Purvakhanda — Acharakanda · Chapter 137
Vows by Lunar Day, Weekday, and Asterism
Verse 1 (garuda.1.137.1)
brahmovāca kāmadevatrayodaśyāṁ pūjyo damanakādibhiḥ ratiprītisamāyukto hyasoko maṇibhūṣitaḥ
Brahma said: On the Trayodashi, Kamadeva should be worshipped with damanaka and similar offerings, accompanied by Rati and Priti, free of sorrow, adorned with jewels.
Verse 2 (garuda.1.137.2)
caturdaśyāṁ tathāṣṭabhyāṁ pakṣyoḥ śuklakṛṣṇayoḥ yo'bdamekaṁ na bhuñjīta muktibhākśivapūjanāt
On the fourteenth, and likewise on the eighth of both the bright and dark fortnights, whoever does not eat for a full year becomes a sharer in liberation through the worship of Shiva.
Verse 3 (garuda.1.137.3)
trirātropoṣito dadyātkārtikyāṁ bhavanaṁ śubham sūryalokamavāpnoti dhāmavratamidaṁ śubham
Fasting for three nights, one should give an auspicious dwelling on the full moon of Kartika; thereby one attains the world of the Sun — this is the auspicious Dhama-vrata, the vow of the abode.
Verse 4 (garuda.1.137.4)
amāvasyāṁ pitṝṇāṁ ca dattaṁ jalāditadakṣayam naktābhyāśī vāranāmnā yajanvārāṇi sarvabhāk
On the new-moon day, water and the like given to the ancestors becomes imperishable. One who eats at night while worshipping according to the names of the weekdays shares in the fruits of every weekday vow.
Verse 5 (garuda.1.137.5)
dvādaśarkṣāṇi viprarṣe ! pratimāsaṁ tu yāni vai tannāmnānte'tacyutaṁ teṣu samyaksaṁpūjayennaraḥ
O sage among Brahmins, in each month there are twelve governing asterisms; a man should duly worship the Unchanging One under the name associated with each.
Verse 6 (garuda.1.137.6)
keśavaṁ mārgaśīrṣe tu ityādau kṛtikādike (kā) ghṛtahomaścaturmāsaṁ kṛsarañca nivedayet
Keshava should be worshipped in Margashirsha, and so on beginning with the month governed by Krittika; for the four months of Chaturmasya one should offer ghee into the fire and present a sesame-and-rice dish as food-offering.
Verse 7 (garuda.1.137.7)
āṣāḍhādau pāyasaṁ tu viprāṁstenaiva bhojayet pañcāvyajalasnānanaivedyairnaktamācaret
At the start of Ashadha one should offer rice-pudding and feed Brahmins with the same; with the five products of the cow, water-bathing, and food-offerings, one should observe the night-eating vow.
Verse 8 (garuda.1.137.8)
arvāgvisarjanāddravyaṁ naivedyaṁ sarvamucyate visarjite jagannāthe nirmālyaṁ bhavati kṣaṇāt
Everything offered before the deity's dismissal is called naivedya; the instant the Lord of the world is dismissed, it becomes nirmalya, no longer fit to eat.
Verse 9 (garuda.1.137.9)
pāñcarātravido mukhyā naivedyaṁ bhuñjate svayam evaṁ saṁvatsarasyānte viśeṣeṇa prapūjayet
The foremost knowers of the Pancharatra doctrine themselves partake of the naivedya. Thus, at the end of the year, one should perform this worship with special care.
Verse 10 (garuda.1.137.10)
namonamaste'cyuta ! saṁkṣayo'stu pāpasya vṛddhiṁ samupaitu puṇyam aiśvaryavittādi sadākṣayaṁ me tathāstu me santatirakṣayaiva
Salutation, salutation to you, O Achyuta! May my sin come to destruction, may my merit increase; may lordship, wealth, and the rest be everlasting for me, and may my progeny be undying as well.
Verse 11 (garuda.1.137.11)
yathācyuta !tvaṁ parataḥ parasmātsa brahmabhūtaḥ parataḥ parasmāt tathācyutaṁ me kuru vāñchitaṁ sadā mayā kṛtaṁ pāpaharāprameya
As you, O Achyuta, are beyond the beyond, the very Brahman beyond the beyond, so, Achyuta, ever fulfill my wish, O boundless remover of the sin I have done.
Verse 12 (garuda.1.137.12)
acyutānanta ! govinda ! prasīda yadabhīpsitam tadakṣayamameyātmankuruṣva puruṣottama
O Achyuta, Ananta, Govinda! Be gracious; whatever is desired, make it imperishable, O immeasurable Self, O Purushottama.
Verse 13 (garuda.1.137.13)

saptamīṁ pūjayedviṣṇuṁ durgāṁ śambuṁ raviṁ kramāt teṣāṁ lokaṁ samāpnoti sarvakāmāṁśca nirmalaḥ
and on the Saptami worshipping in turn Vishnu, Durga, Shambhu, and the Sun, one attains their respective worlds and, purified, all one's desires.
Verse 15 (garuda.1.137.15)
