Verse 1 (garuda.1.59.1)

(अथ ज्योतिः शास्त्रम्) ॥ सूत उवाच ॥ ज्योतिश्चक्रं भुवो मानमुक्त्वा प्रोवाच केशवः ॥ चतुर्लक्षं ज्योतिषस्य सारं रुद्राय सर्वदः

(atha jyotiḥ śāstram) . sūta uvāca . jyotiścakraṁ bhuvo mānamuktvā provāca keśavaḥ . caturlakṣaṁ jyotiṣasya sāraṁ rudrāya sarvadaḥ

(Now the science of astrology) Suta said: Having declared the wheel of the stars and the measure of the earth, Keshava spoke further. The essence of astrology, four hundred thousand verses in extent, the benefactor of all, was spoken to Rudra —

Verse 2 (garuda.1.59.2)

॥हरिरुवाच ॥ कृत्तिकास्त्वग्निदेवत्या रोहिण्यो ब्रह्मणः स्मृताः ॥ इल्वलाः सोमदेवत्या रौद्रं चार्द्रमुदाहृतम्

.hariruvāca . kṛttikāstvagnidevatyā rohiṇyo brahmaṇaḥ smṛtāḥ . ilvalāḥ somadevatyā raudraṁ cārdramudāhṛtam

Hari said: Krittika has Agni as its deity; Rohini is remembered as belonging to Brahma; Ilvala (Mrigashira) has the Moon as its deity, and Ardra is declared to belong to Rudra.

Verse 3 (garuda.1.59.3)

पुनर्वसुस्तथादित्यस्तिष्यश्च गुरुदैवतः ॥ अश्लेषाः सर्पदेवत्या मघाश्च पितृदेवताः

punarvasustathādityastiṣyaśca gurudaivataḥ . aśleṣāḥ sarpadevatyā maghāśca pitṛdevatāḥ

Punarvasu belongs to Aditi, and Tishya (Pushya) has Guru (Jupiter) as its deity; Ashlesha has the Serpents as its deity, and Magha has the Ancestors as its deity.

Verse 4 (garuda.1.59.4)

भाग्याश्च पूर्वफल्गुन्य अर्य्यमा च तथोत्तरः ॥ सावित्रश्च तथा हस्ता चित्रा त्वष्टा प्रकीर्त्तितः

bhāgyāśca pūrvaphalgunya aryyamā ca tathottaraḥ . sāvitraśca tathā hastā citrā tvaṣṭā prakīrttitaḥ

Purva-Phalguni belongs to Bhaga, and Uttara-Phalguni to Aryaman; Hasta belongs to Savitri, and Chitra is declared to belong to Tvashta.

Verse 5 (garuda.1.59.5)

स्वाती च वायुदेवत्या नक्षत्रं परिकीर्त्तितम् ॥ इन्द्राग्निदेवता प्रोक्ता विशाखा वृषभध्वज

svātī ca vāyudevatyā nakṣatraṁ parikīrttitam . indrāgnidevatā proktā viśākhā vṛṣabhadhvaja

Svati is declared to be the nakshatra of the Wind. O bull-bannered one, Vishakha is declared to have Indra and Agni as its deities.

Verse 6 (garuda.1.59.6)

मैत्रमृक्षमनूराधा ज्येष्ठा शाक्रं प्रकीर्त्तितम् ॥ तथा निर्ऋतिदेवत्यो मूलस्तज्ज्ञैरुदाहृतः

maitramṛkṣamanūrādhā jyeṣṭhā śākraṁ prakīrttitam . tathā nirṛtidevatyo mūlastajjñairudāhṛtaḥ

Anuradha is the star of Mitra; Jyeshtha is declared to belong to Shakra (Indra); likewise Mula is declared by its knowers to belong to Nirriti.

Verse 7 (garuda.1.59.7)

आप्यास्त्वाषाढपूर्वास्तु उत्तरा वैश्वदेवताः ॥ ब्राह्मश्चैवाभिजित्प्रोक्तः श्रवणा वैष्णवः स्मृतः

āpyāstvāṣāḍhapūrvāstu uttarā vaiśvadevatāḥ . brāhmaścaivābhijitproktaḥ śravaṇā vaiṣṇavaḥ smṛtaḥ

Purva-Ashadha belongs to the Waters, Uttara-Ashadha to the Vishvedevas. Abhijit is declared to belong to Brahma; Shravana is remembered as belonging to Vishnu.

Verse 8 (garuda.1.59.8)

वासवस्तु तथा ऋक्षं धनिष्ठा प्रोच्यते बुधैः ॥ तथा शतभिषा प्रोक्तं नक्षत्रं वारुणं शिव

vāsavastu tathā ṛkṣaṁ dhaniṣṭhā procyate budhaiḥ . tathā śatabhiṣā proktaṁ nakṣatraṁ vāruṇaṁ śiva

That same nakshatra is also called Vasava (of Indra); Dhanishtha is declared by the wise to belong to the Vasus. Likewise, O Shiva, Shatabhisha is declared to be the nakshatra of Varuna.

Verse 9 (garuda.1.59.9)

आजं भाद्रपदा पूर्वा अहिर्ब्रुध्न्यस्तथोत्तरा ॥ पौष्णं च रेवती ऋक्षमश्वयुक्चाश्वदैवतम्

ājaṁ bhādrapadā pūrvā ahirbrudhnyastathottarā . pauṣṇaṁ ca revatī ṛkṣamaśvayukcāśvadaivatam

Purva-Bhadrapada belongs to Aja (Ekapada), Uttara-Bhadrapada to Ahirbudhnya. Revati is the nakshatra of Pushan; Ashvini has the Ashvins as its deities.

Verse 10 (garuda.1.59.10)

भरण्यृक्षं तथा याम्यं प्रोक्तास्ते ऋक्षदेवताः ॥ ब्रह्माणी संस्थिता पूर्वे प्रितपन्नवमीतिथौ

bharaṇyṛkṣaṁ tathā yāmyaṁ proktāste ṛkṣadevatāḥ . brahmāṇī saṁsthitā pūrve pritapannavamītithau

Bharani is declared to be Yama's nakshatra — these are declared as the deities of the nakshatras. Brahmani is stationed in the east on the first and ninth lunar days,

Verse 11 (garuda.1.59.11)

माहेश्वरी चोत्तरे च द्वितीया दशामीतिथौ ॥ पञ्चम्यां च त्रयोदश्यां वाराही दक्षिणे स्थिता

māheśvarī cottare ca dvitīyā daśāmītithau . pañcamyāṁ ca trayodaśyāṁ vārāhī dakṣiṇe sthitā

and Maheshvari in the north on the second and tenth. On the fifth and thirteenth, Varahi is stationed in the south.

Verse 12 (garuda.1.59.12)

षष्ठ्यां चैव चतुर्दश्यामिन्द्राणी पश्चिमे स्थिता ॥ सप्तम्यां पौर्णमास्यां च चामुण्डा वायुगोचरे

ṣaṣṭhyāṁ caiva caturdaśyāmindrāṇī paścime sthitā . saptamyāṁ paurṇamāsyāṁ ca cāmuṇḍā vāyugocare

On the sixth and fourteenth, Indrani is stationed in the west. On the seventh and full moon, Chamunda dwells in the northwest.

Verse 13 (garuda.1.59.13)

अष्टम्यमावास्ययोगे महालक्ष्मीशगोचरे ॥ एकादश्यां तृतीयायामग्निकोणे तु वैष्णवी

aṣṭamyamāvāsyayoge mahālakṣmīśagocare . ekādaśyāṁ tṛtīyāyāmagnikoṇe tu vaiṣṇavī

On the eighth and at the new-moon conjunction, Mahalakshmi dwells in the northeast. On the eleventh and third, Vaishnavi dwells in the southeast.

Verse 14 (garuda.1.59.14)

द्वादश्यां च चतुर्थ्यां तु कौमारी नैर्ऋते तथा ॥ योगिनीसम्मुखेनैव गमनादि न कारयेत्

dvādaśyāṁ ca caturthyāṁ tu kaumārī nairṛte tathā . yoginīsammukhenaiva gamanādi na kārayet

On the twelfth and fourth, Kaumari dwells in the southwest. One should not undertake travel and the like directly toward the direction occupied by the Yogini.

Verse 15 (garuda.1.59.15)

अश्विनीमैत्ररेवत्यो मृगमूलपुनर्वसु ॥ पुष्या हस्ता तथा ज्येष्ठा प्रस्थाने श्रेष्ठमुच्यते

aśvinīmaitrarevatyo mṛgamūlapunarvasu . puṣyā hastā tathā jyeṣṭhā prasthāne śreṣṭhamucyate

Ashvini, Mrigashira, Revati, Mrigashira, Mula, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, and Jyeshtha — these are said to be excellent for setting out on a journey.

Verse 16 (garuda.1.59.16)

हस्तादिपञ्चऋक्षाणि उत्तरात्रयमेव च ॥ अश्विनी रोहिणी पुष्या धनिष्ठा च पुनर्वसु

hastādipañcaṛkṣāṇi uttarātrayameva ca . aśvinī rohiṇī puṣyā dhaniṣṭhā ca punarvasu

Hasta and the five nakshatras after it, and the three Uttara-nakshatras as well; Ashvini, Rohini, Pushya, Dhanishtha, and Punarvasu —

Verse 17 (garuda.1.59.17)

वस्त्रप्रावरणे श्रेष्ठो नक्षत्राणां गणः स्मृतः ॥ कृत्तिका भरण्यश्लेषा मघा मूलविशाखयोः

vastraprāvaraṇe śreṣṭho nakṣatrāṇāṁ gaṇaḥ smṛtaḥ . kṛttikā bharaṇyaśleṣā maghā mūlaviśākhayoḥ

this group of nakshatras is remembered as excellent for obtaining cloth and coverings. Krittika, Bharani, Ashlesha, Magha, and the pair Mula and Vishakha —

Verse 18 (garuda.1.59.18)

त्रीणि, पूर्वा तथा चैव अधोवक्राः प्रकीर्त्तिताः ? ॥ एषु वापीतडागादिकूपभूमितृणानि च

trīṇi, pūrvā tathā caiva adhovakrāḥ prakīrttitāḥ ? . eṣu vāpītaḍāgādikūpabhūmitṛṇāni ca

these three groups, and likewise the Purva-nakshatras as well, are declared to face downward.

Verse 19 (garuda.1.59.19)

देवागारस्य खननं निधानखननं तथा ॥ गणितं ज्योतिषारम्भं खनिबिलप्रवेशनम्

devāgārasya khananaṁ nidhānakhananaṁ tathā . gaṇitaṁ jyotiṣārambhaṁ khanibilapraveśanam

Under these: the digging of step-wells and tanks, wells, land-leveling and grass-work, the digging of a temple's foundation, and likewise digging for buried treasure,

Verse 20 (garuda.1.59.20)

कुर्य्यादधोगतान्येव अन्यानि च वृषध्वज ॥ रेवती चाश्विनी चित्रा स्वाती हस्ता पुनर्वसु

kuryyādadhogatānyeva anyāni ca vṛṣadhvaja . revatī cāśvinī citrā svātī hastā punarvasu

calculation, the beginning of astrological study, and entry into a mine or cave — O bull-bannered one, all these and similar tasks should be performed only under the downward-facing nakshatras.

Verse 21 (garuda.1.59.21)

अनुराधा मृगो ज्येष्ठा एते पार्श्वमुखाः स्मृताः ॥ गजोष्ट्राश्वबलीवर्ददमनं महिषस्य च

anurādhā mṛgo jyeṣṭhā ete pārśvamukhāḥ smṛtāḥ . gajoṣṭrāśvabalīvardadamanaṁ mahiṣasya ca

Revati, Ashvini, Chitra, Svati, Hasta, Punarvasu, Anuradha, Mrigashira, and Jyeshtha — these are remembered as facing sideways.

Verse 22 (garuda.1.59.22)

बीजानां वपनं कुर्य्याद्गमनागमनादिकम् ॥ चक्रयन्त्ररथानां च नावादीनां प्रवाहणम्

bījānāṁ vapanaṁ kuryyādgamanāgamanādikam . cakrayantrarathānāṁ ca nāvādīnāṁ pravāhaṇam

The taming of elephants, camels, horses, oxen, and buffaloes, the sowing of seeds, coming and going and the like,

Verse 23 (garuda.1.59.23)

पार्श्वेषु यानि कर्माणि कुर्य्यादेतेषु तान्यपि ॥ रोहिण्यार्द्रां तथा पुष्या धनिष्ठा चोत्तरात्रयम्

pārśveṣu yāni karmāṇi kuryyādeteṣu tānyapi . rohiṇyārdrāṁ tathā puṣyā dhaniṣṭhā cottarātrayam

the driving of wheeled machines, chariots, and the propulsion of boats — these and any tasks associated with the sides should also be performed under these.

Verse 24 (garuda.1.59.24)

वारुणं श्रवणं चैव नव चोर्ध्वमुखाः स्मृताः ॥ एषु राज्याभिषेकं च पट्टबन्धं च कारयेत्

vāruṇaṁ śravaṇaṁ caiva nava cordhvamukhāḥ smṛtāḥ . eṣu rājyābhiṣekaṁ ca paṭṭabandhaṁ ca kārayet

Rohini, Ardra, Pushya, Dhanishtha, and the three Uttara-nakshatras, Varuna (Shatabhisha), and Shravana as well — these nine are remembered as facing upward.

Verse 25 (garuda.1.59.25)

ऊर्ध्वमुख्यान्युच्छ्रितानि सर्वाण्येतेषु कारयेत् ॥ चतुर्थी चाशुभा षष्ठी अष्टमी नवमी तथा

ūrdhvamukhyānyucchritāni sarvāṇyeteṣu kārayet . caturthī cāśubhā ṣaṣṭhī aṣṭamī navamī tathā

Under these, coronation to sovereignty and the tying of the diadem should be performed. All tasks involving elevation and upward things should be performed under these.

Verse 26 (garuda.1.59.26)

अमावास्या पूर्णिमा च तद्वादशी च चतुर्दशी ॥ अशुक्ला प्रतिपच्छ्रेष्ठा द्वितीया चन्द्रसूनुना

amāvāsyā pūrṇimā ca tadvādaśī ca caturdaśī . aśuklā pratipacchreṣṭhā dvitīyā candrasūnunā

The fourth and sixth are inauspicious; likewise the eighth and ninth; the new moon and full moon, and the twelfth and fourteenth as well —

Verse 27 (garuda.1.59.27)

तृतीया भूमिपुत्रेण चतुर्थी च शनैश्चरे ॥ गुरौ शुभा पञ्चमी स्यात्षष्ठी मङ्गलशुक्रयोः

tṛtīyā bhūmiputreṇa caturthī ca śanaiścare . gurau śubhā pañcamī syātṣaṣṭhī maṅgalaśukrayoḥ

the dark fortnight's first day is excellent; the second belongs to the Moon's son (Mercury); the third belongs to the earth's son (Mars); the fourth belongs to Shanaishchara (Saturn);

Verse 28 (garuda.1.59.28)

सप्तमी सोमपुत्रेण अष्टमी कुजभास्करौ ॥ नवमी चन्द्रवा(सौ) रेण दशमी तु गुरौ शुभा

saptamī somaputreṇa aṣṭamī kujabhāskarau . navamī candravā(sau) reṇa daśamī tu gurau śubhā

the fifth is auspicious under Guru (Jupiter); the sixth belongs to Mars and Venus; the seventh belongs to the Moon's son; the eighth belongs to Mars and the Sun;

Verse 29 (garuda.1.59.29)

एकादश्या गुरुशुक्रौ द्वादश्यां च पुनर्बुधः ॥ त्रयोदशी शुक्रभौमौ शनौ श्रेष्ठा चतुर्दशी

ekādaśyā guruśukrau dvādaśyāṁ ca punarbudhaḥ . trayodaśī śukrabhaumau śanau śreṣṭhā caturdaśī

the ninth belongs to the Moon's son; the tenth is auspicious under Guru; the eleventh belongs to Guru and Venus; the twelfth again belongs to Mercury;

Verse 30 (garuda.1.59.30)

पौर्णमास्यप्यमावास्या श्रेष्ठा स्याच्च बृहस्पतौ ॥ द्वादशीं दहते भानुः शशी चैकादशीं दहेत्

paurṇamāsyapyamāvāsyā śreṣṭhā syācca bṛhaspatau . dvādaśīṁ dahate bhānuḥ śaśī caikādaśīṁ dahet

the thirteenth belongs to Venus and Mars; the fourteenth is excellent under Saturn; the full moon and new moon are also excellent under Brihaspati (Jupiter).

Verse 31 (garuda.1.59.31)

कुजो दहेच्च दशमीं नवमीं च बुधो दहेत् ॥ अष्टमीं दहते जीवः सप्तमीं भार्गवो दहेत्

kujo dahecca daśamīṁ navamīṁ ca budho dahet . aṣṭamīṁ dahate jīvaḥ saptamīṁ bhārgavo dahet

The Sun burns the twelfth; the Moon burns the eleventh; Mars burns the tenth, and Mercury burns the ninth;

Verse 32 (garuda.1.59.32)

सूर्य्यपुत्रो दहेत्षष्ठीं गमनाद्यासु नास्ति वै ॥ प्रतिपन्नवमीष्वेव चतुर्दश्यष्टमीषु च

sūryyaputro dahetṣaṣṭhīṁ gamanādyāsu nāsti vai . pratipannavamīṣveva caturdaśyaṣṭamīṣu ca

Jupiter burns the eighth; Venus burns the seventh; the Sun's son (Saturn) burns the sixth — on these 'burnt' tithis, there is no travel and the like.

Verse 33 (garuda.1.59.33)

बुधवारे प्रस्थानं दूरतः परिवर्जयेत् ॥ मेषे कर्कटके षष्ठी कन्यायां मिथुनेऽष्टमी

budhavāre prasthānaṁ dūrataḥ parivarjayet . meṣe karkaṭake ṣaṣṭhī kanyāyāṁ mithune'ṣṭamī

If the first, ninth, fourteenth, or eighth lunar day falls on a Wednesday, one should avoid setting out on a distant journey.

Verse 34 (garuda.1.59.34)

वृषे कुम्भे चतुर्थो च द्वादशी मकरे तुले ॥ दशमी वृश्चिके सिंहे धनुर्मोने चतुर्दशी

vṛṣe kumbhe caturtho ca dvādaśī makare tule . daśamī vṛścike siṁhe dhanurmone caturdaśī

In Aries and Cancer, the sixth is inauspicious; in Virgo and Gemini, the eighth;

Verse 35 (garuda.1.59.35)

एता दग्धा न गन्तव्यं पीडादिः किल मानवैः ॥ विशाखात्रयमादित्ये पूर्वाषाढात्रये शशी

etā dagdhā na gantavyaṁ pīḍādiḥ kila mānavaiḥ . viśākhātrayamāditye pūrvāṣāḍhātraye śaśī

in Taurus and Aquarius, the fourth; in Capricorn and Libra, the twelfth; in Scorpio and Leo, the tenth; in Sagittarius and Pisces, the fourteenth — one should not travel on these 'burnt' combinations, for injury and the like will certainly befall a person.

Verse 36 (garuda.1.59.36)

धनिष्ठात्रितयं भौमे बुधे वै रेवतीत्रयम् ॥ रोहिण्यादित्रयं जीवे शुक्रे पुष्यात्रयं शिव

dhaniṣṭhātritayaṁ bhaume budhe vai revatītrayam . rohiṇyāditrayaṁ jīve śukre puṣyātrayaṁ śiva

On Sunday, the three Vishakha nakshatras; on Monday, the three Purva-Ashadha;

Verse 37 (garuda.1.59.37)

शनिवारे वर्जयेच्च उत्तराफल्गुनीत्रयम् ॥ एषु योगेषु चोत्पातमृत्युरोगादिकं भवेत्

śanivāre varjayecca uttarāphalgunītrayam . eṣu yogeṣu cotpātamṛtyurogādikaṁ bhavet

on Tuesday, the three Dhanishtha; on Wednesday, the three Revati; on Thursday, the three beginning with Rohini; on Friday, the three Pushya, O Shiva; and on Saturday, the three Uttara-Phalguni nakshatras should be avoided. In these combinations, calamity, death, disease, and the like occur.

Verse 38 (garuda.1.59.38)

मूलेऽर्कः श्रवणे चन्द्रः प्रोष्ठपद्युत्तरे कुजः ॥ कृत्तिकासु बुधश्चैव गुरौ रुद्र पुनर्वसुः

mūle'rkaḥ śravaṇe candraḥ proṣṭhapadyuttare kujaḥ . kṛttikāsu budhaścaiva gurau rudra punarvasuḥ

The Sun in Mula, the Moon in Shravana, Mars in Uttara-Bhadrapada, Mercury in Krittika, and, O Rudra, Jupiter in Punarvasu,

Verse 39 (garuda.1.59.39)

पूर्वफल्गुनी शुक्रे च स्वातिश्चैव शनैश्वरे ॥ एतै चामृतयोगाः स्युः सर्वकार्य्यप्रसाधकाः

pūrvaphalgunī śukre ca svātiścaiva śanaiśvare . etai cāmṛtayogāḥ syuḥ sarvakāryyaprasādhakāḥ

Venus in Purva-Phalguni, and Shanaishchara (Saturn) in Svati — these are the nectar-conjunctions, which accomplish every undertaking.

Verse 40 (garuda.1.59.40)

कालं प्रवध्यन्नि ? शक्तिदा ? नेष्टमंद ? ॥ पर्वादिस्तु ज्ञेयः कालः कालविशारदैः

kālaṁ pravadhyanni ? śaktidā ? neṣṭamaṁda ? . parvādistu jñeyaḥ kālaḥ kālaviśāradaiḥ

[The source text is uncertain here — that which prolongs the time(?), bestows power(?), is not desired when weak(?)] The parva and other such periods should be known by those skilled in the reckoning of time.

Verse 41 (garuda.1.59.41)

एकीकृत्याक्षरान्मात्रं नाम्नोः स्त्रीपुंसयोस्त्रिभिः ॥ भागे द्विशेषे स्त्रीनाशः पुसः स्यादेकशून्ययोः

ekīkṛtyākṣarānmātraṁ nāmnoḥ strīpuṁsayostribhiḥ . bhāge dviśeṣe strīnāśaḥ pusaḥ syādekaśūnyayoḥ

Having combined the syllables and matras of the man's and woman's names and divided by three — if two remain, it means loss for the woman; if one or zero remain on the man's count, judge accordingly.

Verse 42 (garuda.1.59.42)

विष्कम्भे घटिकाः पंच शूले सप्त प्रकीर्तिताः ॥ षड्गण्डे चातिगण्डे च नव व्याघातवज्रयोः

viṣkambhe ghaṭikāḥ paṁca śūle sapta prakīrtitāḥ . ṣaḍgaṇḍe cātigaṇḍe ca nava vyāghātavajrayoḥ

In the Vishkambha yoga, five ghatikas are declared inauspicious; in Shula, seven; in Ganda and Atiganda, six; in Vyaghata and Vajra, nine;

Verse 43 (garuda.1.59.43)

व्यतीपाते च परिघे वैधृते च दिनेदिने ॥ एतै मृत्युयुता ह्येषु सर्वकर्माणि वर्जयेत्

vyatīpāte ca parighe vaidhṛte ca dinedine . etai mṛtyuyutā hyeṣu sarvakarmāṇi varjayet

in Vyatipata, Parigha, and Vaidhriti, these inauspicious periods recur day by day. Joined with death, all undertakings should be avoided in these.

Verse 44 (garuda.1.59.44)

हस्तेऽर्कश्च गुरुः पुष्ये अनुराधा बुधे शुभा ॥ रोहिणी च शनौ श्रेष्ठा सौमं सोमेन वै शुभम्

haste'rkaśca guruḥ puṣye anurādhā budhe śubhā . rohiṇī ca śanau śreṣṭhā saumaṁ somena vai śubham

The Sun in Hasta, Jupiter in Pushya, and Mercury in Anuradha are auspicious; Rohini is excellent under Saturn; the lunar nakshatra is auspicious under the Moon;

Verse 45 (garuda.1.59.45)

शुक्रे च रेवती श्रेष्ठा अश्विनी मंगले शुभा ॥ एतेषु सिद्धियोगा वै सर्वदोषविनाशनाः

śukre ca revatī śreṣṭhā aśvinī maṁgale śubhā . eteṣu siddhiyogā vai sarvadoṣavināśanāḥ

Revati is excellent under Venus; Ashvini is auspicious under Mars — in these there are perfecting conjunctions that destroy every fault.

Verse 46 (garuda.1.59.46)

भार्गवे भरणी चैव सोमे चित्रा वृषध्वज ! ॥ भौमे चै वोत्तराषाढा धनिष्ठा च बुधे हर !

bhārgave bharaṇī caiva some citrā vṛṣadhvaja ! . bhaume cai vottarāṣāḍhā dhaniṣṭhā ca budhe hara !

Bharani under Venus, and, O bull-bannered one, Chitra under the Moon; Uttara-Ashadha under Mars, and, O Hara, Dhanishtha under Mercury,

Verse 47 (garuda.1.59.47)

गुरौ शतभिषा रुद्र ! शुक्रे वै रोहिणी तथा ॥ शनौ च रेवती शम्भो ! विषयोगाः प्रकीर्त्तिताः

gurau śatabhiṣā rudra ! śukre vai rohiṇī tathā . śanau ca revatī śambho ! viṣayogāḥ prakīrttitāḥ

O Rudra, Shatabhisha under Jupiter; likewise Rohini under Venus; and, O Shambhu, Revati under Saturn — these are declared as poison-conjunctions.

Verse 48 (garuda.1.59.48)

पुष्यः पुनर्वसुश्चैव रेवती चित्रया सह ॥ श्रवणं च धनिष्ठा च हस्ताश्वनीमृगास्तथा

puṣyaḥ punarvasuścaiva revatī citrayā saha . śravaṇaṁ ca dhaniṣṭhā ca hastāśvanīmṛgāstathā

Pushya and Punarvasu, Revati together with Chitra, Shravana and Dhanishtha, and Hasta, Ashvini, and Mrigashira,

Verse 49 (garuda.1.59.49)

कुर्य्याच्छतभिषायां च जातकर्मादि मानवः ॥ विशाखा चोत्तरात्रीणि मघार्द्रा भरणी तथा ॥ आश्लेषा कृत्तिका रुद्र ! प्रस्थाने मरणप्रदाः

kuryyācchatabhiṣāyāṁ ca jātakarmādi mānavaḥ . viśākhā cottarātrīṇi maghārdrā bharaṇī tathā . āśleṣā kṛttikā rudra ! prasthāne maraṇapradāḥ

and also under Shatabhisha — a person should perform the birth-rite and the like under these. Vishakha and the three Uttara-nakshatras, Magha, Ardra, Bharani as well, and, O Rudra, Ashlesha and Krittika — for setting out on a journey, these bring death.
