Verse 1 (garuda.1.184.1)

श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १८४ हरिरुवाच । रजनीकदलीक्षारलेपः सिध्मविनाशनः । कुष्ठस्य भागमेकन्तु पथ्याभागद्वयं तथा । उष्णोदकेन संपीय कटिशूलविनाशनम्

śrīgaruḍamahāpurāṇam 184 hariruvāca rajanīkadalīkṣāralepaḥ sidhmavināśanaḥ kuṣṭhasya bhāgamekantu pathyābhāgadvayaṁ tathā uṣṇodakena saṁpīya kaṭiśūlavināśanam

Hari said: A paste of turmeric and banana-ash destroys sidhma (a skin ailment). One part kushtha and two parts haritaki, drunk with hot water, destroys lower-back pain.

Verse 2 (garuda.1.184.2)

अभया नवनीतञ्च शर्करापिप्पलीयुतम् । पानादर्शोहरं स्याच्च नात्र कार्या विचारणा

abhayā navanītañca śarkarāpippalīyutam pānādarśoharaṁ syācca nātra kāryā vicāraṇā

Haritaki and fresh butter, combined with sugar and pippali — drinking this removes piles; there should be no doubt of this.

Verse 3 (garuda.1.184.3)

आटरूषकपत्रेण घृतं मृद्वग्निना पचेत् । चूर्णं कृत्वा तु लेपोऽयं अर्शरोगहरः परः

āṭarūṣakapatreṇa ghṛtaṁ mṛdvagninā pacet cūrṇaṁ kṛtvā tu lepo'yaṁ arśarogaharaḥ paraḥ

Ghee cooked with atarushaka leaf over gentle fire, made into a powder — this paste is an excellent remedy for piles.

Verse 4 (garuda.1.184.4)

गुग्गुलुत्रिफलायुक्तं पीत्वा नश्येद्भगन्दरम् । अजाजीशृङ्गवेरञ्च दथा मण्डं विपाचयेत्

guggulutriphalāyuktaṁ pītvā naśyedbhagandaram ajājīśṛṅgaverañca dathā maṇḍaṁ vipācayet

Drinking guggulu combined with triphala destroys bhagandara (anal fistula). One should cook cumin and ginger with curd in rice-gruel —

Verse 5 (garuda.1.184.5)

लवणेन तु संयुक्तं मूत्रकृच्छ्रविनाशनम् । यवक्षारं शर्करा च मूत्रकृच्छ्रविनाशकृत्

lavaṇena tu saṁyuktaṁ mūtrakṛcchravināśanam yavakṣāraṁ śarkarā ca mūtrakṛcchravināśakṛt

— combined with salt, this destroys painful urination (mutrakrichchhra). Barley-alkali and sugar likewise destroy painful urination.

Verse 6 (garuda.1.184.6)

चिताग्निः खञ्जरीटस्य विष्ठा फेनो हयस्य च । सौभाञ्जनं वासनेत्रं नर एतैस्तु धूपितः । अदृश्यस्त्रिदशैः सर्वैः किं पुनर्मानवैः शिव

citāgniḥ khañjarīṭasya viṣṭhā pheno hayasya ca saubhāñjanaṁ vāsanetraṁ nara etaistu dhūpitaḥ adṛśyastridaśaiḥ sarvaiḥ kiṁ punarmānavaiḥ śiva

The ash from cremating a khanjarita bird, horse's dung and foam, shobhanjana, and vasa-netra — a man fumigated with these becomes invisible even to all the gods, let alone to men, O Shiva!

Verse 7 (garuda.1.184.7)

तिलतैलं यवान्दग्ध्वा मषीं कृत्वा तु लेपयेत् । तेनैव सह तैलेन अग्निदग्धः सुखी भवेत्

tilatailaṁ yavāndagdhvā maṣīṁ kṛtvā tu lepayet tenaiva saha tailena agnidagdhaḥ sukhī bhavet

Burning sesame oil and barley to make a black soot and applying it as a paste, combined with the same oil, a person burnt by fire becomes comfortable.

Verse 8 (garuda.1.184.8)

लज्जालोः शरपुङ्खाया लेपः साज्योऽग्निनाशनः । ओं नमो भगवते ठ ठ छिन्धि छिन्धि ज्वलनं प्रज्वलितं नाशय नाशय हुं फट्

lajjāloḥ śarapuṅkhāyā lepaḥ sājyo'gnināśanaḥ oṁ namo bhagavate ṭha ṭha chindhi chindhi jvalanaṁ prajvalitaṁ nāśaya nāśaya huṁ phaṭ

A paste of lajjalu and sharapunkha combined with ghee destroys the effects of fire-burn. 'Om namo bhagavate ṭha ṭha, chindhi chindhi, jvalanaṁ prajvalitaṁ nashaya nashaya, huṁ phaṭ.'

Verse 9 (garuda.1.184.9)

करे बद्धं तु निर्गुण्ड्या मूलं ज्वरहरं द्रुतम् । मूलञ्च श्वेतगुञ्जायाः कृत्वा तत्सप्तखण्डकम्

kare baddhaṁ tu nirguṇḍyā mūlaṁ jvaraharaṁ drutam mūlañca śvetaguñjāyāḥ kṛtvā tatsaptakhaṇḍakam

The root of nirgundi, bound on the hand, quickly removes fever. The root of white gunja, cut into seven pieces,

Verse 10 (garuda.1.184.10)

हस्ते बध्वा नाशयेच्च अर्शांस्येव न संशयः । विष्णुक्रान्ताजमूत्रेण चौरव्याघ्नादिरक्षणम्

haste badhvā nāśayecca arśāṁsyeva na saṁśayaḥ viṣṇukrāntājamūtreṇa cauravyāghnādirakṣaṇam

— bound on the hand, destroys piles, without doubt. Vishnukranta combined with goat's urine protects against thieves, tigers, and the like.

Verse 11 (garuda.1.184.11)

ब्रह्मदण्ड्यास्तु मूलानि सर्वकर्माणि कारयेत् । त्रिफलायास्तु चूर्णं हि साज्यं कुष्ठविनाशनम्

brahmadaṇḍyāstu mūlāni sarvakarmāṇi kārayet triphalāyāstu cūrṇaṁ hi sājyaṁ kuṣṭhavināśanam

The roots of brahmadandi accomplish every task. Powder of triphala combined with ghee destroys kushtha.

Verse 12 (garuda.1.184.12)

आज्यं पुनर्नवाबिल्वैः पिप्पलीभि साधितम् । हरेद्धक्कां श्वासकासौ पीतं स्त्रीणाञ्च गर्भकृत्

ājyaṁ punarnavābilvaiḥ pippalībhi sādhitam hareddhakkāṁ śvāsakāsau pītaṁ strīṇāñca garbhakṛt

Ghee prepared with punarnava, bilva, and pippali removes hiccup, breathlessness, and cough; drunk by women, it promotes conception.

Verse 13 (garuda.1.184.13)

भक्षयेद्वा नरीबीजं पयसाज्येन पाचितम् । घृतशर्करया युक्तं शुक्रः स्यादक्षयस्ततः

bhakṣayedvā narībījaṁ payasājyena pācitam ghṛtaśarkarayā yuktaṁ śukraḥ syādakṣayastataḥ

One should eat nari-seed cooked in milk and ghee, combined with ghee and sugar — thereby the semen becomes inexhaustible.

Verse 14 (garuda.1.184.14)

विडङ्गं मधुकं पाठां मांसीं सर्जरसं तथा । रहिद्रां त्रिफलाञ्चैव मपामार्गं मनः शिलाम्

viḍaṅgaṁ madhukaṁ pāṭhāṁ māṁsīṁ sarjarasaṁ tathā rahidrāṁ triphalāñcaiva mapāmārgaṁ manaḥ śilām

Vidanga, licorice, patha, jatamamsi, and sarjarasa; turmeric, triphala, apamarga, and manahshila,

Verse 15 (garuda.1.184.15)

उदुम्बरं धातकीञ्च तिलतैलेन पषेयेत् । योनिं लिङ्गं च म्रक्षेत स्त्रीपुसोः स्यात्प्रियं मिथः

udumbaraṁ dhātakīñca tilatailena paṣeyet yoniṁ liṅgaṁ ca mrakṣeta strīpusoḥ syātpriyaṁ mithaḥ

— gular fig and dhataki should be ground with sesame oil. Applying this to the yoni and the linga produces mutual affection between man and woman.

Verse 16 (garuda.1.184.16)

नमस्ते ईशवरदाय आकर्षिणि विकर्षिणि मुग्धे स्वाहा इति । योनिलङ्गस्य तैलेन शङ्कर म्लक्षणात्ततः

namaste īśavaradāya ākarṣiṇi vikarṣiṇi mugdhe svāhā iti yonilaṅgasya tailena śaṅkara mlakṣaṇāttataḥ

'Namaste Ishvaradaya, akarshini vikarshini mugdhe svaha.' By applying that oil to the yoni and the linga, O Shankara, this effect follows thereafter.

Verse 17 (garuda.1.184.17)

पुनर्नवामृता दूर्वा कनकञ्चैन्द्रवारुणी । बीजे नैषां जातिकाया रसेन रसमर्दनम्

punarnavāmṛtā dūrvā kanakañcaindravāruṇī bīje naiṣāṁ jātikāyā rasena rasamardanam

Punarnava, guduchi, durva, kanaka, and indravaruni — with the juice of their seeds, together with nutmeg's juice, mercury should be triturated.

Verse 18 (garuda.1.184.18)

मूषाय मध्यगं कृत्वा रसं मारणमीरितम् । मध्वाज्यसहितं दुग्धं वलीपलितनाशनम्

mūṣāya madhyagaṁ kṛtvā rasaṁ māraṇamīritam madhvājyasahitaṁ dugdhaṁ valīpalitanāśanam

Placed in the middle of a crucible, the purificatory processing ('killing') of mercury is thus described. Milk combined with honey and ghee destroys wrinkles and grey hair.

Verse 19 (garuda.1.184.19)

मध्वाज्यं गुडताम्रञ्च कारवेल्लरसस्तथा । दहनाच्च भवेद्रौप्यं सुवर्णकरणं शृणु

madhvājyaṁ guḍatāmrañca kāravellarasastathā dahanācca bhavedraupyaṁ suvarṇakaraṇaṁ śṛṇu

Honey, ghee, jaggery, and copper, together with the juice of karavellaka — through calcination this becomes silver; now hear the method of making gold.

Verse 20 (garuda.1.184.20)

पीतं धरत्तूपुष्पञ्च सीसकञ्च पलं मतम् । लाङ्गलिकायाः शाखा च स्वर्णञ्च दहनाद्भवेत्

pītaṁ dharattūpuṣpañca sīsakañca palaṁ matam lāṅgalikāyāḥ śākhā ca svarṇañca dahanādbhavet

Dhattura flower taken as a drink, and lead measured to one pala; the branch of langalika — from these, through calcination, gold results.

Verse 21 (garuda.1.184.21)

धत्तूरबीजतैलेन दीपप्रज्वलनाद्धर । समाधावुपविष्टन्तु गगनस्थो न पश्यति

dhattūrabījatailena dīpaprajvalanāddhara samādhāvupaviṣṭantu gaganastho na paśyati

By kindling a lamp with the oil of dhattura seeds, O Hara, one seated in meditation, though present, is not seen by others.

Verse 22 (garuda.1.184.22)

वृषस्य मृन्मयस्यैव युक्तो भेको निगृह्यते । शङ्करावयवैर्युक्तो धूपं घ्रात्वा च गर्जति । विस्मयं कुरुते चैव वृषवन्नात्र संशयः

vṛṣasya mṛnmayasyaiva yukto bheko nigṛhyate śaṅkarāvayavairyukto dhūpaṁ ghrātvā ca garjati vismayaṁ kurute caiva vṛṣavannātra saṁśayaḥ

A frog joined to an earthen bull-figure is captured; upon smelling incense combined with substances sacred to Shankara, it begins to roar, and produces astonishment just like a real bull — there is no doubt of this.

Verse 23 (garuda.1.184.23)

रात्रौ च सार्षपं तैलं कीटं खद्यो तनामकम् । ताभ्यां दीपः प्रज्वलितो वाग्मिज्वालकलापवत्

rātrau ca sārṣapaṁ tailaṁ kīṭaṁ khadyo tanāmakam tābhyāṁ dīpaḥ prajvalito vāgmijvālakalāpavat

At night, mustard oil and the insect called khadyota (firefly) — a lamp lit with these produces light like a cluster of speaking flames.

Verse 24 (garuda.1.184.24)

चूर्णं छुच्छुन्दरीधं दग्ध्वा रुद्र प्रलेपयेत् । तप्यते तक्षणाद्दग्धो यदि सम्यक्प्रलेपयेत् । चन्दनेन भवेन्मोक्षः पानाल्लेपात्सुखी भवेत्

cūrṇaṁ chucchundarīdhaṁ dagdhvā rudra pralepayet tapyate takṣaṇāddagdho yadi samyakpralepayet candanena bhavenmokṣaḥ pānāllepātsukhī bhavet

Making a powder from the ash of a musk-shrew and applying it as a paste, O Rudra — if properly applied, one burnt by fire is instantly soothed; relief also comes through sandalwood, and through drinking and application one becomes comfortable.

Verse 25 (garuda.1.184.25)

कुञ्जरस्य मदाक्तस्य स्वयं नेत्रे शिववाञ्जयेत् । युद्धे विजयते सोऽपि महाशूरश्च जायते

kuñjarasya madāktasya svayaṁ netre śivavāñjayet yuddhe vijayate so'pi mahāśūraśca jāyate

One should apply, to one's own eyes, the ichor from the eyes of a rutting elephant, O Shiva — by this a person becomes victorious in battle and becomes a great hero.

Verse 26 (garuda.1.184.26)

दन्तं डुण्डुभसर्पस्य मुखे संगृह्य वै क्षिपेत् । तिष्ठते च जलान्तस्तु निर्विकल्पं स्थले यथा

dantaṁ ḍuṇḍubhasarpasya mukhe saṁgṛhya vai kṣipet tiṣṭhate ca jalāntastu nirvikalpaṁ sthale yathā

Taking the tooth of a dundubha snake and holding it in the mouth, one remains within water just as freely as on dry land, without difficulty.

Verse 27 (garuda.1.184.27)

कुम्भीरनेत्रदंष्ट्राश्च अस्थीनि रुधिरं तथा । वसातैलसमायुक्तमेकत्र तन्नियोजयेत् । आत्मानं म्लक्षयेत्तेन जले तिष्ठेद्दिनत्रयम्

kumbhīranetradaṁṣṭrāśca asthīni rudhiraṁ tathā vasātailasamāyuktamekatra tanniyojayet ātmānaṁ mlakṣayettena jale tiṣṭheddinatrayam

The eyes, fangs, bones, and blood of a crocodile, combined with its fat and oil — all these should be combined together. Anointing oneself with this, one may remain in water for three days.

Verse 28 (garuda.1.184.28)

कुम्भीरकस्य नेत्राणि हृदयं कच्छपस्य च । मूषिकस्य वसास्थीनि शिशुमारवसा तथा । एतान्येकत्र संलेपाज्जले तिष्ठेद्यथा गृहे

kumbhīrakasya netrāṇi hṛdayaṁ kacchapasya ca mūṣikasya vasāsthīni śiśumāravasā tathā etānyekatra saṁlepājjale tiṣṭhedyathā gṛhe

The eyes of a crocodile, the heart of a tortoise, the fat and bones of a mouse, and the fat of a porpoise — applying all these together, one may remain in water as comfortably as in one's own house.

Verse 29 (garuda.1.184.29)

लोहचूर्णं तक्रपीतं पाण्डुरोगहरं भवेत् । तण्डुलीय कगोक्षूरमूलं पीतं पयोन्वितम्

lohacūrṇaṁ takrapītaṁ pāṇḍurogaharaṁ bhavet taṇḍulīya kagokṣūramūlaṁ pītaṁ payonvitam

Iron powder taken with buttermilk destroys pandu roga (anemia). The root of tanduliya and gokshura, taken with milk,

Verse 30 (garuda.1.184.30)

कमलादिहरंपितं मुखरोगहरं तथा । जातीमूलं तक्रपीतं कोलमूलं त्वजीर्णनुत्

kamalādiharaṁpitaṁ mukharogaharaṁ tathā jātīmūlaṁ takrapītaṁ kolamūlaṁ tvajīrṇanut

— destroys kamala and the like, as well as mouth disease. The root of jati taken with buttermilk, and the root of kola, destroy indigestion.

Verse 31 (garuda.1.184.31)

सतक्रं कुशमलं वा मर्कटी मूलमेव वा । काञ्जिकेन च वाकुच्या मूलं वै दन्तरोगनुत्

satakraṁ kuśamalaṁ vā markaṭī mūlameva vā kāñjikena ca vākucyā mūlaṁ vai dantaroganut

With buttermilk, or with kusha root, or with markati root; the root of vakuchi taken with fermented rice-water destroys dental disease.

Verse 32 (garuda.1.184.32)

तथेन्द्रवारुणीमूलं वारिपीतं विषादिहृत् । सुरभिकामूलपा नाद्वा तन्नाशो भवेच्छिव

tathendravāruṇīmūlaṁ vāripītaṁ viṣādihṛt surabhikāmūlapā nādvā tannāśo bhavecchiva

Likewise the root of indravaruni, drunk with water, destroys poison and the like. Drinking the root of surabhika likewise destroys it, O Shiva.

Verse 33 (garuda.1.184.33)

शिरोरोगहरं लेपाद्गुञ्जाचूर्णं सकाञ्जिकम् । बला चातिबला यष्टी शर्करा मधुसंयुता

śirorogaharaṁ lepādguñjācūrṇaṁ sakāñjikam balā cātibalā yaṣṭī śarkarā madhusaṁyutā

A paste of gunja powder with fermented rice-water, applied to the head, destroys headache. Bala, atibala, and licorice, combined with sugar and honey —

Verse 34 (garuda.1.184.34)

वन्ध्यागर्भकरी पीता नात्र कार्या विचारणा । श्वेतापराजितामूलं पिप्पलीशुण्ठिकायुतम्

vandhyāgarbhakarī pītā nātra kāryā vicāraṇā śvetāparājitāmūlaṁ pippalīśuṇṭhikāyutam

— drunk, causes even a barren woman to conceive; there should be no doubt of this. The root of shvetaparajita combined with pippali and dry ginger,

Verse 35 (garuda.1.184.35)

परिपिष्टं शिरोलेपाच्छिरः शूलविनाशनम् । निर्गुण्डिकाशिखां पीत्वा गण्डमालां विनाशयेत्

paripiṣṭaṁ śirolepācchiraḥ śūlavināśanam nirguṇḍikāśikhāṁ pītvā gaṇḍamālāṁ vināśayet

— ground and applied as a paste to the head, destroys headache. Drinking the tip of nirgundika destroys gandamala (goitre).

Verse 36 (garuda.1.184.36)

केतकीपत्रजं क्षारं गुडेन सह भक्षयेत् । तक्रेण शरपुङ्खां वा पीत्वा प्लीहां विनाशयेत्

ketakīpatrajaṁ kṣāraṁ guḍena saha bhakṣayet takreṇa śarapuṅkhāṁ vā pītvā plīhāṁ vināśayet

One should eat the ash of ketaki leaf combined with jaggery. Drinking sharapunkha with buttermilk destroys spleen disease.

Verse 37 (garuda.1.184.37)

मातुलङ्गस्य निर्यासं गुडाज्येन समन्वितम् । वातपित्तजशूलानि हन्ति वै पानयोगतः । शुण्ठी सौवर्चलं हिङ्गु पीतं हृदयरोगनुत्

mātulaṅgasya niryāsaṁ guḍājyena samanvitam vātapittajaśūlāni hanti vai pānayogataḥ śuṇṭhī sauvarcalaṁ hiṅgu pītaṁ hṛdayaroganut

The exudate of citron combined with jaggery and ghee, when drunk, destroys colic caused by vata and pitta. Dry ginger, sauvarchala salt, and asafoetida, when drunk, destroy heart disease.
