Vaishvadeva: The Rule of the Fire-Offering

Verse 1 (garuda.1.216.1)

ब्रह्मोवाच । वैश्वदेवं प्रवक्ष्यामि होमलक्षणमुत्तमम् । प्रज्वाल्य चाग्निं पर्युक्ष्यओं क्रष्यादमग्निं प्रहिणोमि दूरं यमराज्यं गच्छतु रिप्रवाहः । इहैवायमितरो जातवेदा देवेभ्यो हव्यं वहतु प्रजानत् । ओं पावक वैश्वानर इदमासनं अरणीगर्भसंस्कृततेजोरूप महाब्रह्मन्मुहूर्तास्त्रिषु वैश्वानरं प्रतिबोधयामि । ओं वैश्वानरे न उभयं आप्रयातु परावतः अग्निर्न स्वद्युतीरूपपृष्ठो दिवि पृष्ठोऽश्वि पृथिव्यां पृष्ठा विवेवा ओषधीचाविवेश वैश्वानरः सहसा पृष्ठोऽग्निः नमो दिव्य स षष्ठां नक्तम्

brahmovāca vaiśvadevaṁ pravakṣyāmi homalakṣaṇamuttamam prajvālya cāgniṁ paryukṣyaoṁ kraṣyādamagniṁ prahiṇomi dūraṁ yamarājyaṁ gacchatu ripravāhaḥ ihaivāyamitaro jātavedā devebhyo havyaṁ vahatu prajānat oṁ pāvaka vaiśvānara idamāsanaṁ araṇīgarbhasaṁskṛtatejorūpa mahābrahmanmuhūrtāstriṣu vaiśvānaraṁ pratibodhayāmi oṁ vaiśvānare na ubhayaṁ āprayātu parāvataḥ agnirna svadyutīrūpapṛṣṭho divi pṛṣṭho'śvi pṛthivyāṁ pṛṣṭhā vivevā oṣadhīcāviveśa vaiśvānaraḥ sahasā pṛṣṭho'gniḥ namo divya sa ṣaṣṭhāṁ naktam

Brahma said: Now I shall declare the excellent fire-offering rite called Vaishvadeva. Having kindled the fire and sprinkled water, one recites: 'I send this sin-bearing fire far away to the realm of Yama; may this same fire, the knower of all beings, here itself carry the oblation to the gods.' 'O purifying Vaishvanara, this seat is the great splendor born from the womb of the fire-sticks; in the three watches I awaken Vaishvanara' — and further verses on Vaishvanara's glory are recited, declaring the fire to pervade the sky, the earth, and the plants.

Verse 2 (garuda.1.216.2)

ओं प्रजापतये स्वाहा । ओं सोमाय स्वाहा । ओं बृहस्पतये स्वाहा । ओं अग्निषोमाभ्यां स्वाहा । ओं इन्द्राग्निभ्यां स्वाहा । ओं द्यावापृथिवीभ्यां स्वाहा । ओं इन्द्राय स्वाहा । ओं विश्वेभ्यो देवेभ्यः स्वाहा । ओं ब्रह्मणे स्वाहा । ओं अद्भ्यः स्वाहा । ओं ओषधिवनस्पतिभ्यः स्वाहा । ओं ग्रह्याय स्वाहा । ओं देवदेवताभ्यः स्वाहा । ओं इन्द्राय स्वाहा । ओं इन्द्रपुरुषेभ्यः स्वाहा । ओं यमाय स्वाहा । ओं यमपुरुषाय स्वाहा । ओं सर्वेभ्यो भूतेभ्यो दिवाचारिभ्यः स्वाहा । ओं वसुधापितृभ्यः स्वाहा । ओं ये भूता प्रचरन्ति दीनाच निमिहन्तो भुवनस्य मध्ये । तेभ्यो बलिं पुष्टिकामो ददामि मयि पुष्टिं पुष्टिपतिर्ददातु । ओं आचाण्डालपतिर्ददातु आचाण्डालपतितवायसेभ्यः

oṁ prajāpataye svāhā oṁ somāya svāhā oṁ bṛhaspataye svāhā oṁ agniṣomābhyāṁ svāhā oṁ indrāgnibhyāṁ svāhā oṁ dyāvāpṛthivībhyāṁ svāhā oṁ indrāya svāhā oṁ viśvebhyo devebhyaḥ svāhā oṁ brahmaṇe svāhā oṁ adbhyaḥ svāhā oṁ oṣadhivanaspatibhyaḥ svāhā oṁ grahyāya svāhā oṁ devadevatābhyaḥ svāhā oṁ indrāya svāhā oṁ indrapuruṣebhyaḥ svāhā oṁ yamāya svāhā oṁ yamapuruṣāya svāhā oṁ sarvebhyo bhūtebhyo divācāribhyaḥ svāhā oṁ vasudhāpitṛbhyaḥ svāhā oṁ ye bhūtā pracaranti dīnāca nimihanto bhuvanasya madhye tebhyo baliṁ puṣṭikāmo dadāmi mayi puṣṭiṁ puṣṭipatirdadātu oṁ ācāṇḍālapatirdadātu ācāṇḍālapatitavāyasebhyaḥ

Om, oblation (svaha) to Prajapati, to Soma, to Brihaspati, to Agni-Soma, to Indra-Agni, to Heaven-and-Earth, to Indra, to the Vishvedevas, to Brahma, to the Waters, to the plants and herbs, to Grahya, to the gods, to Indra, to Indra's attendants, to Yama, to Yama's attendant, to all spirits that roam by day, to the ancestors of the earth — thus the oblations are offered. 'To those spirit-hosts who wander in distress amid the world, I offer this bali, desiring nourishment; may the Lord of Nourishment grant me nourishment' — and offerings are likewise given to the lord of outcastes and to the crows and such.
