the worlds.
Verse 91 (devibhagavatam.9.8.91)
sarvagrāmādhidevī sā sarvasampatpradāyinī | sarveśvarī sarvavandyā sarveṣāṁ putradāyinī
She is the presiding deity of every village, the bestower of every prosperity, sovereign over all, revered by all, and the giver of sons to all.
Verse 92 (devibhagavatam.9.8.92)
sarvastutā ca sarvajñā sarvadurgārtināśinī | kṛṣṇavāmāṁśasambhūtā kṛṣṇaprāṇādhidevatā
She is praised by all, all-knowing, and the destroyer of every distress and affliction; she is born of Krishna's own left portion, and is the presiding deity of Krishna's very life-breath — this is Radhika.
Verse 93 (devibhagavatam.9.8.93)
kṛṣṇaprāṇādhikā premṇā rādhikā śaktisevayā | sarvādhikaṁ ca rūpaṁ ca saubhāgyaṁ mānagaurave
Radhika, dearer to Krishna in love than his own life, attained this through service to the Divine Power; her beauty, her good fortune, her honor and dignity surpass all others'.
Verse 94 (devibhagavatam.9.8.94)
kṛṣṇavakṣaḥsthalasthānaṁ patnītve prāpa sevayā | tapaścakāra sā pūrvaṁ śataśṛṅge ca parvate
Through service alone she attained her place upon Krishna's own breast as his wife; long ago she performed austerity upon Mount Shatashringa.
Verse 95 (devibhagavatam.9.8.95)
divyavarṣasahasraṁ ca patiṁ prāptyarthameva ca | jāte śaktiprasāde tu dṛṣṭvā candrakalopamām
for a thousand divine years, solely for the sake of attaining her Lord; when the Divine Power's grace descended, and beholding her, fair as a sliver of the moon —
Verse 96 (devibhagavatam.9.8.96)
kṛṣṇo vakṣaḥsthale kṛtvā ruroda kṛpayā vibhuḥ | varaṁ tasyai dadau sāraṁ sarveṣāmapi durlabham
Krishna, placing her upon his own breast, that all-pervading Lord wept out of compassion; and he gave her a boon, the very essence, rare for anyone else to attain.
Verse 97 (devibhagavatam.9.8.97)
mama vakṣaḥsthale tiṣṭha mama bhaktā ca śāśvatī | saubhāgyena ca mānena premṇātho gauraveṇa ca
Remain forever upon my breast, be my eternal devotee; in good fortune, in honor, in love, and in dignity —
Verse 98 (devibhagavatam.9.8.98)
tvaṁ me śreṣṭhā ca jyeṣṭhā ca preyasī sarvayoṣitām | variṣṭhā ca gariṣṭhā ca saṁstutā pūjitā mayā
You are to me the finest, the foremost, the most beloved of all women, most excellent, most exalted, praised and worshipped by me.
Verse 99 (devibhagavatam.9.8.99)
satataṁ tava sādhyo'haṁ vaśyaśca prāṇavallabhe | ityuktvā ca jagannāthaścakāra lalanāṁ tataḥ
O beloved of my life, I shall ever be attainable to you, and under your sway — so saying, the Lord of the world made her his own beloved.
Verse 100 (devibhagavatam.9.8.100)
sapatnīrahitāṁ tāṁ ca cakāra prāṇavallabhām | anyā yā yāśca tā devyaḥ pūjitāḥ śaktisevayā
He made her his beloved without rival, without any co-wife; whatever other goddesses there are, they too came to be worshipped through service to the Divine Power.
Verse 101 (devibhagavatam.9.8.101)
tapastu yādṛśaṁ yāsāṁ tādṛktādṛkphalaṁ mune | divyavarṣasahasraṁ ca tapastaptvā himācale
O sage, whatever the austerity of each, such was the fruit each obtained; having performed austerity for a thousand divine years upon the Himalaya —
Verse 102 (devibhagavatam.9.8.102)
durgā ca tatpadaṁ dhyātvā sarvapūjyā babhūva ha | sarasvatī tapastaptvā parvate gandhamādane
Durga, by meditating upon that Lord's own state, became worshipped by all; Sarasvati, having performed austerity upon Mount Gandhamadana —
Verse 103 (devibhagavatam.9.8.103)
lakṣavarṣaṁ ca divyaṁ ca sarvavandyā babhūva sā | lakṣmīryugaśataṁ divyaṁ tapastaptvā ca puṣkare
for a hundred thousand divine years, became revered by all; Lakshmi, having performed austerity at Pushkara for a hundred divine ages —
Verse 104 (devibhagavatam.9.8.104)
sarvasampatpradātrī ca jātā devīniṣevaṇāt | sāvitrī malaye taptvā pūjyā vandyā babhūva sā
through service to the Goddess, became the bestower of every prosperity; Savitri, having performed austerity upon the Malaya mountain, became worshipped and revered.
Verse 105 (devibhagavatam.9.8.105)
ṣaṣṭivarṣasahasraṁ ca divyaṁ dhyātvā ca tatpadam | śatamanvantaraṁ taptaṁ śaṅkareṇa purā vibho
having meditated for sixty thousand divine years upon that state; O mighty one, in ancient times Shankara performed austerity for a hundred Manvantaras.
Verse 106 (devibhagavatam.9.8.106)
śatamanvantaraṁ cedaṁ brahmā śaktiṁ jajāpa ha | śatamanvantaraṁ viṣṇustaptvā pātā babhūva ha
For a hundred Manvantaras Brahma recited the mantra of the Divine Power; Vishnu, having performed austerity for a hundred Manvantaras, became the preserver.
Verse 107 (devibhagavatam.9.8.107)
daśamanvantaraṁ taptvā śrīkṛṣṇaḥ paramaṁ tapaḥ | golokaṁ prāptavāndivyaṁ modate'dyāpi yatra hi
Sri Krishna, having performed supreme austerity for ten Manvantaras, attained the divine Goloka, where indeed he still rejoices to this day.
Verse 108 (devibhagavatam.9.8.108)
daśamanvantaraṁ dharmastaptvā vai bhaktisaṁyutaḥ | sarvaprāṇaḥ sarvapūjyaḥ sarvādhāro babhūva saḥ
Dharma, joined with devotion, having performed austerity for ten Manvantaras, became the very breath of all, worshipped by all, and the support of all.
Verse 109 (devibhagavatam.9.8.109)
evaṁ devyāśca tapasā sarve devāśca pūjitāḥ | munayo manavo bhūpā brāhmaṇāścaiva pūjitāḥ
Thus, through austerity toward the Goddess, all the gods came to be worshipped; sages, Manus, kings, and brahmins likewise came to be worshipped.
Verse 110 (devibhagavatam.9.8.110)
evaṁ te kathitaṁ sarvaṁ purāṇaṁ sayathāgamam | guruvaktrādyathā jñātaṁ kiṁ bhūyaḥ śrotumicchasi
Thus has this entire Purana been told to you, in keeping with tradition, just as I learned it from the mouth of my own teacher; what more do you now wish to hear?
