Astrology: The Auspicious and Inauspicious Positions of the Planets
Verse 1 (garuda.1.61.1)
॥हरिरुवाच ॥ सप्तमोपचयाद्यस्थश्चन्द्रः सर्वत्र शोभनः ॥ शुक्लपक्षे द्वितीयस्तु पंचमो नवमस्तथा
.hariruvāca . saptamopacayādyasthaścandraḥ sarvatra śobhanaḥ . śuklapakṣe dvitīyastu paṁcamo navamastathā
Hari said: The Moon, situated in the upachaya houses reckoned from the seventh, is auspicious everywhere. Likewise on the second, fifth, and ninth days of the bright fortnight,
Verse 2 (garuda.1.61.2)
संपूज्यमानो लोकैस्तु गुरुवदॄश्यते शशी ॥ चन्द्रस्य द्वादशावस्था भवन्ति श्रृणु ता अपि
saṁpūjyamāno lokaistu guruvadṝśyate śaśī . candrasya dvādaśāvasthā bhavanti śrṛṇu tā api
when duly honored by the people, the Moon appears as auspicious as Guru (Jupiter). The Moon has twelve states; hear these too.
Verse 3 (garuda.1.61.3)
त्रिषु त्रिषु च ऋक्षेषु अश्विन्यादि वदाम्यहम् ॥ प्रवासस्थं पुनर्दृष्टं मृतावस्थं जयावहम्
triṣu triṣu ca ṛkṣeṣu aśvinyādi vadāmyaham . pravāsasthaṁ punardṛṣṭaṁ mṛtāvasthaṁ jayāvaham
In each group of three nakshatras, beginning with Ashvini, I shall tell them: the state of travel, the state of being seen again, the 'dead' state which brings victory,
Verse 4 (garuda.1.61.4)
हास्यावस्थं नता(क्रीडा) वस्थं प्रमोदावस्थमेव च ॥ विषादावस्थभोगस्थे ज्वरावस्थं व्यवस्थितम्
hāsyāvasthaṁ natā(krīḍā) vasthaṁ pramodāvasthameva ca . viṣādāvasthabhogasthe jvarāvasthaṁ vyavasthitam
the state of laughter, the state of dance, and the state of delight as well; the state of despondency, the state of enjoyment, the state of fever — in this order,
Verse 5 (garuda.1.61.5)
कम्पा(न्या) वस्थं सुखावस्थं द्वादशावस्थगं भवेत् ॥ प्रवासो हानिर्मृत्यु च जयो हासेरतिः सुखम्
kampā(nyā) vasthaṁ sukhāvasthaṁ dvādaśāvasthagaṁ bhavet . pravāso hānirmṛtyu ca jayo hāseratiḥ sukham
the state of trembling, and the state of happiness — these are the twelve states. Travel, loss, and death; victory, pleasure from laughter, happiness;
Verse 6 (garuda.1.61.6)
शोको भोगो ज्वरः कम्पः सुखं चेति क्रमात्फलम् ॥ जन्मस्थः कुरुते तुष्टिं द्वितीये नास्ति निर्वृतिः
śoko bhogo jvaraḥ kampaḥ sukhaṁ ceti kramātphalam . janmasthaḥ kurute tuṣṭiṁ dvitīye nāsti nirvṛtiḥ
grief, enjoyment, fever, trembling, and happiness — such, in order, is the result of each. Situated in the birth-sign, it brings contentment; in the second, there is no ease.
Verse 7 (garuda.1.61.7)
तृतीये राजसन्मानं चतुर्थे कलहागमः ॥ पञ्चमेन मृगाङ्केन स्त्रीलाभो वै तथा भवेत्
tṛtīye rājasanmānaṁ caturthe kalahāgamaḥ . pañcamena mṛgāṅkena strīlābho vai tathā bhavet
In the third, honor from a king; in the fourth, the onset of quarrel. In the fifth, the deer-marked Moon likewise brings the gain of a woman.
Verse 8 (garuda.1.61.8)
धनधान्यागमः षष्ठे रतिः पूजा च सप्तमे ॥ अष्टमे प्राणसन्देहो नवमे कोशसञ्चयः
dhanadhānyāgamaḥ ṣaṣṭhe ratiḥ pūjā ca saptame . aṣṭame prāṇasandeho navame kośasañcayaḥ
In the sixth, the arrival of wealth and grain; in the seventh, pleasure and honor are obtained.
Verse 9 (garuda.1.61.9)
दशमे कार्य्यनिष्पत्तिध्रुवमेकादशे जयः ॥ द्वादशेन शशाङ्केन मृत्युरेव न संशयः
daśame kāryyaniṣpattidhruvamekādaśe jayaḥ . dvādaśena śaśāṅkena mṛtyureva na saṁśayaḥ
In the eighth, danger to life; in the ninth, accumulation of treasure. In the tenth, the accomplishment of undertakings; in the eleventh, certain victory.
Verse 10 (garuda.1.61.10)
कृत्तिकादौ च पूर्वेण सप्तर्क्षाणि च वै व्रजेत् ॥ मघादौ दक्षिणे गच्छेदनुराधादि पश्चिमे
kṛttikādau ca pūrveṇa saptarkṣāṇi ca vai vrajet . maghādau dakṣiṇe gacchedanurādhādi paścime
With the Moon in the twelfth, death itself follows, without doubt. Under Krittika and the seven nakshatras beginning with it, one should travel eastward.
Verse 11 (garuda.1.61.11)
प्रशस्ता चोत्तर यात्रा धनिष्ठादिषु सप्तसु ॥ अश्विनी रेवती चित्रा धनिष्ठा समलङ्कृतौ
praśastā cottara yātrā dhaniṣṭhādiṣu saptasu . aśvinī revatī citrā dhaniṣṭhā samalaṅkṛtau
Under Magha and the group beginning with it, one should go south; under Anuradha and its group, west. Under Dhanishtha and the seven beginning with it, northward travel is praised.
Verse 12 (garuda.1.61.12)
मृगाश्विचित्रापुष्याश्च मूला हस्ता शुभाः सदा ॥ कन्याप्रदाने यात्रायां प्रतिष्ठादिषु कर्मसु
mṛgāśvicitrāpuṣyāśca mūlā hastā śubhāḥ sadā . kanyāpradāne yātrāyāṁ pratiṣṭhādiṣu karmasu
Ashvini, Revati, Chitra, and Dhanishtha are equally auspicious. Mrigashira, Ashvini, Chitra, Pushya, Mula, and Hasta are ever auspicious.
Verse 13 (garuda.1.61.13)
शुक्रचन्द्रौ हि जन्मस्थौ शुभदौ च द्वितीयके ॥ शशिज्ञशुक्रजीवाश्च राशौ चाथ तृतीयके
śukracandrau hi janmasthau śubhadau ca dvitīyake . śaśijñaśukrajīvāśca rāśau cātha tṛtīyake
For the giving of a maiden in marriage, for travel, and for consecration and similar undertakings — Venus and the Moon are auspicious in the first house; in the second, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter; and in the third,

भौममन्दशशाङ्कार्का बुधः श्रेष्ठस्चतुर्थके ॥ शुक्रजीवौ पञ्चमे च चन्द्रकेतुसमाहितौ
bhaumamandaśaśāṅkārkā budhaḥ śreṣṭhascaturthake . śukrajīvau pañcame ca candraketusamāhitau
Mars, Saturn, the Moon, and the Sun; Mercury is best in the fourth. In the fifth, Venus and Jupiter; and the Moon and Ketu together,
Verse 15 (garuda.1.61.15)
मन्दार्कौ च कुजः षष्ठे गुरुचन्द्रौ च सप्तमे ॥ ज्ञशुक्रावष्टमे श्रेष्ठौ नवमस्थो गुरुः शुभः
mandārkau ca kujaḥ ṣaṣṭhe gurucandrau ca saptame . jñaśukrāvaṣṭame śreṣṭhau navamastho guruḥ śubhaḥ
in the sixth, Saturn, the Sun, and Mars are auspicious; in the seventh, Jupiter and the Moon. In the eighth, Mercury and Venus are best; Jupiter situated in the ninth is auspicious.
Verse 16 (garuda.1.61.16)
अर्कार्किचन्द्रा दशमे ग्रहा एकादशेखिलाः ॥ बुधोऽथ द्वादशे चैव भार्गवः सुखदो भवेत्
arkārkicandrā daśame grahā ekādaśekhilāḥ . budho'tha dvādaśe caiva bhārgavaḥ sukhado bhavet
The Sun, Saturn, and the Moon are auspicious in the tenth; in the eleventh, all the planets are auspicious. Mercury in the twelfth, and Venus too, become bestowers of happiness.
Verse 17 (garuda.1.61.17)
सिंहेन मकरः श्रेष्ठः कन्यया मेष उत्तमः ॥ तुलया सह मीनस्तु कुम्भेन सहकर्कटः
siṁhena makaraḥ śreṣṭhaḥ kanyayā meṣa uttamaḥ . tulayā saha mīnastu kumbhena sahakarkaṭaḥ
Capricorn is excellent together with Leo; Aries is excellent together with Virgo; Pisces is auspicious together with Libra; Cancer together with Aquarius.
Verse 18 (garuda.1.61.18)
धनुषा वृषभः श्रेष्ठो मिथुनेन च वृश्चिकः ॥ एतत्षडष्टकं ? प्रीत्यै भवत्येव न संशयः
dhanuṣā vṛṣabhaḥ śreṣṭho mithunena ca vṛścikaḥ . etatṣaḍaṣṭakaṁ ? prītyai bhavatyeva na saṁśayaḥ
Taurus is excellent together with Sagittarius, and Scorpio together with Gemini. This six-eight relationship of signs conduces to mutual goodwill — there is no doubt of it.
