The Sequence of Worship

Chapter 11All chaptersChapter 13

Verse 1 (garuda.1.12.1)

hariruvāca pūjānukramasiddhyarthaṁ pūjānukrama ucyate oṁ nama ityādau saṁsmṛtiḥ paramātmanaḥ

Hari said: For the successful accomplishment of worship, the sequence of worship is now declared. At the outset, with "Om, salutation," one should call to mind the Supreme Self.

Verse 2 (garuda.1.12.2)

yaṁ raṁ vaṁ lamiti kāyaśuddhiḥ oṁ nama iti caturbhujātmanirmāṇam

"Yaṁ, raṁ, vaṁ, laṁ" — thus one purifies the body. "Om, salutation" — thus one visualizes the fashioning of oneself into the four-armed form.

Verse 3 (garuda.1.12.3)

Then one should perform the threefold placement upon hands and body, and then worship the yoga-seat abiding in the heart: Om, salutation to Ananta. Om, to Dharma. Om, to Knowledge. Om, to Dispassion. Om, to Lordship. Om, to Non-dharma. Om, to Ignorance. Om, to Non-dispassion. Om, to Powerlessness. Om, to the Lotus. Om, to the disc of the Sun. Om, to the disc of the Moon. Om, to the disc of Fire. Om, to Vimala. Om, to Utkarshini. Om, to the power of Knowledge. Om, to Action. Om, to Yoga. Om, to Prahvi. Om, to Truth. Om, to Ishana. Om, to the All-Facing One. Om, to Hari's seat with its limbs and sub-limbs. Then, in the pericarp: aṁ, salutation to Vasudeva; āṁ, to the heart; īṁ, to the head; ūṁ, to the crest; aiṁ, to the armor; auṁ, to the three eyes; aḥ phaṭ, to the weapon; āṁ, to Sankarshana; aṁ, to Pradyumna; aḥ, to Aniruddha; om aḥ, to Narayana; om, to that Brahman; om huṁ, to Vishnu. Then: kṣauṁ to Narasimha, bhūḥ to Varaha, kaṁ to Vainateya (Garuda), jaṁ khaṁ vaṁ to Sudarshana, khaṁ caṁ phaṁ ṣaṁ to the mace, vaṁ laṁ maṁ kṣaṁ to the conch Panchajanya, ghaṁ ḍhaṁ bhaṁ haṁ to Shri, gaṁ ḍaṁ vaṁ śaṁ to Pushti, dhaṁ vaṁ to the forest-garland, daṁ śaṁ to Shrivatsa, chaṁ ḍaṁ yaṁ to Kaustubha, śaṁ to the bow Sharnga, iṁ to the quiver, caṁ to the shield, khaṁ to the sword, then to Indra, to the Sun, to Agni lord of radiance, to Yama lord of dharma, to Nairrita lord of protection, to Varuna lord of waters, yoṁ to Vayu lord of breath, dhāṁ to Kubera lord of wealth, hāṁ to Ishana lord of knowledge; om, to the thunderbolt and the spear; om, to the staff and the sword; om, to the noose, banner, mace and trident; laṁ to Ananta lord of the netherworld; khaṁ to Brahma, lord of all worlds — "Om, salutation to the Lord Vasudeva." Thereafter a string of seed-syllables is recited, ending with: Om, salutation to Purushottama.

Verse 4 (garuda.1.12.4)

namaste puṇḍarīkākṣa namaste viśvabhāvana subrahmaṇya namaste'stu mahāpuruṣa pūrvaja

Salutation to you, O lotus-eyed one; salutation to you, O creator of the universe. Salutation be to you, O Subrahmanya, O great Person, O primeval one.

Verse 5 (garuda.1.12.5)

homakarmaṇi caiteṣāṁ svāhāntamupakalpayet evaṁ japtvā vidhānena śatamaṣṭottaraṁ tathā

In the fire-offering rite, one should append "svaha" to the end of all these mantras. Having thus recited them one hundred and eight times, according to rule,

Verse 6 (garuda.1.12.6)

arghaṁ dattvā jitaṁ tena praṇāmaṁ ca punaḥ punaḥ tato'gnāvapi sampūjyaṁ taṁ yajeta yathāvidhi

having offered arghya, and having thereby attained mastery, one should bow again and again. Then, in the fire also, one should duly worship that adorable God.

Verse 7 (garuda.1.12.7)

devadevaṁ svabījena aṁgādibhirathācyutam pūrvamullikhya cābhyukṣya praṇavena tu mantravit

The knower of mantras should first, with his own seed-mantra and together with the limb-mantras, trace out the God of gods, Achyuta, in the fire-pit, and sprinkle it with water using the syllable Om.

Verse 8 (garuda.1.12.8)

bhrāmayitvānalaṁ kuṁḍe pūjayecca śubhaiḥ phalaiḥ pūrvaṁ tatsakalaṁ dhyātvā maṇḍale manasā nyaset

Having kindled the fire in the pit, one should worship it with auspicious offerings. Having first meditated upon that entire deity, one should mentally place him in the mandala.

Verse 9 (garuda.1.12.9)

vāsudevākhyatattvena hutvā cāṣṭottaraṁ śatam saṁkarṣaṇādibījena yajetṣaṭkaṁ tathaiva ca

Having offered one hundred and eight oblations with the principle called Vasudeva, one should likewise perform the offering of six oblations with the seed-mantras of Sankarshana and the rest.

Verse 10 (garuda.1.12.10)

trayaṁ trayaṁ tathāṁgānāmekaikāndikpatīṁstathā pūrṇāhutiṁ tathaivāṁte dadyātsamyagupasthitaḥ

For each of the limb-deities, three oblations each; and for each of the guardians of the quarters, one each. At the end, being properly present, one should likewise offer the final, complete oblation.

Verse 11 (garuda.1.12.11)

vāgatīte pare tattve ātmānaṁ ca layaṁ nayet upaviśya punarmudrāṁ darśayitvā nametpunaḥ

One should merge one's own self into that supreme principle, beyond the reach of speech. Sitting down again, having shown the mudra once more, one should again bow.

Verse 12 (garuda.1.12.12)

nityamevaṁvidhaṁ homaṁ naimittaṁ dviguṇaṁ bhavet gacchagaccha paraṁ sthānaṁ yatra devo nirañjanaḥ

The daily fire-offering should be performed thus, and the occasional (special) offering should be doubled. "Go, go, to that supreme abode where the stainless God dwells."

Verse 13 (garuda.1.12.13)

gacchantu devatāḥ sarvāḥ svasthānasthitihetave sudarśanaḥ śrīhariśca acyutaḥ sa trivikramaḥ

Let all the deities depart to abide in their own places. Sudarshana, Shri Hari, Achyuta, Trivikrama,

Verse 14 (garuda.1.12.14)

caturbhujo vāsudevaḥ ṣaṣṭhaḥ pradyumna eva ca saṁkarṣaṇaḥ puruṣo'tha navavyūho daśātmakaḥ

the four-armed Vasudeva, sixth Pradyumna, Sankarshana, and Purusha — thus the nine-fold emanation has ten forms.

Verse 15 (garuda.1.12.15)

aniruddho dvādaśātmā atha ūrddhamanantakaḥ ete ekādibhiścakrairvijñeyā lakṣitāḥ surāḥ

Aniruddha is the twelfth form, and above is Ananta. These deities should be known, marked by discs numbered one and upward.

Verse 16 (garuda.1.12.16)

cakrāṁkitaiḥ pūjitaḥ syāndrṛhe rakṣetsadānavaiḥ oṁ cakrāya svāhā, oṁ vicakrāya svāhā, oṁ sucakrāya svāhā, oṁ mahācakrāya svāhā, oṁ mahācakrāya asurāntakṛt huṁ phaṭ oṁ huṁ sahastrāra huṁ phaṭ

Worshipped with objects marked by the discus, may that God ever protect the house from the danavas. "Om, salutation to the Discus. Om, salutation to the Multiple-Discus. Om, salutation to the Radiant Discus. Om, salutation to the Great Discus. Om, O Great Discus, slayer of demons, hum phat. Om hum, O thousand-spoked one, hum phat."

Verse 17 (garuda.1.12.17)

dvārakācakrapūjeyaṁ gṛhe rakṣākarī śubhā

This worship of the Dvaraka-discus is protective and auspicious within the home.
