The Manner of Worshipping the Sun

Verse 1 (garuda.1.39.1)

।।रुद्र उवाच । पुनर्देवार्चनं ब्रूहि संक्षेपेण जनार्दन । सूर्य्यस्य विष्णुरूपस्य भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदायकम्

rudra uvāca punardevārcanaṁ brūhi saṁkṣepeṇa janārdana sūryyasya viṣṇurūpasya bhuktimuktipradāyakam

Rudra said: O Janardana, again declare in brief the worship of a god — of the Sun, the form of Vishnu, which grants both enjoyment and liberation.

Verse 2 (garuda.1.39.2)

।।वासुदेव उवाच । श्रृणु सूर्य्यस्य रुद्र त्वं पुनर्वक्ष्यामि पूजनम् । ॐ उच्चैः श्रवसे नमः ॐ अरुणाय नमः । ॐ दण्डिने नमः । ॐ पिङ्गलाय नमः । एते द्वारे प्रपूज्या वै एपिर्मन्त्रैर्वृषध्वज

vāsudeva uvāca śrṛṇu sūryyasya rudra tvaṁ punarvakṣyāmi pūjanam oṁ uccaiḥ śravase namaḥ oṁ aruṇāya namaḥ oṁ daṇḍine namaḥ oṁ piṅgalāya namaḥ ete dvāre prapūjyā vai epirmantrairvṛṣadhvaja

Vasudeva said: Listen, O Rudra, I shall again declare the worship of the Sun. "Om, salutation to Uchchaihshrava. Om, salutation to Aruna. Om, salutation to Dandi. Om, salutation to Pingala." O bearer of the bull-banner, with these very mantras they should be worshipped at the doorway.

Verse 3 (garuda.1.39.3)

ॐ अं प्रभूताय नमः । इमं तु पूजयेन्मध्ये प्रभूतामलसञ्ज्ञकम् । ॐ अं विमलाय नमः । ॐ अं साराय नमः । ॐ अं आधाराय नमः । ॐ अं परममुखाय नमः । इत्याग्नेयादिकोणएषु पूज्या वै विमलादयः

oṁ aṁ prabhūtāya namaḥ imaṁ tu pūjayenmadhye prabhūtāmalasañjñakam oṁ aṁ vimalāya namaḥ oṁ aṁ sārāya namaḥ oṁ aṁ ādhārāya namaḥ oṁ aṁ paramamukhāya namaḥ ityāgneyādikoṇaeṣu pūjyā vai vimalādayaḥ

"Om aṁ, salutation to Prabhuta" — this one should worship in the middle, known by the name Prabhuta-Amala. "Om aṁ, salutation to Vimala. Om aṁ, salutation to Sara. Om aṁ, salutation to Adhara. Om aṁ, salutation to Paramamukhi" — thus, in the south-east and the other corners, Vimala and the rest are to be worshipped.

Verse 4 (garuda.1.39.4)

ॐ पद्माय नमः । ॐ कर्णिकायै नमः । मघ्ये तु पूजयेद्रुद्र पूर्वादिषु तथैव च । दीप्ताद्याः पूजयेन्मध्ये पूजयेत्सर्वतोमुखीः । ॐ वां(रां) दीप्तायै नमः । ॐ वीं (रीं) सूक्ष्मायै नमः । ॐ वूं (रूं भद्रायै नमः । ॐ वैं (रैं) जयायै नमः । ॐ वौं (रौं) विभूत्यै नमः । ॐ वं (रं) अघोरायै नमः । ॐ वं (रं) वैद्युतायै नमः । ॐ वः (रः) विजयायै नमः । ॐ रो सर्वतोमुख्यै नमः

oṁ padmāya namaḥ oṁ karṇikāyai namaḥ maghye tu pūjayedrudra pūrvādiṣu tathaiva ca dīptādyāḥ pūjayenmadhye pūjayetsarvatomukhīḥ oṁ vāṁ(rāṁ) dīptāyai namaḥ oṁ vīṁ (rīṁ) sūkṣmāyai namaḥ oṁ vūṁ (rūṁ bhadrāyai namaḥ oṁ vaiṁ (raiṁ) jayāyai namaḥ oṁ vauṁ (rauṁ) vibhūtyai namaḥ oṁ vaṁ (raṁ) aghorāyai namaḥ oṁ vaṁ (raṁ) vaidyutāyai namaḥ oṁ vaḥ (raḥ) vijayāyai namaḥ oṁ ro sarvatomukhyai namaḥ

"Om, salutation to the lotus. Om, salutation to the pericarp." O Rudra, in the middle, and likewise in the east and the other quarters, one should worship in this way. Dipta and the rest should be worshipped in the middle, and Sarvatomukhi worshipped. "Om rāṁ, salutation to Dipta. Om rīṁ, salutation to Sukshma. Om rūṁ, salutation to Bhadra. Om raiṁ, salutation to Jaya. Om rauṁ, salutation to Vibhuti. Om raṁ, salutation to Aghora. Om raṁ, salutation to Vaidyuta. Om raḥ, salutation to Vijaya. Om ro, salutation to Sarvatomukhi."

Verse 5 (garuda.1.39.5)

ॐ अर्कासनाय नमः । ॐ ह्रां सूर्य्यमूर्तये नमः । एतास्तु पूजयेन्मध्ये ह्रन्मंत्राञ्छृणु शङ्कर । ॐ हं सं खं खखोल्काय क्रां क्रीं सः स्वाहा सूर्य्यमूर्त्तये नमः । अनेनावाहनं कुर्य्यात्स्थापनं सन्निधापनम् । सन्निरोपनमन्त्रेण सकलीकरणं तथा

oṁ arkāsanāya namaḥ oṁ hrāṁ sūryyamūrtaye namaḥ etāstu pūjayenmadhye hranmaṁtrāñchṛṇu śaṅkara oṁ haṁ saṁ khaṁ khakholkāya krāṁ krīṁ saḥ svāhā sūryyamūrttaye namaḥ anenāvāhanaṁ kuryyātsthāpanaṁ sannidhāpanam sanniropanamantreṇa sakalīkaraṇaṁ tathā

"Om, salutation to the sun-seat. Om hrāṁ, salutation to the form of the Sun." One should worship these in the middle; O Shankara, hear the heart-mantra — "Om haṁ saṁ khaṁ, to Khakholka, krāṁ krīṁ saḥ svaha, salutation to the form of the Sun." With this, one should perform the invocation, establishment, drawing-near, and, with the enclosure-mantra, also the embodiment.

Verse 6 (garuda.1.39.6)

मुद्राया दर्शनं रुद्र मूलमन्त्रेण वा हर । तेजोरूपं रक्तवर्णं सितपद्मोपरि स्थितम् । एकचक्ररथारूढं द्विबाहुं धृतपङ्कजम्

mudrāyā darśanaṁ rudra mūlamantreṇa vā hara tejorūpaṁ raktavarṇaṁ sitapadmopari sthitam ekacakrarathārūḍhaṁ dvibāhuṁ dhṛtapaṅkajam

O Rudra, O Hara, one should display the mudra with the root-mantra. One should meditate upon him — of the form of radiance, red in hue, standing upon a white lotus, mounted on a one-wheeled chariot, two-armed, bearing a lotus.

Verse 7 (garuda.1.39.7)

एवं ध्यायेत्सदा सूर्य्यं मूलमन्त्रं श्रृणुष्व च । ॐ ह्रां ह्रीं सः सूर्य्याय नमः

evaṁ dhyāyetsadā sūryyaṁ mūlamantraṁ śrṛṇuṣva ca oṁ hrāṁ hrīṁ saḥ sūryyāya namaḥ

Thus one should always meditate upon the Sun. Hear the root-mantra — "Om hrāṁ hrīṁ saḥ, salutation to the Sun."

Verse 8 (garuda.1.39.8)

वारत्रयं पद्ममुद्रां बिम्बमुद्रां च दर्शयेत् । ॐ आं हृदयाय नमः । ॐ अर्काय शिरसे स्वाहा । ॐ अः भूर्भुवः स्वः ज्वालिनि शिखायै वषट् । ॐ हुं कवचाय हुं । ॐ भां नेत्राभ्यां वौषट् । ॐ वः अस्त्राय फडिति

vāratrayaṁ padmamudrāṁ bimbamudrāṁ ca darśayet oṁ āṁ hṛdayāya namaḥ oṁ arkāya śirase svāhā oṁ aḥ bhūrbhuvaḥ svaḥ jvālini śikhāyai vaṣaṭ oṁ huṁ kavacāya huṁ oṁ bhāṁ netrābhyāṁ vauṣaṭ oṁ vaḥ astrāya phaḍiti

Three times one should display the lotus-mudra and the disc-mudra. "Om āṁ, to the heart, salutation. Om, to Arka, to the head, svaha. Om aḥ, bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ, to Jvalini, to the crest, vashat. Om hum, to the armor, hum. Om bhāṁ, to both eyes, vaushat. Om vaḥ, to the weapon, phat" — thus.

Verse 9 (garuda.1.39.9)

आग्नेय्यामथवैशान्यां नैर्ऋत्यामर्चयेद्धर । ह्रृद्यादि हि वायव्यां नेत्रं चान्तः प्रपूजयेत्

āgneyyāmathavaiśānyāṁ nairṛtyāmarcayeddhara hrṛdyādi hi vāyavyāṁ netraṁ cāntaḥ prapūjayet

O Hara, one should worship in the south-east, or the north-east, and the south-west. The heart and the rest, in the north-west, and the eyes should be duly worshipped within.

Verse 10 (garuda.1.39.10)

दिस्वस्त्रं पूजयेद्रुद्र सोमं तु श्वेतवर्णकम् । दले पूर्वेऽर्चयेद्रुद्र बुधं चामीकरप्रभम्

disvastraṁ pūjayedrudra somaṁ tu śvetavarṇakam dale pūrve'rcayedrudra budhaṁ cāmīkaraprabham

O Rudra, one should worship the weapon in the quarters. The white-hued Moon, O Rudra, in the eastern petal, and Mercury, radiant as gold, should be worshipped.

Verse 11 (garuda.1.39.11)

दक्षिणे पूजयेद्रुद्र पतिवर्णं गुरुं यजेत् । पश्चिमे चैव भूतेशं उत्तरे भार्गवं सितम्

dakṣiṇe pūjayedrudra pativarṇaṁ guruṁ yajet paścime caiva bhūteśaṁ uttare bhārgavaṁ sitam

O Rudra, in the south one should worship Jupiter, of golden hue. In the west, the lord of beings; in the north, the white Venus.

Verse 12 (garuda.1.39.12)

रक्तमङ्गारकं चैव आग्नेये पूजयेद्धर । शनैश्चरं कृष्णवर्णं नैर्ऋत्यां दिशि पूजयेत्

raktamaṅgārakaṁ caiva āgneye pūjayeddhara śanaiścaraṁ kṛṣṇavarṇaṁ nairṛtyāṁ diśi pūjayet

O Hara, in the south-east one should worship red Mars. In the south-west, one should worship black Saturn.

Verse 13 (garuda.1.39.13)

राहुं वायव्यदेशे तु नन्द्यावर्त्तनिभिं हर । ऐशान्यां धूम्रवर्णं तु केतुं सं परिपूजयेत्

rāhuṁ vāyavyadeśe tu nandyāvarttanibhiṁ hara aiśānyāṁ dhūmravarṇaṁ tu ketuṁ saṁ paripūjayet

O Hara, in the north-west, one should worship Rahu, of the hue of the Nandyavarta flower. In the north-east, one should duly worship the smoke-colored Ketu.

Verse 14 (garuda.1.39.14)

एभिर्मन्त्रैर्महादेव तच्छृणुष्व च शङ्कर

ebhirmantrairmahādeva tacchṛṇuṣva ca śaṅkara

O great God, O Shankara, hear these very mantras —

Verse 15 (garuda.1.39.15)

ॐ सों सोमाय नमः । ॐ बुं बुधाय नमः । ॐ बृं बृहस्पतये नमः । ॐ भं भार्गवाय नमः । ॐ अं अंगारकाय नमः । ॐ शं शनैश्चराय नमः । ॐ रं राहवे नमः । ॐ कं केतवे नम इति

oṁ soṁ somāya namaḥ oṁ buṁ budhāya namaḥ oṁ bṛṁ bṛhaspataye namaḥ oṁ bhaṁ bhārgavāya namaḥ oṁ aṁ aṁgārakāya namaḥ oṁ śaṁ śanaiścarāya namaḥ oṁ raṁ rāhave namaḥ oṁ kaṁ ketave nama iti

"Om soṁ, salutation to Soma. Om buṁ, salutation to Budha. Om brṁ, salutation to Brihaspati. Om bhaṁ, salutation to Bhargava. Om aṁ, salutation to Angaraka. Om śaṁ, salutation to Shanaishchara. Om raṁ, salutation to Rahu. Om kaṁ, salutation to Ketu" — thus.

Verse 16 (garuda.1.39.16)

पाद्यादीन्मूलमन्त्रेण दत्त्वा सूर्य्याय शङ्कर । नैवेद्यान्ते धेनुमुद्रां दर्शयेत्साधकोत्तमः

pādyādīnmūlamantreṇa dattvā sūryyāya śaṅkara naivedyānte dhenumudrāṁ darśayetsādhakottamaḥ

O Shankara, having offered padya and the rest to the Sun with the root-mantra, at the end of the food-offering, the excellent practitioner should display the cow-mudra.

Verse 17 (garuda.1.39.17)

जप्त्वा चाष्टसहस्त्रं तु तच्च तस्मै समर्पयेत् । ऐशान्यां दिशि भूतेश तेजश्चण्डं तु पूजयेत्

japtvā cāṣṭasahastraṁ tu tacca tasmai samarpayet aiśānyāṁ diśi bhūteśa tejaścaṇḍaṁ tu pūjayet

Having recited it eight thousand times, one should offer it to him. O lord of beings, in the north-east, one should worship Tejashchanda.

Verse 18 (garuda.1.39.18)

ॐ तेजश्चण्डाय हुं फट् स्वधा स्वाहा पौषट् । निर्माल्यं चार्पयेत्तस्मै ह्यर्घ्यं दद्यात्ततो हर

oṁ tejaścaṇḍāya huṁ phaṭ svadhā svāhā pauṣaṭ nirmālyaṁ cārpayettasmai hyarghyaṁ dadyāttato hara

"Om, to Tejashchanda, hum phat svadha svaha vaushat." One should offer him the discarded flowers; O Hara, thereafter one should give arghya.

Verse 19 (garuda.1.39.19)

तिलतण्डुलसंयुक्तं रक्तचन्दनचर्चितम् । गन्धोदकेन संमिश्रं पुष्पधूपसमन्वितम्

tilataṇḍulasaṁyuktaṁ raktacandanacarcitam gandhodakena saṁmiśraṁ puṣpadhūpasamanvitam

One should prepare the arghya vessel joined with sesame and rice, smeared with red sandalwood, mixed with scented water, and joined with flowers and incense.

Verse 20 (garuda.1.39.20)

कृत्वा शिरसि तत्पात्रं जानुभ्यामवनिं गतः । दर्घ्यं तु सूर्य्याय ह्रृन्मन्त्रेण वृषध्वज

kṛtvā śirasi tatpātraṁ jānubhyāmavaniṁ gataḥ darghyaṁ tu sūryyāya hrṛnmantreṇa vṛṣadhvaja

Placing that vessel upon the head, kneeling upon the ground with both knees, O bearer of the bull-banner, one should offer arghya to the Sun with the heart-mantra.

Verse 21 (garuda.1.39.21)

गणं गुरून्प्रपूज्याथ सर्वान्देवानन्प्रपूजयेत् । ॐ गं गणपतये नमः । ॐ अं गुरुभ्यो नमः

gaṇaṁ gurūnprapūjyātha sarvāndevānanprapūjayet oṁ gaṁ gaṇapataye namaḥ oṁ aṁ gurubhyo namaḥ

Having duly worshipped Ganapati and the teachers, one should then worship all the gods. "Om gaṁ, salutation to Ganapati." "Om aṁ, salutation to the teachers."

Verse 22 (garuda.1.39.22)

सूर्य्यस्य कथिता पूजा कृत्वैतां विष्णुलोकभाक्

sūryyasya kathitā pūjā kṛtvaitāṁ viṣṇulokabhāk

Thus has the worship of the Sun been declared; whoever performs it becomes a sharer of the world of Vishnu.
