The Rite of Parvana-Shraddha (The Ancestor-Offering)

Chapter 217All chaptersChapter 219

Verse 1 (garuda.1.218.1)

brahmovāca vyāsa ! śrāddhamahaṁ vakṣye bhuktimuktipradaṁ nṛṇām pūrvaṁ nimantrayedviprānviśeṣādbrahmacāriṇaḥ

Brahma said: O Vyasa, I shall now describe the Shraddha rite, which grants both worldly enjoyment and liberation to men. First one should invite brahmins, especially celibate students.

Verse 2 (garuda.1.218.2)

pradakṣiṇopavītena devānvāmopavītinā pitṝnnimantrayetpādau kṣālayedvākyamantrataḥ

With the sacred thread over the right shoulder one should invite the gods, and over the left shoulder the ancestors; their feet should be washed while reciting the prescribed formulas.

Verse 3 (garuda.1.218.3)

oṁ svāgataṁ bhavadbhiriti praśraḥ oṁ susvāgatāmiti tairukte oṁ viśvebhyo devebhya etatpādodakamarghyaṁ svāheti devabrāhmaṇapādayordevatīrthenābhugnakuśasahitajaladānam

One offers the greeting 'welcome to you,' and when they reply 'well welcomed,' one recites 'Om, to the Vishvadevas this water for the feet is an offering, svaha,' offering water together with bent kusha grass at the feet of the gods and their brahmin, using the deva-tirtha of the fingertips.

Verse 4 (garuda.1.218.4)

Then, facing south, with the thread over the left shoulder, one recites 'to our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather of such-and-such gotra, by their names, this water for the feet is an offering, svadha,' giving water with bent kusha and flowers at the feet of the ancestor-representing brahmins, using the pitri-tirtha.

Verse 5 (garuda.1.218.5)

evaṁ mātāmahādibhyaḥ etadācamanīyaṁ svāhā svadheti brāhmaṇahaste eṣavor'ghya iti brāhmaṇahaste puṣpadānam

The same should be done for the maternal grandfather and the rest. Saying 'this is for sipping, svaha, svadha,' one gives water into the brahmin's hand, and saying 'this is the arghya,' one gives flowers into his hand.

Verse 6 (garuda.1.218.6)

Saying 'this seat is perfected, here it is perfected,' with the seven vyahritis, one should seat the god-brahmin facing east, and the ancestor-brahmin facing north. One recites thrice: 'Om, salutation to the gods, the ancestors, and the great yogis; may svadha and svaha ever be with you.'

Verse 7 (garuda.1.218.7)

'Om, today in this place, in such-and-such month, with the sun in such-and-such sign, on such-and-such day, I shall perform the Vishvadeva-preceded Shraddha for our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather of such-and-such gotra, by their names. Om, oblation to the Vishvadevas — I shall invoke the Vishvadevas.' When told 'invoke them,' one recites: 'Om, Vishvadevas, come here, hear this call, sit upon this kusha grass; you who dwell in the atmosphere and in heaven, whose tongue is fire, worthy of sacrifice, come and rejoice upon this grass. The herbs converse with King Soma: whomever the brahmin serves, him, O King, we carry across. May the greatly fortunate, mighty Vishvadevas come; may those assigned to this Shraddha be attentive. May the asuras and rakshasas seated at the altar be driven away' — reciting this, one scatters barley thrice.

Verse 8 (garuda.1.218.8)

oṁ pātramahaṁ kariṣye oṁ karuṣvetyanujñātaḥ kṛtvā pātre pavitraniṣevaṇam

'Om, I shall prepare the vessel' — being told 'prepare it,' one places the purifying kusha grass within the vessel.

Verse 9 (garuda.1.218.9)

'Om, may the beneficent waters be for our happiness and drinking' — with this one gives water into the vessel. 'Om, you are barley — keep away hatred and enemies from us' — with this one offers barley. 'The fragrant, unassailable, ever-nourishing, dung-scented mistress of all beings, O Shri, I invoke you here' — with this one offers fragrance. 'Om, whatever divine waters arose with milk, whatever belong to the atmosphere and the earth, golden and worthy of sacrifice — may those waters be auspicious, peaceful, and gentle for us' — saying 'this is the arghya, salutation,' one gives water into the brahmin's hand, takes the purifying kusha with this same vessel, and places the overflow-water and kusha beside the brahmin. Then, having settled the remaining water in the first vessel, one sets it face-up upon kusha grass, and places kusha upon it.

Verse 10 (garuda.1.218.10)

viśvebhyo devebhyaḥ etāni gandhapuṣpadhūpadīpavāso yugayajño pavītāni namaḥ gandhādidānamacchidramastu astviti brāhmaṇaprativacanam

'To the Vishvadevas — this fragrance, flowers, incense, lamp, cloth, and sacred thread — salutation.' After the offering of fragrance and the rest, one says 'may it be without flaw'; 'so be it' is the brahmin's reply.

Verse 11 (garuda.1.218.11)

Then: 'I shall perform the Shraddha for my father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and for my maternal grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather, together with their wives' — this is the statement seeking permission. When the brahmins say 'perform it,' one recites thrice: 'Om, to the gods and the ancestors.'

Verse 12 (garuda.1.218.12)

'Om, to the ancestors of such-and-such gotra — my father and grandfather, by their names, together with their wives — this seat, svadha' — with this one gives a seat to the left of the brahmin. 'Om, I shall invoke the ancestors — Om' — being told 'invoke,' one recites: 'Longing, we place you; longing, we kindle you; longing, bring the ancestors here for the offering. May our gentle Agnishvatta fathers come by the paths the gods travel; rejoicing with svadha in this sacrifice, may they speak for us and protect us' — this is the invocation. 'Om, may the asuras and rakshasas seated at the altar be driven away' — with this one scatters sesame. One gives water into the vessels set as before. 'Om, you are sesame, sacred to Soma, born of the cow-rite, fashioned by the gods; blended of old with water, satisfy with svadha our ancestors in their worlds, svaha' — with this one offers sesame.

Verse 13 (garuda.1.218.13)

Having given fragrance and flowers with both hands, having lifted the ancestors' vessel, having recited 'ya divya,' one says: 'O my father of such-and-such gotra, named such-and-such deity-sharman, together with your wife — this is your arghya, svadha.' Taking the emptied vessel to the left, one places it inverted upon kusha to the right, saying 'Om, you are the abode of the ancestors.'

Verse 14 (garuda.1.218.14)

'Om, may the worlds, the abodes of the ancestors, be purified — you are the pitri-abode' — with this one touches the inverted vessel. 'To our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather of such-and-such gotra, together with their wives — this fragrance, flowers, incense, lamp, cloth, and sacred thread, svadha' — one offers these using the pitri-tirtha. 'May this offering be inexhaustible; may the resolve be accomplished' — this is the brahmin's utterance. The same rite of seeking permission is done for the maternal grandfather and the rest. Reciting 'ya divya,' one sweeps the ground. Then, taking ghee-anointed food, with the thread over the right shoulder, one says to the ancestor-brahmin: 'Om, I shall now offer into the fire.' Being told 'do so,' one says 'Om, oblation to Agni Kavyavahana,' offering two oblations into the hands of the god- and ancestor-brahmins; setting aside the remaining food for the pinda, one places half of it into the father's vessel and half into the maternal grandfather's.

Verse 15 (garuda.1.218.15)

Having placed a seal upon the vessel and given kusha, one lifts the vessel with both hands turned downward — 'Om, the earth is your vessel, the sky your covering; in the brahmin's mouth I offer nectar into nectar, svaha' — this is the consecration of the vessel. 'This Vishnu strode across, planting his foot in the dust' — 'Vishnu, guard this oblation' — with this one places the reversed thumb of the brahmin within the food.

Verse 16 (garuda.1.218.16)

Saying 'driven away,' one scatters barley thrice. 'Om, whatever would be impure I destroy; by me all asuras and danavas are slain; the rakshasas, yakshas, hosts of pishachas, and all sorcerers are slain by me' — with this one scatters white mustard seed.

Verse 17 (garuda.1.218.17)

Then, for the deities called Dhurilochana, saying 'this food with ghee, water, and condiments, svaha,' one makes a further resolve with water, kusha, and the rest. 'May this food be inexhaustible; may the resolve be accomplished.'

Verse 18 (garuda.1.218.18)

Then, having reversed the sacred thread, having placed the food with ghee and condiments in the father's and other brahmins' vessels, having placed ground-touching kusha upon it, with the mantra 'Om, the earth is your vessel,' lifting the vessel with hands turned upward, saying 'Om, this Vishnu,' one places the brahmin's thumb upright upon the food. Saying 'Om, driven away,' one scatters sesame. With the left knee touching the ground: 'To our father, grandfather, of such-and-such gotra, together with their wives — this food, with ghee, water, condiments, free of what is forbidden, svadha.' Having resolved upon the food, saying 'Om, O Svadha, bearing strength, immortality, ghee, milk, and sweet flowing essence, satisfy my father,' one pours a stream of water facing south.

Having recited the Gayatri — 'Om bhur bhuvah svah, tat savitur varenyam, bhargo devasya dhimahi, dhiyo yo nah prachodayat' — one performs the dismissal, then recites 'madhu vata ritayate' — 'may the wind blow sweetly, the rivers flow with sweetness, may the herbs be sweet for us, may night, day, and dawn be sweet, may the earth's dust be sweet, may the sky, our father, be sweet, may the plants be sweet, may the sun be sweet, may the cows be sweet for us' — reciting 'sweet, sweet, sweet.'

— and they were born as Veda-versed brahmins in Kurukshetra. O you who set out on a long journey, why do you now grow weary?'

Verse 22 (garuda.1.218.22)

Then, facing south, with the thread over the left shoulder, before the offered food, one says: 'Om, may those in my family who died by fire, and those who died unburnt, be satisfied by this food given upon the earth; being satisfied, may they go to the higher path' — with this one scatters ghee-anointed, water-soaked food upon the ground on kusha grass.

Verse 23 (garuda.1.218.23)

Then, having given a mouthful of water to the brahmins in order, having recited as before the Gayatri with the vyahritis and the three verses of 'madhu vata,' one asks the god-brahmin: 'Om, was it to your liking?' When he replies 'most pleasing,' one asks: 'Om, is any food left?' — then one eats together with the invited guests. To the father-brahmin, with the thread on the left, one asks: 'Om, are you satisfied?' When he replies 'we are satisfied,' one sprinkles a four-cornered mandala upon the ground and scatters sesame.

'Om, to our father of such-and-such gotra, of such-and-such deity-name, together with your wife — this is your pinda-seat, svadha' — thus within the drawn line, having recited the vyahriti-Gayatri and 'madhu vata' thrice for the grandfather, having made the ghee-anointed food into a pinda, upon kusha: 'to our father of such-and-such gotra, of such-and-such sharman-name, together with your wife — this is your pinda, svadha' — likewise within the line for the grandfather. Then, reciting the vyahriti-Gayatri and 'madhu vata' thrice, one scatters the remaining pinda-portion near the pinda. Saying 'Om, may those who partake of what clings to it be pleased,' one wipes the hands upon the spread kusha; with the water used to wash the pinda, saying 'to our father of such-and-such gotra, of such-and-such sharman, together with your wife — behold this water, and may it reach also those who follow you and those who follow them, svadha,' one sprinkles the ancestor-pinda. Having turned the pinda-vessel face-down, with joined palms, one recites: 'Om, ancestors, rejoice, and distribute according to your due share.' Having touched water, having turned by the left, facing north, having controlled the breath thrice, one recites 'salutation to the six seasons.'

Turning by the left, one offers flowers — 'may there be for me unbroken and unharmed merit, peace, and prosperity.' Facing south, one recites: 'these rejoicing ancestors have distributed according to their due share.' Having loosened one's garment and joined the hands, one recites: 'Om, salutation to you, O ancestors, salutation to you.' Saying 'grant prosperity to our house, O ancestors,' one looks toward the house. Then, having looked again saying 'we are ever devoted to you, O ancestors,' and having said 'this cloth is for you, O ancestors,' one says 'to such-and-such gotra, this cloth is for you, svadha,' offering the sacred cord. Taking the water-vessel in the left hand, with the mantra 'bearing strength, immortality, ghee, milk,' one pours a stream of water upon the pinda.

Verse 26 (garuda.1.218.26)

With the remaining water from the previously placed vessels, having sprinkled each pinda in turn, having invoked the pinda, having offered fragrance and the rest, having placed kusha-leaves upon it, one recites thrice: 'Om, they have eaten and rejoiced, being dear they are pleased, praised, of newest splendor, the wise ones — O Indra, whoever knows your bay horses.'

Likewise, one should give sipping-water to the maternal grandfather's and other brahmins. Saying 'Om, may it be well-sprinkled,' having sprinkled the ground, one recites 'Om, the gods dwell in the midst of the waters; all is established in water; placed in the brahmin's hand, may these waters be auspicious for us' — giving water into the brahmin's hand. 'Lakshmi dwells in flowers, Lakshmi dwells in the lotus, Lakshmi dwells in the cow-pen — may your good favor be with us always, may there be good favor' — with this one offers flowers. 'May there be for me unbroken merit, peace, prosperity, and steadfastness; whatever is auspicious in this world, may that ever be mine' — saying 'Om, may there be the unbroken and the unharmed,' one offers barley and rice.

'For our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather of such-and-such gotra, together with their wives — may this food, drink, and the rest be inexhaustible' — with this one gives sesame-water into the father-brahmin's hand. 'So be it,' the brahmin says. The same inexhaustible blessing is given for the maternal grandfather and the rest. 'Om, may the ancestors be free from wrath; may our lineage flourish, may our benefactors increase, and the Vedas and our progeny too; may our faith never fail, may we have much to give — — may our food be abundant and may we obtain guests; may there be those who ask of us, but may we never have to ask of anyone' — may these true blessings be ours.

When 'may there be good favor' is said, at the place where the pinda was offered, one releases the purifying kusha meant for the arghya. Taking the purifying kusha, touching the father- and other brahmins with it, one says: 'I shall have the svadha uttered — Om, let it be uttered — Om, to father and grandfather, by their names, together with their wives, let svadha be spoken.' When 'so be it, svadha' is said, one pours a stream of water upon the pinda with the mantra 'bearing strength, immortality, ghee.'

Verse 30 (garuda.1.218.30)

Then, saying 'Om, may the Vishvadevas be pleased in this sacrifice,' one gives barley-water into the god-brahmin's hand. When he says 'may they be pleased,' one recites thrice: 'Om, to the gods.'

Verse 31 (garuda.1.218.31)

Having overturned and shaken the pinda-vessels, having sipped water, with the thread over the right shoulder, facing east, one recites: 'Om, to the brahmin of such-and-such gotra, named such-and-such deity-sharman, together with his wife — for the establishment of this Shraddha, this silver I give to you as dakshina' — thus dakshina is given to the god-brahmin.

Verse 32 (garuda.1.218.32)

Then one asks the ancestor-brahmin: 'Are the pindas duly completed?' When he replies 'well completed,' one pours a stream of milk upon the pinda, removes the pinda, and, righting the pinda-vessel for the guest-brahmin, dismisses the gods saying: 'Om, in strength upon strength, O mighty steeds, in our wealth, O wise immortal knowers of truth — drink this sweet essence, rejoice, and being satisfied, depart by the paths the gods travel.' Saying 'Om, depart,' one dismisses the ancestor-brahmin. A brahmin who does not rise should not be detained. The remaining pinda should be offered to cows and the like.

ayaṁ śrāddhavidhiḥ proktaḥ paṭhitaḥ pāpanāśanaḥ anena vidhinā śrāddhaṁ kṛtaṁ vai yatra kutracit

This is the rite of Shraddha that has been declared, whose recitation destroys sin. By this rite, wherever Shraddha is performed,

— it becomes inexhaustible for the ancestors and surely grants them attainment of heaven. Thus has the Parvana-Shraddha been declared, which grants the ancestors the world of Brahma.
