The Rite of Worshipping Sudarshana
Verse 1 (garuda.1.33.1)
।।रुद्र उवाच । सुदर्शनस्य पूजां मे वद शङ्खगदाधर । ग्रहरोगादिकं सर्वं यत्कृत्वा नाशमेति वै
rudra uvāca sudarśanasya pūjāṁ me vada śaṅkhagadādhara graharogādikaṁ sarvaṁ yatkṛtvā nāśameti vai
Rudra said: O bearer of the conch and mace, tell me the worship of Sudarshana, by performing which every malefic planetary affliction and disease certainly perishes.
Verse 2 (garuda.1.33.2)
हरिरुवाच । सुदर्शनस्य चक्रस्य श्रृणु पूजां वृषध्वज । स्नानमादौ प्रकुर्वीत पूजयेच्च हरिं तत
hariruvāca sudarśanasya cakrasya śrṛṇu pūjāṁ vṛṣadhvaja snānamādau prakurvīta pūjayecca hariṁ tata
Hari said: O bearer of the bull-banner, hear the worship of the discus Sudarshana. First one should bathe, and then worship Hari.
Verse 3 (garuda.1.33.3)
मूलमन्त्रेण वै न्यासं मूलमन्त्रं श्रृणुष्व च । सहस्रारं हुं फट् नमो मन्त्रः प्रणवपूर्वकः
mūlamantreṇa vai nyāsaṁ mūlamantraṁ śrṛṇuṣva ca sahasrāraṁ huṁ phaṭ namo mantraḥ praṇavapūrvakaḥ
One should perform the placement with the root-mantra; hear the root-mantra too — "sahasrara hum phat namah" — this mantra is preceded by the syllable Om.
Verse 4 (garuda.1.33.4)
कथितः सर्वदुष्टानां नाशको मन्त्रभेदकः । ध्यायेत्सुदर्शनं देवं हृदि पद्मेऽमले शुभे
kathitaḥ sarvaduṣṭānāṁ nāśako mantrabhedakaḥ dhyāyetsudarśanaṁ devaṁ hṛdi padme'male śubhe
It is declared to be the destroyer of all the wicked and the piercer of hostile mantras. One should meditate upon the God Sudarshana in the stainless, auspicious lotus of the heart.
Verse 5 (garuda.1.33.5)
शङ्कचक्रगदापद्मधरं सौम्यं किरीटिनम् । आवाह्य मण्डले देवं पूर्वोक्तविधिना हर
śaṅkacakragadāpadmadharaṁ saumyaṁ kirīṭinam āvāhya maṇḍale devaṁ pūrvoktavidhinā hara
One should meditate upon him, bearing conch, discus, mace, and lotus, gentle, crowned. O Hara, one should invoke the God into the mandala according to the previously described rite.
Verse 6 (garuda.1.33.6)
पूजयेद्गन्धपुष्पाद्यैरुपचारैर्महेश्वर । पूजयित्वा जपेन्मन्त्रं शतमष्टोत्तरं नरः
pūjayedgandhapuṣpādyairupacārairmaheśvara pūjayitvā japenmantraṁ śatamaṣṭottaraṁ naraḥ
O great Lord, one should worship with sandal-paste, flowers, and the other offerings. Having worshipped, a man should recite the mantra one hundred and eight times.
Verse 7 (garuda.1.33.7)
एवं यः कुरुते रुद्र ! चक्रस्यार्चनमुत्तमम् । सर्वरोगविनिर्मुक्तो विष्णुलोकं समाप्नुयात्
evaṁ yaḥ kurute rudra ! cakrasyārcanamuttamam sarvarogavinirmukto viṣṇulokaṁ samāpnuyāt
O Rudra, whoever thus performs this excellent worship of the discus becomes free of every disease and attains the world of Vishnu.
Verse 8 (garuda.1.33.8)
एतत्स्तोत्रं जपेत्पश्चात्सर्वव्याधिविनाशनम् । नमः सुदर्शनायैव सहस्रादित्यवर्चसे
etatstotraṁ japetpaścātsarvavyādhivināśanam namaḥ sudarśanāyaiva sahasrādityavarcase
Then one should recite this hymn, which destroys every ailment — "Salutation to Sudarshana, radiant as a thousand suns."
Verse 9 (garuda.1.33.9)
ज्वालामालाप्रदीप्ताय सहस्राराय चक्षुषे । सर्वदुष्टविनाशाय सर्वपातकमर्दिने
jvālāmālāpradīptāya sahasrārāya cakṣuṣe sarvaduṣṭavināśāya sarvapātakamardine
"To the one blazing with a garland of flames, of a thousand spokes, the very eye, the destroyer of all the wicked, the crusher of all sin."
Verse 10 (garuda.1.33.10)
सुचक्राय विचक्राय सर्वमन्त्रविभेदिने । प्रसवित्रे जगद्धात्रे जगद्विध्वंसिने नमः
sucakrāya vicakrāya sarvamantravibhedine prasavitre jagaddhātre jagadvidhvaṁsine namaḥ
"To Suchakra, Vichakra, the piercer of every hostile mantra. Salutation to the begetter of the world, the sustainer of the world, the destroyer of the world."
Verse 11 (garuda.1.33.11)
पालनार्थाय लोकानां दुष्टासुरविनाशिने । उग्राय चैव सौम्याय चण्डाय च नमोनमः
pālanārthāya lokānāṁ duṣṭāsuravināśine ugrāya caiva saumyāya caṇḍāya ca namonamaḥ
"To the one who exists for the protection of the worlds, the destroyer of wicked demons. To the fierce, the gentle, and the terrible one, salutation again and again."
Verse 12 (garuda.1.33.12)
नमश्चक्षुः स्वरूपाय संसारभयभेदिने । मायापञ्जरभेत्रे च शिवाय च नमोनमः
namaścakṣuḥ svarūpāya saṁsārabhayabhedine māyāpañjarabhetre ca śivāya ca namonamaḥ
"Salutation to the very form of the eye, the destroyer of the fear of worldly existence. To the piercer of the cage of maya, the auspicious one, salutation again and again."
Verse 13 (garuda.1.33.13)
ग्रहातिग्रहरूपाय ग्रहाणां पतये नमः । कालाय मृत्यवे चैव भीमाय च नमोनमः
grahātigraharūpāya grahāṇāṁ pataye namaḥ kālāya mṛtyave caiva bhīmāya ca namonamaḥ
"To the one who is a planet beyond the planets, the Lord of the planets, salutation. To Time, to Death, and to the terrible one, salutation again and again."
Verse 14 (garuda.1.33.14)
भक्तानुग्रहदात्रे च भक्तगोप्त्रे नमोनमः । विष्णुरूपाय शान्ताय चायुधानां धराय च
bhaktānugrahadātre ca bhaktagoptre namonamaḥ viṣṇurūpāya śāntāya cāyudhānāṁ dharāya ca
"To the one who bestows grace upon devotees, the guardian of devotees, salutation again and again. To the one of Vishnu's form, the tranquil one, the bearer of weapons."
Verse 15 (garuda.1.33.15)
विष्णुशस्त्राय चक्राय नमो भूयो नमोनमः । इति स्तोत्रं महापुण्यं चक्रस्य तव कीर्त्तितम्
viṣṇuśastrāya cakrāya namo bhūyo namonamaḥ iti stotraṁ mahāpuṇyaṁ cakrasya tava kīrttitam
"To the weapon of Vishnu, the discus, salutation again and yet again." Thus has this most sacred hymn of the discus been declared to you.
Verse 16 (garuda.1.33.16)
यः पठेत्परया भक्त्या विष्णुलोकं स गच्छति । चक्रपूजाविधिं यश्च पठेद्रुद्र जितेन्द्रियः । स पापं भस्मसात्कृत्वा विष्णुलोकाय कल्पते
yaḥ paṭhetparayā bhaktyā viṣṇulokaṁ sa gacchati cakrapūjāvidhiṁ yaśca paṭhedrudra jitendriyaḥ sa pāpaṁ bhasmasātkṛtvā viṣṇulokāya kalpate
Whoever reads it with supreme devotion goes to the world of Vishnu. O Rudra, whatever self-controlled person reads this rite of the discus's worship, having reduced his sins to ash, becomes fit for the world of Vishnu.
