The Vishnu-Panjara Hymn

Verse 1 (garuda.1.13.1)

।।हरिरुवाच । प्रवक्ष्याम्यधुना ह्येतद्वैष्णवं पंजरं शुभम् । नमो नमस्ते गोविदं चक्रं गृह्य सुदर्शनम्

hariruvāca pravakṣyāmyadhunā hyetadvaiṣṇavaṁ paṁjaraṁ śubham namo namaste govidaṁ cakraṁ gṛhya sudarśanam

Hari said: Now I shall declare this auspicious Vaishnava armor (panjara). Salutation, salutation to you, O Govinda. Taking up the discus Sudarshana,

Verse 2 (garuda.1.13.2)

प्राच्यां रक्षस्व मां विष्णो ! त्वामहं शरणं गतः । गदां कौमोदकीं गृह्ण पद्मनाभ नमोऽस्त ते

prācyāṁ rakṣasva māṁ viṣṇo ! tvāmahaṁ śaraṇaṁ gataḥ gadāṁ kaumodakīṁ gṛhṇa padmanābha namo'sta te

O Vishnu, protect me in the east; I have come to you for refuge. Taking up the mace Kaumodaki, O Padmanabha, salutation to you.

Verse 3 (garuda.1.13.3)

याम्यां रक्षस्व मां विष्णो ! त्वामहं शरणं गतः । हलमादाय सौनन्दे नमस्ते पुरुषोत्तम

yāmyāṁ rakṣasva māṁ viṣṇo ! tvāmahaṁ śaraṇaṁ gataḥ halamādāya saunande namaste puruṣottama

O Vishnu, protect me in the south; I have come to you for refuge. Taking up the plough Saunanda, O Purushottama, salutation to you.

Verse 4 (garuda.1.13.4)

प्रतीच्यां रक्ष मां विष्णो ! त्वामहं शरणं गतः । मुसलं शातनं गृह्य पुण्डरीकाक्ष रक्ष माम्

pratīcyāṁ rakṣa māṁ viṣṇo ! tvāmahaṁ śaraṇaṁ gataḥ musalaṁ śātanaṁ gṛhya puṇḍarīkākṣa rakṣa mām

O Vishnu, protect me in the west; I have come to you for refuge. Taking up the pestle called Shatana, O lotus-eyed one, protect me.

Verse 5 (garuda.1.13.5)

उत्तरस्यां जगन्नाथ ! भवन्तं शरणं गतः । खड्गमादाय चर्म्माथ अस्त्रशास्त्रादिकं हरे !

uttarasyāṁ jagannātha ! bhavantaṁ śaraṇaṁ gataḥ khaḍgamādāya carmmātha astraśāstrādikaṁ hare !

O Lord of the universe, in the north I have come to your refuge. Taking up the sword and shield, and the other weapons besides, O Hari,

Verse 6 (garuda.1.13.6)

नमस्ते रक्ष रक्षोघ्न ! ऐशान्यां शरणं गतः । पांचजन्यं महाशंखमनुघोष्यं च पंकजम्

namaste rakṣa rakṣoghna ! aiśānyāṁ śaraṇaṁ gataḥ pāṁcajanyaṁ mahāśaṁkhamanughoṣyaṁ ca paṁkajam

salutation to you — O destroyer of rakshasas, protect me; in the north-east I have come to your refuge. Taking up the great resounding conch Panchajanya, and the lotus,

Verse 7 (garuda.1.13.7)

प्रगृह्य रक्ष मां विष्णो आग्न्येय्यां रक्ष शूकर । चन्द्रसूर्य्यं समागृह्य खड्गं चान्द्रमसं तथा

pragṛhya rakṣa māṁ viṣṇo āgnyeyyāṁ rakṣa śūkara candrasūryyaṁ samāgṛhya khaḍgaṁ cāndramasaṁ tathā

O Vishnu, protect me. In the south-east, O Boar, protect me. Taking up the moon and sun, and also the sword bright as the moon,

Verse 8 (garuda.1.13.8)

नैर्ऋत्यां मां च रक्षस्व दिव्यमूर्त्ते नृकेशरिन् । वैजयन्तीं स्मप्रगृह्य श्रीवत्सं कण्ठभूषणम्

nairṛtyāṁ māṁ ca rakṣasva divyamūrtte nṛkeśarin vaijayantīṁ smapragṛhya śrīvatsaṁ kaṇṭhabhūṣaṇam

In the south-west, O divinely formed Man-lion, protect me. Taking up the Vaijayanti garland, and Shrivatsa, the ornament of the breast,

Verse 9 (garuda.1.13.9)

वायव्यां रक्ष मां देव हयग्रीव नमोऽस्तु ते । वैनतेयं समारुह्य त्वंतरिक्षे जनार्दन !

vāyavyāṁ rakṣa māṁ deva hayagrīva namo'stu te vainateyaṁ samāruhya tvaṁtarikṣe janārdana !

In the north-west, protect me, O God Hayagriva; salutation be to you. Mounted upon Vainateya (Garuda), O Janardana, protect me in the sky.

Verse 10 (garuda.1.13.10)

मां रक्षस्वाजित सदा नमस्तेऽस्त्वपराजित । विशालाक्षं समारुह्य रक्ष मां त्वं रसातले

māṁ rakṣasvājita sadā namaste'stvaparājita viśālākṣaṁ samāruhya rakṣa māṁ tvaṁ rasātale

O unconquered one, ever protect me; salutation be to you, O invincible one. Mounted upon Vishalaksha (the tortoise), protect me in the netherworld.

Verse 11 (garuda.1.13.11)

अकूपार नमस्तुभ्यं महामीन नमोऽस्तु ते । करशीर्षाद्यंगुलेषु सत्य त्वं बाहुपंजरम्

akūpāra namastubhyaṁ mahāmīna namo'stu te karaśīrṣādyaṁguleṣu satya tvaṁ bāhupaṁjaram

O Akupara, salutation to you; O great fish, salutation be to you. O truth incarnate, in the hands, the head, and the fingers, you yourself are the armor of the arms.

Verse 12 (garuda.1.13.12)

कृत्वा रक्षस्व मां विष्णो नमस्ते पुरुषोत्तम । एतदुक्तं शंकराय वैष्णवं पंजरं महत्

kṛtvā rakṣasva māṁ viṣṇo namaste puruṣottama etaduktaṁ śaṁkarāya vaiṣṇavaṁ paṁjaraṁ mahat

Having thus formed this armor, O Vishnu, protect me; salutation to you, O Purushottama. This great Vaishnava armor was declared to Shankara,

Verse 13 (garuda.1.13.13)

पुरा रक्षार्थमीशान्याः कात्यायन्या वृषध्वज । नाशायामास सा येन चामरान्महिषासुरम्

purā rakṣārthamīśānyāḥ kātyāyanyā vṛṣadhvaja nāśāyāmāsa sā yena cāmarānmahiṣāsuram

long ago, O bearer of the bull-banner, for the protection of Ishana's consort Katyayani. By its aid, together with the immortal gods, she destroyed the buffalo-demon Mahishasura,

Verse 14 (garuda.1.13.14)

दानवं रक्तबीजं च अन्याँश्च सुरकण्टकान् । एतज्जपन्नरो भक्त्या शत्रून्विजयते सदा

dānavaṁ raktabījaṁ ca anyā̃śca surakaṇṭakān etajjapannaro bhaktyā śatrūnvijayate sadā

and the demon Raktabija, and other thorns in the side of the gods. Whoever recites this with devotion ever triumphs over his enemies.
