Chapter 30All chaptersChapter 32

Verse 1 (garuda.1.31.1)

rudra uvāca bhūya evaṁ jagannātha pūjāṁ kathaya me prabho yayā tareyaṁ saṁsārasāgaraṁ hyatidustaram

Rudra said: O Lord of the universe, O Lord, again tell me that worship by which I may cross this ocean of worldly existence, so very hard to cross.

Verse 2 (garuda.1.31.2)

hariruvāca arccanaṁ viṣṇudevasya vakṣyāmi vṛṣabhadhvaja tacchṛṇuṣva mahābhāga bhuktimuktipradaṁ śubham

Hari said: O bearer of the bull-banner, I shall declare the worship of the God Vishnu. O greatly fortunate one, hear that auspicious worship, which grants both enjoyment and liberation.

Verse 3 (garuda.1.31.3)

kṛtvā snānaṁ tataḥ sandhyāṁ tato yāgagṛhaṁ vrajet prakṣālya pāṇī pādau ca ācamya ca viśeṣataḥ

Having bathed, and then performed the twilight rite, one should go to the sacrificial hall. Having washed the hands and feet, and having sipped water in the prescribed manner,

Verse 4 (garuda.1.31.4)

mūlamantraṁ samastaṁ tu hastayorvyāpakaṁ nyaset mūlamantraṁ ca devasya śrṛṇu rudra vadāmi te

one should perform the pervasive placement of the entire root-mantra upon both hands. O Rudra, listen to the root-mantra of the God; I shall tell it to you.

Verse 5 (garuda.1.31.5)

oṁ śrīṁ hrīṁ śrīdharāya viṣṇave namaḥ ayaṁ mantraḥ sureśasya viṣṇorīśasya vācakaḥ

"Om shrim hrim, salutation to Shridhara Vishnu." This mantra expresses the Lord of gods, Vishnu, the Lord.

Verse 6 (garuda.1.31.6)

sarvavyādhiharaścaiva sarvagrahaharastathā sarvapāpaharaścaiva bhaktimuktipradāyakaḥ

It destroys every disease, and likewise every malefic planetary affliction; it destroys every sin, and grants both devotion and liberation.

Verse 7 (garuda.1.31.7)

aṅganyāsaṁ tataḥ kuyyāṁdebhirmantraurvicakṣaṇaḥ oṁ hāṁ hṛdayāya namaḥ oṁ hīṁ śirase svāhā oṁ hūṁ śikhāyai vaṣaṭ oṁ haiṁ kavacāya huṁ oṁ hauṁ netratrayāya vauṣaṭ oṁ haḥ astrāya phaṭ

Then the wise practitioner should perform the limb-placement with these mantras — "Om hāṁ, to the heart, salutation. Om hīṁ, to the head, svaha. Om hūṁ, to the crest, vashat. Om haiṁ, to the armor, hum. Om hauṁ, to the three eyes, vaushat. Om haḥ, to the weapon, phat."

Verse 8 (garuda.1.31.8)

iti mantraḥ samākhyāto mayā te prabhaviṣṇunā nyāsaṁ kṛtvātmano mudrāṁ darśayedvijitātmavān

Thus has this mantra been declared to you by me, mighty Vishnu. Having performed the placement, the self-controlled one should display his own mudra.

Verse 9 (garuda.1.31.9)

tato dhyāyetparaṁ viṣṇu hrṛtkoṭarasamāśritam śaṅkhacakrasamāyuktaṁ kundendudhavalaṁ harim

Then one should meditate upon the supreme Vishnu, dwelling in the cavity of the heart — Hari, joined with conch and discus, white as the kunda flower and the moon.

Verse 10 (garuda.1.31.10)

śrīvatsakaustubhayutaṁ vanamālāsamanvitam ratnahārakirīṭena saṁyuktaṁ parameśvaram

One should meditate upon him, joined with Shrivatsa and Kaustubha, adorned with the forest-garland, and joined with a jeweled necklace and crown — the Supreme Lord.

Verse 11 (garuda.1.31.11)

ahaṁ viṣṇuriti dhyātvā kṛtvā vai śodhanādikam yaṁ kṣauṁ ramiti bījaiśca kaṭhinīkṛtya nāmabhiḥ

Meditating "I myself am Vishnu," and having performed the purification and the rest, one should harden the body with the seed-syllables "yaṁ kṣauṁ raṁ" and the names.

Verse 12 (garuda.1.31.12)

aṇḍamutpādya ca tataḥ praṇavenaiva bhedayet tatra pūrvoktarūpaṁ tu bhāvayitvā vṛṣadhvaja

Then, having generated the egg, one should split it open with the syllable Om alone. There, O bearer of the bull-banner, contemplating the form already described,

Verse 13 (garuda.1.31.13)

ātmapūjāṁ tataḥ kuryyādrandhapuṣpādibhiḥ śubhaiḥ āvāhya pūjayetsarvā devatā āsanasya yāḥ

one should then perform self-worship with auspicious sandal-paste, flowers, and the rest. Having invoked them, one should worship all the deities of the seat.

Verse 14 (garuda.1.31.14)

mantrairebhirmahādeva tanmantraṁ śrṛṇu śaṁkara viṣṇavāsanadevatā āgacchata

O great God, with these mantras one should worship — O Shankara, hear that mantra. "Deities of Vishnu's seat, come."

Verse 15 (garuda.1.31.15)

gandhapuṣpādibhistvetairmantrairetāstu pūjayet pūjayitvā tato viṣṇuṁ sṛṣṭisaṁhārakāriṇam

With sandal-paste, flowers, and the rest, one should worship these deities with these very mantras. Then one should worship Vishnu, the maker of creation and dissolution.

Verse 17 (garuda.1.31.17)

āvāhya maṇḍale rudra pūjayetparameśvaram anena vidhinā rudra sarvapāpaharaṁ param

O Rudra, having invoked him into the mandala, one should worship the Supreme Lord. O Rudra, by this rite, this supreme worship destroys every sin.

Verse 18 (garuda.1.31.18)

Just as upon oneself, so upon the deity too, one should first perform the placement. Then one should display the mudra, and thereafter offer arghya and the rest.

Then one should perform the bathing, offer clothing, and then offer sipping-water. One should offer sandal-paste, flowers, incense, and a lamp, and then offer the cooked food.

Verse 20 (garuda.1.31.20)

pradakṣiṇaṁ tato japyaṁ tatastasminsarpayet aṅgādīnāṁ svamantraiśca pūjāṁ kurvīta sādhakaḥ

Then one should perform circumambulation, then recitation, and then offer it into that. The practitioner should worship the limbs and the rest with their own respective mantras.

Verse 21 (garuda.1.31.21)

With the God's root-mantra — O bearer of the bull-banner, know it thus. O three-eyed one, now hear the mantras that I am about to declare.

ebhimantrairmahādeva pūjyā aṁgādayo naraiḥ pūjayitvā mahātmānaṁ viṣṇuṁ brahmasvarūpiṇam

O great God, with these very mantras men should worship the limbs and the rest. Having worshipped the great-souled Vishnu, the very form of Brahman,

Verse 24 (garuda.1.31.24)

stuvīta cānayā stutyā paramātmānamavyayam viṣṇave devadevāya namo vai prabhaviṣṇave

one should praise the imperishable Supreme Self with this hymn. "Salutation to Vishnu, God of gods; salutation to mighty Vishnu."

Verse 25 (garuda.1.31.25)

stutvā dhyāyetsvahṛdaye brahmarūpiṇamavyayam evaṁ tu pūjayedviṣṇuṁ mūlamantreṇa śaṁkara

Having praised him, one should meditate in one's own heart upon the imperishable, whose form is Brahman. O Shankara, thus should Vishnu be worshipped with the root-mantra.

Verse 31 (garuda.1.31.31)

This is a supreme secret, most confidential, granting both enjoyment and liberation. O Hara, whatever learned man, devoted to Vishnu, reads this, hears it, or causes it to be heard, goes to the world of Vishnu.
