Purvakhanda — Acharakanda · Chapter 11
Worship of the Nine Emanations
Verse 1 (garuda.1.11.1)
hariruvāca navavyūhārcanaṁ vakṣye yaduktaṁ kaśyapāya hi jīvamutkṣipya mūrddhanyāṁ nābhyāṁ vyomniniveśayet
Hari said: I shall declare the worship of the nine emanations, as it was told to Kashyapa. Having drawn the individual soul upward, through the crown, one should establish it in the ether by way of the navel-channel.
Verse 2 (garuda.1.11.2)
tatoramiti bījena dahedbhūtātmakaṁ vapuḥ yamityanena bījena tacca sarva vināśayet
Then, with the seed-syllable "raṁ," one should burn the body composed of the elements. With the seed-syllable "yaṁ," one should destroy all of that.
Verse 3 (garuda.1.11.3)
lamityanena bījena plāvayetsacarācaram vamityanena bījena cintayedamṛtaṁ tataḥ
With the seed-syllable "laṁ," one should flood away all that moves and does not move. Then, with the seed-syllable "vaṁ," one should meditate upon nectar.
Verse 4 (garuda.1.11.4)
tato budvudamadhye tu pītavāsāścaturbhujaḥ ahaṁ matastathātmānaṁ dhyānena paricintayet
Then, within that bubble, in the form of the four-armed Lord clad in yellow — thinking "I myself am he" — one should contemplate one's own self through meditation.
Verse 5 (garuda.1.11.5)
mantranyāsaṁ tataḥ kuryāttrividhaṁ karadehayoḥ dvādaśākṣarabījena uktabījairanantaram
Then one should perform the threefold ritual placement of mantras upon the hands and the body — with the twelve-syllabled mantra, and thereafter with the aforementioned seed-syllables.
Verse 6 (garuda.1.11.6)
ṣaḍaṅgena tataḥ kuryyātsākṣādyena harirbhavet dakṣiṇāṅguṣṭhamārabhya madhyāṅguṣṭhaṁdale nyaset
Then one should perform the six-limb placement, by which the practitioner becomes Hari himself. Beginning from the right thumb, one should place the mantras at the region of the middle finger and thumb.
Verse 7 (garuda.1.11.7)
madhye bījadvayaṁ nyasya nyasedaṅge tataḥ punaḥ hṛcchirasi śikhāvarmmavakkrākṣyudahapṛṣṭhataḥ
Having placed two seed-syllables in the middle, one should then again place mantras upon the limbs — upon the heart, head, crest, armor, face, eyes, belly, and back.
Verse 8 (garuda.1.11.8)
bāhvośca karayorjānvoḥ pādayoścāpi vinyaset padmākārau karau kṛtvā madhye'ṅguṣṭhaṁ niveśayet
One should also perform the placement upon both arms, hands, knees, and feet. Having formed both hands in the shape of a lotus, one should place the thumb in the middle.
Verse 9 (garuda.1.11.9)
cintayettatra sarveśaṁ paraṁ tattvamanāmayam kramāccaitāni bījāni tarjanyādiṣu vinya set
There one should meditate upon the Lord of all, the supreme, flawless principle. These seed-syllables should be placed in order upon the index finger and the other fingers.
Verse 10 (garuda.1.11.10)
tato mūrddhākṣivakkreṣu kaṇṭhe ca hṛdaye tathā nābhau guhye tathā jānvoḥ pādayorvinyasetkramāt
Then, on the head, eyes, mouth, throat and heart, and then on the navel, the secret place, the knees and feet, one should perform the placement in order.
Verse 11 (garuda.1.11.11)
pāṇyoḥ ṣaḍaṅgabījāni nyasya kāye tato nyaset aṅguṣṭhādikaniṣṭhāntaṁ vinyasedvījapañcakam
Having placed the six-limb seed-syllables on both hands, one should then place them on the body. From the thumb to the little finger, one should place the group of five seed-syllables.
Verse 12 (garuda.1.11.12)
karamadhye netrabījamaṅganyāsa'pyayaṁ kramaḥ hṛdaye hṛdayaṁ nyasya śiraḥ śirasi vinyaset
In the middle of the hand, the eye-seed should be placed; this is also the order for the limb-placement. Having placed the "heart" mantra on the heart, one should place the "head" mantra on the head.
Verse 13 (garuda.1.11.13)
śikhāyāṁ tu śikhāṁ nyasya kavacaṁ sarvatastanau netraṁ netre vidhātavyamastrañca karayordvayoḥ
Having placed the "crest" mantra on the crest, one should place the "armor" mantra all over the body. The "eye" mantra should be placed on the eyes, and the "weapon" mantra on both hands.
Verse 14 (garuda.1.11.14)
tenaiva ca diśo baddhā pūjā vidhimathācaret hṛdaye cintayetpūrvaṁ yogapīṭhaṁ samāhitaḥ
With that same mantra one should bind the quarters, and then perform the rite of worship. With focused mind, one should first meditate, in the heart, upon the yoga-seat.
Verse 15 (garuda.1.11.15)
dharma jñanaṁ ca vairāgyamaiśvaryaṁ ca yathākramam āgneyādau ca pūrvādāvadharmādīṁśca vinyaset
Dharma, knowledge, dispassion, and lordship, in due order, in the south-east and the other corners; and in the east and the other quarters, one should place non-dharma and the rest.
Verse 16 (garuda.1.11.16)
ebhiḥ paricchannatanuṁ pīṭhabhūtaṁ tadātmakam anantaṁ vinyasetpaścātpūrvakāyonnataṁ sthitam
Surrounded by these, one should then place Ananta (Shesha), of that same nature, forming the seat, whose fore-body stands raised aloft.
Verse 17 (garuda.1.11.17)
tato vidyātsarojātaṁ dalāṣṭasamadigdalam sitābjaṁ śatapatrāḍhyaṁ viprakīrṇorddhakarṇikam
Then one should know the lotus, of eight petals, spreading evenly in the directions. That white lotus should be endowed with a hundred petals, its pericarp spreading upward.
Verse 18 (garuda.1.11.18)
dhyātvā vedādinā paścātsūryyasomānalātmanām maṇḍalāni kramādevamuparyyupari cintayet
Having meditated upon it by the count "Veda" and the rest, one should then contemplate, one above another in order, the discs of the nature of sun, moon, and fire.
Verse 19 (garuda.1.11.19)
tataḥ pūrvādidiksaṁsthāḥ śaktīḥ keśavagocarāḥ vimalādyā nyasedaṣṭau navamīṁ karṇikāgatām
Then, in the east and the other quarters, one should place the eight powers beginning with Vimala, belonging to Keshava; and the ninth power should be placed in the pericarp.
Verse 20 (garuda.1.11.20)
evaṁ dhyātvā samabhyarcya yogapīṭhamanantaram manasāvāhya tatreśaṁ hariṁ śārṅgaṁ nyasetpunaḥ
Having thus meditated, and duly worshipped the yoga-seat, having invoked the Lord Hari there in the mind, one should again place the bow-bearing Hari.
Verse 21 (garuda.1.11.21)
hṛdayādīni pūrvādicaturdigdalayogataḥ madhye netraṁ tu koṇeṣu astramantraṁ nyasettataḥ
The "heart" and the other limb-mantras should be placed upon the petals in the four quarters, east and the rest. In the middle, the "eye" mantra; and in the corners, one should place the weapon-mantra.
Verse 22 (garuda.1.11.22)
saṅkarṣaṇādibījāni pūrvādikramayogataḥ dvāri pūrve pare caiva vainateyaṁ tu vinyaset
The seed-syllables of Sankarshana and the others should be placed in order beginning with the east. At the eastern gateway, and beyond it too, one should place Vainateya (Garuda).
Verse 23 (garuda.1.11.23)
sudarśanaṁ sahastrāraṁ dakṣiṇe dvāri vinyaset śriyaṁ dakṣiṇato nyasya lakṣmīmuttaratastathā
The thousand-spoked Sudarshana should be placed at the southern gateway. Having placed Shri to the south, one should likewise place Lakshmi to the north.
Verse 24 (garuda.1.11.24)
dvāryyattare gadāṁ nyasya śaṅkhaṁ koṇeṣu vinyaset devadakṣiṇataḥ śārṅgaṁ vāme caiva sudhīrnyaset
Having placed the mace at the northern gateway, one should place the conch in the corners. The wise one should place the bow Sharnga to the right of the God, and another weapon to the left.
Verse 25 (garuda.1.11.25)
tadvatkhaṅgaṁ tathā cakraṁ nyasetpārśvadvayordvayam tato'ntarlokapālāṁśca svadigbhedena vinyaset
Likewise, one should place the sword and the discus on the two flanks. Then, within, one should place the guardians of the quarters, each in his own direction.
Verse 26 (garuda.1.11.26)
vajrādīnyāyudhānyeva tathaiva viniveśayet ūrghvaṁ brahma tathānantamadhaśca paricintayet
In the same way one should also place the thunderbolt and the other weapons. Above, one should contemplate Brahma, and below, Ananta.
Verse 27 (garuda.1.11.27)
sarvaṁ dhyātveti saṁpūjya mudrāḥ sandarśayettataḥ añjaliḥ prathamā mudrā kṣipraṁ devaprasādhanī
Having thus meditated upon all and duly worshipped, one should then display the hand-gestures. The joined-palms gesture is the first mudra, which swiftly pleases the deity.
Verse 28 (garuda.1.11.28)
vandanī hṛdayāsaktātsārddhaṁ dakṣiṇatonnatā ūrddhāṅguṣṭho vāmamuṣṭirdakṣiṇāṁguṣṭhabandhanaḥ
The salutation gesture is held close to the heart, raised somewhat to the right. The thumb upright, the left fist bound by the right thumb.
Verse 29 (garuda.1.11.29)
savyasya tasya cāṁguṣṭho yaḥ sa uddhrvaḥ prakīrttitaḥ tistraḥ sādhāraṇā hyetā mūrttibhedena kalpitāḥ
And whichever is the left thumb of that fist is declared to be "upright." These three common mudras are devised according to the distinction of the images.
Verse 30 (garuda.1.11.30)
kaniṣṭhādiprayogeṇa aṣṭau mudrā yathākramam aṣṭānāṁ pūrvabījānāṁ kramaśastvavadhārayet
By the use of the little finger and the others, eight mudras are formed in order. One should determine, in due order, the eight previously mentioned seed-syllables.
Verse 31 (garuda.1.11.31)
aṁguṣṭhena kaniṣṭhāntaṁ nāmayitvāṁgulitrayam mudreyaṁ narasiṁhasya nyubjaṁ kṛtvā karadvayam
By bending, with the thumb, the three fingers up to the little finger, this mudra is formed — it is the mudra of Narasimha. Having turned both hands face down,
Verse 32 (garuda.1.11.32)
savyahastaṁ tathottānaṁ kṛtvorddhaṁ bhrāmayecchanaiḥ navamīyaṁ smṛtā mudrā varāhābhimatā sadā
and turning the left hand upward, one should slowly rotate it upward. This is remembered as the ninth mudra, ever dear to Varaha.
Verse 33 (garuda.1.11.33)
muṣṭidvayamathottānamṛjvekaikena mocayet utkuñcaye tsarvamuktā aṁgamudreyamucyate
Having opened both fists straight, one should release them one by one. Having released all and then curled them in — this is called the limb-mudra.
Verse 34 (garuda.1.11.34)
muṣṭidvayamatho baddhā evamevānupūrvaśaḥ daśānāṁ lokapālānāṁ mudrāśca kramayogataḥ
Then, binding both fists, in this same sequence, one after another the mudras are formed. The mudras of the ten guardians of the quarters likewise follow in order.
Verse 35 (garuda.1.11.35)
svaramādyaṁ dvitīyaṁ ca upāntyañcāntyameva ca vāsudevo balaḥ kāmo hyaniruddho yathākramam
The first vowel, the second, the penultimate, and the last — these, in order, signify Vasudeva, Bala (Sankarshana), Kama (Pradyumna), and Aniruddha.
Verse 36 (garuda.1.11.36)
praṇavastatsadityetad huṁ kṣauṁ bhūriti mantrakāḥ nārāyaṇastathā brahmā viṣṇuḥ siṁho varāharāṭ
Om, "tat sat," "huṁ," "kṣauṁ," "bhūḥ" — these are the mantras belonging, in order, to Narayana, Brahma, Vishnu, Narasimha, and the king of boars, Varaha.
Verse 37 (garuda.1.11.37)
sitāruṇaharidrābhā nīlaśyāmallohitāḥ meghāgnimadhupiṁgābhā varṇato navanāmakāḥ
White, ruddy, turmeric-yellow, blue, dark, red, cloud-colored, fire-colored, and tawny like honey — by color, these are their nine respective hues.
Verse 38 (garuda.1.11.38)
kaṁ ṭaṁ paṁ śaṁ garutmānsyājjaṁ khaṁ vaṁ ca sudarśanam ṣaṁ caṁ phaṁ ṣaṁ gadādevī vaṁ laṁ maṁ kṣaṁ ca śaṁkhakam
Kaṁ, ṭaṁ, paṁ, śaṁ — this is the mantra of Garutman (Garuda). Jaṁ, khaṁ, vaṁ — this is of Sudarshana. Ṣaṁ, caṁ, phaṁ, ṣaṁ — this is of the mace-goddess. Vaṁ, laṁ, maṁ, kṣaṁ — this is the mantra of the conch.
Verse 39 (garuda.1.11.39)
ghã ḍhã bhã ṅã bhavecchrīśca gaṁ jaṁ vaṁ śaṁ ca puṣṭikā ghaṁ vaṁ ca vanamālā syācchrī vatsaṁ daṁ saṁ bhavet
Ghaṁ, ḍhaṁ, bhaṁ, haṁ — this is the mantra of Shri. Gaṁ, ḍaṁ, vaṁ, saṁ — this is of Pushti. Ghaṁ, vaṁ — this is of the forest-garland. The mantra of Shrivatsa is daṁ, saṁ.
Verse 40 (garuda.1.11.40)
chaṁ ḍaṁ paṁ yaṁ kaustubhaḥ proktaścānanto hyahameva ca ityaṁgāniyathāyogaṁ devadevasya vai daśā
Chaṁ, ḍaṁ, paṁ, yaṁ — this is declared for the Kaustubha jewel, and Ananta's mantra too is simply "aham" (I am). Thus, in due proportion, the ten attendant emblems of the God of gods should be known.
Verse 41 (garuda.1.11.41)
garuḍo'mbujasaṁkāśo gadā caivāsitākṛtiḥ puṣṭiḥ śirīṣapuṣpābhā lakṣmīḥ kāñcanasannibhā
Garuda is the color of the lotus, and the mace is of dark form. Pushti has the hue of the shirisha flower, and Lakshmi resembles gold.
Verse 42 (garuda.1.11.42)
pūrṇacandranibhaḥ śaṁkhaḥ kaustubhastvaruṇadyutiḥ cakraṁ sūryyasahastrābhaṁ śrīvatsaḥ kundasannibhaḥ
The conch resembles the full moon, and Kaustubha has a ruddy radiance. The discus shines like a thousand suns, and Shrivatsa is white as the kunda flower.
Verse 43 (garuda.1.11.43)
pañcavarṇanibhā mālā hyananto meghasannibhaḥ vidyudrūpāṇi cāstrāṇi yāni noktāni varṇataḥ
The garland resembles the five colors, and Ananta is dark as a cloud in hue. Lightning-formed are the weapons whose colors have not been separately declared.
Verse 44 (garuda.1.11.44)
arghyapādyādi vai dadyātpuṇḍarīkākṣavidyayā
With the mantra-lore of Pundarikaksha, the lotus-eyed Vishnu, one should offer the arghya, padya, and the rest.
