The Rishi-Ekadashi Vow

Verse 1 (garuda.1.135.1)

ब्रह्मोवाच । नवम्यामाश्विने शुक्ले एकभक्तेन पूजयेत् । देवीं विप्रंल्लक्षमेकञ्जपेद्वीरं व्रती नरः

brahmovāca navamyāmāśvine śukle ekabhaktena pūjayet devīṁ vipraṁllakṣamekañjapedvīraṁ vratī naraḥ

Brahma said: On the ninth day of the bright fortnight of Ashvina, one should worship the Goddess while eating but once; the votary should recite a mantra a hundred thousand times — this is the valiant Vira-Navami vow.

Verse 2 (garuda.1.135.2)

(ति वीरनवमीव्रतम्) । ब्रह्मोवाच । चैत्रे शुक्लनवम्यां च देवीं दमनकैर्यजेत् । आयुरारोग्यसौभाग्यं शत्रुभिश्चापराजितः

(ti vīranavamīvratam) brahmovāca caitre śuklanavamyāṁ ca devīṁ damanakairyajet āyurārogyasaubhāgyaṁ śatrubhiścāparājitaḥ

Brahma said: On the bright ninth day of Chaitra, one should worship the Goddess with damanaka flowers; thereby one obtains long life, health, and good fortune, and remains unconquered by enemies.

Verse 3 (garuda.1.135.3)

। ब्रह्मोवाच । दशम्यामेकभक्ताशी समान्ते दशधेनुदः । दिशश्च काञ्चनीर्दत्त्वा ब्रह्माण्डाधिपतिर्भवेत्

brahmovāca daśamyāmekabhaktāśī samānte daśadhenudaḥ diśaśca kāñcanīrdattvā brahmāṇḍādhipatirbhavet

Brahma said: Eating but once on the tenth day, and at its completion giving ten cows and golden images of the directions, one becomes lord of the whole universe.

Verse 4 (garuda.1.135.4)

ब्रह्मोवाच । एकादश्यामृषिपूजा कार्या सर्वोपकारिका । धनवान्पुत्रवांश्चान्ते ऋषिलोके महीयते

brahmovāca ekādaśyāmṛṣipūjā kāryā sarvopakārikā dhanavānputravāṁścānte ṛṣiloke mahīyate

Brahma said: On the eleventh day, worship of the sages should be performed, beneficial to all; one becomes wealthy and blessed with sons, and at the end is exalted in the world of the sages.

Verse 5 (garuda.1.135.5)

मरीचिरत्र्यं गिरसौ पुलसत्यः पुलहः क्रतुः । प्रचेताश्च वसिष्ठश्च भृगुर्नारद एव च

marīciratryaṁ girasau pulasatyaḥ pulahaḥ kratuḥ pracetāśca vasiṣṭhaśca bhṛgurnārada eva ca

Marichi, Atri, Angiras, Pulastya, Pulaha, Kratu, Pracetas, Vasishtha, Bhrigu, and Narada — these ten sages are to be worshipped.

Verse 6 (garuda.1.135.6)

चैत्रादौ कारयेत्पूजां माल्यैश्च दमनोद्भवैः । अशोकाख्याष्टमीप्रोक्ता वीराख्या नवमीतथा

caitrādau kārayetpūjāṁ mālyaiśca damanodbhavaiḥ aśokākhyāṣṭamīproktā vīrākhyā navamītathā

At the start of Chaitra one should perform this worship with garlands of damanaka; the eighth day is known by the name Ashoka, and likewise the ninth by the name Vira —

Verse 7 (garuda.1.135.7)

दमनाख्या दिग्दशमी नवम्येकादशी तथा

damanākhyā digdaśamī navamyekādaśī tathā

the tenth, called Damana, is linked with the directions; and the ninth and eleventh likewise complete this sequence of vows.
