Chapter 19All chaptersChapter 21

Verse 1 (garuda.1.20.1)

sūta uvāca vakṣye tatparamaṁ guhyaṁ śivoktaṁ mantravṛndakam pāśaṁ dhanuśca cakraṁ ca mudgaraṁ śūlapaṭṭiśam

Suta said: I shall declare that supreme, secret group of mantras, as spoken by Shiva. The noose, the bow, the discus, the club, the trident, and the spear-axe —

Verse 2 (garuda.1.20.2)

etairevāyudhairyuddhe mantraiḥ śatrūñjayennṛpaḥ mantroddhāraḥ padmapātre ādi pūrvādike likhet

With mantras invoking these very weapons, a king may conquer his enemies in battle. Upon the petals of the lotus, in the east and the other quarters, one should extract and write the seed-syllable.

Verse 3 (garuda.1.20.3)

aṣṭavargaṁ cāṣṭamaṁ ca khyātamīśānapatrake oṁ kāro brahma bījaṁ syāddhrīṅkāro viṣṇureva ca

The eight groups, and the eighth, should be inscribed, renowned, upon the north-eastern petal. The syllable "Om" is Brahma's seed-mantra, and "Hrim" is Vishnu's own.

Verse 4 (garuda.1.20.4)

hrīṁkā raśca śivaḥ śūle triśākhe tu kramānnyaset oṁ hrīṁ hrīṁ

"Hrim" is Shiva's seed-mantra; upon the three-pronged trident one should place them in order. "Om Hrim Hrim."

Verse 5 (garuda.1.20.5)

śūlaṁ gṛhītvā hastenā bhrāmya cākāśasammukham taddarśanāndrahā nāgā dṛṣṭvā vā nāśamāpnuyuḥ

Taking the trident in hand, one should whirl it facing the sky. At the very sight of it, savage serpents, upon seeing it, meet their destruction.

Verse 6 (garuda.1.20.6)

dhūmārakte karaṁ madhye dhyātvā khe cintayennaraḥ duṣṭā nāgā grahā meghā vinaśyanti ca rākṣasāḥ

Meditating upon the middle of the hand, smoky-red in hue, a man should contemplate it in the sky. By this, wicked serpents, malefic planets, storm-clouds, and rakshasas are destroyed.

Verse 7 (garuda.1.20.7)

trilokānrakṣayenmantro martyalokasya kā kathā oṁ jūṁ sūṁ hūṁ phaṭ

This mantra can protect even the three worlds — what then of the mortal world! "Om jum sum hum phat."

Verse 8 (garuda.1.20.8)

khādirānkīlakānaṣṭau kṣetre saṁmantrya vinyaset na tatra vajrapātasya sphūrjathvāderupadravaḥ

Having consecrated eight stakes of khadira wood with the mantra, one should plant them in the field. There, no harm from thunderbolts, lightning, or the like occurs.

Verse 9 (garuda.1.20.9)

garuḍoktairmahāmantraiḥ kīlakānaṣṭa mantrayet ekaviṁśativārāṇi kṣetre tu nikhanenniśi

One should consecrate the eight stakes twenty-one times with the great mantras spoken by Garuda, and plant them in the field at night.

Verse 10 (garuda.1.20.10)

vidyunmūṣakavajrādisamupadrava eva ca harakṣamalavarayaḍa biṁduyuktaḥ sadāśivaḥ

Nor does harm from lightning, rats, thunderbolts, and the like occur. The syllables "ha ra kṣa ma la va ra ya ḍa," joined with the bindu, form the mantra of Sadashiva.

Verse 11 (garuda.1.20.11)

oṁ hrāṁ sadāśivāya namaḥ tarjanyā vinyasetpiṇḍaṁ (ṇḍe) dāḍimīkusumaprabham

"Om hraṁ, salutation to Sadashiva." With the index finger, one should place a mass of light bright as the pomegranate flower.

Verse 12 (garuda.1.20.12)

tasyaiva darśanādduṣṭā meghavidyuddipādayaḥ rākṣasā bhūtaḍākinyaḥ pradravaṁti diśo daśa

At the very sight of it, wicked storm-clouds, lightning, elephants, and the like, and rakshasas, bhutas, and dakinis, flee in the ten directions.

Verse 13 (garuda.1.20.13)

oṁ hrīṁ gaṇeśāya namaḥ (oṁ hrīṁ) stambhanādicakrāya namaḥ oṁ aiṁ brahayaiṁtrai lokyaḍāmarāya namaḥ

"Om hrim, salutation to Ganesha." "Om hrim, salutation to the discus of paralysis and the rest." "Om aim, salutation to the Brahma-instrument that resounds through the three worlds."

Verse 14 (garuda.1.20.14)

bhairavaṁ piṁḍamākhyātaṁ viṣapāpagrahāpaham kṣetrasya rakṣaṇaṁ bhūtarākṣasādeḥ pramardanam

This is declared to be the Bhairava-orb mantra, which removes poison, sin, and malefic planets. It is a protector of the field and a crusher of bhutas, rakshasas, and the rest.

Verse 15 (garuda.1.20.15)

oṁ namaḥ iṁdravajraṁ kare dhyātvā duṣṭameghādivāraṇam viṣaśatrugaṇābhūtā naśyante vajramudrayā

"Om, salutation." Meditating upon Indra's thunderbolt in the hand wards off wicked storm-clouds and the like. Poison, hosts of enemies, and bhutas are destroyed by the thunderbolt-mudra.

Verse 16 (garuda.1.20.16)

oṁ kṣuṁ(kṣa) namaḥ smaretpāśaṁ vāmahaste viṣabhūtādi naśyati oṁ hrāṁ (hro) namaḥ hareduccāraṇānmaṁtro viṣameghagrahādikān

"Om kṣuṁ, salutation." Calling to mind the noose in the left hand destroys poison, bhutas, and the like. "Om hrāṁ, salutation." By reciting this mantra, poison, storm-clouds, malefic planets, and the like are removed.

Verse 17 (garuda.1.20.17)

dhyātvā kṛtāṁtaṁ ca dahecchedakāstreṇa vai jagat oṁ kṣṇã (kṣma) namaḥ dhyātvā tu bhairavaṁ kuryyāndgrahabhūtaviṣāpaham

Meditating upon Kritanta, Yama, one may cleanse the whole world of foes with the cutting weapon. "Om kṣṇaṁ, salutation." Meditating upon Bhairava, one becomes the destroyer of malefic planets, bhutas, and poison.

Verse 18 (garuda.1.20.18)

oṁ lasaddijihvākṣa svāhā kṣetrādau grahabhūtādiviṣapakṣinivāraṇam

"Om, O one of shining twin tongues, svaha." This wards off, in the fields and elsewhere, malefic planets, bhutas, poison, and harmful birds.

Verse 19 (garuda.1.20.19)

oṁ kṣva (kṣṇaṁ) namaḥ raktena paṭahe likhya śabdāsteṣusurgrahādayaḥ oṁ mara mara mārayamāraya svāhā oṁ huṁ phaṭ svāhā

"Om kṣvaṁ, salutation." Having written it in red upon a drum, by its sound the malefic planets and the like flee. "Om, die, die, slay, slay, svaha." "Om hum phat svaha."

Verse 20 (garuda.1.20.20)

śūlaṁ cāṣṭaśatairmantrya bhrāmaṇācchatruvṛṁdahṛt ūrddhaśaktinipātena adhaḥ śaktiṁ nikuñceyet

The trident, consecrated eight hundred times and whirled, destroys hosts of enemies. Upon the descent of the power from above, one should contract the power below.

Verse 21 (garuda.1.20.21)

pūrake pūritā maṁtrāḥ kumbhakena sumantritāḥ praṇavenāpyāyitāste manavastadudīritāḥ evamāpyāyitā maṁtrā bhṛtyavatphaladāyakāḥ

Mantras filled by inhalation, well consecrated by breath-retention, and strengthened by the syllable Om — thus have they been declared. Mantras so strengthened yield their fruit like a devoted servant.
