The Mantra, Worship, and Offering to Durga

Verse 1 (garuda.1.38.1)

।।हरिरुवाच । नवम्यादौ यजेद्दुर्गां ह्रीं दुर्गे रक्षिणीति च । मातर्मातर्वरे दुर्गे सर्वकामार्थसाधनि

hariruvāca navamyādau yajeddurgāṁ hrīṁ durge rakṣiṇīti ca mātarmātarvare durge sarvakāmārthasādhani

Hari said: On the ninth lunar day and the like, one should worship Durga — "Hrim, O Durga, the protectress!" "O Mother, O Mother, O boon-granting Durga, accomplisher of every desire and aim!"

Verse 2 (garuda.1.38.2)

अनेन बलिदानेन सर्वकामान्प्रयच्छ मे । गौरी काली उमा दुर्गा भद्रा कान्तिः सरस्वती

anena balidānena sarvakāmānprayaccha me gaurī kālī umā durgā bhadrā kāntiḥ sarasvatī

"By this offering, grant me all my desires." Gauri, Kali, Uma, Durga, Bhadra, Kanti, Sarasvati,

Verse 3 (garuda.1.38.3)

मङ्गला विजया लक्ष्मीः शिवा नारायणी क्रमात् । मार्गे तृतीयामारभ्य पूजयेन्न वियोगभाक्

maṅgalā vijayā lakṣmīḥ śivā nārāyaṇī kramāt mārge tṛtīyāmārabhya pūjayenna viyogabhāk

Mangala, Vijaya, Lakshmi, Shiva, Narayani — beginning from the third day of the month of Margashirsha, one should worship these in order, without interruption.

Verse 4 (garuda.1.38.4)

अष्टादशभुजां खेटकं घण्टां दर्पणं तर्जनीम् । धनुर्ध्वजं डमरुकं परशुं पाशमेव च

aṣṭādaśabhujāṁ kheṭakaṁ ghaṇṭāṁ darpaṇaṁ tarjanīm dhanurdhvajaṁ ḍamarukaṁ paraśuṁ pāśameva ca

One should meditate upon the eighteen-armed goddess, bearing a shield, a bell, a mirror, the threatening gesture, a bow, a banner, a small drum, an axe, and a noose.

Verse 5 (garuda.1.38.5)

शक्तिमुशलशूलानि कपालशरकाङ्कुशान् । वज्र चक्रं शलाकां च अष्टादशभुजां स्मरेत्

śaktimuśalaśūlāni kapālaśarakāṅkuśān vajra cakraṁ śalākāṁ ca aṣṭādaśabhujāṁ smaret

A spear, a pestle, a trident, a skull-cup, an arrow, a goad, a thunderbolt, a discus, and a spike — one should call to mind the eighteen-armed goddess bearing these.

Verse 6 (garuda.1.38.6)

मन्त्रः श्रीभगवत्याश्च प्रवक्ष्यामि जपादिकम्

mantraḥ śrībhagavatyāśca pravakṣyāmi japādikam

Now I shall declare the mantra of the blessed Goddess, and the manner of its recitation.

Verse 7 (garuda.1.38.7)

oṁ namo bhagavati cāmuṇḍe śmaśānavāsini kapālahaste mahāpretasamārūḍhe mahāvimānamālākule kālarātri bahugaṇaparivṛte mahāmukhe bahubhuje sughaṇṭāḍamarukiṅkiṇīke aṭṭāṭṭahāse kilikili huṁ sarvanādaśabdabahule gajacarmaprāvṛtaśarīre rudhiramāṁsadigdhe lolagrajihve mahārākṣasi raudradaṁṣṭrākarāle bhīmāṭṭāṭṭahāse sphuritavidyutsamaprabhe calacala karālanetre hilihili lalajjihve hrauṁ hrīṁ bhṛkuṭimukhi oṁ kārabhadrāsane kapālamālāveṣṭite jaṭāmukuṭaśaśāṁkadhāriṇi aṭṭāṭṭahāse kilikili huṁhuṁ daṁṣṭrāghorāṁdhakāriṇi sarvavighnavināśini idaṁ karma sādhaya sādhaya śīghraṁ kurukuru kahakaha aṅkuśe samanupraveśaya vargaṁvargaṁ (vaṁgavaṁga) kampayakampaya calacala cālayacālaya rudhiramāṁsamadyapriye hanahana kuṭṭakuṭṭa chindachinda mārayamāraya anubūmaanubūma vajraśarīraṁ sādhayasādhaya trailokyagatamapi duṣṭamaduṣṭaṁ vā gṛhītamagṛhītam āveśayaāveśaya krāmayakramaya nṛtyanṛtya bandhabandha valgavalga koṭarākṣi urddhvakeśi ulūkavadane karakiṁkiṇi karaṁkamālādhāriṇi dahadaha pacapaca gṛhṇagahṇa maṇḍalamadhye praveśayapraveśaya kiṁ vilambasi brahmasatyena viṣṇusatyena ṛṣisatyena rudrasatyena āveśayaāveśaya kilikili khilikhili milimili cilicili vikṛtarūpadhāriṇi kṛṣṇabhujaṅga veṣṭitaśarīra sarvagrahāveśini pralambhoṣṭhi bhrūmagnanāsike vikaṭamukhi kapilajaṭe brāhmi bhaṁjabhaṁja jvalajvala kālamukhi khalakhala kharakharaḥ pātayapā taya raktākṣi dhūrṇāpayadhūrṇāpaya bhūmiṁ pātayapātaya śiro gṛhṇagṛhṇa cakṣurmolayamīlaya bhaṁjabhaṁja pādau gṛhṇagṛhṇa mudrāṁ sphoṭayasphoṭaya huṁ hūṁ phaṭ vidāraya vidāraya triśūlena bhedayabhedaya vajreṇa hanahana daṇḍena tāḍayatāḍaya cekraṇa chedayachedaya śaktinā bhedayabhedaya daṁṣṭrayā daṁśayadaṁśaya kīlakena kīlaya kīlaya karttārikayā pāṭayapāṭaya aṅkuśena gṛhṇagṛhṇa brahmāṇi ehiehi māheśvari ehiehi kaumāri ehiehi vārāhi ehiehi aindri ehiehi cāmuṇḍe ehiehi vaiṣṇāvi ehiehi himavantacāriṇi ehiehi kailāsavārīṇi ehiehi paramantraṁ chindhichindhi kilikili bimbe aghore ghorarūpiṇi cāmuṇḍe rurukrodhāṁdhaviniḥ) sṛte asurakṣayaṁkari ākāśagāmini pāśena bandhabandha samaye tiṣṭhatiṣṭha maṇḍalaṁ praveśayapraveśaya pātayapātaya gṛhṇagṛhṇa mukhaṁ bandhabandha cakṣurbandhayabandhaya hṛdayaṁ bandhabandha hastapādau ca bandhabandha duṣṭagrahān sarvān bandhabandha diśāṁ bandhabandha vidiśāṁ bandhabandha ūrdhvaṁ bandhabandha adhastād bandhabandha bhasmanā pānīyena mṛtikayā sarṣapairvā āveśayaāveśaya pātayapātaya cāmuṇḍe kilikili vicchehrīṁ(huṁ) phaṭ svāh

"Om, salutation to the blessed Chamunda! O dweller of the cremation ground! Bearing a skull in hand! Mounted upon a great corpse! Encircled by garlands of great celestial cars! O Night of Death! Surrounded by many hosts! Of vast mouth, many-armed! Bearing a beautiful bell, drum, and anklet-bells! Roaring with laughter, kilikili, hum! Filled with every sound and cry! Her body clad in elephant hide, smeared with blood and flesh, of restless tongue! Great demoness, terrible with fierce fangs, roaring with fearsome laughter, radiant as flashing lightning! Move, move! Of terrible eyes, hilihili, of lolling tongue! Hraum hrim! Her face knit in a frown, seated on the auspicious seat of Om, wreathed with a garland of skulls, bearing the crescent moon in her crown of matted hair! Roaring with laughter, kilikili, hum hum, her fangs of dreadful darkness, destroyer of every obstacle! Accomplish, accomplish this task, quickly, quickly, do it, do it, kaha kaha! With the goad, make her enter, enter, shake, shake, move, move, agitate, agitate! O lover of blood, flesh, and wine! Slay, slay, crush, crush, cut, cut, kill, kill! Perfect, perfect this thunderbolt-body! Whether present anywhere in the three worlds, wicked or not, seized or not — make her enter, enter, draw, draw, dance, dance, bind, bind, leap, leap! O hollow-eyed one, of upstanding hair, owl-faced, bearing anklet-bells and a garland of skulls in hand! Burn, burn, cook, cook, seize, seize! Make her enter the mandala, enter — why do you delay? By the truth of Brahma, of Vishnu, of the sages, of Rudra — make her enter, enter! Kilikili, khilikhili, milimili, chilichili! Of distorted form, her body wound with a black serpent, entering into every malefic planet, of full lips, nose bent down to the brows, of grotesque face, of tawny matted hair! O Brahmi! Break, break, blaze, blaze! O death-faced one, khalakhala, kharakhara! Fell, fell! O red-eyed one, whirl, whirl, cast down upon the ground, cast down, seize the head, seize, close the eyes, close, break the feet, break, seize, seize, shatter the gesture, shatter! Hum hum phat! Rend, rend, pierce with the trident, pierce, slay with the thunderbolt, slay, strike with the staff, strike, cut with the discus, cut, pierce with the spear, pierce, bite with the fangs, bite, nail down with the peg, nail down, slash with the shears, slash, seize with the goad, seize! O Brahmi, come, come! O Maheshvari, come, come! O Kaumari, come, come! O Varahi, come, come! O Aindri, come, come! O Chamunda, come, come! O Vaishnavi, come, come! O wanderer of the Himalaya, come, come! O wanderer of Kailasa, come, come! Cut, cut the enemy's spell! Kilikili! O image-formed one, O Aghora, of dreadful form, O Chamunda, risen from wrath and darkness, destroyer of demons, traveler of the sky! Bind, bind with the noose! Stand fast, stand fast in the appointed time! Make her enter the mandala, enter, fell, fell, seize, seize! Bind the mouth, bind, bind the eyes, bind, bind the heart, bind, bind the hands and feet, bind, bind every malefic planet, bind, bind the quarters, bind, bind the intermediate quarters, bind, bind above, bind, bind below, bind! With ash, with water, with clay, or with mustard-seed, make her enter, enter, fell, fell! O Chamunda! Kilikili! Vicche! Hrim phat svaha!"

Verse 8 (garuda.1.38.8)

अष्टोत्तरपदानां हि माला मन्त्रमयी जपः । एकैक्रपदमष्टसहस्त्रधा त्रिमधुराक्ततिलाष्टसहस्रहोमः

aṣṭottarapadānāṁ hi mālā mantramayī japaḥ ekaikrapadamaṣṭasahastradhā trimadhurāktatilāṣṭasahasrahomaḥ

This garland of mantras, of a hundred and eight words, is for recitation. Each word should be recited eight thousand times; one should perform the fire-offering eight thousand times with sesame seeds moistened with the three sweets.

Verse 9 (garuda.1.38.9)

महामांसेन-त्रिमधुराक्तेन अष्टोत्तरसह्स्रं च एकैकं च पदं यजेत् । तिलांस्त्रिमधुराक्तांश्च सहस्रं चाष्ट होमयेत्

mahāmāṁsena-trimadhurāktena aṣṭottarasahsraṁ ca ekaikaṁ ca padaṁ yajet tilāṁstrimadhurāktāṁśca sahasraṁ cāṣṭa homayet

With great flesh moistened with the three sweets, one should worship each word one thousand and eight times. One should offer eight thousand oblations of sesame seeds moistened with the three sweets.

Verse 10 (garuda.1.38.10)

महामांसं त्रिमधुरादथ वा सर्वकर्मकृत् । वारिसर्षपभस्मादिक्षेपाद्युद्धादिके जयः

mahāmāṁsaṁ trimadhurādatha vā sarvakarmakṛt vārisarṣapabhasmādikṣepādyuddhādike jayaḥ

Great flesh, or, alternatively, the three sweets — the oblation accomplishes every task. By the scattering of water, mustard-seed, ash, and the like, victory is obtained in battle and the like.

Verse 11 (garuda.1.38.11)

अष्टाविंशभुजा ध्येया अष्टादशभुजाथवा । द्वादशाष्टभुजा वापि ध्येया वापि चतुर्भुजा

aṣṭāviṁśabhujā dhyeyā aṣṭādaśabhujāthavā dvādaśāṣṭabhujā vāpi dhyeyā vāpi caturbhujā

One may meditate upon her as having twenty-eight arms, or eighteen arms, or twelve or eight arms, or even, alternatively, four arms.

Verse 12 (garuda.1.38.12)

असिखेटान्वितौ हस्तौ गदादण्डयुतौ परौ । शरचापयुतौ चान्यौ खड्गमुद्ररसंयुतौ

asikheṭānvitau hastau gadādaṇḍayutau parau śaracāpayutau cānyau khaḍgamudrarasaṁyutau

Two hands holding a sword and shield, another two a mace and staff, another two an arrow and bow, another two a sword and seal-gesture,

Verse 13 (garuda.1.38.13)

खंखघण्टान्वितौ चान्यौ ध्वजदण्डयुतौ परौ । अन्यौ परशुचक्राढ्यौ डमरुदर्पणान्वितौ

khaṁkhaghaṇṭānvitau cānyau dhvajadaṇḍayutau parau anyau paraśucakrāḍhyau ḍamarudarpaṇānvitau

another two a sword and bell, another two a banner and staff, another two an axe and discus, another two a small drum and mirror,

Verse 14 (garuda.1.38.14)

शक्तिहस्ताश्रितौ चान्यौ रटोणी मुसलान्वितौ । पाशतोमरसंयुक्तौ ढक्रापणवसंयुतौ

śaktihastāśritau cānyau raṭoṇī musalānvitau pāśatomarasaṁyuktau ḍhakrāpaṇavasaṁyutau

another two holding a spear and a pestle, another two a noose and a javelin, another two a small and a large drum,

Verse 15 (garuda.1.38.15)

तर्जयन्ती परेणैव अन्यं कलकलध्वनिम् । अभयस्वस्तिकाद्यौ च महिषघ्नी च सिंहगा

tarjayantī pareṇaiva anyaṁ kalakaladhvanim abhayasvastikādyau ca mahiṣaghnī ca siṁhagā

with one hand showing the threatening gesture, with another making a resounding cry, with the gestures of fearlessness and auspiciousness, the slayer of the buffalo-demon, mounted upon a lion —

Verse 16 (garuda.1.38.16)

जय त्वं किल भूतेशे सर्वभूतसमावृते । रक्ष मां निजभूतेभ्यो बलिं गृह्ण नमोऽस्तु ते

jaya tvaṁ kila bhūteśe sarvabhūtasamāvṛte rakṣa māṁ nijabhūtebhyo baliṁ gṛhṇa namo'stu te

"Victory to you, O mistress of spirits, surrounded by all beings. Protect me from your own spirits. Accept this offering; salutation be to you."
