Purvakhanda — Acharakanda · Chapter 19
The Remedy for Snake Poison (Pranesvara Lore)
Verse 1 (garuda.1.19.1)
sūta uvāca prāṇeśvaraṁ gāruḍaṁ ca śivoktaṁ pravadāmyaham sthānānyādau pravakṣyāmi nāgadaṣṭo na jīvati
Suta said: I shall declare the Garuda-lore called Pranesvara, as spoken by Shiva. First I shall tell the places where, if a person is bitten by a serpent, he does not survive.
Verse 2 (garuda.1.19.2)
One bitten at a cremation ground, an anthill, a mountain and the like, or in the hollow or burrow of a tree; and one whose bite-mark conceals three lines, does not survive.
Verse 3 (garuda.1.19.3)
ṣaṣṭhyāṁ ca karkaṭe meṣe mūlāśleṣāmaghādiṣu kakṣāśroṇigale sandhau śaṁkhakarṇodarādiṣu
On the sixth lunar day, under the sign of Cancer or Aries, under the lunar mansions Mula, Ashlesha, Magha and the like, and bitten at the armpit, the hip, the joint of the neck, the temple, the ear, the belly, and the like —
Verse 4 (garuda.1.19.4)
daṇḍī śastradharo bhikṣurnagnādiḥ kāladūtakaḥ bāhau ca vakkre grīvāyāṁ daṣṭāyāṁ na hi jīvati
if at that time one bearing a staff, a weapon-bearer, a mendicant, a naked person, or the like appears — as a messenger of death — and the bite is on the arm, the face, or the neck, then that person does not survive.
Verse 5 (garuda.1.19.5)
pūrvaṁ dinapatirbhuṅkte arddhayāmaṁ tato'pare śeṣā grahāḥ pratidinaṁ ṣaṭsaṁkhyā parivarttanaiḥ
For the first half-watch, the lord of the day, that planet, presides; then, thereafter, another. The remaining planets likewise take their turn each day, in a cycle of six.
Verse 6 (garuda.1.19.6)
nāgabhogaḥ kramāñjñeyo rātrau bāṇavivarttanaiḥ śeṣo'rkaḥ phaṇipaścandrastakṣako bhauma īritaḥ
The presiding period of the serpents should likewise be known, at night, through the rotation of the five "arrows." Shesha corresponds to the Sun, the serpent-lord Vasuki to the Moon, Takshaka is declared to correspond to Mars,
Verse 7 (garuda.1.19.7)
karkoṭo jño guruḥ padmo mahāpadmaśca bhārgavaḥ śaṅkhaḥ śanaiścaro rāhuḥ kulikaścāhayo grahāḥ
Karkotaka to Mercury, Padma to Jupiter, Mahapadma to Venus, Shankha to Saturn, and Kulika to Rahu — thus the serpents are linked with the planets.
Verse 8 (garuda.1.19.8)
rātrau divā suragurorbhāge syādamarāntakaḥ paṁgoḥ kāle divā rāhuḥ kulikena saha sthitaḥ
At night and by day, in Jupiter's portion, is the ender of the gods, the death-serpent. In the time of the lame one, Saturn, by day, Rahu abides together with Kulika.
Verse 9 (garuda.1.19.9)
yāmārddhasandhisaṁsthāṁ ca velāṁ kālavatīṁ caret bāṇadviṣaḍvahnivājiyugabhūrekabhāgataḥ ?
One should reckon that fateful hour, standing at the midpoint-juncture of the watch, by the portions numbered five, twelve, three, two, and one.
Verse 10 (garuda.1.19.10)
divā ṣaḍvedanetrādripañcatrimānuṣāṁśakaiḥ pādāṁguṣṭhe pādapṛṣṭhe pādapṛṣṭhe gulphe jānuni liṁgake
By day, by the portions six, the Vedas (four), the eyes (two), the mountains (seven), five, three, and man (fourteen), one should reckon. In the big toe, on the back of the foot, at the ankle, the knee, the place of generation —
Verse 11 (garuda.1.19.11)
nābhau hṛdi stanataṭe kaṇṭhe nāsāpuṭe'kṣiṇi karṇayośca bhruvoḥ śaṁkhe mastake pratipatkramāt
at the navel, the heart, near the breast, the throat, the nostril, the eye, both ears, the eyebrows, the temple, and the crown of the head — in this order, from the first day of the fortnight, the serpent's dwelling proceeds.
Verse 12 (garuda.1.19.12)
tiṣṭhaccandraśca jīvecca puṁso dakṣiṇabhāgake kāyasya vāmabhāge tu striyā vāyuvahātkarāt
Where the moon stands in the right side of a man's body, life is preserved; and in the left side of a woman's body — through the hand from which the vital breath flows.
Verse 13 (garuda.1.19.13)
amṛtastatkṛto moho nivartteta ca mardanāt ātmanaḥ paramaṁ bījaṁ haṁsākhyaṁ sphaṭikāmalam
Being of the nature of nectar, the confusion it causes is dispelled by massage. The supreme seed-mantra of the Self is called "hansa," clear as crystal.
Verse 14 (garuda.1.19.14)
jñātavyaṁ viṣapāpaghnaṁ bījaṁ tasya caturvidham vindupaṁcasvarayutamādyamuktaṁ dvitīyakam ṣaṣṭhārūḍhaṁ tṛtīyaṁ syātsavisargaṁ caturthakam oṁ kuru kunde svāhā
It should be known as the destroyer of poison and sin; its seed-form is fourfold — the first joined with the bindu and the fifth vowel, the second as already stated, the third mounted on the sixth vowel, and the fourth with visarga. "Om, act, O Kunde, svaha."
Verse 15 (garuda.1.19.15)
vidyā trailokyarakṣārthaṁ garuḍena dhṛtā purā vadhepsurnāganāgānāṁ mukhe'tha praṇavaṁ nyaset
This lore was held by Garuda of old for the protection of the three worlds. One desiring to slay serpents should first place the syllable Om at the mouth.
Verse 16 (garuda.1.19.16)
gale kuru nyaseddhīmānkule ca gulphayoḥ smṛtaḥ svāhā pādayuge caiva yugahā nyāsa īritaḥ
The wise one should place "kuru" at the throat, and "kule" is remembered at the ankles. At both feet, "svaha" is declared to be placed — this is called the age-destroying placement.
Verse 17 (garuda.1.19.17)
gṛhe vilikhitā yatra tannāgāḥ saṁtyajanti ca sahastramantraṁ japtvā tu karṇe sūtraṁ dhṛtaṁ tathā
Wherever this mantra is written in a house, serpents flee from it. Having recited the mantra a thousand times, one should likewise bind a thread, thus consecrated, at the ear.
Verse 18 (garuda.1.19.18)
yadgṛhe śarkarā japtā kṣiptā nāgāstyajanti tat saptalakṣasya japyāddhi siddhiḥ prāptā surāsuraiḥ
In whatever house sugar consecrated with the mantra is scattered, serpents flee from it too. By reciting it seven hundred thousand times, success has been attained even by gods and demons.
Verse 19 (garuda.1.19.19)
oṁ suvarṇarekhe kukkuṭavigraharūpiṇi svāhā evañcāṣṭadale padma dale varṇayugaṁ likhet
"Om, O golden-streaked one, in the form of a cock, svaha." In the same way, on each petal of the eight-petaled lotus, two syllables should be written.
Verse 20 (garuda.1.19.20)
nāmaitadvāridhārābhiḥ snnāto daṣṭo viṣaṁ tyajet oṁ pakṣi svāhā
A bitten person who bathes in a stream of water consecrated with this name mantra is freed of the poison. "Om, O bird, svaha."
Verse 21 (garuda.1.19.21)
aṁguṣṭhādi kaniṣṭhāntaṁ kare nyasyātha dehake ke (kai) vakkre hṛdi liṁge ca pādayorgaruḍasya hi
Having performed the placement upon the hand, from the thumb to the little finger, one should then place it upon the body as well — at the face, the heart, the place of generation, and at both feet of Garuda.
Verse 22 (garuda.1.19.22)
nākrāmanti ca tacchāyāṁ svapne'pi viṣapannagāḥ yastu lakṣaṁ japeccāsyāḥ sa dṛṣṭvā(ṣṭyā) nāśayedviṣam
Poisonous serpents do not encroach upon his shadow, even in dream. Whoever recites this mantra a hundred thousand times destroys poison by his very glance.
Verse 23 (garuda.1.19.23)
oṁ hrī hrau hrīṁ bhi(bhī) ruṇḍāyai svāhā karṇe japtā tviyaṁ vidyā daṣṭakasya viṣaṁ haret
"Om hri hrau hrim, salutation to Bhirunda, svaha." This lore, recited at the ear, removes the poison of the bitten person.
Verse 24 (garuda.1.19.24)
a ā nyasettu pādāgre i ī gulaphe'tha jānuni u ū e ai kaṭitaṭe o nābhau hṛdi au nyaset
One should place "a ā" at the tip of the foot, "i ī" at the ankle and the knee, "u ū" and "e ai" at the hip, "o" at the navel, and place "au" at the heart.
Verse 25 (garuda.1.19.25)
vakkre amuttamāṁge aḥ nyasedvai haṁsasaṁyutāḥ haṁso viṣādi ca harejjapto dhyāto'tha pūjitaḥ
One should place "aṁ" at the mouth and "aḥ" at the head, joined with the hansa mantra. The hansa mantra, when recited, meditated upon, and worshipped, removes poison and the like.
Verse 26 (garuda.1.19.26)
garuḍo'hamiti dhyātvā kuryyādviṣaharāṁ (rīṁ) kriyām haṁmantraṁ gātravinyastaṁ viṣādiharamīritam
Meditating "I myself am Garuda," one should perform the poison-removing rite. The mantra "haṁ," placed upon the body, is declared to remove poison and the like.
Verse 27 (garuda.1.19.27)
nyasya haṁsaṁ vāmakare nāsāmukhanirodhakṛt maṁtro hareddaṣṭakasya tvaṅmāṁsādigataṁ viṣam
Having placed "hansa" in the left hand, and closing the nostril and mouth in breath-restraint, this mantra removes the poison spread through the skin, flesh, and the rest of the bitten person.
Verse 28 (garuda.1.19.28)
sa vāyunā samākṛṣya daṣṭānāṁ garalaṁ haret tanau nyaseddaṣṭakasya nīlakaṇṭhādi saṁsmaret
By means of the breath, drawing it out, it removes the poison of those bitten. Having performed the placement on the bitten person's body, one should call to mind Nilakantha, Shiva, and the rest.
Verse 29 (garuda.1.19.29)
pītaṁ pratyaṁgirāmūlaṁ taṇḍuladbhirviṣāpaham punarnavāphalinīnāṁ mūlaṁ vakkrajamīdṛśam
Drinking the root of Pratyangira with rice-water destroys poison. The root of Punarnava and Phalini, held in the mouth, likewise destroys poison.
Verse 30 (garuda.1.19.30)
mūlaṁ śuklabṛhatyāstu karkoṭyāgairikarṇikam adbhirghṛṣṭaghṛtopetalepo'yaṁ viṣamardanaḥ
The root of white Brihati, together with Karkoti and red ochre-flower, ground with water and mixed with ghee, applied as a paste, crushes poison.
Verse 31 (garuda.1.19.31)
viṣamṛddhiṁ na vrajecca uṣṇaṁ pibati yo ghṛtam paṁcāṁgaṁ tu śirīṣasya mūlaṁ gṛṁjanajaṁ tathā
One who drinks warm ghee, in him the poison does not gain strength. The five parts of the Shirisha tree, and likewise the root of the onion,
Verse 32 (garuda.1.19.32)
sarvāṁgalepataśacāpi pānādvā viṣahṛdbhavet hrīṁ gonasādiviṣahṛt
applied over the whole body or drunk, likewise destroy poison. "Hrim" destroys the venom of the gonasa serpent and the like.
Verse 33 (garuda.1.19.33)
hṛllalāṭavisargāntaṁ dhyātaṁ vaśyā dikṛdbhavet nyastaṁ yonau vaśetkanyāṁ kuryyānmadajalāvilam
Meditated upon, from "Hrim" up to the visarga at the forehead, it accomplishes subjugation and the like. Placed at the place of generation, it can subjugate a maiden and stir her to passion.
Verse 34 (garuda.1.19.34)
japtvā saptāṣṭasāhastraṁ garutmāniva sarvagaḥ kaviḥ syācchrutidharī ca vaśyāḥ strīścāyurāpnuyāt viṣahṛtsyātkathā tadvanmaṇirvyāsaḥ smṛto dhruvam
Having recited it seven or eight thousand times, becoming all-pervading like Garuda, a man becomes a poet and one who retains all he has heard, subjugates women, and attains long life. It destroys poison; this account, precious as a jewel, is remembered as certainly spoken by Vyasa.
