Purvakhanda — Acharakanda · Chapter 219
The Nitya, Vriddhi, and Ekoddishta Shraddhas
Verse 1 (garuda.1.219.1)

Brahma said: Now I shall describe the Nitya-Shraddha (daily ancestor-rite), which follows the same pattern as before but with certain distinctions. 'Om, to our father and grandfather of such-and-such gotra, named such-and-such sharman, together with your wife — I shall perform this Shraddha for you with cooked food.' Here the seating and the rest are done without the Vishvadevas.
Verse 2 (garuda.1.219.2)

Now I shall describe the Vriddhi-Shraddha (prosperity-rite), which follows the same pattern but is distinct. Performed on auspicious occasions such as beholding a newborn son's face, it should be done facing east, with the sacred thread over the right shoulder, using barley, jujube, and kusha, with the deva-tirtha, ending in obeisance, following the southern (right-hand) procedure.
Verse 3 (garuda.1.219.3)

Holding the right knee, one invites the deity-brahmin: 'Today, on this auspicious occasion, in the Shraddha of my great-grandmother, grandmother, and mother of such-and-such gotra, named such-and-such devi, I must perform, with cooked food, the Shraddha of the Vishvadevas named Vasu and Satya, together with you.' When he says 'I shall,' the other deity-brahmin should likewise be invited.
Verse 4 (garuda.1.219.4)

Then: 'On this occasion, I must perform, with cooked food, the auspicious Nandimukha-Shraddha for my great-grandmother of such-and-such gotra, named such-and-such devi, together with you' — this is the invitation to the great-grandmother's brahmin. When he says 'I shall,' the great-great-grandmother and the rest should likewise be invited.
Verse 5 (garuda.1.219.5)

Permission for performing the Shraddha should be sought from the deity, ancestor, and other brahmins. Upon the seat: 'Om, Vishvadevas, come, hear this call, sit upon this kusha; you who dwell in the atmosphere and heaven, whose tongue is fire, worthy of sacrifice, come and rejoice upon this grass — Om, come' — this is the invocation of the Vishvadevas and the offering of fragrance and the rest. Then 'may it be without flaw' is uttered.
Verse 6 (garuda.1.219.6)
tataḥ prapitāmahīprabhṛtīnāmanujñāpanamāsanadānaṁ gandhādidānañca acchidrāvadhāraṇavācanam itthaṁ pitāmahyāḥ mātuḥ tataḥ prapitāmahādīnāṁ anujñāpanam āsanamāvāhanaṅgandhādidānaṁvṛddhapramātāmahādīnāmanujñāpanādikaraṇam oṁ vasusatyasaṁjñakebhyo devebhya etadannaṁ saghṛtaṁ sapānīyaṁ savyañjanaṁ savadaraṁ sadadhi pratiṣiddhavarjitaṁ nama iti annasaṅkalpanam oṁ amukagotre ! matpitāmahamukadevi nāndīmukhi ! etadannaṁ sabadaraṁ sadadhi namaḥ evaṁ mātāmahaprabhātāmahebhyaḥ
Then, having sought permission for the great-grandmother and the rest, one gives the seat, offers fragrance and the rest, and utters 'may it be without flaw.' The same for the grandmother and mother, then permission for the great-grandfather and the rest — seat, invocation, offering of fragrance, together with permission for the great-great-grandfather and the rest. 'Om, to the deities named Vasu and Satya, this food with ghee, water, condiments, jujube, and curd, free from what is forbidden, salutation' — this is the resolve upon the food. 'Om, to my auspicious grandmother of such-and-such gotra, named such-and-such devi — this food with jujube and curd, salutation' — likewise for the maternal grandmother and great-grandmother.
Verse 7 (garuda.1.219.7)

Now I state the distinguishing feature of the Ekoddishta-Shraddha (the rite performed for a single ancestor); listen. First, invitation, washing of the feet, seating — 'Today I must perform, with cooked food, the annual Ekoddishta-Shraddha of my father of such-and-such gotra, named such-and-such deva-sharman, together with you' — permission for the rite, seating, offering of fragrance, resolve upon the food — this is done in silence, with the sacred thread hung around the neck (nivita). Facing north, the guest-shraddha should be performed.
Verse 8 (garuda.1.219.8)

Then, having learned of his satisfaction, facing south, with the thread over the left shoulder, near the remaining food, one scatters food saying 'may [the spirits] burnt by fire [be satisfied].' 'To my father of such-and-such gotra, named such-and-such deva-sharman — behold this water, and to those who follow you and those who follow them, svadha' — a stream of water is given over the drawn line. The rest of the procedure is as before.
