Verse 1 (garuda.1.60.1)

॥हरिरुवाच ॥ षडादित्ये दशा ज्ञेया सोमे पञ्चदश स्मृताः ॥ अष्टावङ्गारके चैव बुधै सप्तदश स्मृताः

.hariruvāca . ṣaḍāditye daśā jñeyā some pañcadaśa smṛtāḥ . aṣṭāvaṅgārake caiva budhai saptadaśa smṛtāḥ

Hari said: The Sun's period (dasha) is to be known as six years; the Moon's is remembered as fifteen; Mars's as eight; and Mercury's is remembered as seventeen.

Verse 2 (garuda.1.60.2)

शनैश्चरे दश ज्ञेया गुरोरेकोनविंशतिः ॥ राहोर्द्वादशवर्षाणि एकविंशतिर्भार्गवे

śanaiścare daśa jñeyā gurorekonaviṁśatiḥ . rāhordvādaśavarṣāṇi ekaviṁśatirbhārgave

Saturn's is to be known as ten years; Jupiter's as nineteen; Rahu's as twelve years; and Venus's as twenty-one.

Verse 3 (garuda.1.60.3)

रवेर्दशा दुः खदा स्यादुद्वेगनृपनाशकृत् ॥ विभूतिदा सोमदशा सुखमिष्टान्नदा तथा

raverdaśā duḥ khadā syādudveganṛpanāśakṛt . vibhūtidā somadaśā sukhamiṣṭānnadā tathā

The Sun's period brings sorrow, causes agitation, and destroys kings. The Moon's period bestows prosperity, and grants happiness and desired food.

Verse 4 (garuda.1.60.4)

दुः खप्रदा कुजदशा राज्यादेः स्याद्विनाशिनी ॥ दिव्यस्त्रीदा बुधदशा राज्यदा कोशवृद्धिदा

duḥ khapradā kujadaśā rājyādeḥ syādvināśinī . divyastrīdā budhadaśā rājyadā kośavṛddhidā

Mars's period brings sorrow, and destroys sovereignty and the like. Mercury's period grants celestial women, bestows sovereignty, and increases the treasury.

Verse 5 (garuda.1.60.5)

शनेर्दशा राज्यनाशबन्धुदुः खकरी भवेत् ॥ गुरोर्दशा राज्यदा स्यात्सुखधर्मादिदायिनी

śanerdaśā rājyanāśabandhuduḥ khakarī bhavet . gurordaśā rājyadā syātsukhadharmādidāyinī

Saturn's period causes the destruction of sovereignty and sorrow for one's kinsfolk. Jupiter's period bestows sovereignty, and grants happiness, dharma, and the rest.

Verse 6 (garuda.1.60.6)

राहोर्दशा राज्यनाशव्याधिदा दुः खदा भवेत् ॥ हस्त्यश्वदा शुक्रदशा राज्यस्त्रीलाभदा भवेत्

rāhordaśā rājyanāśavyādhidā duḥ khadā bhavet . hastyaśvadā śukradaśā rājyastrīlābhadā bhavet

Rahu's period brings destruction of sovereignty, disease, and sorrow. Venus's period grants elephants and horses, and bestows sovereignty and the gain of women.

Verse 7 (garuda.1.60.7)

मेष अङ्गारकक्षेत्रं वृषः शुक्रस्य कीर्त्तितः ॥ मिथुनस्य बुधो ज्ञेयः सोमः कर्कटकस्य च

meṣa aṅgārakakṣetraṁ vṛṣaḥ śukrasya kīrttitaḥ . mithunasya budho jñeyaḥ somaḥ karkaṭakasya ca

Aries is the field of Mars, Taurus is declared to be Venus's; Gemini is to be known as Mercury's, and Cancer as the Moon's.

Verse 8 (garuda.1.60.8)

सूर्य्यक्षेत्रं भवेत्सिंहः कन्या क्षेत्रं बुधस्य च ॥ भार्गवस्य तुला क्षेत्रं वृश्चिकोंगारकस्य च

sūryyakṣetraṁ bhavetsiṁhaḥ kanyā kṣetraṁ budhasya ca . bhārgavasya tulā kṣetraṁ vṛścikoṁgārakasya ca

Leo is the Sun's field, Virgo is Mercury's field; Libra is Venus's field, and Scorpio is Mars's.

Verse 9 (garuda.1.60.9)

धनुः सुर गुरोश्चैव शनेर्मकरकुम्भकौ ॥ मीनः सुरगुरोश्चैव ग्रहक्षेत्रं प्रकीर्त्तितम्

dhanuḥ sura guroścaiva śanermakarakumbhakau . mīnaḥ suraguroścaiva grahakṣetraṁ prakīrttitam

Sagittarius belongs to the gods' teacher (Jupiter), Capricorn and Aquarius belong to Saturn; Pisces too belongs to the gods' teacher — thus the fields of the planets are declared.

Verse 10 (garuda.1.60.10)

पौर्णमास्याद्वयं तत्र पूर्वाषाढाद्वयं भवेत् ॥ द्विराषाढः स विज्ञेयो विष्णुः स्वपिति कर्कटे

paurṇamāsyādvayaṁ tatra pūrvāṣāḍhādvayaṁ bhavet . dvirāṣāḍhaḥ sa vijñeyo viṣṇuḥ svapiti karkaṭe

There, a pair of full-moon months occurs, and a pair of Purva-Ashadha [months] as well; that should be known as the double Ashadha (the intercalary month). Vishnu sleeps in the sign of Cancer.

Verse 11 (garuda.1.60.11)

अश्विनी रेवती चित्रा धनिष्ठा स्यादलङ्कृतौ ॥ मृगाहिकपिमार्जारश्वानः सूकरपक्षिणः

aśvinī revatī citrā dhaniṣṭhā syādalaṅkṛtau . mṛgāhikapimārjāraśvānaḥ sūkarapakṣiṇaḥ

Ashvini, Revati, Chitra, and Dhanishtha are held to be auspicious. Deer, snake, monkey, cat, dog, boar, and birds,

Verse 12 (garuda.1.60.12)

नकुलो मूषकश्चैव यात्रायां दक्षिणे शुभः ॥ विप्रकन्या शिवा एषां शङ्खभेरीवसुन्धराः

nakulo mūṣakaścaiva yātrāyāṁ dakṣiṇe śubhaḥ . viprakanyā śivā eṣāṁ śaṅkhabherīvasundharāḥ

the mongoose, and the mouse — on a journey, when seen to the right, are auspicious. A brahmin, a maiden, the goddess Shiva, a conch, a kettle-drum, and earthenware,

Verse 13 (garuda.1.60.13)

वेणुस्त्रीपूर्णकुम्भाश्च यात्रायां दर्शनं शुभम् ॥ जम्बूकोष्ट्रखराद्याश्च यात्रायां वामके शुभाः

veṇustrīpūrṇakumbhāśca yātrāyāṁ darśanaṁ śubham . jambūkoṣṭrakharādyāśca yātrāyāṁ vāmake śubhāḥ

a flute, a woman, and a full water-vessel — sighting these on a journey is auspicious. Jackal, camel, donkey, and the like are auspicious on a journey when seen to the left,

Verse 14 (garuda.1.60.14)

कार्पासौषधितैलं च पक्वाङ्गारभुजङ्गमाः ॥ मुक्तकेशी रक्तमाल्यनग्नाद्यशुभमीक्षितम्

kārpāsauṣadhitailaṁ ca pakvāṅgārabhujaṅgamāḥ . muktakeśī raktamālyanagnādyaśubhamīkṣitam

cotton, medicinal herbs, and oil, glowing embers, and serpents,

Verse 15 (garuda.1.60.15)

हिक्काय लक्षणं वक्ष्ये लभत्पूर्वे महाफलम् ॥ आग्नेये शोकसन्तापौ दक्षिणे हानिमाप्नुयात्

hikkāya lakṣaṇaṁ vakṣye labhatpūrve mahāphalam . āgneye śokasantāpau dakṣiṇe hānimāpnuyāt

a woman with loose hair, red garlands, a naked person, and the like — sighting these is inauspicious. I shall now describe the meaning of hiccups: one that occurs while facing east yields great fruit.

Verse 16 (garuda.1.60.16)

नैर्ऋत्य शोकसन्तापौ मिष्टान्नं चैव पश्चिमे ॥ अर्थं प्राप्नोति वायव्ये उत्तरे कलहोभवेत्

nairṛtya śokasantāpau miṣṭānnaṁ caiva paścime . arthaṁ prāpnoti vāyavye uttare kalahobhavet

In the southeast, it brings grief and torment; in the south, one incurs loss.

Verse 17 (garuda.1.60.17)

ईशाने मरणं प्रोक्तं हिक्कायाश्चफलाफलम् ॥ विलिख्य रविचक्रं तु भास्करो नरसन्निभः

īśāne maraṇaṁ proktaṁ hikkāyāścaphalāphalam . vilikhya ravicakraṁ tu bhāskaro narasannibhaḥ

In the southwest, grief and torment; and in the west, sweet food. In the northwest, one gains wealth; in the north, quarrel arises.

Verse 18 (garuda.1.60.18)

यस्मिन्नृक्षे वसद्भानुस्तदांदि त्रीणि मस्तके ॥ त्रयं वक्त्रे प्रदातव्यमेकैकं स्कन्धयोर्न्यसेत्

yasminnṛkṣe vasadbhānustadāṁdi trīṇi mastake . trayaṁ vaktre pradātavyamekaikaṁ skandhayornyaset

In the northeast, death is declared — such is the auspicious and inauspicious meaning of a hiccup. Having drawn the sun's wheel, in the form of the sun resembling a man —

Verse 19 (garuda.1.60.19)

एकैकं बाहुयुग्मे तु एकैकं हस्तयोर्द्वयोः ॥ हृदये पञ्च ऋक्षाणि एकं नाभौ प्रदापयेत्

ekaikaṁ bāhuyugme tu ekaikaṁ hastayordvayoḥ . hṛdaye pañca ṛkṣāṇi ekaṁ nābhau pradāpayet

in whichever nakshatra the sun dwells, beginning from that point, three nakshatras should be placed at the head, three at the face, and one each on the two shoulders.

Verse 20 (garuda.1.60.20)

ऋक्षमेकं न्यसेद्गुह्ये एकैकं जानुके न्यसेत् ॥ नक्षत्राणि च शेषाणि रविपादे नियोजयेत्

ṛkṣamekaṁ nyasedguhye ekaikaṁ jānuke nyaset . nakṣatrāṇi ca śeṣāṇi ravipāde niyojayet

One each on the two upper arms, one each on the two hands; five nakshatras at the heart, and one should be placed at the navel.

Verse 21 (garuda.1.60.21)

चरणस्थेन ऋक्षेण अल्पायुर्जायते नरः ॥ विदशेगमनं जानौ गुह्यस्थे परदारवान्

caraṇasthena ṛkṣeṇa alpāyurjāyate naraḥ . vidaśegamanaṁ jānau guhyasthe paradāravān

One nakshatra should be placed at the genital region; one each should be placed at the two knees; the remaining nakshatras should be assigned to the feet of the sun-figure.

Verse 22 (garuda.1.60.22)

नाभिस्थेनाल्पसन्तुष्टो हृत्स्थेन स्यान्महेश्वरः ॥ पाणिस्थेन भवेच्चौरः स्थानभ्रष्टो भवेद्धजे

nābhisthenālpasantuṣṭo hṛtsthena syānmaheśvaraḥ . pāṇisthena bhaveccauraḥ sthānabhraṣṭo bhaveddhaje

With the nakshatra situated at the feet, a person becomes short-lived; at the knee, there is travel to foreign lands; at the genitals, one becomes given to adultery.

Verse 23 (garuda.1.60.23)

स्कन्धस्थिते धनपतिर्मुखे मिष्टान्नमाप्नुयात् ॥ मस्तके पदृवस्त्रं स्यान्नक्षत्रं यदि स्थितम्

skandhasthite dhanapatirmukhe miṣṭānnamāpnuyāt . mastake padṛvastraṁ syānnakṣatraṁ yadi sthitam

With it at the navel, one becomes content with little; with it at the heart, one becomes greatly prosperous. With it at the hand, one becomes a thief; with it at the arm, one is displaced from his position. With it at the shoulder, one becomes a lord of wealth; at the face, one obtains sweet food. If the nakshatra is stationed at the head, the result concerns garments.
