The Vows of the Lunar Days and Other Observances

Verse 1 (garuda.1.116.1)

ब्रह्मोवाच । व्रतानि व्यास वक्ष्यामि हरिर्यैः सर्वदो भवेत् । सर्वमासर्क्षतिथिषु वारेषु हरिरर्चितः

brahmovāca vratāni vyāsa vakṣyāmi hariryaiḥ sarvado bhavet sarvamāsarkṣatithiṣu vāreṣu harirarcitaḥ

Brahma said: O Vyasa, I shall declare the vows by which Hari becomes the giver of all things. In every month, under every asterism, lunar day, and weekday, Hari is worshipped in his respective form.

Verse 2 (garuda.1.116.2)

एकभक्तेन नक्तेन उपवासफलादिना । ददाति धनधान्यादि पुत्रराज्यजयादिकम्

ekabhaktena naktena upavāsaphalādinā dadāti dhanadhānyādi putrarājyajayādikam

Through a single meal, a night-meal, fasting, and eating only fruit, this vow grants wealth, grain, sons, kingdom, and victory.

Verse 3 (garuda.1.116.3)

वैश्वानरः प्रतिपदि कुबेरः पूजितोऽर्थदः । उपोष्य ब्रह्मा प्रतिपद्यर्चितः श्रीस्तथाश्विनी

vaiśvānaraḥ pratipadi kuberaḥ pūjito'rthadaḥ upoṣya brahmā pratipadyarcitaḥ śrīstathāśvinī

On the first lunar day, Vaishvanara is worshipped; Kubera, worshipped, grants wealth. Having fasted, Brahma is worshipped on the first day, and likewise Shri and the Ashvins.

Verse 4 (garuda.1.116.4)

द्वितीयायां यमो लक्ष्मीनारायण इहार्थदः । तृतीयायां त्रिदेवाश्च गौरीविघ्नेशशङ्कराः

dvitīyāyāṁ yamo lakṣmīnārāyaṇa ihārthadaḥ tṛtīyāyāṁ tridevāśca gaurīvighneśaśaṅkarāḥ

On the second, Yama, and Lakshmi-Narayana grant wealth. On the third, the three gods, Gauri, Vighnesha, and Shankara are worshipped.

Verse 5 (garuda.1.116.5)

चतुर्थ्यां च चतुर्व्यूहः पञ्चम्यामर्चितो हरिः । कार्तिकेयो रविः षष्ठ्यां सप्तम्यां भास्करोऽर्थदः

caturthyāṁ ca caturvyūhaḥ pañcamyāmarcito hariḥ kārtikeyo raviḥ ṣaṣṭhyāṁ saptamyāṁ bhāskaro'rthadaḥ

On the fourth, the fourfold manifestation of Vishnu; on the fifth, Hari is worshipped. On the sixth, Karttikeya and the Sun; on the seventh, the Sun grants wealth.

Verse 6 (garuda.1.116.6)

दुर्गाष्टम्यां नवम्यां च मातरोऽथ दिशोऽर्थदाः । दशम्यां च यमश्चन्द्र एकादश्यामृषीन्यजेत्

durgāṣṭamyāṁ navamyāṁ ca mātaro'tha diśo'rthadāḥ daśamyāṁ ca yamaścandra ekādaśyāmṛṣīnyajet

On the eighth, Durga; on the ninth, the Mothers and the guardian deities of the directions grant wealth. On the tenth, Yama and the Moon; on the eleventh, one should worship the sages.

Verse 7 (garuda.1.116.7)

द्वादश्यां च हरिः कामस्त्रयोदश्यां महेश्वरः । चतुर्दश्यां पञ्चदश्यां ब्रह्मा च पितरोऽर्थदाः

dvādaśyāṁ ca hariḥ kāmastrayodaśyāṁ maheśvaraḥ caturdaśyāṁ pañcadaśyāṁ brahmā ca pitaro'rthadāḥ

On the twelfth, Hari and Kama; on the thirteenth, Maheshvara. On the fourteenth and fifteenth, Brahma and the ancestors grant wealth.

Verse 8 (garuda.1.116.8)

अमावास्यां पूजनीया वारा वै भास्करादयः । नक्षत्राणि च योगाश्च पूजिताः सर्वदायकाः

amāvāsyāṁ pūjanīyā vārā vai bhāskarādayaḥ nakṣatrāṇi ca yogāśca pūjitāḥ sarvadāyakāḥ

On the new-moon day, the ancestors are to be worshipped; the weekdays are ruled by the Sun and the other planets; the constellations and astrological yogas, when worshipped, grant everything.
