Verse 1 (garuda.1.34.1)

।।रुद्र उवाच । पुनर्देवार्चनं ब्रूहि हृषीकेश गदाधर । श्रृण्वतो नास्ति तृप्तिर्मे गदतस्तव पूजनम्

rudra uvāca punardevārcanaṁ brūhi hṛṣīkeśa gadādhara śrṛṇvato nāsti tṛptirme gadatastava pūjanam

Rudra said: O Hrishikesha, O mace-bearer, again declare the worship of a god. Hearing the worship you speak of, I find no satiety.

Verse 2 (garuda.1.34.2)

हरिरुवाच । हयग्रीवस्य देवस्य पूजनं कथयामि ते । तच्छृणुष्व जगन्नाथो येन विष्णुः प्रतुष्यति

hariruvāca hayagrīvasya devasya pūjanaṁ kathayāmi te tacchṛṇuṣva jagannātho yena viṣṇuḥ pratuṣyati

Hari said: I shall tell you the worship of the God Hayagriva. O Lord of the universe, hear that by which Vishnu is pleased.

Verse 3 (garuda.1.34.3)

मूलमन्त्रं महादेव हयग्रीवस्य वाचकम् । प्रवक्ष्यामि परं पुण्यं तदादौ श्रृणु शङ्कर

mūlamantraṁ mahādeva hayagrīvasya vācakam pravakṣyāmi paraṁ puṇyaṁ tadādau śrṛṇu śaṅkara

O great God, I shall declare the root-mantra expressing Hayagriva, which is supremely sacred. O Shankara, hear it first.

Verse 4 (garuda.1.34.4)

ॐ सौं क्षौं शिरसे नमः इति प्रणवसंयुतः । अयं नवाक्षरोमन्त्रः सर्वविद्याप्रदायकः

oṁ sauṁ kṣauṁ śirase namaḥ iti praṇavasaṁyutaḥ ayaṁ navākṣaromantraḥ sarvavidyāpradāyakaḥ

"Om sauṁ kṣauṁ, salutation to the head" — this is joined with the syllable Om. This nine-syllabled mantra grants every branch of learning.

Verse 5 (garuda.1.34.5)

अस्याङ्गानि महादेव ताञ्छृणुष्व वृषध्वज । ॐ क्षां हृदयाय नमः । ॐ क्षीं शिरसे स्वाहाशिरः प्रोक्तं क्षूं वषट् तथा

asyāṅgāni mahādeva tāñchṛṇuṣva vṛṣadhvaja oṁ kṣāṁ hṛdayāya namaḥ oṁ kṣīṁ śirase svāhāśiraḥ proktaṁ kṣūṁ vaṣaṭ tathā

O great God, O bearer of the bull-banner, hear its limb-mantras — "Om kṣāṁ, to the heart, salutation. Om kṣīṁ, to the head, svaha" — the head has been declared; and "kṣūṁ," vashat, likewise.

Verse 6 (garuda.1.34.6)

ॐ कारयुक्ता देवस्य शिखा ज्ञेया वृषध्वज । ॐ क्षैं कवचाय हुं वै कवचं परिकीर्त्तितम्

oṁ kārayuktā devasya śikhā jñeyā vṛṣadhvaja oṁ kṣaiṁ kavacāya huṁ vai kavacaṁ parikīrttitam

O bearer of the bull-banner, know the crest of the God to be joined with the syllable Om. "Om kṣaiṁ, to the armor, hum" — this is declared to be the armor.

Verse 7 (garuda.1.34.7)

ॐ क्षौं नेत्रत्रयाय वौषट् नेत्रं देवस्य कीर्तितम् । ॐ हः अस्त्राय फट् अस्त्रं देवस्य कीर्त्तितम्

oṁ kṣauṁ netratrayāya vauṣaṭ netraṁ devasya kīrtitam oṁ haḥ astrāya phaṭ astraṁ devasya kīrttitam

"Om kṣauṁ, to the three eyes, vaushat" — this is declared to be the eyes of the God. "Om haḥ, to the weapon, phat" — this is declared to be the weapon of the God.

Verse 8 (garuda.1.34.8)

पूजाविधिं प्रवक्ष्यामि तन्मे निगदतः श्रृणु आदौ स्नात्वा तथाचम्य ततो यागगृहं व्रजेत्

pūjāvidhiṁ pravakṣyāmi tanme nigadataḥ śrṛṇu ādau snātvā tathācamya tato yāgagṛhaṁ vrajet

Now I shall declare the rite of worship; hear what I say. First, having bathed and sipped water, one should go to the sacrificial hall.

Verse 9 (garuda.1.34.9)

ततः प्रविश्य विधिवत्कुर्य्याद्वं शोषणादिकम् । यं क्षौं रमिति बीजैश्च कठिनीकृत्य लमिति

tataḥ praviśya vidhivatkuryyādvaṁ śoṣaṇādikam yaṁ kṣauṁ ramiti bījaiśca kaṭhinīkṛtya lamiti

Then, having entered, one should duly perform desiccation and the rest with "vaṁ." With the seed-syllables "yaṁ kṣauṁ raṁ" and with "laṁ," one should harden the body.

Verse 10 (garuda.1.34.10)

अण्डमुत्पाद्य च ततः ॐ कारेणैव भेदयेत् । अण्डमध्ये हयग्रीवमात्मानं परिचिन्तयेत्

aṇḍamutpādya ca tataḥ oṁ kāreṇaiva bhedayet aṇḍamadhye hayagrīvamātmānaṁ paricintayet

Then, having generated the egg, one should split it with the syllable Om alone. In the midst of the egg, one should contemplate one's own self as Hayagriva.

Verse 11 (garuda.1.34.11)

शङ्खकुन्देन्दुधवलं मृणालरजतप्रभम् । गोक्षीरसदृशं तद्वत्सूर्यकोटिसमग्रभम् । शङ्खं चक्रं गदां पद्मं धारयन्तं चतुर्भुजम्

śaṅkhakundendudhavalaṁ mṛṇālarajataprabham gokṣīrasadṛśaṁ tadvatsūryakoṭisamagrabham śaṅkhaṁ cakraṁ gadāṁ padmaṁ dhārayantaṁ caturbhujam

One should meditate upon him, white as the conch, the kunda flower, and the moon, radiant as the lotus-stalk and silver, like the milk of a cow, and radiant as ten million suns — the four-armed one bearing conch, discus, mace, and lotus.

Verse 12 (garuda.1.34.12)

किरीटिनं कुण्डलिनं वनमालासमंन्वितम् । सुचक्रं सुकपोलं च पीताम्बरधरं विभुम्

kirīṭinaṁ kuṇḍalinaṁ vanamālāsamaṁnvitam sucakraṁ sukapolaṁ ca pītāmbaradharaṁ vibhum

crowned, wearing earrings, adorned with the forest-garland, of beautiful discus and beautiful cheeks, clad in yellow, the all-pervading Lord.

Verse 13 (garuda.1.34.13)

भावयित्वा महात्मानं सर्वदेवैः समन्वितम् । अङ्गमन्त्रैस्ततो न्यासं मूलमन्त्रेण वै तथा

bhāvayitvā mahātmānaṁ sarvadevaiḥ samanvitam aṅgamantraistato nyāsaṁ mūlamantreṇa vai tathā

Having contemplated that great soul, together with all the gods, one should then perform the placement with the limb-mantras and likewise with the root-mantra.

Verse 14 (garuda.1.34.14)

ततश्च दर्शयेन्मुद्रां शङ्खपद्मादिकां शुभाम् । ध्यायेद्ध्यात्वार्चयेद्विष्णुं मूलमन्त्रेण शङ्कर

tataśca darśayenmudrāṁ śaṅkhapadmādikāṁ śubhām dhyāyeddhyātvārcayedviṣṇuṁ mūlamantreṇa śaṅkara

Then one should display the auspicious mudras of the conch, lotus, and the rest. O Shankara, having meditated, one should worship Vishnu with the root-mantra.

Verse 15 (garuda.1.34.15)

ततश्चावाहयेद्रुद्र देवता आसनस्य याः । ॐ हयग्रीवासनस्य आगच्छत च देवताः

tataścāvāhayedrudra devatā āsanasya yāḥ oṁ hayagrīvāsanasya āgacchata ca devatāḥ

Then, O Rudra, one should invoke the deities of the seat — "Om, deities of Hayagriva's seat, come."

Verse 16 (garuda.1.34.16)

आवाह्य मण्डले तास्तु पूजयेत्स्वस्तिकादिके । द्वारे धातुर्विधातुश्च पूजा कार्य्या वृषध्वज

āvāhya maṇḍale tāstu pūjayetsvastikādike dvāre dhāturvidhātuśca pūjā kāryyā vṛṣadhvaja

Having invoked them, one should worship in the mandala marked with the swastika and the rest. O bearer of the bull-banner, at the doorway, Dhata and Vidhata should be worshipped.

Verse 17 (garuda.1.34.17)

समस्तपरिवाराय अच्युताय नम इति । अस्य मध्येऽर्चनं कार्य्यं द्वारे गङ्गाञ्च पूजयेत्

samastaparivārāya acyutāya nama iti asya madhye'rcanaṁ kāryyaṁ dvāre gaṅgāñca pūjayet

"Salutation to Achyuta together with his entire retinue" — in its midst worship should be performed. At the doorway one should worship Ganga,

Verse 18 (garuda.1.34.18)

यमुनां च महादेवीं शङ्खपद्मनिधई तथा । गरुडं पूजयेदग्रे मध्ये शक्तिञ्च पूजयेत्

yamunāṁ ca mahādevīṁ śaṅkhapadmanidhaī tathā garuḍaṁ pūjayedagre madhye śaktiñca pūjayet

and the great goddess Yamuna, and the treasures Shankha and Padma. In front, one should worship Garuda; in the middle, Shakti.

Verse 19 (garuda.1.34.19)

आधाराख्यां महादेव ततः कूर्मं समर्चयेत् । अनन्तं पृथिवीं पश्चाद्धर्मज्ञाने(नौ) ततोऽर्चयेत्

ādhārākhyāṁ mahādeva tataḥ kūrmaṁ samarcayet anantaṁ pṛthivīṁ paścāddharmajñāne(nau) tato'rcayet

O great God, one should duly worship the power called Adhara, then the Tortoise. Ananta and the Earth, and thereafter Dharma and Knowledge should be worshipped.

Verse 20 (garuda.1.34.20)

वैराग्यमथ चैश्वर्य्यमाग्नेयादिषु पूजयेत् । अधर्माज्ञानावैराग्यानैश्रर्ग्यादींस्तु पूर्वतः

vairāgyamatha caiśvaryyamāgneyādiṣu pūjayet adharmājñānāvairāgyānaiśrargyādīṁstu pūrvataḥ

Dispassion and Lordship should be worshipped in the south-east and the other quarters. Non-dharma, Ignorance, Non-dispassion, Powerlessness, and the rest, from the east.

Verse 21 (garuda.1.34.21)

सत्त्वं रजस्तमश्चैव मध्यदेशेऽथ पूजयेत् । नन्दं नालं च पद्मं च मध्ये चैव प्रपूजयेत्

sattvaṁ rajastamaścaiva madhyadeśe'tha pūjayet nandaṁ nālaṁ ca padmaṁ ca madhye caiva prapūjayet

Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas should be worshipped in the middle region. Nanda, the stalk, and the lotus should also be duly worshipped in the middle.

Verse 22 (garuda.1.34.22)

अर्कसोमाग्निसंज्ञानां मण्डलानां हि पूजनम् । मध्यदेशे प्रकर्त्तव्यमिति रुद्र प्रकीर्त्तितम्

arkasomāgnisaṁjñānāṁ maṇḍalānāṁ hi pūjanam madhyadeśe prakarttavyamiti rudra prakīrttitam

The worship of the discs called Sun, Moon, and Fire should be performed in the middle region — O Rudra, thus it has been declared.

Verse 23 (garuda.1.34.23)

विमलोत्कर्षिणी ज्ञाना क्रियायोगे वृषध्वज । प्रह्वी सत्या तथेशानानुग्रहौ शक्तयो ह्यमूः

vimalotkarṣiṇī jñānā kriyāyoge vṛṣadhvaja prahvī satyā tatheśānānugrahau śaktayo hyamūḥ

O bearer of the bull-banner, Vimala, Utkarshini, Jnana, Kriya, Yoga, Prahvi, Satya, Ishana, and Anugraha — these are the powers.

Verse 24 (garuda.1.34.24)

पूर्वादिषु च पत्रेषु पूज्याश्च विमलादयः । अनुग्रहा कर्णिकायां पूज्या श्रेयोऽर्थिभिर्नरैः

pūrvādiṣu ca patreṣu pūjyāśca vimalādayaḥ anugrahā karṇikāyāṁ pūjyā śreyo'rthibhirnaraiḥ

In the petals, east and the rest, Vimala and the others are to be worshipped. In the pericarp, Anugraha is to be worshipped by men desiring well-being.

Verse 25 (garuda.1.34.25)

प्रणवाद्यैर्नमोऽन्तैश्च चतुर्थ्यन्तैश्च नामभिः । मन्त्रैरेभिर्महादेव आसनं परिपूजयेत्

praṇavādyairnamo'ntaiśca caturthyantaiśca nāmabhiḥ mantrairebhirmahādeva āsanaṁ paripūjayet

With these mantras, beginning with Om and ending with "namah," their names ending in the dative case, O great God, one should duly worship the seat.

Verse 26 (garuda.1.34.26)

स्नानगन्धप्रदानेन पुष्पधूपप्रदानतः । दीपनैवेद्यदानेन आसनस्यार्चनं शुभम्

snānagandhapradānena puṣpadhūpapradānataḥ dīpanaivedyadānena āsanasyārcanaṁ śubham

By offering bathing and sandal-paste, by offering flowers and incense, by offering a lamp and food, one should auspiciously worship the seat.

Verse 27 (garuda.1.34.27)

कर्त्तव्यं विधिनानेन इति ते हर कीर्त्तितम् । ततश्चावाहयेद्देवं हयग्रीवं सुरेश्वरम्

karttavyaṁ vidhinānena iti te hara kīrttitam tataścāvāhayeddevaṁ hayagrīvaṁ sureśvaram

This should be performed according to this rite — O Hara, thus has it been declared to you. Then one should invoke the God Hayagriva, Lord of the gods.

Verse 28 (garuda.1.34.28)

वामनासापुटेनैव आगच्छन्तं विचिन्तयेत् । आगच्छतः प्रयोगेण मूलमन्त्रेण शङ्कर

vāmanāsāpuṭenaiva āgacchantaṁ vicintayet āgacchataḥ prayogeṇa mūlamantreṇa śaṅkara

One should conceive of him as coming through the left nostril. O Shankara, with the root-mantra together with the word "come,"

Verse 29 (garuda.1.34.29)

आवाहनं प्रकर्त्तव्यं देवदेवस्य शङ्खिनः । आवाह्यमण्डले तस्य न्यासं कुर्य्यादतन्द्रितः

āvāhanaṁ prakarttavyaṁ devadevasya śaṅkhinaḥ āvāhyamaṇḍale tasya nyāsaṁ kuryyādatandritaḥ

the invocation of the conch-bearing God of gods should be performed. Having invoked him into the mandala, one should perform the placement without negligence.

Verse 30 (garuda.1.34.30)

न्यासं कृत्वा च तत्रस्थं चिन्तयेत्परमेश्वरम् । हयग्रीवं महादेवं सुरासुरनमस्कृतम्

nyāsaṁ kṛtvā ca tatrasthaṁ cintayetparameśvaram hayagrīvaṁ mahādevaṁ surāsuranamaskṛtam

Having performed the placement, one should contemplate the Supreme Lord abiding there — the great God Hayagriva, saluted by gods and demons.

Verse 31 (garuda.1.34.31)

इन्द्रादिलोकपालैश्च संयुक्तं विष्णुमव्ययम् । ध्यात्वा प्रदर्शयेन्मुद्राः शङ्खचक्रादिकाः शुभाः

indrādilokapālaiśca saṁyuktaṁ viṣṇumavyayam dhyātvā pradarśayenmudrāḥ śaṅkhacakrādikāḥ śubhāḥ

Having meditated upon the imperishable Vishnu, joined with Indra and the other guardians of the quarters, one should display the auspicious mudras of the conch, discus, and the rest.

Verse 32 (garuda.1.34.32)

पाद्यार्घ्याचमनीयानि ततो दद्याच्च विष्णवे । स्नापयेच्च ततो देवं पद्मनाभमनामयम्

pādyārghyācamanīyāni tato dadyācca viṣṇave snāpayecca tato devaṁ padmanābhamanāmayam

Then one should offer padya, arghya, and water for sipping to Vishnu. Then one should bathe the flawless God, Padmanabha.

Verse 33 (garuda.1.34.33)

देवं संस्थाप्य विधिवद्वस्त्रं दद्याद्वृषध्वज । ततो ह्याचमनं दद्यादुपवीतं ततः शुभम्

devaṁ saṁsthāpya vidhivadvastraṁ dadyādvṛṣadhvaja tato hyācamanaṁ dadyādupavītaṁ tataḥ śubham

Having duly established the God, O bearer of the bull-banner, one should offer clothing. Then one should offer sipping-water, and then the auspicious sacred thread.

Verse 34 (garuda.1.34.34)

ततश्च मण्डले रुद्र ध्यायेद्देवं परेश्वरम् । ध्यात्वा पाद्यादिकं भूयो दद्याद्देवाय शङ्कर

tataśca maṇḍale rudra dhyāyeddevaṁ pareśvaram dhyātvā pādyādikaṁ bhūyo dadyāddevāya śaṅkara

Then, O Rudra, one should meditate upon the Supreme Lord in the mandala. Having meditated, O Shankara, one should again offer padya and the rest to the God.

Verse 35 (garuda.1.34.35)

दद्याद्भैरवदेवाय मूलमन्त्रेण शङ्कर । ॐ क्षां हृदयाय नमः अनेन हृदयं यजेत्

dadyādbhairavadevāya mūlamantreṇa śaṅkara oṁ kṣāṁ hṛdayāya namaḥ anena hṛdayaṁ yajet

O Shankara, one should offer to the God Bhairava with the root-mantra. "Om kṣāṁ, to the heart, salutation" — with this one should worship the heart.

Verse 36 (garuda.1.34.36)

ॐ क्षीं शिरसे नमश्च शिरसः पूजनं भवेत् । ॐ क्षूं शिखायै नमश्च शिखामेतेन पूजयेत्

oṁ kṣīṁ śirase namaśca śirasaḥ pūjanaṁ bhavet oṁ kṣūṁ śikhāyai namaśca śikhāmetena pūjayet

"Om kṣīṁ, to the head, salutation" — by this the head is worshipped. "Om kṣūṁ, to the crest, salutation" — with this one should worship the crest.

Verse 37 (garuda.1.34.37)

ॐ क्षैं कवचाय नमः कवचं परिपूजयेत् । ॐ क्षौं नेत्राय नमश्च नेत्रं चानेन पूजयेत्

oṁ kṣaiṁ kavacāya namaḥ kavacaṁ paripūjayet oṁ kṣauṁ netrāya namaśca netraṁ cānena pūjayet

"Om kṣaiṁ, to the armor, salutation" — with this one should duly worship the armor. "Om kṣauṁ, to the eyes, salutation" — with this one should worship the eyes.

Verse 38 (garuda.1.34.38)

ॐ क्षः अस्त्राय नम इति अस्त्रं चानेन पूजयेत् । हृदयं च शिरश्चैव शिखां च कवचं तथा

oṁ kṣaḥ astrāya nama iti astraṁ cānena pūjayet hṛdayaṁ ca śiraścaiva śikhāṁ ca kavacaṁ tathā

"Om kṣaḥ, to the weapon, salutation" — with this one should worship the weapon. The heart, the head, the crest, and the armor —

Verse 39 (garuda.1.34.39)

पूर्वादिषु प्रदेशेषु ह्येतास्तु परिपूजयेत् । कोणेष्वस्त्रं यजेद्रुद्र नेत्रं मध्यै प्रपूजयेत्

pūrvādiṣu pradeśeṣu hyetāstu paripūjayet koṇeṣvastraṁ yajedrudra netraṁ madhyai prapūjayet

one should duly worship all of these in the east and the other quarters. O Rudra, one should worship the weapon in the corners, and duly worship the eyes in the middle.

Verse 40 (garuda.1.34.40)

पूजयेत्परमां देवीं लक्ष्मीं लक्ष्मीप्रदां शुभाम् । शंखं पद्मं तथा चक्रं गदां पूर्वादितोऽर्चयेत्

pūjayetparamāṁ devīṁ lakṣmīṁ lakṣmīpradāṁ śubhām śaṁkhaṁ padmaṁ tathā cakraṁ gadāṁ pūrvādito'rcayet

One should worship the supreme, auspicious goddess Lakshmi, giver of fortune. The conch, lotus, discus, and mace should be worshipped from the east and the other quarters.

Verse 41 (garuda.1.34.41)

खड्गं च मुसलं पाशमंकुशं सशरं धनुः । पूजयेत्पूर्वतो रुद्र एभिर्मन्त्रैः स्वनामकैः

khaḍgaṁ ca musalaṁ pāśamaṁkuśaṁ saśaraṁ dhanuḥ pūjayetpūrvato rudra ebhirmantraiḥ svanāmakaiḥ

The sword, pestle, noose, goad, and bow with arrow — O Rudra, from the east, with these mantras, each in its own name, one should worship.

Verse 42 (garuda.1.34.42)

श्रीवत्सं कौस्तुभं मालां तथा पीताम्बरं शुभम् । पूजयेत्पूर्वतो रुद्र शंखचक्रगदाधरम्

śrīvatsaṁ kaustubhaṁ mālāṁ tathā pītāmbaraṁ śubham pūjayetpūrvato rudra śaṁkhacakragadādharam

Shrivatsa, Kaustubha, the garland, and the auspicious yellow garment — O Rudra, from the east, one should worship the bearer of conch, discus, and mace.

Verse 43 (garuda.1.34.43)

ब्रह्माणं नारदं सिद्धं गुरुं परगुरुं तथा । गुरोश्च पादुके तद्वत्परमस्य गुरोस्तथा

brahmāṇaṁ nāradaṁ siddhaṁ guruṁ paraguruṁ tathā gurośca pāduke tadvatparamasya gurostathā

Brahma, Narada, the Siddha, the guru, and the supreme guru, and the sandals of the guru, and likewise of the supreme guru.

Verse 44 (garuda.1.34.44)

इन्द्रं सवाहनं चाथ परिवारयुतं तथा । अग्निं यमं निर्ऋतिं च वरुणं वायुमेव च

indraṁ savāhanaṁ cātha parivārayutaṁ tathā agniṁ yamaṁ nirṛtiṁ ca varuṇaṁ vāyumeva ca

Indra, together with his mount and retinue, and Agni, Yama, Nirriti, Varuna, and Vayu,

Verse 45 (garuda.1.34.45)

सोममीशानमेवं वै ब्रह्माणं परिपूजयेत् । पूर्वादिकोर्ध्वपर्य्यन्तं पूजयेद्वृषभध्वज

somamīśānamevaṁ vai brahmāṇaṁ paripūjayet pūrvādikordhvaparyyantaṁ pūjayedvṛṣabhadhvaja

Soma, Ishana, and likewise Brahma should be duly worshipped. O bearer of the bull-banner, one should worship from the east and the other quarters up to the zenith.

Verse 46 (garuda.1.34.46)

वज्रं शक्तिं तथा दण्डं खङ्गं पाशं ध्वजं गदाम् । त्रिशूलं चक्रपद्मे च आयुधान्यथ पूजयेत्

vajraṁ śaktiṁ tathā daṇḍaṁ khaṅgaṁ pāśaṁ dhvajaṁ gadām triśūlaṁ cakrapadme ca āyudhānyatha pūjayet

The thunderbolt, spear, staff, sword, noose, banner, mace, trident, discus, and lotus — one should worship these weapons.

Verse 47 (garuda.1.34.47)

विष्वक्सेनं ततो देवमैशान्यां दिशि पूजयेत् । एभिर्मन्त्रैर्नमोऽन्तैश्च प्रणवाद्यैर्वृषध्वज

viṣvaksenaṁ tato devamaiśānyāṁ diśi pūjayet ebhirmantrairnamo'ntaiśca praṇavādyairvṛṣadhvaja

Then one should worship the God Vishvaksena in the north-east. O bearer of the bull-banner, with these mantras beginning with Om and ending with "namah,"

Verse 48 (garuda.1.34.48)

पूजा कार्य्या महादेव ह्यनन्तस्य वृषध्वज । देवस्य मूलमन्त्रेण पूजा कार्य्या वृषध्वज

pūjā kāryyā mahādeva hyanantasya vṛṣadhvaja devasya mūlamantreṇa pūjā kāryyā vṛṣadhvaja

O great God, O bearer of the bull-banner, worship should be performed for Ananta. O bearer of the bull-banner, worship should be performed with the God's root-mantra.

Verse 49 (garuda.1.34.49)

गन्धं पुष्पं तथा धूपं दीपं नैवेद्यमेव च । प्रदक्षिणं नमस्कारं जप्यं तस्मै समर्पयेत्

gandhaṁ puṣpaṁ tathā dhūpaṁ dīpaṁ naivedyameva ca pradakṣiṇaṁ namaskāraṁ japyaṁ tasmai samarpayet

Sandal-paste, flowers, incense, a lamp, food-offering, circumambulation, salutation, and recitation — one should offer all of this to him.

Verse 50 (garuda.1.34.50)

स्तुवीत चान्या स्तुत्या प्रणवाद्यैर्वृषध्वज । ॐ नमो हयशिरसे विद्याध्यक्षाय वै नमः

stuvīta cānyā stutyā praṇavādyairvṛṣadhvaja oṁ namo hayaśirase vidyādhyakṣāya vai namaḥ

O bearer of the bull-banner, one should praise him with this further hymn, beginning with Om — "Om, salutation to the horse-headed one, salutation to the overseer of all learning."

Verse 51 (garuda.1.34.51)

नमो विद्यास्वरूपाय विद्यादात्रे नमोनमः । नमः शान्ताय देवाय त्रिगुणायात्मने नमः

namo vidyāsvarūpāya vidyādātre namonamaḥ namaḥ śāntāya devāya triguṇāyātmane namaḥ

"Salutation to the very form of learning, salutation again and again to the giver of learning. Salutation to the tranquil God; salutation to the self possessed of the three qualities."

Verse 52 (garuda.1.34.52)

सुरासुरनिहन्त्रे च सर्वदुष्टविनाशिने । सर्वलोकाधिपतये ब्रह्मरूपाय वै नमः

surāsuranihantre ca sarvaduṣṭavināśine sarvalokādhipataye brahmarūpāya vai namaḥ

"To the slayer of gods and demons, the destroyer of all the wicked, the Lord of all the worlds, of the form of Brahman, salutation."

Verse 53 (garuda.1.34.53)

नमश्चेश्वरवन्द्याय शङ्कचक्रधारय च । नम आद्याय दांताय सर्वसत्त्वहिताय च

namaśceśvaravandyāya śaṅkacakradhāraya ca nama ādyāya dāṁtāya sarvasattvahitāya ca

"Salutation to the one revered even by lords, the bearer of conch and discus. Salutation to the primal one, the self-restrained one, the benefactor of all beings."

Verse 54 (garuda.1.34.54)

त्रिगुणायागुणायैव ब्रह्मविष्णुस्वरूपिणे । कर्त्रे हर्त्रे सुरेशाय सर्वगाय नमो नमः

triguṇāyāguṇāyaiva brahmaviṣṇusvarūpiṇe kartre hartre sureśāya sarvagāya namo namaḥ

"To the one possessed of the three qualities, yet beyond qualities, of the form of Brahma and Vishnu. To the creator, the destroyer, the Lord of the gods, the all-pervading one, salutation again and again."

Verse 55 (garuda.1.34.55)

इत्येवं संस्तवं कृत्वा देवदेवं विचिन्तयेत् । हृत्पद्मे विमले रुद्र शङ्खचक्रगदाधरम्

ityevaṁ saṁstavaṁ kṛtvā devadevaṁ vicintayet hṛtpadme vimale rudra śaṅkhacakragadādharam

Having thus offered this praise, one should contemplate the God of gods — O Rudra, the bearer of conch, discus, and mace, in the stainless lotus of the heart.

Verse 56 (garuda.1.34.56)

सूर्यकोटिप्रतीकाशं सर्वावयवसुन्दरम् । हयग्रीवोमहीशेशं परमात्मानमव्ययम्

sūryakoṭipratīkāśaṁ sarvāvayavasundaram hayagrīvomahīśeśaṁ paramātmānamavyayam

radiant as ten million suns, beautiful in every limb — Hayagriva, the Lord even of the lords of the earth, the imperishable Supreme Self.

Verse 57 (garuda.1.34.57)

इति ते कथिता पूजा हयग्रीवस्य शङ्कर । यः पठेत्परया भक्त्या स गच्छेत्परमं पदम्

iti te kathitā pūjā hayagrīvasya śaṅkara yaḥ paṭhetparayā bhaktyā sa gacchetparamaṁ padam

O Shankara, thus has the worship of Hayagriva been declared to you. Whoever reads this with supreme devotion attains the supreme state.
