The Chudamani: An Omen-Chart of Eight Signs
Verse 1 (garuda.1.199.1)
श्रीगरुडमहापुराणम् १९९ भैरव उवाच । अथ चूडामणिं वक्ष्ये शुभाशुभविशुद्धये । सूर्यं देवीं गणं सोम स्मृत्वा तु विलिखेन्नरः
śrīgaruḍamahāpurāṇam 199 bhairava uvāca atha cūḍāmaṇiṁ vakṣye śubhāśubhaviśuddhaye sūryaṁ devīṁ gaṇaṁ soma smṛtvā tu vilikhennaraḥ
Bhairava said: Now I shall declare the Chudamani (crest-jewel divination), for the discernment of good and bad omens; having remembered the Sun, the Goddess, Ganesha, and the Moon, one should draw the chart.
Verse 2 (garuda.1.199.2)
त्रिरेखा गोमूर्त्रिकाभा अथवा प्रश्रवाक्यतः । दिशस्थानप्रसूतो वा ध्वजादीन्गणयेत्क्रमात्
trirekhā gomūrtrikābhā athavā praśravākyataḥ diśasthānaprasūto vā dhvajādīngaṇayetkramāt
With three lines resembling a stream of cow's urine, or from the words of the question, or arising from the position of the directions — one should count the flag and the rest in order.
Verse 3 (garuda.1.199.3)
ध्वजो धूमोऽथ सिंहश्च श्वा वृषः खरदन्तिनौ । ध्वाङ्क्षश्च अष्टमो ज्ञेयो नाम मन्त्रैश्च तान्न्यसेत्
dhvajo dhūmo'tha siṁhaśca śvā vṛṣaḥ kharadantinau dhvāṅkṣaśca aṣṭamo jñeyo nāma mantraiśca tānnyaset
Flag, smoke, then lion, dog, bull, donkey and elephant, and the crow as the eighth — these should be known by name and placed with their mantras.
Verse 4 (garuda.1.199.4)
ध्वजस्थाने ध्वजं दृष्ट्वा राज्यचिन्ताधनादिकम् । ध्वजस्थाने स्थितो धूम्रो धातुचिन्ता च लाभकृत्
dhvajasthāne dhvajaṁ dṛṣṭvā rājyacintādhanādikam dhvajasthāne sthito dhūmro dhātucintā ca lābhakṛt
Seeing the flag in the flag's own position indicates concern about kingdom, wealth, and the like. With smoke situated in the flag's position, there is concern about minerals and gain.
Verse 5 (garuda.1.199.5)
ध्वजस्थाने स्थिते सिंहे धनलाभादिकं भवेत् । स्थिते शुनिध्वजस्थाने दासीचिन्तासुखादिकम्
dhvajasthāne sthite siṁhe dhanalābhādikaṁ bhavet sthite śunidhvajasthāne dāsīcintāsukhādikam
With the lion situated in the flag's position, gain of wealth and the like occurs. With the dog situated in the flag's position, there is concern about a servant-girl, and comfort and the like.
Verse 6 (garuda.1.199.6)
ध्वजस्थाने वृषं दृष्ट्वा स्थानचिन्ता च लाभकम् । ध्वजस्थाने खरं दृष्ट्वा दुः खक्लेशादिकं भवेत्
dhvajasthāne vṛṣaṁ dṛṣṭvā sthānacintā ca lābhakam dhvajasthāne kharaṁ dṛṣṭvā duḥ khakleśādikaṁ bhavet
Seeing the bull in the flag's position indicates concern about property, and gain. Seeing the donkey in the flag's position indicates sorrow, distress, and the like.
Verse 7 (garuda.1.199.7)
ध्वजस्थाने गजं दृष्ट्वा स्थानचिन्ताजयादिकम् । ध्वजस्थाने तथा ध्वाङ्क्षे क्लेशचिन्ता धनक्षयः
dhvajasthāne gajaṁ dṛṣṭvā sthānacintājayādikam dhvajasthāne tathā dhvāṅkṣe kleśacintā dhanakṣayaḥ
Seeing the elephant in the flag's position indicates concern about property, and victory and the like. With the crow in the flag's position, there is distressing worry and loss of wealth.
Verse 8 (garuda.1.199.8)
धूम्रस्थाने ध्वजं दृष्ट्वा पूर्वं दुः खं ततो धनम् । धूम्रे धूम्रं तथा दृष्ट्वा कलिदुः खादिकं भवेत्
dhūmrasthāne dhvajaṁ dṛṣṭvā pūrvaṁ duḥ khaṁ tato dhanam dhūmre dhūmraṁ tathā dṛṣṭvā kaliduḥ khādikaṁ bhavet
Seeing the flag in smoke's position indicates sorrow first, then wealth. Seeing smoke in smoke's own position indicates strife, sorrow, and the like.
Verse 9 (garuda.1.199.9)
धूम्रस्थाने स्थिते सिंहे मनश्चिन्ताधनादिकम् । धूम्रस्थाने शुनि स्थिते जयलाभादिकं भवेत्
dhūmrasthāne sthite siṁhe manaścintādhanādikam dhūmrasthāne śuni sthite jayalābhādikaṁ bhavet
With the lion situated in smoke's position, there is mental worry, and wealth and the like. With the dog situated in smoke's position, victory, gain, and the like occur.
Verse 10 (garuda.1.199.10)
धूम्रस्थाने वृषं दृष्ट्वा नारीगोऽश्वधनादिकम् । धूम्रस्थाने खरं दृष्ट्वा व्याधिश्चापि धनक्षयः
dhūmrasthāne vṛṣaṁ dṛṣṭvā nārīgo'śvadhanādikam dhūmrasthāne kharaṁ dṛṣṭvā vyādhiścāpi dhanakṣayaḥ
Seeing the bull in smoke's position indicates women, cattle, horses, wealth, and the like. Seeing the donkey in smoke's position indicates disease as well as loss of wealth.
Verse 11 (garuda.1.199.11)
धूम्रस्थाने गजे दृष्टे राज्यलाभजयादिकम् । धूम्रस्थाने स्थिते ध्वाङ्क्षे धनराज्यविनाशनम्
dhūmrasthāne gaje dṛṣṭe rājyalābhajayādikam dhūmrasthāne sthite dhvāṅkṣe dhanarājyavināśanam
Seeing the elephant in smoke's position indicates gain of kingdom, and victory and the like. With the crow situated in smoke's position, there is destruction of wealth and kingdom.
Verse 12 (garuda.1.199.12)
सिंहस्थाने ध्वजं दृष्ट्वा राज्यलाभादि निर्दिशेत् । सिंहस्थाने स्थिते धूम्रे कन्याप्राप्तिर्धनादिकम्
siṁhasthāne dhvajaṁ dṛṣṭvā rājyalābhādi nirdiśet siṁhasthāne sthite dhūmre kanyāprāptirdhanādikam
Seeing the flag in the lion's position, one should predict gain of kingdom and the like. With smoke situated in the lion's position, there is the attainment of a daughter, wealth, and the like.
Verse 13 (garuda.1.199.13)
सिंहस्थाने स्थिते सिंहे जयो मित्रसमागमः । कौलेयके सिंहगते स्त्रीचिन्ता ग्रामलाभकम्
siṁhasthāne sthite siṁhe jayo mitrasamāgamaḥ kauleyake siṁhagate strīcintā grāmalābhakam
With the lion situated in the lion's own position, there is victory and meeting with friends. With the dog situated in the lion's position, there is concern about a woman, and gain of a village.
Verse 14 (garuda.1.199.14)
सिंह स्थाने वृषं दृष्ट्वा गृहक्षेत्रार्थलाभकम् । सिंहस्थाने गजं दृष्ट्वा ग्रामस्वामित्वमेव च
siṁha sthāne vṛṣaṁ dṛṣṭvā gṛhakṣetrārthalābhakam siṁhasthāne gajaṁ dṛṣṭvā grāmasvāmitvameva ca
Seeing the bull in the lion's position indicates gain of house, land, and wealth. Seeing the elephant in the lion's position indicates lordship over a village.
Verse 15 (garuda.1.199.15)
सिंहस्थाने गजं दृष्ट्वा आरोग्यायुः सुखादिकम् । सिंहस्थानेस्थिते ध्वाङ्क्षे कन्याधान्यगुणादिकम्
siṁhasthāne gajaṁ dṛṣṭvā ārogyāyuḥ sukhādikam siṁhasthānesthite dhvāṅkṣe kanyādhānyaguṇādikam
Seeing the elephant in the lion's position indicates health, longevity, comfort, and the like. With the crow situated in the lion's position, there is a daughter, grain, and good qualities and the like.
Verse 16 (garuda.1.199.16)
शुनः स्थाने ध्वजं दृष्ट्वा स्थानचिन्तासुखादिकम् । शुनः स्थाने स्थिते धूम्रे कलहं कार्यनाशनम्
śunaḥ sthāne dhvajaṁ dṛṣṭvā sthānacintāsukhādikam śunaḥ sthāne sthite dhūmre kalahaṁ kāryanāśanam
Seeing the flag in the dog's position indicates concern about property, and comfort and the like. With smoke situated in the dog's position, there is quarrel and destruction of undertakings.
Verse 17 (garuda.1.199.17)
शुनः स्थान स्थिते सिंहे कार्यासिद्धिर्भविष्यति । स्थिते शुनि शुनः स्थाने धननाशो भविष्यति
śunaḥ sthāna sthite siṁhe kāryāsiddhirbhaviṣyati sthite śuni śunaḥ sthāne dhananāśo bhaviṣyati
With the lion situated in the dog's position, undertakings will fail. With the dog situated in the dog's own position, there will be loss of wealth.
Verse 18 (garuda.1.199.18)
शुनः स्थाने वृषं दृष्ट्वा रोगी रोगाद्वि मुच्यते । शुनः स्थाने खरं दृष्ट्वा कलहस्य भयं भवेत्
śunaḥ sthāne vṛṣaṁ dṛṣṭvā rogī rogādvi mucyate śunaḥ sthāne kharaṁ dṛṣṭvā kalahasya bhayaṁ bhavet
Seeing the bull in the dog's position, a sick person is freed from illness. Seeing the donkey in the dog's position, there will be fear of quarrel.
Verse 19 (garuda.1.199.19)
शुनः स्थाने गजं दृष्ट्वा पुत्रभार्यासमागमः । श्वस्थाने च स्थिते ध्वाङ्क्षे पीडास्यात्कुलनाशनम्
śunaḥ sthāne gajaṁ dṛṣṭvā putrabhāryāsamāgamaḥ śvasthāne ca sthite dhvāṅkṣe pīḍāsyātkulanāśanam
Seeing the elephant in the dog's position, there is reunion with son and wife. With the crow situated in the dog's position, there is affliction, and destruction of the family.
Verse 20 (garuda.1.199.20)
वृषस्थाने ध्वजं दृष्ट्वा राजपूजासुखादिकम् । वृषस्थाने स्थिते धूम्रे राजपूजासुखादिकम्
vṛṣasthāne dhvajaṁ dṛṣṭvā rājapūjāsukhādikam vṛṣasthāne sthite dhūmre rājapūjāsukhādikam
Seeing the flag in the bull's position indicates royal honour, comfort, and the like. With smoke situated in the bull's position, there is likewise royal honour, comfort, and the like.
Verse 21 (garuda.1.199.21)
वृषस्थाने स्थिते सिंहे सौभाग्यञ्च धनादिकम् । स्थिते शुनि वृषस्थाने बलश्रीकाम ईरितः
vṛṣasthāne sthite siṁhe saubhāgyañca dhanādikam sthite śuni vṛṣasthāne balaśrīkāma īritaḥ
With the lion situated in the bull's position, there is good fortune and wealth and the like. With the dog situated in the bull's position, strength, prosperity, and fulfilment of desire is declared.
Verse 22 (garuda.1.199.22)
वृषस्थाने वृषं दृष्ट्वा कीर्तितुष्टिसुखादिकम् । वृषस्थाने खरं दृष्ट्वा महालाभादिकं भवेत्
vṛṣasthāne vṛṣaṁ dṛṣṭvā kīrtituṣṭisukhādikam vṛṣasthāne kharaṁ dṛṣṭvā mahālābhādikaṁ bhavet
Seeing the bull in the bull's own position, there is fame, satisfaction, and comfort and the like. Seeing the donkey in the bull's position, great gain and the like will occur.
Verse 23 (garuda.1.199.23)
वृषस्थाने गजं दृष्ट्वा स्त्रीगजादिसमागमः । वृषस्थाने स्थिते ध्वाङ्क्षे स्थानमानसमागमः
vṛṣasthāne gajaṁ dṛṣṭvā strīgajādisamāgamaḥ vṛṣasthāne sthite dhvāṅkṣe sthānamānasamāgamaḥ
Seeing the elephant in the bull's position, there is reunion with women, elephants, and the like. With the crow situated in the bull's position, there is attainment of position and honour.
Verse 24 (garuda.1.199.24)
खरस्थाने ध्वजं दृष्ट्वा रोगशोकादिकं भवेत् । खरस्थाने स्थिते धूम्रे तस्करादिभयं भवेत्
kharasthāne dhvajaṁ dṛṣṭvā rogaśokādikaṁ bhavet kharasthāne sthite dhūmre taskarādibhayaṁ bhavet
Seeing the flag in the donkey's position, disease, grief, and the like will occur. With smoke situated in the donkey's position, there will be fear of thieves and the like.
Verse 25 (garuda.1.199.25)
खरस्थाने स्थिते सिंहे पूजाश्रीविजयादिकम् । स्थिते शुनिखरस्थाने सन्तापधननाशनम्
kharasthāne sthite siṁhe pūjāśrīvijayādikam sthite śunikharasthāne santāpadhananāśanam
With the lion situated in the donkey's position, there is honour, prosperity, victory, and the like. With the dog situated in the donkey's position, there is distress and loss of wealth.
Verse 26 (garuda.1.199.26)
खरस्थाने वृषं दृष्ट्वा सुखं प्रियसमागमः । खरस्थाने खरं दृष्ट्वा दुः खीपीडादि निर्दिशेत्
kharasthāne vṛṣaṁ dṛṣṭvā sukhaṁ priyasamāgamaḥ kharasthāne kharaṁ dṛṣṭvā duḥ khīpīḍādi nirdiśet
Seeing the bull in the donkey's position, there is comfort and reunion with a beloved. Seeing the donkey in the donkey's own position, one should predict sorrow, affliction, and the like.
Verse 27 (garuda.1.199.27)
खरस्थाने गजं दृष्ट्वा सुखपुत्त्रादिकं भवेत् । खरस्थाने स्थिते ध्वाङ्क्षे कलहो व्याधिरेव च
kharasthāne gajaṁ dṛṣṭvā sukhaputtrādikaṁ bhavet kharasthāne sthite dhvāṅkṣe kalaho vyādhireva ca
Seeing the elephant in the donkey's position, comfort, sons, and the like will occur. With the crow situated in the donkey's position, there is quarrel and disease as well.
Verse 28 (garuda.1.199.28)
गजस्थाने ध्वजं दृष्ट्वा स्त्रीजयश्रीसुखादिकम् । गजस्थानेस्थिते धूम्रे धनधान्यसमागमः
gajasthāne dhvajaṁ dṛṣṭvā strījayaśrīsukhādikam gajasthānesthite dhūmre dhanadhānyasamāgamaḥ
Seeing the flag in the elephant's position, there is victory through women, prosperity, comfort, and the like. With smoke situated in the elephant's position, there is acquisition of wealth and grain.
Verse 29 (garuda.1.199.29)
गजस्थाने स्थिते सिंहे जयसिद्धिसमागमः । स्थिते शुनि गजस्थाने आरोग्यं सुखसम्पदः
gajasthāne sthite siṁhe jayasiddhisamāgamaḥ sthite śuni gajasthāne ārogyaṁ sukhasampadaḥ
With the lion situated in the elephant's position, there is attainment of victory and success. With the dog situated in the elephant's position, there is health, comfort, and prosperity.
Verse 30 (garuda.1.199.30)
गजस्थाने वृषं दृष्ट्वा राजमानधनादिकम् । गजस्थाने खरं दृष्ट्वा पूर्वं दुः खं ततः सुखम्
gajasthāne vṛṣaṁ dṛṣṭvā rājamānadhanādikam gajasthāne kharaṁ dṛṣṭvā pūrvaṁ duḥ khaṁ tataḥ sukham
Seeing the bull in the elephant's position, there is royal honour, wealth, and the like. Seeing the donkey in the elephant's position, there is sorrow first, then comfort.
Verse 31 (garuda.1.199.31)
गजस्थाने गजं दृष्ट्वा क्षेत्रधान्यसुखादिकम् । गजस्थानेस्थिते ध्वाङ्क्षे धनधान्यसमागमः
gajasthāne gajaṁ dṛṣṭvā kṣetradhānyasukhādikam gajasthānesthite dhvāṅkṣe dhanadhānyasamāgamaḥ
Seeing the elephant in the elephant's own position, there is land, grain, comfort, and the like. With the crow situated in the elephant's position, there is acquisition of wealth and grain.
Verse 32 (garuda.1.199.32)
ध्वाङ्क्षस्थाने ध्वजं दृष्ट्वा कार्यनाशो भविष्यति । ध्वाङ्क्षस्थाने स्थिते धूम्रे कलिदुः खं गमिष्यति
dhvāṅkṣasthāne dhvajaṁ dṛṣṭvā kāryanāśo bhaviṣyati dhvāṅkṣasthāne sthite dhūmre kaliduḥ khaṁ gamiṣyati
Seeing the flag in the crow's position, destruction of undertakings will result. With smoke situated in the crow's position, strife and sorrow will come.
Verse 33 (garuda.1.199.33)
ध्वाङ्क्षस्थाने स्थिते सिंहे विग्रहो दुः खमेव च । ध्वाङ्क्षस्थाने स्थिते श्वाने गृहभङ्गभयादिकम्
dhvāṅkṣasthāne sthite siṁhe vigraho duḥ khameva ca dhvāṅkṣasthāne sthite śvāne gṛhabhaṅgabhayādikam
With the lion situated in the crow's position, there is conflict and sorrow as well. With the dog situated in the crow's position, there is fear of the destruction of one's house and the like.
Verse 34 (garuda.1.199.34)
ध्वाङ्क्षस्थाने वृषं दृष्ट्वा स्थानभ्रंशभयादिकम् । ध्वाङ्क्षस्थाने खरं दृष्ट्वा धननाशपराजयौ
dhvāṅkṣasthāne vṛṣaṁ dṛṣṭvā sthānabhraṁśabhayādikam dhvāṅkṣasthāne kharaṁ dṛṣṭvā dhananāśaparājayau
Seeing the bull in the crow's position, there is fear of loss of position and the like. Seeing the donkey in the crow's position, there is loss of wealth and defeat.
Verse 35 (garuda.1.199.35)
ध्वाङ्क्षस्थाने गजं दृष्ट्वा धनकीर्त्यादिकं भवेत् । ध्वाङ्क्षस्थाने स्थिते ध्वाङ्क्षे विदेशगमनादिकम्
dhvāṅkṣasthāne gajaṁ dṛṣṭvā dhanakīrtyādikaṁ bhavet dhvāṅkṣasthāne sthite dhvāṅkṣe videśagamanādikam
Seeing the elephant in the crow's position, there is wealth, fame, and the like. With the crow situated in the crow's own position, there is travel abroad and the like.
