Meditation on Hari and Worship of the Sun

Verse 1 (garuda.1.16.1)

।।रुद्र उवाच । पुनर्ध्यानं समाचक्ष्व शंखचक्रगदाधर । विष्णोरीशस्य देवस्य शुद्धस्य परमात्मनः

rudra uvāca punardhyānaṁ samācakṣva śaṁkhacakragadādhara viṣṇorīśasya devasya śuddhasya paramātmanaḥ

Rudra said: O bearer of the conch, discus, and mace, again declare the meditation upon Vishnu, the pure Supreme Self, the Lord, the God.

Verse 2 (garuda.1.16.2)

हरिरुवाच । श्रृणु रुद्र ! हरेर्ध्यानं संसारतरुनाशनम् । दृशिरूपमनन्तं च सर्वव्याप्यजमव्ययम्

hariruvāca śrṛṇu rudra ! harerdhyānaṁ saṁsāratarunāśanam dṛśirūpamanantaṁ ca sarvavyāpyajamavyayam

Hari said: Listen, O Rudra, to the meditation upon Hari, which destroys the tree of worldly existence — the form of seeing, infinite, all-pervading, unborn, imperishable.

Verse 3 (garuda.1.16.3)

अक्षरं सर्वगं नित्यं महद्ब्रह्मास्ति केवलम् । सर्वस्य जगतो मूलं सर्वगं परमेशवरम्

akṣaraṁ sarvagaṁ nityaṁ mahadbrahmāsti kevalam sarvasya jagato mūlaṁ sarvagaṁ parameśavaram

Imperishable, all-pervading, eternal, existing only as the great Brahman, the root of the whole world, all-pervading, the Supreme Lord,

Verse 4 (garuda.1.16.4)

सर्वभूतहृदिस्थं वै सर्वभूतमहेश्वरम् । सर्वाधारं निराधारं सर्वकारणकारणम्

sarvabhūtahṛdisthaṁ vai sarvabhūtamaheśvaram sarvādhāraṁ nirādhāraṁ sarvakāraṇakāraṇam

dwelling in the hearts of all beings, the great Lord of all beings, the support of all, yet himself without support, the cause of all causes,

Verse 5 (garuda.1.16.5)

अलेपकं तथा मुक्तं मुक्तयोगिविचिन्तितम् । स्थूलदेहविहीनं च चक्षुषा परिवर्जितम्

alepakaṁ tathā muktaṁ muktayogivicintitam sthūladehavihīnaṁ ca cakṣuṣā parivarjitam

untainted, liberated, contemplated by liberated yogis, free of the gross body, and free of the eye,

Verse 6 (garuda.1.16.6)

वागिन्द्रियविहीनं च प्राणिधर्म्मविवर्जितम् । प्राणेद्रियविहीनं च वाग्धर्मपरिवर्जितम् । पायूपस्थविहीनं च सर्वैंन्द्रिय विवर्जितम्

vāgindriyavihīnaṁ ca prāṇidharmmavivarjitam prāṇedriyavihīnaṁ ca vāgdharmaparivarjitam pāyūpasthavihīnaṁ ca sarvaiṁndriya vivarjitam

free of the organ of speech, free of the properties of living beings, free of the sense of breath, free of the properties of speech, free of the organs of excretion and generation, free of all the senses,

Verse 7 (garuda.1.16.7)

मनोविरहितं तद्वन्मनोधर्म्मविवर्जितम् । बुद्ध्या विहीनं देवेशं चेतसा परिवर्जितम्

manovirahitaṁ tadvanmanodharmmavivarjitam buddhyā vihīnaṁ deveśaṁ cetasā parivarjitam

likewise free of the mind, free too of the properties of the mind — that Lord of gods, free of intellect, and free too of mind-stuff,

Verse 8 (garuda.1.16.8)

अहंकारविहीनं वै बुद्धिधर्म्मविवर्जितम् । प्राणेन रहितं चैव ह्यपानेन विवर्जितम्

ahaṁkāravihīnaṁ vai buddhidharmmavivarjitam prāṇena rahitaṁ caiva hyapānena vivarjitam

free of egoism, free too of the properties of intellect, free of the prana breath, free too of apana,

Verse 9 (garuda.1.16.9)

व्यानाख्यवायुहीनं वै प्राणधर्म्मविवर्जितम् । हरिरुवाच । पुनः सूर्य्यर्च्चनं वक्ष्ये यदुक्तं भृगवे पुरा

vyānākhyavāyuhīnaṁ vai prāṇadharmmavivarjitam hariruvāca punaḥ sūryyarccanaṁ vakṣye yaduktaṁ bhṛgave purā

free of the breath called vyana, and free of the properties of breath — thus should one meditate on that Supreme Self. Hari said: Now I shall again declare the worship of the Sun, as it was told long ago to Bhrigu.

Verse 10 (garuda.1.16.10)

ॐ खखोल्काय नमः । सूर्य्यस्य मूलमन्त्रोऽयं भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदायकः

oṁ khakholkāya namaḥ sūryyasya mūlamantro'yaṁ bhuktimuktipradāyakaḥ

"Om, salutation to Khakholka." This is the root-mantra of the Sun, which grants both enjoyment and liberation.

Verse 11 (garuda.1.16.11)

ॐ खखोल्काय त्रिदशाय नमः । ॐ विचि ठठ शिरसे नमः । ॐ ज्ञानिने ठठ शिखायै नमः । ॐ सहस्ररश्मये ठठ कवचाय नमः

oṁ khakholkāya tridaśāya namaḥ oṁ vici ṭhaṭha śirase namaḥ oṁ jñānine ṭhaṭha śikhāyai namaḥ oṁ sahasraraśmaye ṭhaṭha kavacāya namaḥ

"Om, salutation to Khakholka, lord of the thirty gods." "Om vici thatha, to the head." "Om, to the Knower, thatha, to the crest." "Om, to the thousand-rayed one, thatha, to the armor."

Verse 12 (garuda.1.16.12)

ॐ सर्वतेजोऽधिपतये ठठ अस्त्राय नमः । ॐ ज्वलज्वल प्रज्वलप्रज्वल ठठ नमः

oṁ sarvatejo'dhipataye ṭhaṭha astrāya namaḥ oṁ jvalajvala prajvalaprajvala ṭhaṭha namaḥ

"Om, to the Lord of all radiance, thatha, to the weapon." "Om, blaze, blaze, flare up, flare up, thatha, salutation."

Verse 13 (garuda.1.16.13)

अग्निप्राकारमन्त्रोऽयं सूर्य्यस्याघविनाशनः । ॐ आदित्याय विद्महे, विश्वभा वाय धीमहि, तन्नः सूर्य्य प्रचोदयात्

agniprākāramantro'yaṁ sūryyasyāghavināśanaḥ oṁ ādityāya vidmahe, viśvabhā vāya dhīmahi, tannaḥ sūryya pracodayāt

This "fire-rampart" mantra destroys the sins connected with the Sun. "Om, let us know the Aditya; let us meditate on the source of the universe; may that Sun impel us" — this is the Surya-Gayatri.

Verse 14 (garuda.1.16.14)

सकलीकरणं कुर्य्याद्गायत्र्या भास्करस्य च । धर्म्मात्मने च पूर्वस्मिन्यमा येति च दक्षिणे

sakalīkaraṇaṁ kuryyādgāyatryā bhāskarasya ca dharmmātmane ca pūrvasminyamā yeti ca dakṣiṇe

With that Gayatri of the Sun one should perform the rite of purification of the body. In the east, one should worship with the mantra "to the righteous one"; and in the south with "to Yama";

Verse 15 (garuda.1.16.15)

दण्डनायकाय ततो दैवतायेति चोत्तरे । श्यामपिंगलमैशान्यामाग्नेय्यां दीक्षितं यजेत्

daṇḍanāyakāya tato daivatāyeti cottare śyāmapiṁgalamaiśānyāmāgneyyāṁ dīkṣitaṁ yajet

then with "to the wielder of the rod," and in the north with "to the deity." In the north-east, worship the dark-tawny form; and in the south-east, worship the initiated one.

Verse 16 (garuda.1.16.16)

वज्रपाणिं च नैर्ऋत्यां भूर्भुवःस्वश्च वायवे । ॐ चन्द्राय नक्षत्राधिपतये नमः । ॐ अंगारकाय क्षितिसुताय नमः । ॐ बुधाय सोमसुताय नमः । ॐ वागीश्वराय सर्वविद्याधिपतये नमः । ॐ शुक्राय महर्षये भृगुसुताय नमः । ॐ शनैश्चराय सूर्य्यात्मजाय नमः । ॐ राहवे नमः । ॐ केतवे नमः

vajrapāṇiṁ ca nairṛtyāṁ bhūrbhuvaḥsvaśca vāyave oṁ candrāya nakṣatrādhipataye namaḥ oṁ aṁgārakāya kṣitisutāya namaḥ oṁ budhāya somasutāya namaḥ oṁ vāgīśvarāya sarvavidyādhipataye namaḥ oṁ śukrāya maharṣaye bhṛgusutāya namaḥ oṁ śanaiścarāya sūryyātmajāya namaḥ oṁ rāhave namaḥ oṁ ketave namaḥ

In the south-west, worship the thunderbolt-handed one, and in the north-west, "Bhur bhuvah svah." "Om, salutation to the Moon, Lord of the constellations. Om, salutation to Mars, son of the earth. Om, salutation to Mercury, son of the Moon. Om, salutation to the Lord of speech, Jupiter, Lord of all learning. Om, salutation to Venus, the great sage, son of Bhrigu. Om, salutation to Saturn, son of the Sun. Om, salutation to Rahu. Om, salutation to Ketu."

Verse 17 (garuda.1.16.17)

पूर्वादीशानपर्य्यन्ता एते पूज्या वृषध्वज । ॐ अनूकाय नमः । ॐ प्रथमनाथाय नमः । ॐ बुद्धाय नमः

pūrvādīśānaparyyantā ete pūjyā vṛṣadhvaja oṁ anūkāya namaḥ oṁ prathamanāthāya namaḥ oṁ buddhāya namaḥ

O bearer of the bull-banner, these are to be worshipped from the east up to the north-east. "Om, salutation to Anuka." "Om, salutation to the First Lord." "Om, salutation to the Buddha."

Verse 18 (garuda.1.16.18)

ॐ भगवन्नपरिमितमयूखमालिन् ! सकलजगत्पते ! सप्ताश्ववाहन ! चतुर्भुज ! परमसिद्धिप्रद ! विस्फुलिंगपिंगल ! तत एह्येहि इदमर्घ्यं मम शिरसि गतं गृह्णगृह्ण तेजोग्ररूपम् अनग्न ! ज्वलज्वल ठठ नमः

oṁ bhagavannaparimitamayūkhamālin ! sakalajagatpate ! saptāśvavāhana ! caturbhuja ! paramasiddhiprada ! visphuliṁgapiṁgala ! tata ehyehi idamarghyaṁ mama śirasi gataṁ gṛhṇagṛhṇa tejograrūpam anagna ! jvalajvala ṭhaṭha namaḥ

"Om, O blessed one, garlanded with boundless rays! O Lord of the whole universe! O rider of seven horses! O four-armed one! O giver of supreme accomplishment! O tawny one, bright as sparks! Come here, come. Accept, accept this offering-water raised to my head, O fierce form of radiance, O one beyond fire, blaze, blaze, thatha, salutation."

Verse 19 (garuda.1.16.19)

अनेनावाह्य मन्त्रेण ततः सूर्य्यं विसर्जयेत् । ॐ नमो भगवते आदित्याय सहस्त्र किरणाय गच्छ सुखं पुनरागमनायेति

anenāvāhya mantreṇa tataḥ sūryyaṁ visarjayet oṁ namo bhagavate ādityāya sahastra kiraṇāya gaccha sukhaṁ punarāgamanāyeti

Having thus invoked with this mantra, one should then take leave of the Sun: "Om, salutation to the Lord, the sun of a thousand rays; go now in peace, to return again" — thus.
