Purvakhanda — Acharakanda · Chapter 14
The Yoga of Meditation
Verse 1 (garuda.1.14.1)
hariruvāca atha yogaṁ pravakṣyāmi bhuktimuktikaraṁ param dhyāyibhiḥ procyate dhyeyo dhyānena harirīśvaraḥ
Hari said: Now I shall declare that yoga, supreme, which grants both enjoyment and liberation. By meditators, Hari the Lord is declared, through meditation, to be the one worthy of meditation.
Verse 2 (garuda.1.14.2)
tacchṛṇuṣva maheśāna sarvapāpavināśanam viṣṇuḥ sarveśvaro'nantaḥ ṣaḍbhirbhūparivarjitaḥ
O great Lord, hear that which destroys all sin. Vishnu is the Lord of all, infinite, free of the six transformations of being, and free of gross materiality.
Verse 3 (garuda.1.14.3)
vāsudevo jagannātho brahmātmāsmyahameva hi dehidehasthito nityaḥ sarvadehavivarjitaḥ
Vasudeva, Lord of the universe, the self that is Brahman — I myself am he. Ever abiding within the body of the embodied, he is yet free of all bodily form.
Verse 4 (garuda.1.14.4)
dehadharmmavihīnaśca kṣarākṣaravivarjitaḥ ṣaḍvidheṣu sthito draṣṭā śrotā ghrātā hyatīndriyaḥ
He is devoid of the properties of the body, and free of both the perishable and the imperishable. Though present in the six senses as the seer, hearer, and smeller, he is beyond the senses.
Verse 5 (garuda.1.14.5)
taddharmmarahitaḥ sraṣṭā nāmagotravivarjitaḥ mantā manaḥ sthito devo manasā parivarjitaḥ
He is the creator, free of the properties of the senses, without name or lineage. He is the God who thinks, abiding in the mind, yet he is free of mind.
Verse 6 (garuda.1.14.6)
manodharmmavihīnaśca vijñānaṁ jñānameva ca boddhā buddhisthitaḥ sākṣī sarvajño buddhivarjitaḥ
He is devoid of the properties of the mind, and is himself both discernment and knowledge. Abiding in the intellect as the knower, the witness, the all-knowing one, he is yet free of intellect.
Verse 7 (garuda.1.14.7)
buddhidharmmavihīnaśca sarvaḥ sarvagato manaḥ sarvaprāṇivinirmuktaḥ prāṇadharmmavivarjitaḥ
He is devoid of the properties of the intellect, all-encompassing, all-pervading mind itself. Though free of all creatures, he is their very life-breath, yet free of the properties of breath.
Verse 8 (garuda.1.14.8)
prāṇaprāṇo mahāśānto bhayena parivarjitaḥ ahaṁkārādihīnaśca taddharmmaparivarjitaḥ
He is the breath of breath, of great tranquility, utterly free of fear. He is devoid of egoism and the rest, and free of their properties too.
Verse 9 (garuda.1.14.9)
tatsākṣī tanniyantā ca paramānandarūpakaḥ jāgratsvapnasuṣuptisthastatsākṣī tadvivarjitaḥ
He is their witness and their controller, the very form of supreme bliss. Present in waking, dream, and deep sleep as their witness, he is yet free of them.
Verse 10 (garuda.1.14.10)
turīyaḥ paramo dhātā dṛgrūpo guṇavarjitaḥ mukto buddho'jaro vyāpī satya ātmāsmyahaṁ śivaḥ
He is the fourth state, beyond the three, the supreme ordainer, the very form of seeing, free of all qualities. Liberated, awakened, unaging, all-pervading, the true Self — I myself am that auspicious one.
Verse 11 (garuda.1.14.11)
evaṁ ye mānavā vijñā dhyāyantīśaṁ paraṁ padam prāpnuyuste ca tadrūpaṁ nātra kāryyā vicāraṇā
Thus, those wise men who meditate upon the Lord attain the supreme state and his very form — of this there should be no doubt.
Verse 12 (garuda.1.14.12)
iti dhyānaṁ samākhyātaṁ tava śaṅkara suvrata paṭhedya etatsatataṁ viṣṇulokaṁ sa gacchati
O Shankara, O one of good vows, thus has this meditation been declared to you. Whoever recites this constantly goes to the world of Vishnu.
