sūta uvāca śivārcanaṁ pravakṣyāmi dharmmakāmādisādhanam tribhirmantrairācāmettu svāhāntaiḥ praṇavādikaiḥ

Suta said: I shall declare the worship of Shiva, which accomplishes dharma, desire, and the rest. One should sip water with three mantras, beginning with the syllable Om and ending with svaha.

Verse 2 (garuda.1.23.2)

oṁ hāṁ ātmatattvāya vidyātattvāya hīṁ tathā oṁ hūṁ śivatattvāya svāhā hṛdā syāśrotravaṁdanam

"Om hāṁ, to the principle of the self; hīṁ, to the principle of knowledge; and Om hūṁ, to the principle of Shiva, svaha." With the heart-mantra one should salute the ears.

Verse 3 (garuda.1.23.3)

bhasmasnnānaṁ tarpaṇaṁ ca oṁ hāṁ svāhā sarvamantrakāḥ sarve devāḥ sarvamunirnamo'nto vauṣaḍantakaḥ

One should perform the bath of ash and the water-offering — "Om hāṁ svaha," the essence of all these mantras. The offering to all the gods and all the sages should end with "namah," and again with "vaushat."

Verse 4 (garuda.1.23.4)

svadhāntāḥ sarvapitaraḥ svadhāntāśca pitāmahāḥ oṁ hāṁ prapitāmahebhyastathā mātāmahādayaḥ

The offering to all the ancestors and the paternal grandfathers should end with "svadha." "Om hāṁ, to the great-grandfathers," and likewise to the maternal grandfathers and the rest.

Verse 5 (garuda.1.23.5)

hāṁ namaḥ sarvamātṛbhyastataḥ syātprāṇasaṁyamaḥ ācāmaṁ mārjanaṁ cātho gāyatrīṁ ca japettataḥ

"Hāṁ, salutation to all the mothers." Then one should perform breath-control. Having performed sipping and purification, one should then recite the Gayatri.

Verse 6 (garuda.1.23.6)

oṁ hāṁ tanmaheśāya vidmahe, vāgviśuddhāya dhīmahi, tanno rudraḥ pracodayāt

"Om hāṁ, let us know that great Lord; let us meditate on him who purifies speech; may that Rudra impel us." This is the Shiva-Gayatri.

Verse 7 (garuda.1.23.7)

Having performed the salutation before the Sun, one should worship with the Sun-mantras. "Om hāṁ hīṁ hūṁ haiṁ hauṁ haḥ, salutation to Shiva-Surya." "Om haṁ, to Khakholka, to the form of the Sun, salutation." "Om hrāṁ hrīṁ saḥ, salutation to the Sun."

Verse 8 (garuda.1.23.8)

daṇḍine piṅgale tvātibhūtāni ca tataḥ smaret agnayādau vimaleśānamārādhya paramaṁ sukham

One should also call to mind Dandi, Pingala, and the attendant beings. Having worshipped Vimalesha, Shiva, in the south-east and the other quarters, one attains supreme happiness.

Verse 9 (garuda.1.23.9)

With "raṁ," worship Vidyuta, in the east and the other quarters; in the middle, with "raṁ," worship Sarvatomukhi. One should worship the seat of the Sun and the form of the Sun, and the Sun itself, with "hrāṁ hrīṁ saḥ."

Verse 11 (garuda.1.23.11)

"Om āṁ, to the heart-sun" — the head and crest with "bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ om." Jvalini with "hraṁ," the armor, the weapon, and the initiated among kings should also be worshipped.

Verse 12 (garuda.1.23.12)

"raṁ" for Rahu, "kaṁ" for Ketu. One should worship Tejashchanda with "Om." Having worshipped the Sun and sipped water, one should perform the limb-placement beginning with the little finger.

Verse 14 (garuda.1.23.14)

ātmānaṁ padmasaṁsthaṁ ca hauṁ śivāya tato bahiḥ dvāre nandimahākālau gaṁgā ca yamunātha gauḥ

Meditating upon one's own self, seated on the lotus, as Shiva with "hauṁ," one should then, outside at the doorway, worship Nandi and Mahakala, and Ganga, Yamuna, and the cow.

Verse 17 (garuda.1.23.17)

"Om hauṁ, to Kalavikarini" — then to Balavikarini. To Balapramathini, then to Sarvabhutadamani.

Verse 20 (garuda.1.23.20)

manonmanī yajedetāḥ paṭhimadhye śivāgrataḥ śivāsanaṁ mahāmūrtti mūrttimadhye śivāya ca

One should worship Manonmani — all of these in the place before Shiva. In the midst of Shiva's seat, his great form, and the image, one should worship Shiva himself.

Verse 21 (garuda.1.23.21)

āvāhanaṁ sthāpanaṁ ca sannidhānaṁ nirodhanam sakalīkaraṇaṁ mudrādarśanaṁ cārghyapādyakam

Verse 23 (garuda.1.23.23)

ācāmaṁ mukhavāsaṁ ca tāmbūlaṁ hastaśodhanam chatracāmarapāvitraṁ paramīkaraṇaṁ caret

Sipping-water, mouth-freshener, betel, cleansing of the hand, umbrella and fly-whisk, the sacred thread, and the final consecration should be performed.

Verse 24 (garuda.1.23.24)

rūpakalpake caikāhajapo jāpyasamarpaṇam stutirnatirhṛdādyaiśca jñeyaṁ nāmāṅga pūjanam

In the visualization of the form, one should offer the day's recitation. With the heart-mantra and the rest, one should offer praise and bow — this should be known as the worship of the names and limbs.

Verse 25 (garuda.1.23.25)

In the south-east, north-east, south-west, north-west, in the middle, and in the east and the other quarters, one should worship according to rite. One should worship Indra and the rest, and also Chanda, and offer him the discarded flower-offerings.

Verse 26 (garuda.1.23.26)

guhāyātiguhyagoptā tvaṁ gṛhāṇāsmatkṛtaṁ japam siddhirbhavatu me deva tatprasādāttvayi sthitiḥ

"O guardian of the utterly secret, accept the recitation we have performed. O God, may I attain success; by that grace, may my abiding be in you."

Verse 27 (garuda.1.23.27)

yatkiñcitkriyate karma sadā sukṛtaduṣkṛtam tanme śivapadasthasya rudra kṣapaya śaṅkara

"Whatever action is performed, always good or ill, O Rudra, O Shankara, destroy that of mine, who abides in the state of Shiva."

Verse 28 (garuda.1.23.28)

Verse 29 (garuda.1.23.29)

yatkṛtaṁ yatkariṣyāmi tatsarvaṁ sukṛtaṁ tava(tastavam) tvaṁ trātā viśvanetā ca nānyonātho'stimeśiva

"Whatever I have done, and whatever I shall do, let all of it be a good deed for you. You are the protector and the leader of the universe; O Shiva, I have no other lord."

Verse 30 (garuda.1.23.30)

athānyena prakāreṇa śivapūjāṁ vadāmyaham gaṇaḥ sarasvatī naṁdī mahākālo'thagaṁgayā

Now I shall declare the worship of Shiva in another way. Ganapati, Sarasvati, Nandi, Mahakala, and together with Ganga,

Verse 31 (garuda.1.23.31)

pavanāstraṁ vāstvadhipo dvāri pūrvāditastvime iṁdrādyāḥ pūjanīyāśca tattvāni pṛthivī jalam

the weapon of wind, and the lord of the site, at the doorway, from the east and the other quarters. Indra and the rest are also to be worshipped, as are the elements — earth, water,

Verse 32 (garuda.1.23.32)

tejo vāyurvyoma gaṁdho rasarūpe ca śabdakaḥ sparśo vāk pāṇi pādaṁ ca pāyūpasthaṁ śrutitvacam

fire, wind, ether, smell, taste, form, and sound; touch, speech, hand, foot, the organ of excretion, the generative organ, hearing, skin,

Verse 33 (garuda.1.23.33)

cakṣurjihvā ghrāṇamano buddhiścāhaṁ prakṛtyapi pumānnāgo buddhividye kalā kālo niyatyapi

eye, tongue, smell, mind, intellect, ego, and nature too; the person, attachment, intellect, knowledge, limitation, time, and necessity too,

Verse 34 (garuda.1.23.34)

māyā ca śuddha vidyā ca īśvaraśca sadāśivaḥ śaktiḥ śivaśca tānjñātvā mukto jñānī śivo bhavet

maya, pure knowledge, Ishvara, Sadashiva, Shakti, and Shiva — knowing all of these, the knower becomes liberated and becomes Shiva himself.

Verse 35 (garuda.1.23.35)

yaḥ śivaḥ sa harirbrahmā so'haṁ brahmāsmi śaṅkara

"He who is Shiva is Hari, is Brahma — that am I; I myself am Brahman, O Shankara."

Verse 36 (garuda.1.23.36)

bhūtaśuddhiṁ pravakṣyāmi yayā śuddhaḥ śivo bhavet hṛtpadme sadyomaṁtraḥ syānnivṛttiśca kalā iḍā

Now I shall declare the purification of the elements, by which one becomes purified and becomes Shiva. In the heart-lotus abide the Sadyo-mantra and the power of Nivritti, the ida channel,

Verse 37 (garuda.1.23.37)

piṁgalā dve ca nāḍyau tu prāṇo'pānaśca mārutau indro deho brahmahetuścaturastraṁ ca maṇḍalam

and Pingala — these are the two channels; prana and apana are the two winds. Indra, the body, the cause of Brahma, and the four-cornered mandala —

Verse 38 (garuda.1.23.38)

mahābhūta vaktreṇa lāñchitaṁ vāyumekoddhātaguṇāḥ śarāḥ hṛtsthānasādṛśyarutaṁ śatakoṭipravistaram

[The great element — Air:] Marked by the mouth, its qualities like the five arrows joined with a single seed-syllable, its sound resembling that of the heart's own seat, extending a hundred million leagues — thus one should contemplate the disc of air.

Verse 39 (garuda.1.23.39)

oṁ hrīṁ pratiṣṭhāyai hrūṁ hraḥ phaṭ oṁ hrīṁ hrūṁ vidyāyai hraṁ hraḥ phaṭ caturaśītikoṭīnāmucchrayaṁ bhūmitantrakam

"Om hrim to Pratishtha, hrum hrah phat." "Om hrim hrum to Vidya, hraṁ hraḥ phat." The earth-mandala rises to a height of eighty-four million leagues.

Verse 40 (garuda.1.23.40)

tanmadhye bhavavṛkṣaṁ ca ātmānaṁ ca vicintayet adhomukhīṁ tataḥ pṛthvīṁ tattacchudhdaṁ bhaveddhruvam

In its midst, one should contemplate the tree of worldly existence and one's own self. Then, dissolving the downward-facing earth, that element certainly becomes purified.

Verse 41 (garuda.1.23.41)

vāmādevī pratiṣṭhā ca suṣumnā dhārikā tathā samānodānavaruṇau devatā viṣṇu kāraṇam

Vamadevi, Pratishtha, and likewise Sushumna and Dharika, the samana and udana breaths, the deity Varuna, and Vishnu, its cause.

Verse 42 (garuda.1.23.42)

uddhātāśca guṇā vedāḥ śvetaṁ dhyānaṁ tathaiva ca evaṁ kuryyātkaṇṭhapadmamarddhacandrākhyamaṇḍalam

The extracted seed, the quality, the Vedas, and white meditation — thus one should proceed. In the throat-lotus, one should contemplate the water-disc called the half-moon.

Verse 43 (garuda.1.23.43)

padmāṁkitaṁ dviviṁśatikakoṭivistīrṇamau smaret caturnavatyucchrayaṁ ca ātmānaṁ ca adhomukham

Marked with a lotus, one should recall it as twenty-two million leagues in extent, ninety-four million in height, and the self facing downward.

Verse 44 (garuda.1.23.44)

tālusthānaṁ ca padmaṁ ca aghoro vidyayānvitaḥ nābhyo(ḍyo) ṣṭhayorhastijihvādhyāno nāgognidevatā

At the palate, the lotus, and the disc joined with the lore of Aghora. At both lips, meditate on the elephant's trunk; the serpent and fire are its deities.

Verse 45 (garuda.1.23.45)

rudrahetustriruddhātāstriguṇā raktavarṇakam jvālākṛte trikoṇaṁ ca catuḥ koṭiśatāni ca

Rudra is its cause; three extracted seeds, three qualities, red in color, a triangle shaped like a flame, and four billion leagues,

Verse 46 (garuda.1.23.46)

vistīrṇaṁ ca samutsedhaṁ rudratattvaṁ vicintayet lalāṭe vai tatpuruṣaḥ śāntiryaḥ śādvalaṁ budhāḥ (vṛṣā)

extended and towering — one should contemplate this fire-principle. At the forehead is the disc of Tatpurusha, of the nature of peace, verdant in hue — thus the wise should know.

Verse 47 (garuda.1.23.47)

kūrmaśca kṛkaro vāyurdeva īśvarakāraṇam dviruddhāto guṇau dvau ca dhūmraṣaṭkoṇamaṇḍalam

Kurma and Krikara are subsidiary forms of the wind; Ishvara is its divine cause. Two extracted seeds, two qualities, and a smoke-colored hexagonal mandala.

Verse 48 (garuda.1.23.48)

biṁdvaṅkitaṁ cāṣṭakoṭivistīrṇaṁ cocchrayastathā caturdaśādhikaṁ koṭivāyutattvaṁ vicintayet

Marked with the bindu, eight million leagues in extent, and fourteen million in height — one should contemplate this principle of air.

Verse 49 (garuda.1.23.49)

dvādaśati sarasije śāntyatītāstatheśvarāḥ kuhūśca śaṅakhinī nāḍyo devadatto dhanañjayaḥ

In the twelve-petaled lotus abide the power beyond peace and the lord Ishvara. The channels Kuhu and Shankhini, and the breaths Devadatta and Dhananjaya —

Verse 50 (garuda.1.23.50)

śikheśānakāraṇaṁ ca sadāśiva iti smṛtaḥ guṇa ekastathoddhātaḥ śuddhasphaṭikavatsmaret

At the crest is the disc of Ishana, whose cause is declared to be Sadashiva. One quality, one extracted seed; one should recall it as pure as crystal.

Verse 51 (garuda.1.23.51)

ṣoḍaśakoṭivistīrṇaṁ pañcaviṁśatikocchrayam varttulaṁ ciṁtayevdyoma bhūtaśuddhirudāhṛtā

One should contemplate the round disc of ether, sixteen million in extent, twenty-five million in height — thus has the purification of the elements been declared.

Verse 52 (garuda.1.23.52)

guṇayo gururbījaguruḥ śaktayanaṁtau ca dharmmakaḥ jñānavairāgyamaiśvaryyaistataḥ pūrvādipatrake

The guru and the seed-guru are both qualities; Shakti and Ananta, and Dharma — together with knowledge, dispassion, and lordship — should be placed in the petals beginning with the east.

Verse 53 (garuda.1.23.53)

adhorddhvavadane dve ca padmakarṇikakesaram vāmādyā ātmavidyā ca sadā dhyāyecchivākhyakam

Two discs, facing downward and upward, in the pericarp and filaments of the lotus, together with Vama and the other forms of self-knowledge — one should ever meditate upon that principle called Shiva.

Verse 54 (garuda.1.23.54)

tattvaṁ śivāsane mūrttirhī hauṁ vidyādehāya namaḥ baddhapadmāsanāsīnaḥ sitaḥ ṣoḍaśavārṣikaḥ

Upon Shiva's seat is that embodiment of principle — "hrīṁ hauṁ, salutation to the body of knowledge." One should meditate upon him seated in the lotus posture, white in hue, appearing as if sixteen years of age.

Verse 55 (garuda.1.23.55)

pañcavaktraḥ karāgraiḥ svairdaśabhiścaiva dhārayan abhayaṁ prasādaṁ śaktiṁ śūlaṁ khaṭvāṅgamīśvaraḥ

Five-faced, holding with the tips of his own ten hands — the gesture of fearlessness, the gesture of grace, the spear, the trident, the skull-staff —

Verse 56 (garuda.1.23.56)

dakṣaiḥ karairvāmakaiśca bhujaṁgaṁ cākṣasūtrakam ḍamarukaṁ nīlotpalaṁ bījapūrakamuttamam

in his right hands and his left, a serpent, a rosary, a small drum, a blue lotus, and an excellent citron —

Verse 57 (garuda.1.23.57)

icchājñānakriyāśaktistrinetro hi sadāśivaḥ evaṁ śivārccanadhyānī sarvadā kālavarjitaḥ

possessed of the powers of will, knowledge, and action, the three-eyed Sadashiva — thus one who worships and meditates upon Shiva in this way becomes forever beyond the reach of death.

Verse 58 (garuda.1.23.58)

ihāhorā vacāreṇa trīṇi varṣāṇi jīvati dinadvayasya cāreṇa jīvedvarṣadvayaṁ naraḥ

In this world, by the movement over a single day and night, a man lives three years. By the movement over two days, a man lives two years.

Verse 59 (garuda.1.23.59)

dinatrayasya cāreṇa varṣamekaṁ sa jīvati nākāle śītale mṛtyuruṣṇe caiva tu kārake

By the movement over three days, he lives one year. Death does not come out of season — in both the cool and the hot condition, this is the determining sign.
