Chapter 17All chaptersChapter 19

Verse 1 (garuda.1.18.1)

sūta uvāca garuḍoktaṁ kaśyapāya vakṣye mṛtyuñjayārcanam uddhārapūrvakaṁ puṇyaṁ sarvadevamayaṁ matam

Suta said: I shall declare the worship of Mrityunjaya, as spoken by Garuda to Kashyapa — sacred, together with the extraction of its seed-syllable, and held to embody all the gods.

Verse 2 (garuda.1.18.2)

oṅkāraṁ pūrvamuddhṛtya ju(hu)ṅkā̃raṁ tadanantaram savisargaṁ tṛtīyaṁ syānmṛtyudāridryamardanam

First extracting the syllable Om, then the syllable "juṁ" (or "huṁ"), and third, with visarga — this destroys death and poverty.

Verse 3 (garuda.1.18.3)

īśaviṣṇavarkadevyādikavacaṁ sarvasādhakam amṛteśaṁ mahāmantraṁtryakṣaraṁ pūjanaṁ samam japanānmṛtyuhīnāḥ syuḥ sarvapāpavivarjitāḥ

This is the armor of Ishvara, Vishnu, the Sun, the Goddess, and the rest, effective for every seeker. This three-syllabled great mantra of Amriteshvara is uniformly worthy of worship. By reciting it, men become free of death and free of every sin.

Verse 4 (garuda.1.18.4)

śatajapyādvedaphalaṁ yajñatīrthaphalaṁ labhet aṣṭottaraśatājjāpyātrisandhyaṁ mṛtyu śatrujita

By reciting it a hundred times, one obtains the fruit of Vedic study, and the fruit of sacrifice and pilgrimage as well. By reciting it a hundred and eight times at the three twilights, one conquers death and one's enemies.

Verse 5 (garuda.1.18.5)

dhyāyecca sitapadmasthaṁ varadaṁ cābhayaṁ kare dvābhyāṁ cāmṛtakumbhaṁ tu cintayedamṛteśvaram

One should meditate upon Amriteshvara, seated upon a white lotus, his hands showing the gestures of boon-giving and fearlessness, and holding in two other hands a pot of nectar.

Verse 6 (garuda.1.18.6)

tasyaivāṁgagatāṁ devīmamṛtāmṛtabhāṣiṇī(vini) m kalaśaṁ dakṣiṇe haste vāmahaste saroruham

One should also meditate upon the goddess Amrita, at his very side, speaking words of nectar, holding a pot in her right hand and a lotus in her left.

Verse 7 (garuda.1.18.7)

japedaṣṭasahastraṁ vai trisandhyaṁ māsamekataḥ jarāmṛtyumahāvyādhiśatrucchivaśāntidam

One should recite it eight thousand times, at the three twilights, for a full month. This destroys old age, death, great disease, and enemies, and grants well-being and peace.

Verse 8 (garuda.1.18.8)

āhvānaṁ sthāpanaṁ rodhaṁ sannidhānaṁ niveśanam pādyamā camanaṁ snānamarghyaṁ straganulepanam

Invocation, establishment, enclosure, drawing-near, installation, water for the feet, sipping-water, bathing, arghya, garland, and anointment,

Verse 9 (garuda.1.18.9)

dīpāṁbaraṁ bhūṣaṇaṁ ca naivadyaṁ pānavījanam mātrāmudrājapadhyānaṁ dakṣiṇā cāhutiḥ stutiḥ

lamp, cloth, ornament, food-offering, drink and fanning, the mystic syllable-placements, ritual gestures, recitation, meditation, the priestly fee, oblation, praise —

Verse 10 (garuda.1.18.10)

vādyaṁ gatiṁ ca nṛtyaṁ ca nyāsayogaṁ pradakṣiṇam praṇatirmantraśayyā ca vandanaṁ ca visarjanam

music, ceremonial movement, dance, the yoga of ritual placement, circumambulation, prostration, laying the deity to rest with mantras, salutation, and dismissal —

Verse 11 (garuda.1.18.11)

ṣaḍaṁgādiprakāreṇa pūjanaṁ tu kramoditam parameśamukhodrītaṁ yo jānāti sa pūjakaḥ

In this way, through the six-limb rite and the rest, the sequential worship has been declared, proceeding directly from the mouth of the Supreme Lord. Whoever knows this is the true worshipper.

Verse 12 (garuda.1.18.12)

arghyapātrārcanaṁ cādauvastreṇaiva tu tāḍanam śodhanaṁ kavacenaiva amṛtīkaraṇaṁ tataḥ

First, worship of the arghya vessel; then striking the water with cloth; purification with the armor-mantra; and then transforming it into nectar.

Verse 13 (garuda.1.18.13)

pūjā cādhāraśaktyādeḥ prāṇāyāmaṁ tathāsane pīṭhaśuddhiṁ tataḥ kuryyācchoṣaṇādyaistataḥ smaret

Worship of the supporting power and the rest, and the performance of breath-control upon one's seat. Then one should purify the seat, and thereafter contemplate the body through desiccation and the other purificatory acts.

Verse 14 (garuda.1.18.14)

ātmānaṁ devarūpaṁ ca karāṁganyāsakaṁ caret ātmānaṁ pūjayetpaścājyo tīrūpaṁ hṛdabjataḥ

Regarding oneself as of divine form, one should perform the placement upon the hands and limbs. Then one should worship one's own self, in the form of light, arising from the lotus of the heart.

Verse 15 (garuda.1.18.15)

mūrttau vā sthaṇḍile vāpi kṣipetpuṣpaṁ tu bhāsvaram āhvānadvārapūjārthaṁ pūjā cādhāraśaktitaḥ

Upon the image, or upon the altar, one should cast that radiant light with a flower. For the worship of the gateway of invocation, one should worship through the supporting power.

Verse 16 (garuda.1.18.16)

sānnidhyakaraṇaṁ deve parivārasya pūjanam aṁgaṣaṭkasya pūjā vai karttavyā ca vipaścitaiḥ

Establishing nearness within the deity, the worship of the attendant deities, and the worship of the six limbs — all this must be performed by the learned.

Verse 17 (garuda.1.18.17)

dharmādayaśca śakrādyāḥ sāyudhāḥ parivārakāḥ yugavedamuhūrttāśca pūjeyaṁ bhuktimuktikṛt

Dharma and the rest, Indra and the other gods with their weapons, are the attendant deities; and the ages, the Vedas, and the auspicious moments too. This worship confers both enjoyment and liberation.

Verse 18 (garuda.1.18.18)

mātṛkāśca gaṇāṁścādau nandigaṅge ca pūjayet mahākālaṁ ca yamanāṁ dehalyāṁ pūjayetpurā

First one should worship the Matrikas and the Ganas, and also Nandi and Ganga. As of old, one should worship Mahakala and Yamuna at the threshold.

Verse 19 (garuda.1.18.19)

oṁ amṛteśvara oṁ bhairavāya namaḥ evaṁ oṁ juṁ haṁsaḥ sūryyāya namaḥ

"Om Amriteshvara, Om, salutation to Bhairava." Likewise, "Om juṁ hansaḥ, salutation to the Sun."

Verse 20 (garuda.1.18.20)

evaṁ śivāya kṛṣṇāya brahmaṇe ca gaṇāya ca caṇḍikāyai sarasvatyai mahālakṣmādi pūjayet

In the same way one should worship Shiva, Krishna, Brahma, Ganapati, Chandika, Sarasvati, Mahalakshmi, and the rest.
