The Rite of Sun Worship

Verse 1 (garuda.1.17.1)

।।हरिरुवाच । पुनः सूर्य्यार्चनं वक्ष्ये यदुक्तं धनदाय हि । अष्टपत्रं लिखेत्पद्मं शुचौ देशे सकर्णिकम्

hariruvāca punaḥ sūryyārcanaṁ vakṣye yaduktaṁ dhanadāya hi aṣṭapatraṁ likhetpadmaṁ śucau deśe sakarṇikam

Hari said: Now I shall again declare the worship of the Sun, as it was told to Kubera. In a pure spot, one should draw an eight-petaled lotus with its pericarp.

Verse 2 (garuda.1.17.2)

आवाहनीं ततो बद्धा मुद्रामावाहयेद्धरिम् । खखोल्कं स्थाप्य मुद्रां तु स्थापयेन्मन्त्ररूपिणीम्

āvāhanīṁ tato baddhā mudrāmāvāhayeddharim khakholkaṁ sthāpya mudrāṁ tu sthāpayenmantrarūpiṇīm

Then, forming the invocation mudra, one should invoke Hari. Having established Khakholka, the Sun, one should establish the mudra that embodies the mantra.

Verse 3 (garuda.1.17.3)

आग्नेय्यां दिशि देवस्य हृदयं स्थापयेच्छिव ! । ऐशान्यां तु शिरः स्थाप्यं नैर्ऋत्यां विन्यसेच्छिखाम्

āgneyyāṁ diśi devasya hṛdayaṁ sthāpayecchiva ! aiśānyāṁ tu śiraḥ sthāpyaṁ nairṛtyāṁ vinyasecchikhām

O Shiva, in the south-east one should establish the heart of the god. In the north-east the head should be established, and in the south-west one should place the crest.

Verse 4 (garuda.1.17.4)

पौरन्दर्य्यां न्यसेद्धर्म्ममेकाग्रस्थितमानसः । वायव्यां चैव नेत्रं तु वारुण्यामस्त्रमेव च

paurandaryyāṁ nyaseddharmmamekāgrasthitamānasaḥ vāyavyāṁ caiva netraṁ tu vāruṇyāmastrameva ca

With focused mind, one should place "dharma," the armor, in Indra's quarter, the east. In the north-west, the eyes; and in Varuna's quarter, the west, the weapon.

Verse 5 (garuda.1.17.5)

ऐशान्यां स्थापयेत्सोमं पौरन्दर्य्यां तु लोहितम् । आग्नेय्यां सोमतनयं याम्यां चैव बृहस्पतिम्

aiśānyāṁ sthāpayetsomaṁ paurandaryyāṁ tu lohitam āgneyyāṁ somatanayaṁ yāmyāṁ caiva bṛhaspatim

In the north-east one should establish the Moon, and in the east, the red one, Mars. In the south-east, the son of the Moon, Mercury; and in the south, Jupiter.

Verse 6 (garuda.1.17.6)

नैर्ऋत्यां दानवगुरुं वारुण्यां तु शनैश्चरम् । वायव्यां च तथा केतुं कौबेर्य्यां राहुमेव च

nairṛtyāṁ dānavaguruṁ vāruṇyāṁ tu śanaiścaram vāyavyāṁ ca tathā ketuṁ kauberyyāṁ rāhumeva ca

In the south-west, the teacher of the demons, Venus; in the west, Saturn. In the north-west, Ketu; and in the north, Kubera's quarter, Rahu.

Verse 7 (garuda.1.17.7)

द्वितीयायां तु कक्षायां सूर्य्यान्द्वादश पूजयेत् । भगः सूर्य्योऽर्य्यमा चैव मित्रो वै वरुणस्तथा

dvitīyāyāṁ tu kakṣāyāṁ sūryyāndvādaśa pūjayet bhagaḥ sūryyo'ryyamā caiva mitro vai varuṇastathā

In the second circle, one should worship the twelve suns, the Adityas — Bhaga, Surya, Aryaman, Mitra, Varuna,

Verse 8 (garuda.1.17.8)

सविता चैव धाता च विवस्वांश्च महाबलः । त्वष्टा पूषा तथा चेन्द्रो द्वादशो विष्णुरुच्यते

savitā caiva dhātā ca vivasvāṁśca mahābalaḥ tvaṣṭā pūṣā tathā cendro dvādaśo viṣṇurucyate

Savita, Dhata, the mighty Vivasvan, Tvashta, Pusha, Indra, and the twelfth is called Vishnu.

Verse 9 (garuda.1.17.9)

पूर्वादावर्चयेद्देवानिन्द्रादीञ्छ्रद्धया नरः । जया च विजया चैव जयन्ति चापराजिता । शेषश्च वासुकिश्चैव नागानित्यादि पूजयेत्

pūrvādāvarcayeddevānindrādīñchraddhayā naraḥ jayā ca vijayā caiva jayanti cāparājitā śeṣaśca vāsukiścaiva nāgānityādi pūjayet

In the east and the other quarters, one should worship Indra and the other gods with faith. One should also worship Jaya, Vijaya, Jayanti, Aparajita, and Shesha, Vasuki, and the other serpents.
