Vitality, Fire-Resistance, and Poison-Antidote Formulas
Verse 1 (garuda.1.182.1)
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १८२ हरिरुवाच । शरद्ग्रीष्मवसन्तेषु प्रायशो दधि गर्हितम् । हेमन्ते शिशिरे चैव वर्षासु दधि शस्यते
śrīgaruḍamahāpurāṇam 182 hariruvāca śaradgrīṣmavasanteṣu prāyaśo dadhi garhitam hemante śiśire caiva varṣāsu dadhi śasyate
Hari said: In autumn, summer, and spring, curd is generally censured; in early winter, late winter, and the rainy season, curd is recommended.
Verse 2 (garuda.1.182.2)
भुक्ते तु शर्करा पीता नवनीतेन बुद्धिकृत् । गुडस्य तु पुराणस्य पलमेकन्तु भक्षयेत् । स्त्रीसहस्रञ्च संगच्छेत्पुमान्बलयुतो हर !
bhukte tu śarkarā pītā navanītena buddhikṛt guḍasya tu purāṇasya palamekantu bhakṣayet strīsahasrañca saṁgacchetpumānbalayuto hara !
Sugar drunk with fresh butter after a meal increases intellect. One should eat one pala of old jaggery — by this, a man endowed with strength may unite even with a thousand women, O Hara!
Verse 3 (garuda.1.182.3)
कुष्ठं संचूर्णितं कृत्वा घृतमाक्षिकसंयुतम् । भक्षयेत्स्वप्नवेलायां बलीपलितनाशनम्
kuṣṭhaṁ saṁcūrṇitaṁ kṛtvā ghṛtamākṣikasaṁyutam bhakṣayetsvapnavelāyāṁ balīpalitanāśanam
Having powdered kushtha and combined it with ghee and honey, eating it at bedtime destroys wrinkles and grey hair.
Verse 4 (garuda.1.182.4)
अतसीमाषगोधूमचूर्णं कृत्वा तु पिप्पली । घृतेन लेपयेद्गत्रमोभिः सार्धं विचक्षणः । कन्दर्पसदृशो मर्त्यो नित्यं भवति शङ्कर !
atasīmāṣagodhūmacūrṇaṁ kṛtvā tu pippalī ghṛtena lepayedgatramobhiḥ sārdhaṁ vicakṣaṇaḥ kandarpasadṛśo martyo nityaṁ bhavati śaṅkara !
Powder of linseed, black gram, and wheat, together with pippali, should be applied with ghee to the limbs by the wise; a man so anointed becomes daily like Kandarpa (the god of love) himself, O Shankara!
Verse 5 (garuda.1.182.5)
यवास्तिलाश्वगन्धा च मुशली सरला गुडम् । एभिश्च रचितां जग्ध्वा तरुणो बलवान्भवेत्
yavāstilāśvagandhā ca muśalī saralā guḍam ebhiśca racitāṁ jagdhvā taruṇo balavānbhavet
Barley, sesame, ashwagandha, musali, sarala resin, and jaggery — eating a preparation made of these, a young man becomes strong.
Verse 6 (garuda.1.182.6)
हिङ्गु सौवर्चलं शुण्ठीं पीत्वा तु क्वथितोदकैः । परिणामाख्यशूलञ्च अजीर्णञ्चैव नश्यति
hiṅgu sauvarcalaṁ śuṇṭhīṁ pītvā tu kvathitodakaiḥ pariṇāmākhyaśūlañca ajīrṇañcaiva naśyati
Drinking asafoetida, sauvarchala salt, and dry ginger with boiled water destroys the colic called parinama (post-digestive pain) as well as indigestion.
Verse 7 (garuda.1.182.7)
धातकीं सोमराजीञ्च क्षीरेण सह पेषयेत् । दुर्बलश्च भवेत्स्थूलो नात्र कार्या विचारणा
dhātakīṁ somarājīñca kṣīreṇa saha peṣayet durbalaśca bhavetsthūlo nātra kāryā vicāraṇā
Dhataki and somaraji, ground together with milk and taken, make even a weak person stout — there should be no doubt of this.
Verse 8 (garuda.1.182.8)
शर्करामधुसंयुक्तं नवनीतं बली लिहेत् । क्षीराशी च क्षयी पुष्टिं मेधाञ्चैवातुलां व्रजेत्
śarkarāmadhusaṁyuktaṁ navanītaṁ balī lihet kṣīrāśī ca kṣayī puṣṭiṁ medhāñcaivātulāṁ vrajet
A strong person should lick fresh butter combined with sugar and honey; even one wasted by disease, if living on milk, attains nourishment and incomparable intellect.
Verse 9 (garuda.1.182.9)
कुलीरचूर्णं सक्षीरं पीतञ्च क्षयरेगनुत् । भल्लातकं विडङ्गञ्च यवक्षारञ्च सैन्धवम्
kulīracūrṇaṁ sakṣīraṁ pītañca kṣayareganut bhallātakaṁ viḍaṅgañca yavakṣārañca saindhavam
Powder of the crab, taken with milk, destroys wasting disease. Bhallataka, vidanga, barley-alkali, and rock salt,
Verse 10 (garuda.1.182.10)
मनः शिला शङ्खचूर्णं तैलपक्वं तथैव च । लोमानि शातयत्येव नात्र कार्या विचारणा
manaḥ śilā śaṅkhacūrṇaṁ tailapakvaṁ tathaiva ca lomāni śātayatyeva nātra kāryā vicāraṇā
manahshila, and conch-powder, cooked in oil likewise, remove body hair — there should be no doubt of this.
Verse 11 (garuda.1.182.11)
मालूरस्य रसं गृह्य जलौकां तत्र पेषयेत् । हस्तौ संलेपयेत्तेन त्वग्निस्तम्भनमुत्तमम्
mālūrasya rasaṁ gṛhya jalaukāṁ tatra peṣayet hastau saṁlepayettena tvagnistambhanamuttamam
Taking the juice of malura (bael) and grinding a leech in it, smearing both hands with this is an excellent means of resistance to fire.
Verse 12 (garuda.1.182.12)
शाल्मलीरसमादाय खरमूत्रे निधाय तम् । अग्नयादौ विक्षिपेत्तेन ह्यग्निस्तम्भनमुत्तमम्
śālmalīrasamādāya kharamūtre nidhāya tam agnayādau vikṣipettena hyagnistambhanamuttamam
Taking the juice of shalmali and placing it in donkey's urine, throwing it at the start of a fire produces an excellent means of resistance to fire.
Verse 13 (garuda.1.182.13)
वायस्या उदरं गृह्य मण्डूकवसया सह । गुटिकां कारयेत्तेन ततोऽग्नौ संक्षैपेत्सुधीः । एवमेतत्प्रयोगेण ह्यग्निस्तम्भनमुत्तमम्
vāyasyā udaraṁ gṛhya maṇḍūkavasayā saha guṭikāṁ kārayettena tato'gnau saṁkṣaipetsudhīḥ evametatprayogeṇa hyagnistambhanamuttamam
Taking a crow's belly together with frog's fat, one should make a pill of these, and the wise one should then cast it into fire — by this procedure, an excellent means of resistance to fire is achieved.
Verse 14 (garuda.1.182.14)
मुण्डीत्वक्च वचा मुस्तं मरिचं तगरं तथा । चर्वित्वा च त्विमं सद्यो जिह्वया ज्वलनं लिहेत्
muṇḍītvakca vacā mustaṁ maricaṁ tagaraṁ tathā carvitvā ca tvimaṁ sadyo jihvayā jvalanaṁ lihet
Having chewed mundi bark, vacha, musta, black pepper, and tagara, one may immediately lick burning fire with the tongue unharmed.
Verse 15 (garuda.1.182.15)
गोरोचनां भृङ्गराजं चूर्णोकृत्यघृतं समम् । दिव्याम्भसः स्तम्भनं स्यान्मन्त्रेणानेन वै तथा । ओं अग्निस्तम्भनं कुरु कुरु
gorocanāṁ bhṛṅgarājaṁ cūrṇokṛtyaghṛtaṁ samam divyāmbhasaḥ stambhanaṁ syānmantreṇānena vai tathā oṁ agnistambhanaṁ kuru kuru
Gorochana and bhringaraja, powdered and combined with an equal quantity of ghee, arrest sacred waters, and likewise by this mantra: 'Om, arrest the fire, arrest it.'
Verse 16 (garuda.1.182.16)
ओं नमो भगवते जलं स्तम्भय सं सं सं केक केकः चरचर । जलस्तम्भनमन्त्रोऽयं जलं स्तम्भयते शिव !
oṁ namo bhagavate jalaṁ stambhaya saṁ saṁ saṁ keka kekaḥ caracara jalastambhanamantro'yaṁ jalaṁ stambhayate śiva !
'Om namo bhagavate, jalaṁ stambhaya, saṁ saṁ saṁ, keka kekaḥ, chara chara.' This is the water-arresting mantra; it arrests water, O Shiva!
Verse 17 (garuda.1.182.17)
गृध्रास्थिञ्च गवास्थिञ्च तथा निर्माल्यमेव च । अरेर्यो निखनेद्द्वारे पञ्चत्वमु पयाति सः
gṛdhrāsthiñca gavāsthiñca tathā nirmālyameva ca areryo nikhaneddvāre pañcatvamu payāti saḥ
One who buries a vulture's bone, a cow's bone, and offering-remains at an enemy's door brings that enemy to his death.
Verse 18 (garuda.1.182.18)
पञ्चरक्तानि पुष्पाणि पृथग्जात्या समालभेत् । कुङ्कुमेन समायुक्तमात्मरक्तसमन्वितम्
pañcaraktāni puṣpāṇi pṛthagjātyā samālabhet kuṅkumena samāyuktamātmaraktasamanvitam
One should anoint, separately, five red flowers each of a different species, combined with saffron and one's own blood.
Verse 19 (garuda.1.182.19)
पुष्पेण तु समं पिष्ट्वा रोचनायाः पलैकतः । स्त्रिया पुंसा कृतो रुद्र ! तिलकोऽयं वशीकरः
puṣpeṇa tu samaṁ piṣṭvā rocanāyāḥ palaikataḥ striyā puṁsā kṛto rudra ! tilako'yaṁ vaśīkaraḥ
Grinding this equally with the flower, along with one pala of gorochana — this tilaka, applied by a woman or a man, O Rudra, is an attractant.
Verse 20 (garuda.1.182.20)
ब्रह्मदण्डी तु पुष्येण भक्ष्ये पाने वशीकरः । यष्टि मधु पलैकेन पक्वमुष्णोदकं पिबेत्
brahmadaṇḍī tu puṣyeṇa bhakṣye pāne vaśīkaraḥ yaṣṭi madhu palaikena pakvamuṣṇodakaṁ pibet
Brahmadandi, taken under the Pushya asterism, in food or drink, is an attractant. Licorice, one pala, cooked, should be drunk with hot water.
Verse 21 (garuda.1.182.21)
विष्टम्भिकाञ्च हृच्छूलं हरत्येव महेश्वर ! । ओं ह्रूं जः । मन्त्रोऽयं हरते रुद्र ! सर्ववृश्चिकजं विषम्
viṣṭambhikāñca hṛcchūlaṁ haratyeva maheśvara ! oṁ hrūṁ jaḥ mantro'yaṁ harate rudra ! sarvavṛścikajaṁ viṣam
This destroys constipation-colic and heart-pain, O Maheshvara! 'Om hrūṁ jaḥ' — this mantra, O Rudra, removes all poison arising from a scorpion's sting.
Verse 22 (garuda.1.182.22)
पिप्पली नवनीतञ्च शृङ्गवेरं च सैन्धवम् । मरिचं दधि कुष्ठञ्च नस्ये पाने विषं हरेत्
pippalī navanītañca śṛṅgaveraṁ ca saindhavam maricaṁ dadhi kuṣṭhañca nasye pāne viṣaṁ haret
Pippali, fresh butter, ginger, and rock salt, black pepper, curd, and kushtha — used as nasal drops or as a drink, remove poison.
Verse 23 (garuda.1.182.23)
त्रिफलार्द्रककुष्ठं च चन्दनं घृतसंयुतम् । एतत्पानाच्च लेपाच्च विषनाशो भवेच्छिव !
triphalārdrakakuṣṭhaṁ ca candanaṁ ghṛtasaṁyutam etatpānācca lepācca viṣanāśo bhavecchiva !
Triphala, ginger, kushtha, and sandalwood combined with ghee — by drinking this and applying it, poison is destroyed, O Shiva!
Verse 24 (garuda.1.182.24)
पारावतस्य चाक्षीणि हरितालं मनः शिला । एतद्योगाद्विषं हन्ति वैनतेय इवोरगान्
pārāvatasya cākṣīṇi haritālaṁ manaḥ śilā etadyogādviṣaṁ hanti vainateya ivoragān
Pigeon's eyes, orpiment, and manahshila — by this preparation, poison is destroyed just as Vainateya (Garuda) destroys serpents.
Verse 25 (garuda.1.182.25)
सैन्धवं त्र्यूषणं चैव दधिमध्वाज्यसंयुतम् । वृश्चिकस्य विषं हन्ति लेपोऽयं वृषभध्वज !
saindhavaṁ tryūṣaṇaṁ caiva dadhimadhvājyasaṁyutam vṛścikasya viṣaṁ hanti lepo'yaṁ vṛṣabhadhvaja !
Rock salt and the three pungents combined with curd, honey, and ghee — this paste destroys the poison of a scorpion, O Vrishabhadhvaja!
Verse 26 (garuda.1.182.26)
ब्रह्मदण्डीतिलान्क्वाथ्य चूर्णं त्रिकटुकं पिबेत् । नाशयेद्रुद्र ! गुल्मानि निरुद्धं रक्तमेव च
brahmadaṇḍītilānkvāthya cūrṇaṁ trikaṭukaṁ pibet nāśayedrudra ! gulmāni niruddhaṁ raktameva ca
Boiling brahmadandi and sesame, one should drink the powder of the three pungents — it destroys abdominal tumours, O Rudra, as well as obstructed blood.
Verse 27 (garuda.1.182.27)
पीत्वा क्षीरं क्षौद्रयुतं नाशयेदसृजः स्त्रुतिम् । आटरूपकमूलेन भगं नाभिं च लेपयेत् । सुखं प्रसूयते नारी नात्र कार्या विचारणा
pītvā kṣīraṁ kṣaudrayutaṁ nāśayedasṛjaḥ strutim āṭarūpakamūlena bhagaṁ nābhiṁ ca lepayet sukhaṁ prasūyate nārī nātra kāryā vicāraṇā
Drinking milk combined with honey destroys bleeding disorders. The root of atarupaka (vasa) should be applied as a paste to the private parts and navel — the woman gives birth with ease, there should be no doubt of this.
Verse 28 (garuda.1.182.28)
शर्करां मधुसंयुक्तां पीत्वा तण्डुलवारिणा । रक्तातिसारशमनं भवतीति वृषध्वज !
śarkarāṁ madhusaṁyuktāṁ pītvā taṇḍulavāriṇā raktātisāraśamanaṁ bhavatīti vṛṣadhvaja !
Drinking sugar combined with honey with rice-water pacifies bloody dysentery, O Vrishadhvaja!
