The Manner of Worshipping Shiva

Chapter 21All chaptersChapter 23

Verse 1 (garuda.1.22.1)

sūta uvāca śivārcanaṁ pravakṣyāmi bhaktimuktikaraṁ param śāntaṁ sarvagataṁ śūnyaṁ mātrādvādaśake sthitam

Suta said: I shall declare the worship of Shiva, which is supreme, bestowing devotion and liberation — tranquil, all-pervading, of the nature of emptiness, abiding within twelve mora-units.

Verse 2 (garuda.1.22.2)

pañca vaktrāṇi hrasvāni dīrghāṇyaṁgāni bindunā savisargaṁ vadedastraṁ śiva ūrghvaṁ tathā punaḥ

The five face-mantras take short vowels; the limb-mantras take long vowels together with the bindu. The weapon-mantra should be spoken with visarga, and the Shiva-mantra again with a raised, long vowel.

Verse 3 (garuda.1.22.3)

ṣaṣṭhenādho mahāmantro haumityevākhilārthadaḥ hastābhyāṁ saṁspṛśetpādāvūrdhvaṁ pādāntamastakam

With the sixth vowel, directed downward, "hauṁ" is the great mantra granting every desired end. With both hands one should touch the feet, and then upward, from the feet to the crown.

Verse 4 (garuda.1.22.4)

mahāmudrā hi sarveṣāṁ karāṁganyāsamācaret tālahastena pṛṣṭhaṁ ca astramantreṇa śodhayet

This is the great mudra, by which the placement upon the hands and limbs of all should be performed. With the flat of the hand, one should purify the back, and with the weapon-mantra, purify further.

Verse 5 (garuda.1.22.5)

kaniṣṭhāmāditaḥ kṛtvā tarjanyaṁgāni vinyaset pūjanaṁ saṁpravakṣyāmi karṇikāyāṁ hṛdambuje

Beginning with the little finger up to the index finger, one should perform the limb-placement. Now I shall declare the mode of worship in the pericarp of the heart-lotus.

Verse 6 (garuda.1.22.6)

dharmaṁ jñānaṁ ca vairāgyamaiśvaryyādi hṛdārcayet āvāhanaṁ sthāpanaṁ ca pādyamarghyaṁ hṛdārpayet

One should worship Dharma, Knowledge, Dispassion, Lordship, and the rest, in the heart. Invocation, establishment, water for the feet, and arghya should be offered with the heart-mantra.

Verse 7 (garuda.1.22.7)

ācāmaṁ snapanaṁ pūjāmekādhāraṇatulyakām ? agnikāryyavidhiṁ vakṣye astreṇollekhanaṁ caret

Sipping-water, bathing, and worship, uniformly upon a single foundation. Now I shall declare the rite of the fire-offering — one should trace out the fire-pit with the weapon-mantra.

Verse 8 (garuda.1.22.8)

varmmaṇābhyukṣaṇaṁ kāryyaṁ śaktinyāsaṁ hṛdā caret hṛdi vā śaktigartte ca prakṣipejjātavedasam

With the armor-mantra, sprinkling should be performed, and with the heart-mantra one should place the power. In the heart, or in the pit of power, one should cast the fire.

Verse 9 (garuda.1.22.9)

garbhādhānādikaṁ kṛtvā niṣkṛtiṁ cāsya paścimām hṛdā kṛtvā sarvakarmma śivaṁ sāṁgaṁ tu homayet

Having performed the impregnation-rite and the rest, one should finally perform its expiation. Having done all rites with the heart-mantra, one should offer oblation to Shiva together with his limbs.

Verse 10 (garuda.1.22.10)

pūjayenmaṇḍale śambhuṁ padmagarbhe gavāṁkitam catuḥ ṣaṣṭyantamaṣṭādi svākṣi khādyādimaṇḍalam

One should worship Shambhu in the mandala, within the lotus-heart, marked with the sign of the cow. Extending up to sixty-four, beginning with eight, with its own reckoning — such is the mandala.

Verse 11 (garuda.1.22.11)

khākṣīndrasūryyagaṁ sarvakhādivedendu (devendu) varttanam āgneyyāṁ kārayetkuṇḍamarddhacandranibhaṁ śubham

This reckoning rests in the numbers of sky, eyes, Indra, and sun, varying according to sky, Veda, and moon. In the south-east, one should fashion an auspicious pit shaped like a half-moon.

Verse 12 (garuda.1.22.12)

agniśāstra parāyustho tdṛdayādigaṇocyate astraṁ diśā supadmasya karṇikāyāṁ sadāśivaḥ

In the fire-treatise, the group of heart-mantras and the rest, abiding in the supreme span, is declared. In the direction of the beautiful lotus, place the weapon; and in the pericarp, Sadashiva.

Verse 13 (garuda.1.22.13)

dīkṣāṁ vakṣye pañcatattve sthitāṁ bhūmyādikāṁ pare nivṛttirbhūpratiṣṭhādyairvidyāgniḥ śāntivannijaḥ

Now I shall declare that initiation, which abides in the five elements, from earth up to the supreme. Nivritti, together with the foundation of earth and the rest, is the fire of knowledge, its own kind of peace.

Verse 14 (garuda.1.22.14)

śāntyatītaṁ bhaveddhoma tatparaṁ śāntamavyayam ekaikasya śataṁ homityevaṁ paṁca homayet

That oblation is beyond even peace itself, being supreme, tranquil, and imperishable. One should offer a hundred oblations for each element; in this way, one should perform the fire-offering for all five.

Verse 15 (garuda.1.22.15)

paścātpūrṇāhutiṁ dattvā prā(pra)sādena śivaṁ smaret prāyaścittaviśuddhyarthamekaikāṣṭāhutiṁ kramāt

Then, having offered the final, complete oblation, one should call Shiva to mind with a mind full of grace. For purification through expiation, one should offer eight oblations each, in due order.

Verse 16 (garuda.1.22.16)

homayedastrabījena evaṁ dīkṣāṁ samāpyet yajanavyatirekeṇa gopyaṁ saṁskāramuttamam

Offering oblation with the weapon-seed, one thus completes the initiation. Apart from the act of worship, this excellent rite of consecration is to be kept secret.

Verse 17 (garuda.1.22.17)

evaṁ saṁskāraśuddhasya śivatvaṁ jāyate dhruvam

Thus, for one purified by this rite of consecration, the very state of Shiva is certainly attained.
