Purvakhanda — Acharakanda · Chapter 32
The Rite of Worshipping the Five Principles
Verse 1 (garuda.1.32.1)
maheśvara uvāca pañcatattvārcanaṁ brūhi śaṁkhacakragadādhara ! yena vijñānamātreṇa naro yāti paraṁ padam
Maheshvara said: O bearer of the conch, discus, and mace, declare the worship of the five principles, by mere knowledge of which a man attains the supreme state.
Verse 2 (garuda.1.32.2)
hariruvāca pañcatattvārcanaṁ vakṣye tava śaṅkara suvrata maṅgalyaṁ maṅgalaṁ divyaṁ rahasyaṁ kāmadaṁ param
Hari said: O Shankara, O one of good vows, I shall declare to you the worship of the five principles — auspicious, bringer of good fortune, divine, secret, and supremely fulfilling of desire.
Verse 3 (garuda.1.32.3)
tacchṛṇuṣva mahādeva pavitraṁ kalināśanam eka evāvyayaḥ śāṁtaḥ paramātmā sanātanaḥ
O great God, hear that which is sacred and destroys the sins of the Kali age. There is but one imperishable, tranquil, eternal Supreme Self,
Verse 4 (garuda.1.32.4)
vāsudevo dhruvaḥ śuddhaḥ sarvavyāpī nirañjanaḥ sa eva māyāyā deva pañcadhā saṁsthito hariḥ
Vasudeva, unwavering, pure, all-pervading, taintless. That same Hari, O God, through maya, abides in five forms.
Verse 5 (garuda.1.32.5)
lokānugrahakṛdviṣṇuḥ sarvaduṣṭavināśanaḥ vāsudevasvarūpeṇa tathā saṅkarṣaṇena ca
Vishnu, who bestows grace upon the worlds and destroys all the wicked — in the form of Vasudeva, and likewise in the form of Sankarshana,
Verse 6 (garuda.1.32.6)
tathā pradyumnarūpeṇāniruddhākhyena ca sthitaḥ nārāyaṇasvarūpeṇa pañcadhā hyadvayaḥ sthitaḥ
and likewise abiding in the form of Pradyumna and in the form called Aniruddha, and in the form of Narayana — thus, though non-dual, he abides in five forms.
Verse 7 (garuda.1.32.7)
eteṣāṁ vācakānmaṁtrānetāñchṛṇu vṛṣadhvaja ! oṁ aṁ vāsudevāya namaḥ oṁ āṁ saṁkarṣaṇāya namaḥ oṁ aṁ pradyumnāya namaḥ oṁ aniruddhāya namaḥ oṁ oṁ nārāyaṇāya namaḥ
O bearer of the bull-banner, hear these mantras that express these five forms — "Om aṁ, salutation to Vasudeva. Om āṁ, salutation to Sankarshana. Om aṁ, salutation to Pradyumna. Om, salutation to Aniruddha. Om Om, salutation to Narayana."
Verse 8 (garuda.1.32.8)
pañca maṁtrāḥ samākhyātā devānāṁ vācakāstava sarvapāpaharāḥ puṇyāḥ sarvarogavināśanāḥ
These five mantras, expressing these gods, have been declared to you. They destroy every sin, are sacred, and destroy every disease.
Verse 9 (garuda.1.32.9)
adhunā saṁpravakṣyāmi pañcatattvārcanaṁ śubham vidhinā yena karttavyaṁ yairvā maṁtraiśca śaṅkara !
Now I shall declare that auspicious worship of the five principles — by what rite, and with what mantras, O Shankara, it should be performed.
Verse 10 (garuda.1.32.10)
ādau snānaṁ prakurvīta snātvā sandhyāṁ samācaret arcanāgāramāsādya prakṣālyāṅghryādikaṁ tathā
First one should bathe, and having bathed, perform the twilight rite. Having reached the place of worship, and likewise having washed the feet and the rest,
Verse 11 (garuda.1.32.11)
ācamyopaviśetprājño baddhāsanamabhīpsitam śoṣaṇādi tataḥ kuryyād aṁ kṣauṁ ramiti maṁtrakaiḥ
having sipped water, the wise one should sit in the desired posture. Then one should perform desiccation and the rest with the mantras "aṁ kṣauṁ raṁ" and the like.
Verse 12 (garuda.1.32.12)
sāmānyaṁ kaṭhinīkṛtya cāṇḍamutpādayettataḥ vibhidyāṇḍaṁ tato hyaṇḍe bhāvayetparameśvaram
Having hardened the common body, one should then generate the egg. Having split the egg, one should contemplate the Supreme Lord within it.
Verse 13 (garuda.1.32.13)
vāsudevaṁ jagannāthaṁ pītakauśeyavāsasam sahastrādityasaṅkāśaṁ sphuranmakarakuṇḍalam
Vasudeva, Lord of the universe, clad in yellow silk garments, radiant as a thousand suns, wearing shining crocodile-shaped earrings —
Verse 14 (garuda.1.32.14)
ātmano hṛdi padme tu dhyāyettu parameśvaram tataḥ saṅkarṣaṇaṁ devamātmānaṁ cintayetprabhum
One should meditate upon the Supreme Lord in the lotus of one's own heart. Then one should contemplate the lord Sankarshana as one's own self.
Verse 15 (garuda.1.32.15)
pradyumnamaniruddhaṁ ca śrīmannārāyaṇaṁ tataḥ iṁdrādīṁśca surāṁstasmāddevadevātsamutthitān
Then, Pradyumna, Aniruddha, and the glorious Narayana, and Indra and the other gods, arisen from that God of gods,
Verse 16 (garuda.1.32.16)
cintayecca tato nyāsaṁ kuryyā dvai kārayordvayoḥ vyāpakaṁ mūlamaṁtreṇa cāṅganyāsaṁ tataḥ param
one should contemplate. Then, upon both hands, one should perform the pervasive placement with the root-mantra, and thereafter the limb-placement.
Verse 17 (garuda.1.32.17)

O Rudra, these mantras have been declared to you in brief. Worship should be performed in the mandala marked with the swastika and the rest.
Verse 20 (garuda.1.32.20)

"Om, salutation to the lotus." Having performed the limb-placement, one should display all the mudras. Having meditated upon one's own self as Vasudeva, the Supreme Lord,
Verse 21 (garuda.1.32.21)
āsanaṁ pūjayetpaścādāvāhya vidhivannaraḥ dvāre dhāturvidhātuśca pūjā kāryyā vṛṣadhvaja
a man should then invoke him and duly worship the seat. O bearer of the bull-banner, at the doorway, Dhata and Vidhata should be worshipped.
Verse 22 (garuda.1.32.22)

garuḍaṁ pūjayedagre vāsudevasya śaṅkara śaṅkhādipadmaparyyantaṁ madhyadeśe prapūjayet
O Shankara, one should worship Garuda before Vasudeva. From the conch up to the lotus, one should duly worship in the middle region.
Verse 23 (garuda.1.32.23)

Dharma, Knowledge, Dispassion, and Lordship, from the east; in the south-east and the other quarters, one should worship the four beginning with non-dharma.
Verse 24 (garuda.1.32.24)

In the midst of the three mandalas, the seat's position has been declared. In the petals of the lotus, east and the rest, Sankarshana and the others are to be worshipped.
Verse 25 (garuda.1.32.25)

O Shankara, the powers of the God of gods are worshipped in the east and the other quarters. Indra and the other guardians of the quarters, situated in the east and the rest, are to be worshipped.
Verse 27 (garuda.1.32.27)
adho nāga tadūrddhvantu brahmāṇaṁ pūjayetsudhīḥ iti sthānakramo jñeyo maṇḍale śaṅkara tvayā
Below, the serpent Shesha; and above him, the wise should worship Brahma. O Shankara, thus should you know the order of placement in the mandala.
Verse 28 (garuda.1.32.28)
āvāhya maṇḍale devaṁ kṛtvā nyāsaṁ tu tasya ca mudrāṁ pradarśya pādyadīndadyānmūlena śaṅkara
Having invoked the God into the mandala and performed the placement upon him, and having displayed the mudra, O Shankara, one should offer the padya and the rest with the root-mantra.
Verse 29 (garuda.1.32.29)

Bathing, clothing, sipping-water, sandal-paste, flowers, incense, lamp, food-offering, sipping-water, salutation, and circumambulation — O Shankara, one should perform all these with the root-mantra, and offer the recitation as well.
Verse 30 (garuda.1.32.30)
idaṁ stotraṁ japetpaścādvāsudevamanusmaran oṁ namo vāsudevāya namaḥ sakarṣaṇāya ca
Then, calling Vasudeva to mind, one should recite this hymn — "Om, salutation to Vasudeva; salutation to Sankarshana."
Verse 31 (garuda.1.32.31)
pradyumnāyādidevāyāniruddhāya namonamaḥ namo nārāyaṇāyaiva narāyaṇāṁ pataye namaḥ
"Salutation again and again to Pradyumna, the primal God, and to Aniruddha. Salutation to Narayana; salutation to the Lord of men."
Verse 32 (garuda.1.32.32)
narapūjyāya kīrtyāya stutyāya varadāya ca anādinidhanāyaiva purāṇāya namonamaḥ
"To the one worthy of men's worship, of glory, of praise, the giver of boons. To the one without beginning or end, the ancient one, salutation again and again."
Verse 33 (garuda.1.32.33)

sṛṣṭisaṁhārakartre ca brahmaṇaḥ pataye namaḥ mano vai vedavedyāya śaṅkhacakradharāya ca
"To the maker of creation and dissolution, the Lord of Brahma, salutation. To the one knowable through the mind and the Vedas, the bearer of conch and discus."
Verse 34 (garuda.1.32.34)
kalikalmaṣahartre ca sureśāya namonamaḥ saṁsāravṛkṣacchetre ca māyābhetre namonamaḥ
"To the remover of the sins of the Kali age, the Lord of the gods, salutation again and again. To the feller of the tree of worldly existence, the piercer of maya, salutation again and again."
Verse 35 (garuda.1.32.35)
bahurūpāya tīrthāya triguṇāyāguṇāya ca brahmaviṣṇavīśarūpaya mokṣadāya namonamaḥ
"To the one of many forms, the sacred ford itself, possessed of the three qualities yet beyond qualities. To the one whose form is Brahma, Vishnu, and Ishvara, the giver of liberation, salutation again and again."
Verse 36 (garuda.1.32.36)
mokṣadvārāya dharmāya nirmāṇāya namonamaḥ sarvakāmapradāyaiva parabrahmasvarūpiṇe
"To the gateway of liberation, to dharma, to the maker, salutation again and again. To the one who grants every desire, the very form of the Supreme Brahman."
Verse 37 (garuda.1.32.37)
saṁsārasāgare ghore nimagnaṁ māṁ samuddhara tvadanyo nāsti deveśa nāsti trātā jagatprabho
"Raise me up, submerged in the terrible ocean of worldly existence. There is none other than you, O Lord of gods; there is no other protector, O Lord of the universe."
Verse 38 (garuda.1.32.38)
tvāmeva sarvagaṁ viṣṇuṁ gato'haṁ śaraṇaṁ gataḥ jñānadīpapradānena tamomuktaṁ prakāśaya
"You alone are the all-pervading Vishnu; I have come to you for refuge. By granting the lamp of knowledge, free me from darkness and illuminate me."
Verse 39 (garuda.1.32.39)
evaṁ stuvīta deveśaṁ sarvakleśavināśanam anyaiścavaidikeḥ stotraiḥ stutvā vai nīlalohita
Thus one should praise the Lord of gods, the destroyer of every affliction. O blue-and-red one, having also praised him with other Vedic hymns,
Verse 40 (garuda.1.32.40)
pañcatattvasamāyuktaṁ dhyāyodviṣṇuṁ naro hṛdi visarjayattatā devamiti pūjā prakīrtitā
a man should meditate in his heart upon Vishnu, joined with the five principles. Then one should take leave of the deity — thus has this worship been declared.
Verse 41 (garuda.1.32.41)
sarvakāmapradā śreṣṭhā vāsudevasya śaṅkara etatpūjanamātreṇa kṛtakṛtyo bhavennaraḥ
O Shankara, this is the most excellent worship of Vasudeva, granting every desire. By this worship alone, a man becomes fulfilled.
Verse 42 (garuda.1.32.42)
idaṁ ca yaḥ paṭhedrudra pañcatattvārcanaṁ naraḥ śrṛṇuyācchravāyedvāpi viṣṇulokaṁ sa gacchati
O Rudra, whatever man reads this worship of the five principles, hears it, or causes it to be heard, goes to the world of Vishnu.
