Verse 1 (garuda.1.15.1)
।।रुद्र उवाच । संसारसागराद्धोरान्मुच्यते किं जपन्प्रभो । नरस्तन्मे परं जप्यं कथय त्वं जनार्द्दन
rudra uvāca saṁsārasāgarāddhorānmucyate kiṁ japanprabho narastanme paraṁ japyaṁ kathaya tvaṁ janārddana
Rudra said: O Lord, by reciting what does a man become freed from this terrible ocean of worldly existence? O Janardana, tell me that supreme mantra worthy of recitation.
Verse 2 (garuda.1.15.2)
।।हरिरुवाच । परेश्वरं परं ब्रह्म परमात्मानमव्ययम् । विष्णुं नामसहस्त्रेण स्तुवन्मुक्तो भवेन्नरः
hariruvāca pareśvaraṁ paraṁ brahma paramātmānamavyayam viṣṇuṁ nāmasahastreṇa stuvanmukto bhavennaraḥ
Hari said: A man who praises the Supreme Lord, the Supreme Brahman, the imperishable Supreme Self Vishnu, with his thousand names, becomes liberated.
Verse 3 (garuda.1.15.3)
यत्पवित्रं परं जप्यं कथयामि वृषध्वज ! । श्रृणुष्वावहितो भूत्वा सर्वपापविनाशनम्
yatpavitraṁ paraṁ japyaṁ kathayāmi vṛṣadhvaja ! śrṛṇuṣvāvahito bhūtvā sarvapāpavināśanam
O bearer of the bull-banner, I shall now declare that which is pure and supreme to recite, which destroys all sin — listen with focused mind.
Verse 4 (garuda.1.15.4)
ॐ वासुदेवो महाविष्णुर्वामनो वासवो वसुः । बालचन्द्र निभो बालो बलभद्रो बलाधिपः
oṁ vāsudevo mahāviṣṇurvāmano vāsavo vasuḥ bālacandra nibho bālo balabhadro balādhipaḥ
Om. Vasudeva, Mahavishnu, Vamana, Vasava, Vasu, Moon-crescent-like, the Child, Balabhadra, Lord of strength,

बलिबन्धनकृद्वेधा वरेण्यो वेदवित्किविः । वेदकर्त्ता वेदरूपो वेद्यो वेदपरिप्लुतः
balibandhanakṛdvedhā vareṇyo vedavitkiviḥ vedakarttā vedarūpo vedyo vedapariplutaḥ
Binder of Bali, the Ordainer, worthy of choice, knower of the Vedas, the poet, maker of the Vedas, the very form of the Veda, the knowable, filled with the Vedas,

वेदाङ्गवेत्ता वेदेशो बलाधारो बलार्दनः । अविकारो वरेशश्च वरुणो वरुणाधिपः
vedāṅgavettā vedeśo balādhāro balārdanaḥ avikāro vareśaśca varuṇo varuṇādhipaḥ
knower of the Vedangas, Lord of the Vedas, the support of strength, the destroyer of strength, changeless, Lord of boons, Varuna, Lord of Varuna,

वीरहा च बृहद्वीरो वन्दितः परमेश्वरः । आत्मा च परमात्मा च प्रत्यगात्मा वियत्परः
vīrahā ca bṛhadvīro vanditaḥ parameśvaraḥ ātmā ca paramātmā ca pratyagātmā viyatparaḥ
slayer of heroes, the great hero, the revered one, the Supreme Lord, the Self, the Supreme Self, the inner Self, beyond even the sky,

पद्मनाभः पद्मनिधिः पद्महस्तो गदाधरः । परमः परभूतश्च पुरुषोत्तम ईश्वरः
padmanābhaḥ padmanidhiḥ padmahasto gadādharaḥ paramaḥ parabhūtaśca puruṣottama īśvaraḥ
lotus-naveled, treasury of lotuses, lotus-handed, mace-bearer, the supreme one, beyond the beyond, Purushottama, the Lord,

पद्मजङ्घः पुण्डरीकः पद्ममालाधरः प्रियः । पद्माक्षः पद्मगर्भश्च पर्जन्यः पद्मसंस्थितः
padmajaṅghaḥ puṇḍarīkaḥ padmamālādharaḥ priyaḥ padmākṣaḥ padmagarbhaśca parjanyaḥ padmasaṁsthitaḥ
lotus-shanked, the lotus itself, garlanded with lotuses, the beloved, lotus-eyed, lotus-wombed, Parjanya lord of rain, seated in the lotus,

अपारः परमार्थश्च पराणां च परः प्रभुः । पण्डितः पण्डितेड्यश्च पवित्रः पापमर्दकः
apāraḥ paramārthaśca parāṇāṁ ca paraḥ prabhuḥ paṇḍitaḥ paṇḍiteḍyaśca pavitraḥ pāpamardakaḥ
boundless, the ultimate truth, the supreme Lord even among the supreme, the learned one, praised by scholars, the pure, the destroyer of sin,

शुद्धः प्रकाशरूपश्च पवित्रः परिरक्षकः । पिपासावर्जितः पाद्यः पुरुषः प्रकृतिस्तथाः
śuddhaḥ prakāśarūpaśca pavitraḥ parirakṣakaḥ pipāsāvarjitaḥ pādyaḥ puruṣaḥ prakṛtistathāḥ
the pure, the very form of light, the sacred, the protector, free of thirst, worthy of the offering of water, the Person, and Prakriti (nature) as well,

प्रधानं पृथिवीपद्मं पद्मनाभः प्रियप्रदः । सर्वेशः सर्वगः सर्वः सर्ववित्सर्वदः सुरः
pradhānaṁ pṛthivīpadmaṁ padmanābhaḥ priyapradaḥ sarveśaḥ sarvagaḥ sarvaḥ sarvavitsarvadaḥ suraḥ
the primal principle, the earth as a lotus, lotus-naveled, giver of what is dear, Lord of all, all-pervading, the form of all, all-knowing, giver of all, the god,
Verse 13 (garuda.1.15.13)
सर्वस्य जगतो धाम सर्वदर्शो च सर्वभृत् । सर्वानुग्रहकृद्देवः सर्वभूतहृदि स्थितः
sarvasya jagato dhāma sarvadarśo ca sarvabhṛt sarvānugrahakṛddevaḥ sarvabhūtahṛdi sthitaḥ
the abode of the whole world, the seer of all, the sustainer of all, the god who shows grace to all, dwelling in the hearts of all beings,

सर्वपूज्यश्च सर्वाद्यः सर्वदेवनमस्कृतः । सर्वस्य जगतो मूलं सकलो निष्कलोऽनलः
sarvapūjyaśca sarvādyaḥ sarvadevanamaskṛtaḥ sarvasya jagato mūlaṁ sakalo niṣkalo'nalaḥ
worshipped by all, the origin of all, saluted by all the gods, the root of the whole world, with parts, without parts, the form of fire,

सर्वगोप्ता सर्वनिष्ठः सर्वकारणकारणम् । सर्वध्येयः सर्वमित्रः सर्वदेस्ववरूपधृक्
sarvagoptā sarvaniṣṭhaḥ sarvakāraṇakāraṇam sarvadhyeyaḥ sarvamitraḥ sarvadesvavarūpadhṛk
protector of all, the foundation of all, the cause even of all causes, worthy of meditation by all, friend of all, bearing the very form of all,

सर्वाध्यक्षः सुराऽध्यक्ष सुरासुरनमस्कृतः । दुष्टानां च सुराणां च सर्वदा घातकोऽन्तकः
sarvādhyakṣaḥ surā'dhyakṣa surāsuranamaskṛtaḥ duṣṭānāṁ ca surāṇāṁ ca sarvadā ghātako'ntakaḥ
overseer of all, overseer of the gods, saluted by gods and demons alike, the ever-slayer of the wicked, even among the gods, the ender of all,

सत्यपालश्च सन्नाभः सिद्धेशः सिद्धवन्दितः । सिद्धसाध्यः सिद्धसिद्धः साध्यसिद्धो (सिद्धिसिद्ध) हृदीश्वरः
satyapālaśca sannābhaḥ siddheśaḥ siddhavanditaḥ siddhasādhyaḥ siddhasiddhaḥ sādhyasiddho (siddhisiddha) hṛdīśvaraḥ
guardian of truth, of beautiful navel, lord of the perfected, saluted by the perfected, attained by the perfected, perfect among the perfect, perfect among the attainable, Lord of the heart,

शरणं जगतश्चैव श्रेयः क्षेमस्तथैव च । शुभकृच्छोभनः सौम्यः सत्यः सत्यपराक्रमः
śaraṇaṁ jagataścaiva śreyaḥ kṣemastathaiva ca śubhakṛcchobhanaḥ saumyaḥ satyaḥ satyaparākramaḥ
the refuge of the world, well-being itself, security itself, the doer of good, the resplendent, the gentle, the true, of true valor,

सत्यस्थः सत्यसङ्कल्पः सत्यवित्सत्य (त्प) दस्तथ । धर्मो धर्म्मी च कर्मी च सर्वकर्म्मविवर्जितः
satyasthaḥ satyasaṅkalpaḥ satyavitsatya (tpa) dastatha dharmo dharmmī ca karmī ca sarvakarmmavivarjitaḥ
abiding in truth, of true resolve, knower of truth, of true station, dharma itself, the righteous one, the doer of action, yet free of all action,

कर्म्मकर्त्ता च कर्मैव क्रिया कार्य्यं तथैव च । श्रीपतिर्नृपतिः श्रीमान्सर्वस्य पतिरूर्जितः
karmmakarttā ca karmaiva kriyā kāryyaṁ tathaiva ca śrīpatirnṛpatiḥ śrīmānsarvasya patirūrjitaḥ
the doer of deeds, the deed itself, the action, the effect itself, Lord of Shri, Lord of kings, the glorious one, Lord of all, of great vigor,

सदेवानां पतिश्चैव वृष्णीनां पतिरीडितः । पतिर्हिरण्यगर्भस्य त्रिपुरान्तपतिस्तथा
sadevānāṁ patiścaiva vṛṣṇīnāṁ patirīḍitaḥ patirhiraṇyagarbhasya tripurāntapatistathā
Lord even of the gods, the celebrated Lord of the Vrishnis, Lord of Hiranyagarbha (Brahma), Lord even of the destroyer of Tripura,

पशूनां च पतिः प्रायो वसूनां पतिरेव च । पतिराखण्डलस्यैव वरूणस्य पतिस्तथा
paśūnāṁ ca patiḥ prāyo vasūnāṁ patireva ca patirākhaṇḍalasyaiva varūṇasya patistathā
chief Lord of animals, Lord even of the Vasus, Lord of Indra, and Lord even of Varuna,

वनस्पतीनां च पतिरनिलस्य पतिस्तथा । अनलस्य पतिश्चैव यमस्य पतिरेव च
vanaspatīnāṁ ca patiranilasya patistathā analasya patiścaiva yamasya patireva ca
Lord of forest-plants, Lord even of the wind, Lord even of fire, Lord even of Yama,

कुबेरस्य पतिश्चैव नक्षत्राणां पतिस्तथा । ओषधीनां पतिश्चैव वृक्षाणां च पतिस्तथा
kuberasya patiścaiva nakṣatrāṇāṁ patistathā oṣadhīnāṁ patiścaiva vṛkṣāṇāṁ ca patistathā
Lord even of Kubera, Lord of the constellations, Lord of the herbs, Lord even of the trees,

नागानां पतिरर्कस्य दक्षस्य पतिरेव च । सुहृदां च पतिश्चैव नृपाणां च पतिस्तथा
nāgānāṁ patirarkasya dakṣasya patireva ca suhṛdāṁ ca patiścaiva nṛpāṇāṁ ca patistathā
Lord of the serpents and of the sun, Lord even of Daksha, Lord of friends, Lord even of kings,

गन्धर्वाणां पतिश्चैव असूनां पतिरुत्तमः । पर्वतानां पतिश्चैव निम्नगानां पतिस्तथा
gandharvāṇāṁ patiścaiva asūnāṁ patiruttamaḥ parvatānāṁ patiścaiva nimnagānāṁ patistathā
Lord of the gandharvas, the supreme Lord of the vital breaths, Lord of mountains, Lord even of rivers,

सुराणां च पतिः श्रेष्ठः कपिलस्य पतिस्तथा । लतानां च पतिश्चैव वीरुधां च पतिस्तथा
surāṇāṁ ca patiḥ śreṣṭhaḥ kapilasya patistathā latānāṁ ca patiścaiva vīrudhāṁ ca patistathā
the foremost Lord of the gods, Lord even of Kapila, Lord of creepers, and Lord even of vines,

मुनीनां च पतिश्चैव सूर्य्यस्य पतिरुत्तमः । पतिश्चन्द्रमसः श्रेष्ठः सुक्रस्य पतिरेव च
munīnāṁ ca patiścaiva sūryyasya patiruttamaḥ patiścandramasaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ sukrasya patireva ca
Lord of the sages, the excellent Lord of the sun, the foremost Lord of the moon, Lord even of Venus,

ग्रहाणां च पतिश्चैव राक्षसानां पतिस्तथा । किन्नराणां पतिश्चैव द्विजानां पतिरुत्तमः
grahāṇāṁ ca patiścaiva rākṣasānāṁ patistathā kinnarāṇāṁ patiścaiva dvijānāṁ patiruttamaḥ
Lord of the planets, Lord even of the rakshasas, Lord of the kinnaras, the excellent Lord of brahmins,

सरितां च पतिश्चैव समुद्राणां पतिस्तथा । सरसां च पतिश्चैव भूतानां च पतिस्तथा
saritāṁ ca patiścaiva samudrāṇāṁ patistathā sarasāṁ ca patiścaiva bhūtānāṁ ca patistathā
Lord of the streams, Lord even of the oceans, Lord of the lakes, Lord even of the spirits,

वेतालानां पतिश्चैव कूष्माण्डानां पतिस्तथा । पक्षिणां च पतिः श्रेष्ठः पशूनां पतिरेव च
vetālānāṁ patiścaiva kūṣmāṇḍānāṁ patistathā pakṣiṇāṁ ca patiḥ śreṣṭhaḥ paśūnāṁ patireva ca
Lord of the vetalas, Lord even of the kushmandas, the foremost Lord of birds, Lord even of beasts,

महात्मा मंगलो मेयो मन्दरो मन्दरेश्वरः । मेरुर्माता प्रमाणं च माधवो मलवर्जितः
mahātmā maṁgalo meyo mandaro mandareśvaraḥ merurmātā pramāṇaṁ ca mādhavo malavarjitaḥ
the great soul, auspicious, measurable, Mount Mandara, Lord of Mount Mandara, Mount Meru, the mother, the very standard of measure, Madhava, free of impurity,

मालाधरो महादेवो महादेवेन पूजितः । महाशान्तो महाभागो मधुसूदन एव च
mālādharo mahādevo mahādevena pūjitaḥ mahāśānto mahābhāgo madhusūdana eva ca
wearer of the garland, Mahadeva, worshipped by Mahadeva himself, of great tranquility, greatly fortunate, and Madhusudana too,

महावीर्य्यो महाप्राणो मार्कण्डेयर्षिवन्दितः । मायात्मा मायया बद्धो मायया तु विवर्जितः
mahāvīryyo mahāprāṇo mārkaṇḍeyarṣivanditaḥ māyātmā māyayā baddho māyayā tu vivarjitaḥ
of great vigor, of great vital force, venerated by the sage Markandeya, of the nature of maya, seemingly bound by maya, yet free of maya,

मुनिस्तुतो मुनिर्मैत्रो महाना (रा) सो महाहनुः । महाबाहुर्महादान्तो मरणेन विवर्जितः
munistuto munirmaitro mahānā (rā) so mahāhanuḥ mahābāhurmahādānto maraṇena vivarjitaḥ
praised by sages, the sage, the friendly one, large-nosed, large-jawed, mighty-armed, of great restraint, free from death,

महावक्त्रो महात्मा च महाकायो महोदरः । महापादो महाग्रीवो महामानी महामनाः
mahāvaktro mahātmā ca mahākāyo mahodaraḥ mahāpādo mahāgrīvo mahāmānī mahāmanāḥ
great-mouthed, great-souled, great-bodied, great-bellied, great-footed, great-necked, of great pride, of great mind,

महागतिर्महाकीर्त्तिर्महारूपो महासुरः । मधुश्च माधवश्चैव महादेवो महेश्वरः

मखेज्यो मखरूपी च माननीयो मखेश्वरः । महावातो महाभागो महेशोऽतीतमानुषः
makhejyo makharūpī ca mānanīyo makheśvaraḥ mahāvāto mahābhāgo maheśo'tītamānuṣaḥ
worthy of worship in sacrifice, the form of sacrifice, venerable, Lord of sacrifice, of great gale, greatly fortunate, the great Lord, beyond mortal men,

मानवश्च मनुश्चैव मानवानां प्रियंकरः । मृगश्च मृगपूज्यश्च मृगाणां च पतिस्तथा
mānavaśca manuścaiva mānavānāṁ priyaṁkaraḥ mṛgaśca mṛgapūjyaśca mṛgāṇāṁ ca patistathā
the human, Manu, the one who does good to mankind, deer-formed, worshipped by deer, Lord of deer,

बुधस्य च पतिश्चैव पतिश्चैव बृहस्पतेः । पतिः शनैश्चरस्यैव राहोः केतोः पतिस्तथा
budhasya ca patiścaiva patiścaiva bṛhaspateḥ patiḥ śanaiścarasyaiva rāhoḥ ketoḥ patistathā
Lord of Mercury, Lord even of Jupiter, Lord of Saturn, Lord even of Rahu and Ketu,

लक्ष्मणो लक्षणश्चैव लम्बौष्ठो ललितस्तथा । नानालंकारसंयुक्तो नानाचन्दनचर्च्चितः

Lakshmana, bearer of auspicious marks, of full lips, graceful, adorned with manifold ornaments, anointed with manifold sandal-paste,

नानारसोज्जवलद्वक्त्रो नानापुष्पोपशोभितः । रामो रमापतिश्चैव सभार्य्यः परमेश्वरः
nānārasojjavaladvaktro nānāpuṣpopaśobhitaḥ rāmo ramāpatiścaiva sabhāryyaḥ parameśvaraḥ
of face bright with manifold flavors, adorned with manifold flowers, Rama, husband of Rama (Lakshmi), together with his consort, the Supreme Lord,

रत्नदो रत्नहर्त्ता च रूपी रूपविवर्जितः । महारूपोग्ररूपश्च सौम्यरूपस्तथैव च
ratnado ratnaharttā ca rūpī rūpavivarjitaḥ mahārūpograrūpaśca saumyarūpastathaiva ca
giver of jewels, taker of jewels, endowed with form, yet without form, of great form, of fierce form, and of gentle form as well,

नीलमेघनिभः शुद्धः कालमेघनिभस्तथा । धूमवर्णः पतिवर्णो नानारूपो ह्यवर्णकः
nīlameghanibhaḥ śuddhaḥ kālameghanibhastathā dhūmavarṇaḥ pativarṇo nānārūpo hyavarṇakaḥ
dark as a blue cloud, pure, dark as a black cloud, smoke-colored, colored like fine cloth, of manifold forms, colorless,

विरूपो रूपदश्चैव शुक्लवर्णस्तथैव च । सर्ववर्णो महायोगी यज्ञो (याज्यो) यज्ञकृदेव च
virūpo rūpadaścaiva śuklavarṇastathaiva ca sarvavarṇo mahāyogī yajño (yājyo) yajñakṛdeva ca
formless, giver of form, white-colored, of every color, the great yogi, the sacrifice, the performer of sacrifice,

सुवर्णवर्णवांश्चैव सुवर्णाख्यस्तथैव च सुवर्णावयवश्चैव सुवर्णः स्वर्णमेखलः
suvarṇavarṇavāṁścaiva suvarṇākhyastathaiva ca suvarṇāvayavaścaiva suvarṇaḥ svarṇamekhalaḥ
of golden hue, named Gold, of golden limbs, gold itself, girdled with gold,

सुवर्णस्य प्रदाता च सुवर्णांशस्तथैव च । सुवर्णस्य प्रियश्चैव सुवर्णाढ्यस्तथैव च

giver of gold, the very portion of gold, dear to gold, rich in gold,

सुपर्णी च महापर्णी सुपर्णस्य च कारणम् । वैनतेयस्तथादित्य आदिरादिकरः शिवः
suparṇī ca mahāparṇī suparṇasya ca kāraṇam vainateyastathāditya ādirādikaraḥ śivaḥ
possessed of Suparna (Garuda), of great wings, the cause of Suparna, the form of Vainateya (Garuda), the Sun, the beginning, the maker of the beginning, the auspicious one,

कारणं महतश्चैव प्रधानस्य च कारणम् । बुद्धीनां कारणं चैव कारणं मनसस्तथा
kāraṇaṁ mahataścaiva pradhānasya ca kāraṇam buddhīnāṁ kāraṇaṁ caiva kāraṇaṁ manasastathā
the cause of the great principle (mahat), the cause even of primordial nature, the cause of the intellects, the cause even of the mind,
Verse 50 (garuda.1.15.50)
कारणं चैतसश्चैव अहंकारस्य कारणम् । भूतानां कारणं तद्वत्कारणं च विभावसोः
kāraṇaṁ caitasaścaiva ahaṁkārasya kāraṇam bhūtānāṁ kāraṇaṁ tadvatkāraṇaṁ ca vibhāvasoḥ
the cause even of the mind-stuff, the cause of ego, the cause of the elements, the cause even of fire,

आकाशकारणं तद्वत्पृथिव्याः कारणं परम् । अण्डस्य कारणं चैव प्रकृतेः कारणं तथा
ākāśakāraṇaṁ tadvatpṛthivyāḥ kāraṇaṁ param aṇḍasya kāraṇaṁ caiva prakṛteḥ kāraṇaṁ tathā
the cause even of the sky, and the supreme cause of the earth, the cause of the cosmic egg, the cause even of nature,

देहस्य कारणं चैव चक्षुषश्चैव कारणम् । श्रोत्रस्य कारणं तद्वत्कारणं च त्वचस्तथा

the river, Nandi, Lord of Nandi, the form of Bharata, the destroyer of trees, the wielder of the discus, Lord of Shri, and Lord even of universal emperors,

iti nāmasahastraṁ te vṛṣabhadhvaja kīrttitam devasya viṣṇorīśasya sarvapāpavināśanam
O bearer of the bull-banner, thus has this thousand-fold hymn of names, of the God Vishnu the Lord, destroying all sin, been recounted to you.

पठन्द्विजश्च विष्णुत्वं क्षत्रियो जयमाप्नुयात् । वैश्यो धनं सुखं शूद्रो विष्णुभक्तिसमन्वितः
paṭhandvijaśca viṣṇutvaṁ kṣatriyo jayamāpnuyāt vaiśyo dhanaṁ sukhaṁ śūdro viṣṇubhaktisamanvitaḥ
The brahmin who recites it attains the very state of Vishnu; the kshatriya attains victory; the vaishya obtains wealth and happiness; and the shudra becomes endowed with devotion to Vishnu.
