Purvakhanda — Acharakanda · Chapter 197
The Garuda Mantra: Ritual Placement and Visualization
Verse 1 (garuda.1.197.1)
dhanvantariruvāca gāruḍaṁ saṁpravakṣyāmi garuḍena hyudīritam kaśyapāya sumitreṇa viṣahṛdyena gāruḍaḥ
Dhanvantari said: I shall now declare the Garuda teaching, as spoken by Garuda to Kashyapa through Sumitra — this is the Garuda knowledge that removes poison.
Verse 2 (garuda.1.197.2)
pṛthivyāpastathā tejo vāyurākāśamevaca kṣityādiṣveva vargāśca hyete vai maṇḍalādhipāḥ
Earth, water, fire, wind, and ether — these very elements are the presiding lords of the mandalas.
Verse 3 (garuda.1.197.3)
pañcatattve sthitā devāḥ prāpyante viṣṇusevakaiḥ dīrghasvaravibhinnāśca napuṁsakavivarjitāḥ
The deities abiding in the five elements are attained by the servants of Vishnu; their mantras are marked by long vowels and are free of neuter gender.
Verse 4 (garuda.1.197.4)
saṣaḍaṅgaḥ śivaḥ prokto hṛcchiraśca śikhā kramāt kavacaṁ netramastraṁ syānnyāsaḥ svasthalasaṁsthitiḥ
Shiva, together with his six limbs, is declared in order as heart, head, top-knot, armor, eye, and weapon — this is the placement (nyasa), each residing in its own proper place.
Verse 5 (garuda.1.197.5)
sarvasiddhipradasyānte kālavahnira dho'nilaḥ ṣaṣṭhasvarasamāyuktamardhendusaṁyutaṁ param
At the end of the mantra that grants every accomplishment comes the fire of time beneath the wind-syllable, combined with the sixth vowel and joined with the crescent-moon sign (anusvara) — this is supreme.
Verse 6 (garuda.1.197.6)
parāparavibhinnāśca śivasyordhvādha īritāḥ repheṇāṅgeṣu sarvatra nyāsaṁ kuryādyathāvidhi
Distinguished as higher (para) and lower (apara), declared as above and below Shiva, the placement should be made on all the limbs together with the letter 'ra', according to due procedure.
Verse 7 (garuda.1.197.7)
hṛdi pāṇitale dehe karṇe netre karoti ca japāttu sarvasiddhiḥ syāccaturvaktrasamāyutām
Placing this at the heart, palm, body, ear, and eye, and reciting it, brings every accomplishment, combined with the four-faced form —
Verse 8 (garuda.1.197.8)
caturaśrāṁ suvistāraṁ pītavarṇāntu cintayet pṛthivīṁ cendradevatyāṁ madhye varuṇamaṇḍalam
One should visualize the earth as square, broad, and yellow in colour, presided over by Indra; in its middle lies the mandala of Varuna —
Verse 9 (garuda.1.197.9)
madhye padmaṁ tathāyuktamardhacandraṁ suśītalam indranīladyutiṁ saumyamathavāgneyamaṇḍalam
— in the middle, a lotus joined with a crescent moon, exceedingly cool, of sapphire-blue lustre, gentle; or [next], the fire-mandala —
Verse 10 (garuda.1.197.10)
trikoṇaṁ svasthikairyuktaṁ jvālāmā lānalaṁ smaret bhinnāñjananibhākāraṁ svavṛttaṁ bindubhūṣitam
— triangular, marked with swastikas, one should recall it as garlanded with flame, blazing like fire; then, of a hue like fine collyrium, round, adorned with a dot —
Verse 11 (garuda.1.197.11)
kṣīrormisadṛśākāraṁ śuddhasphaṭikavarcasam plāvayantaṁ jagatsarvaṁ vyomāmṛtamanuṁsmaret
— shaped like a wave of milk, of the lustre of pure crystal, flooding the entire world — one should recall this immortal mantra-syllable of the ether element.
Verse 12 (garuda.1.197.12)
vāsukiḥ śaṅkhapālaśca sthitau pārthivamaṇḍale karkoṭaḥ padmanābhaśca vāruṇe tau vyavasthitau
Vasuki and Shankhapala abide in the earth-mandala; Karkota and Padmanabha are established in the water (Varuna) mandala.
Verse 13 (garuda.1.197.13)
āgneye cāpi kulikastakṣaścaiva mahābjakau vāyumaṇḍalasaṁsthau ca pañca bhūtāni vinyaset
In the fire-mandala, Kulika and Takshaka, both great serpents, are situated; and in the wind-mandala two others are situated — thus the placement of the five elements should be made.
Verse 14 (garuda.1.197.14)
aṅguṣṭhādikaniṣṭhāntamanulomavilomataḥ parvasandhiṣu ca nyasyā jayā ca vijayā tathā
From the thumb to the little finger, in forward and reverse order, at the joints of the fingers, the placement should be made together with Jaya and Vijaya.
Verse 15 (garuda.1.197.15)
āsyādisvapurasthāne nyasyācchivapaḍaṅgakam kaniṣṭhādau hṛdādau ca śikhāyāṁ karayornyaset
Shiva's six limbs should be placed at the mouth and their own respective places; the placement should be made on both hands at the little finger and the rest, at the heart and the rest, and at the crest.
Verse 16 (garuda.1.197.16)
vyāpakantu tatvapūrvaṁ kramādaṅguliparvasu bhūtānāñca punarnyāsaḥ śivāṅgāni tathaiva ca
The pervasive mantra, preceded by its tattva, should be placed in order on the joints of the fingers; the placement of the elements should be repeated, and likewise that of Shiva's limbs.
Verse 17 (garuda.1.197.17)
praṇavādinamaścānte nāmnaiva ca samanvitaḥ sarvamantreṣu kathito vidhiḥ sthāpanapūjane
Beginning with the pranava (Om) and ending with 'namah', combined with the deity's name — this procedure is declared for the installation and worship of every mantra.
Verse 18 (garuda.1.197.18)
ādyākṣaraṁ tannāmnaśca mantro'yaṁ parikīrtitaḥ aṣṭānāṁ nāgajātīnāṁ mantraḥ sānnidhyakārakaḥ
The first syllable of that name is itself declared to be this mantra; it is the mantra that brings the presence of the eight Naga species.
Verse 19 (garuda.1.197.19)
oṁ svāhā kramaśaścaiva pañcabhūtapurogatam eṣa sākṣādbhavettārkṣyaḥ sarvakarmaprasādhakaḥ
'Om svaha' placed in order preceded by the five elements — this becomes Tarkshya (Garuda) himself, directly, the accomplisher of every rite.
Verse 20 (garuda.1.197.20)
karanyāsaṁ svaraiḥ kṛtvā śarīre tu punarnyaset jvalantaṁ cintayetprāṇamātmasaṁśuddhikārakam
Having performed the hand-placement with the vowels, one should place it again on the body; one should meditate on the blazing life-breath as the purifier of the self.
Verse 21 (garuda.1.197.21)
bījantu cintayetpaścādvarṣāntamamṛtātmakam evañcāpyāyanaṁ kṛtvā mūrdhni sañcintya cātmanaḥ
One should then meditate on the immortal seed-syllable; having thus performed this invigoration, and having visualized it at the crown of one's head —
Verse 22 (garuda.1.197.22)
pṛthivīṁ pādayordadyāttaptakāñcanasaprabhām aśeṣabhuvanākīrṇāṁ lokapālasamanvitām
— the earth should be placed at the feet, of the lustre of molten gold, pervading every world, accompanied by the guardians of the quarters.
Verse 23 (garuda.1.197.23)
etāṁ bhagavatīṁ pṛthvīṁ svadehe vinyasedbudhaḥ śyāmavarṇamayaṁ dhyāyetpṛthivīdviguṇaṁ bhavet
The wise one should place this Goddess Earth within his own body; one should meditate on her as dark-hued — she becomes twice the size of the earth element.
Verse 24 (garuda.1.197.24)
jvālāmālākulaṁ dīptamābrahmabhuvanāntakam nābhigrīvāntare nyasya trikoṇaṁ maṇḍalaṁ raveḥ
Garlanded with flames, blazing, extending up to the world of Brahma — having placed the sun's triangular mandala between navel and neck,
Verse 25 (garuda.1.197.25)
bhinnāñjananibhākāraṁ nikhilaṁ vyāpya saṁsthitam ātmamūrtisthitaṁ dhyāyedvāyavyaṁ tīkṣṇamaṇḍalam
— of a hue like fine collyrium, pervading everywhere — one should meditate on it as situated in one's own form; then the sharp wind-mandala —
Verse 26 (garuda.1.197.26)
sikhopari sthitaṁ divyaṁ śuddhasphaṭikavarcasam apramāṇamahāvyomavyāpakaṁ cāmṛtopamam
— situated above the crest, divine, of the lustre of pure crystal, pervading the immeasurable great void, comparable to nectar.
Verse 27 (garuda.1.197.27)
bhūtanyāsaṁ purā kṛtvā nāgānāñca yathākramam lakārāntā binduyutā mantrā bhūtakrameṇa tu
Having first performed the placement of the elements, and then the placement of the Nagas in due order — the mantras ending in 'la' and joined with the bindu, in the order of the elements,
Verse 28 (garuda.1.197.28)
śivabījaṁ tato dadyāttato dhyāyecca maṇḍalam yoyasya kramākhyāto maṇḍalasya vicakṣaṇaḥ tasya taccintayedvarṇaṁ karmakāle vidhānavit
— one should then give Shiva's seed-syllable and meditate on the mandala; the one skilled in the procedure should, at the time of the rite, meditate on the colour of whichever mandala's order has been declared for him.
Verse 29 (garuda.1.197.29)
pādapakṣaistathā cañcatkṛṣṇanāgairvibhūṣitam tārkṣyaṁ dhyāyettato nityaṁ viṣe sthāvarajaṅgame
One should constantly meditate on Tarkshya (Garuda) adorned with restless black serpents at his wings and elsewhere, in every kind of poison, whether from stationary or moving creatures,
Verse 30 (garuda.1.197.30)
grahabhūtapiśāce ca ḍākinīyakṣarākṣase nāgairviveṣṭitaṁ kṛtvā svadehe vinyasecchivam
for protection from malevolent grahas, bhutas, pishachas, dakinis, yakshas, and rakshasas — having encircled him with serpents, one should place Shiva within one's own body.
Verse 31 (garuda.1.197.31)
dvidhā nyāsaḥ samākhyāto nāgānāṁ caiva bhūtayoḥ evaṁ dhyātvā karma kuryādātmatattvādikaṁ kramāt
Thus the twofold placement — of the Nagas and of the elements — is declared. Having meditated thus, one should perform the rite, in due order, beginning with the tattva of the self.
Verse 32 (garuda.1.197.32)
tritattvaṁ prathaṁ dattvā sivatattvaṁ tataḥ param yathā dehe tathā deve aṅgulīnāṁ ca parvasu
Having first given the threefold tattva, then next Shiva's tattva — as in the body, so in the deity, and likewise on the joints of the fingers.
Verse 33 (garuda.1.197.33)
dehe nyāsaṁ purā kṛtvā hyanulomavilomataḥ kandaṁ nālaṁ tathā padmaṁ dharmaṁ jñānādimeva ca
Having first performed the placement on the body in forward and reverse order, then the lotus-bulb, stalk, and lotus itself, representing dharma, jnana, and the rest —
Verse 34 (garuda.1.197.34)
dvitīyasvarasambhinnaṁ vargāntena tu pūjayet śaumiti karṇikāmadhye mūrdhni repheṇa saṁyutam
— combined with the second vowel and the class-ending consonant, one should worship; 'śauṁ' in the middle of the pericarp, and at the crown, joined with 'ra'.
Verse 35 (garuda.1.197.35)
akacaṭatapayaśā vargāḥ pūrvādike nyaset patrāntakesarānte tu dvau dvau pūrvādikau tathā
The consonant classes ka, ca, ṭa, ta, and pa should be placed on the petals, beginning in the east; two each should likewise be placed, beginning in the east, at the petal-tips and at the ends of the filaments.
Verse 36 (garuda.1.197.36)
keśare tu svarānnyasyādīśāntānṣoḍaśārcayet vāmādyāḥ śaktayaḥ proktāstritattvantu tato nyaset
Placing the vowels on the filaments, one should worship the sixteen petals ending with Ishana; the powers (shaktis) beginning with Vama are then declared, and the threefold tattva should be placed there.
Verse 37 (garuda.1.197.37)
āvāhayettato mardhni śivamaṅgaṁ tataḥ param karṇikāyāṁ nyaseddevaṁ sāṁgaṁ tatra puraḥ saram
One should then invoke, at the crown, Shiva together with his limbs; in the pericarp one should install the deity together with his limbs, following that invocation.
Verse 38 (garuda.1.197.38)
pṛtivī paścime patre āpaścottarasaṁsthitāḥ tejastu dakṣiṇe patre vāyuṁ pūrveṇa pūjayet
Earth on the western petal, water situated on the northern petal; fire on the southern petal, and one should worship wind on the eastern petal.
Verse 39 (garuda.1.197.39)
svabījaṁ mūrtirūpantu prāguktaṁ pārakalpayet yaṁ vāyumūlaṁ nairṛtye rephastvanalasaṁsthitaḥ
One's own seed-syllable, previously declared, in its embodied form, should be constructed there; 'yaṁ', the root of wind, is in the south-west; 'ra' is situated in fire (the south-east),
Verse 40 (garuda.1.197.40)
vaṁ ca tvīśe sadā pūjya oṁ hṛdisthañca pūjayet tanmātrānbhūtamātrāṁstānbahireva prapūjayet
and 'vaṁ' should always be worshipped in the north-west; 'Om', situated at the heart, should be worshipped; the subtle essences and elemental essences should be worshipped outwardly.
Verse 41 (garuda.1.197.41)
śivāṅgāni tataḥ paścāddhyātvā saṁpūjayettataḥ āgneyyāṁ hṛdayaṁ pūjya śira īśānagocare
Having then meditated on Shiva's limbs, one should worship them thereafter: in the south-east, the heart should be worshipped; the head, in the direction of Ishana (north-east).
Verse 42 (garuda.1.197.42)
nairṛtye tu śikhāṁ dadyādvāyavyāṁ kavacaṁ nyaset astrantu bāhyato dadyānnetramuttarasaṁsthitam
In the south-west, the top-knot should be placed; in the north-west, the armor should be placed; the weapon should be placed outward, and the eye is situated in the north.
Verse 43 (garuda.1.197.43)
patrāgre karṇikagre tu bījāni paripūjayet anantādikulīrāntā aṣṭau nāgāḥ kramātsthitāḥ
At the tips of the petals and at the tip of the pericarp, the seed-syllables should be duly worshipped; the eight Nagas, from Ananta to Kulira, are situated in order,
Verse 44 (garuda.1.197.44)
pūrvādikakrameṇaiva tvīśaparyantameva ca pūjayecca sadā mantrī vidhānena pṛthakpṛthak
in the order beginning from the east and continuing to Ishana; the mantra-practitioner should always worship them, each separately, according to the prescribed method.
Verse 45 (garuda.1.197.45)
hṛdi padme vidhānena śilādau dattamaṇḍale etatkāryaṁ samuddiṣṭaṁ nityanaimittike'pi ca
In the lotus of the heart, according to the procedure, and likewise in a mandala drawn upon stone and the like — this rite is prescribed for both daily and occasional observances.
Verse 46 (garuda.1.197.46)
ātmānaṁ cintayennityaṁ kāmarūpaṁ manoharam plāvayantaṁ jagatsarvaṁ sṛṣṭisaṁhārakārakam
One should constantly meditate on oneself as of desired form, charming, flooding the entire world, the agent of creation and dissolution,
Verse 47 (garuda.1.197.47)
jvālāmālābhiruddīptaṁ ābrahmabhuvanāntakam daśabāhuṁ caturvaktraṁ piṅgākṣaṁ śūlapāṇinam
blazing with garlands of flame, extending up to the world of Brahma, ten-armed, four-faced, tawny-eyed, trident-bearing,
Verse 48 (garuda.1.197.48)
daṁṣṭrākarālamatyugraṁ trinetraṁ śaśiśekharam bhairavantu smaretsiddhyai garuḍaṁ sarvakarmasu
fearsome with fangs, exceedingly fierce, three-eyed, crowned with the crescent moon — one should recall this Bhairava-form of Garuda for accomplishment in every rite.
Verse 49 (garuda.1.197.49)
nāgānāṁ nāśanārthāya garuḍaṁ bhīmabhīṣaṇam pādau pātālaṁ saṁsthau ca diśaḥ pakṣāstu saṁśritāḥ
For the destruction of hostile Nagas, one should meditate on Garuda, terrible and fearsome — his feet resting in the netherworld, and his wings extending as the directions,
Verse 50 (garuda.1.197.50)
sapta svargā urasi ca brahmāṇḍaṁ kaṇṭhamāśritam pūrvādīśānaparyantaṁ śirastasya vicintayet
the seven heavens resting at his chest, the cosmic egg situated at his neck; one should meditate on his head as extending from the east to Ishana,
Verse 51 (garuda.1.197.51)
sadāśivaśikhāntasthaṁ śaktitritayameva ca parātparaṁ śivaṁ sākṣāttārkṣyaṁ bhuvananāyakam
abiding at the crest with Sadashiva, together with the triad of powers — directly the Supreme beyond the supreme, Shiva himself, Tarkshya, Lord of all the worlds,
Verse 52 (garuda.1.197.52)
trinetramugrarūpañca viṣanāgakṣayaṅkaram grasanaṁ bhīmavaktraṁ ca garuḍaṁ mantravigraham
three-eyed, of fierce form, the destroyer of venomous serpents, devouring, with a terrible face — this mantra-embodied Garuda —
Verse 53 (garuda.1.197.53)
kālāgnimiva dīptaṁ ca cintayetsarvakarmasu evaṁ nyāsavidhiṁ kṛtvā yadyanmanasi cintayet
— should be visualized as blazing like the fire at the end of time, in every rite. Having thus performed this procedure of ritual placement, whatever one contemplates in the mind,
Verse 54 (garuda.1.197.54)
tattadeva bhavetsādhyaṁ naro vai garuḍāyate pretā bhūtāstathā yakṣā nāgā gandharvarākṣasāḥ darśanāttasya naśyanti jvarāścāturthikādayaḥ
that very thing becomes attainable, and the practitioner becomes as Garuda himself. Pretas, bhutas, yakshas, nagas, gandharvas, and rakshasas, and fevers such as chaturthika and the rest, are destroyed merely at the sight of him.
Verse 55 (garuda.1.197.55)
dhanvantariruvāca evaṁ sa garuḍaṁ proce garuḍaḥ kaśyapāya ca maheśvaro yathā gaurīṁ prāha vidyāṁ tathā śṛṇu
Dhanvantari said: Thus was this declared to Garuda, and Garuda declared it to Kashyapa; just as Maheshvara spoke this knowledge to Gauri, so now listen to it.
